CHAPTER 7 — OLIVIA STARTS DIGGING

Clara couldn't move.
The man stood in the doorway, rainwater dripping from his coat.
His face was older than hers, sharper around the jaw, but there was something unmistakable in his eyes.
Something familiar.
Something that made Clara's chest ache before her mind could understand why.
“Noah?”
The man's expression changed.
For the first time, the anger disappeared.
“Yes.”
Clara took one hesitant step toward him.
“You're my brother?”
Noah nodded.
“I've been waiting twenty-four years to hear you ask that.”
Clara's eyes filled instantly.
She covered her mouth.
“I thought you were dead.”
“So did I.”
Adrian stepped between them.
“Who raised you?”
Noah's eyes moved to him.
“You're Adrian Whitmore.”
“Yes.”
Noah's expression hardened.
“The son of the man who took me.”
Adrian absorbed the accusation.
“If my father took you, I didn't know.”
“I know.”
“You believe me?”
“No.”
Adrian stared at him.
Noah continued:
“Not yet.”
Clara stepped forward.
“Where have you been?”
“Everywhere.”
“Why didn't you find me?”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
Clara's face tightened.
“What happened?”
Noah laughed bitterly.
“I found your address.”
He looked at Adrian.
“Then I found out who owned the house.”
Clara frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Vanessa.”
The name hung in the room.
Noah's jaw tightened.
“She found me before I reached you.”
Adrian immediately asked:
“What did she do?”
“She offered me money.”
“For what?”
“To disappear.”
“And you refused?”
“I did.”
Noah looked toward Clara.
“Then she told me something that changed everything.”
“What?”
“She said if I came near you, she'd make sure you died.”
Clara's eyes widened.
“She threatened you?”
“She threatened both of us.”
Adrian's voice hardened.
“Why?”
Noah looked at him.
“Because Vanessa knew exactly who we were.”
He reached inside his coat and removed a small envelope.
“She knew before you did.”
Adrian took it.
Inside was a bank statement.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Monthly transfers.
The recipient name:
N. BENNETT
The sender:
HARPER FAMILY TRUST.
Adrian frowned.
“Vanessa paid you?”
“No.”
Noah pointed to another line.
“She paid someone to keep me under surveillance.”
Adrian read the name.
His face changed.
Samuel Harper.
Vanessa's father.
Noah said quietly:
“They've been tracking me since I was nineteen.”
Olivia sat alone in the mansion's study.
She had barely slept.
She kept thinking about the surveillance camera.
The hidden folder.
The DNA report.
And now Noah.
Something didn't fit.
If Noah had been separated from Clara at birth, why had Vanessa spent years monitoring him?
Why had Richard taken him?
Why had Vanessa tried to destroy Clara?
And most importantly—
Why was Emma connected to all of it?
Olivia opened the laptop.
She created a timeline.
June 14 — Clara and Noah born.
June 15 — Noah transferred to Richard Whitmore.
Two years later — Richard allegedly dies.
Eight months ago — Clara hired into Whitmore household.
Six months ago — Vanessa orders Emma DNA test.
Today — stroller incident.
Tonight — Emma kidnapped.
Olivia stared at the timeline.
Then she noticed something.
The dates weren't random.
Every major event occurred within weeks of a financial transaction.
She opened Adrian's company records.
Transfers from Whitmore Holdings to the Harper Family Foundation.
Millions of dollars.
Not donations.
Payments.
She checked the first one.
$2.4 million.
The description:
MEDICAL RESEARCH SERVICES.
Olivia frowned.
There were dozens.
Over twenty-four years.
Then she noticed a recurring code.
R17.
Her heart started pounding.
She searched the company database.
Nothing.
She searched the foundation's archived files.
Nothing.
Then she tried the hospital system.
ROOM 17.
Olivia froze.
The same code appeared beside every payment.
She whispered:
“What did they do in that room?”
At the abandoned foundation, Noah sat across from Adrian.
Clara remained beside him.
Reed stood near the door.
“Tell me everything,” Adrian said.
Noah looked at him.
“You won't like it.”
“I don't care.”
“Your father didn't steal me.”
Adrian's expression changed.
“What?”
“He saved me.”
Clara stared at Noah.
“What are you saying?”
Noah looked at her.
“Our mother was dying.”
“She died after giving birth.”
“Yes.”
“And your father…”
“Richard knew Dr. Harper was planning to sell me.”
Adrian froze.
“Sell you?”
Noah nodded.
“There was an illegal adoption network.”
Clara's face went pale.
“They were selling newborns?”
“Not exactly.”
Noah looked at Adrian.
“They were selling identities.”
Adrian frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Rich families who couldn't have children paid enormous amounts of money for babies.”
Clara whispered:
“Emma.”
Noah nodded.
“Exactly.”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“Are you saying Emma was part of that?”
“No.”
“Then why was she born in the same hospital?”
“Because your father discovered the network.”
Adrian stared at him.
“He tried to stop it.”
“And failed?”
“He stopped one part of it.”
Noah looked toward Clara.
“Me.”
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
“Why you?”
“Because I was supposed to disappear.”
“Where?”
Noah looked at Adrian.
“Into another family.”
Adrian's face hardened.
“Which family?”
Noah hesitated.
“The Whitmores.”
Silence.
Adrian looked confused.
“I don't understand.”
“Your father was supposed to raise me.”
“You?”
Noah nodded.
“But he couldn't.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother refused.”
Adrian's eyes widened.
“My mother knew?”
“She knew everything.”
Olivia suddenly heard footsteps outside the study.
She closed the laptop.
“Who's there?”
No answer.
She stood.
The door opened.
Vanessa walked in.
Olivia's heart stopped.
“What are you doing here?”
Vanessa smiled.
“I came for some clothes.”
“You're not supposed to be here.”
“I still have belongings in this house.”
Olivia moved between Vanessa and the desk.
“You're not taking anything.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Why are you so suspicious of me?”
Olivia didn't answer.
Vanessa walked closer.
“You've changed.”
“So have you.”
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
“What does that mean?”
“I know about the DNA test.”
Vanessa went still.
Olivia continued.
“I know about the hidden camera.”
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“And I know about Room 17.”
For a moment, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.
Then she smiled again.
“You have no idea what you're talking about.”
Olivia pointed toward the door.
“Leave.”
Vanessa didn't move.
Instead, she whispered:
“You really are your father's daughter.”
Olivia frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa turned toward the hallway.
“You'll understand soon.”
Then she walked out.
Olivia immediately grabbed her laptop.
She had secretly kept a backup recorder running.
The microphone had captured Vanessa's final sentence.
But there was another sound.
A tiny electronic click.
Olivia checked the security feed.
Vanessa hadn't come alone.
Someone was standing outside.
A man.
Holding a black case.
Olivia recognized him.
He was the same man who had been with Vanessa at the warehouse.
Olivia whispered:
“They're coming back.”
At the foundation, Adrian's phone rang.
Olivia.
He answered.
“What's wrong?”
“Dad, get back here.”
“Why?”
“Vanessa was in the house.”
Adrian's face hardened.
“Is she still there?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
“I found another connection.”
“What?”
“The Harper Foundation has been receiving payments from Whitmore Holdings for twenty-four years.”
Adrian looked at Noah.
“How much?”
“Millions.”
“I know.”
“Dad…”
Olivia hesitated.
“I found the code.”
“R17?”
Adrian's eyes widened.
“How did you know?”
Noah looked up.
“I've seen it before.”
“Where?”
“On my medical records.”
Clara turned toward him.
“What medical records?”
Noah's expression became grim.
“When I was a teenager, I was diagnosed with a rare condition.”
“What condition?”
“Something that required regular treatment.”
Adrian frowned.
“Was it real?”
Noah shook his head.
“No.”
Clara stared.
“They lied?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Noah looked at Adrian.
“To justify keeping me inside the foundation.”
Adrian's face went cold.
“They used you.”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
Noah took a breath.
“Research.”
Clara's eyes widened.
“What kind?”
Noah looked toward her.
“Genetic research.”
Adrian immediately understood.
“DNA.”
Noah nodded.
“They were studying family lines.”
“Why?”
“To match children with wealthy families.”
Adrian felt sick.
“So the foundation was an illegal child-matching operation.”
“Part of it.”
“What was the other part?”
Noah looked at Clara.
“Your mother discovered that some of the children weren't being adopted.”
“What happened to them?”
Noah's voice dropped.
“They disappeared.”
Clara covered her mouth.
Adrian looked at Reed.
“Can you shut this place down?”
“It's already evidence.”
“Then we need every record.”
Reed nodded.
“We'll take everything.”
Noah suddenly stood.
“Wait.”
“What?”
He pointed toward a cabinet.
“That wasn't there before.”
Adrian walked over.
Behind the cabinet was a hidden compartment.
Inside were dozens of files.
Each marked with a number.
Noah opened the first.
A child's name.
The second.
Another child.
Then Clara found a file marked:
R17-EMMA.
Adrian's heart stopped.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Emma.
Taken the day she was born.
But beneath it was a second photograph.
Emma lying beside another newborn.
Two babies.
Born minutes apart.
Clara stared.
“Who is the other baby?”
Adrian turned the page.
The name had been blacked out.
But underneath was a handwritten note.
THIS CHILD MUST NEVER BE FOUND.
Olivia's voice suddenly came through Adrian's phone.
“Dad…”
“What?”
“I found the original birth records.”
Adrian listened.
“There's something you need to know.”
“What?”
“The hospital didn't record one birth that night.”
She paused.
“There were three.”
Adrian's blood ran cold.
“Three?”
“Yes.”
Clara looked at Noah.
Noah looked equally stunned.
Olivia continued:
“Clara.”
Clara took the phone.
“I'm here.”
“Your mother didn't have twins.”
Clara's face went white.
“She had triplets.”
Silence.
Olivia whispered:
“And the third child…”
The call suddenly cut out.
Clara stared at the phone.
“Olivia?”
No answer.
“Olivia!”
Adrian grabbed the phone.
“Olivia!”
Nothing.
Then a message appeared.
DON'T COME HOME.
Another message followed.
THE THIRD CHILD IS STILL ALIVE.
And finally:
VANESSA KNOWS WHERE HE IS.
Adrian looked at Clara.
Clara looked at Noah.
Noah's face had turned pale.
He whispered:
“Then I'm not the third child.”
A loud crash came from the hallway.
Reed raised his weapon.
Someone was coming.
The footsteps stopped outside the room.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
“That's right.”
Vanessa stepped into the doorway.
Her eyes were fixed on Noah.
“You were never the child we were looking for.”
Clara's blood ran cold.
Vanessa smiled.
“And now that you've found each other…”
She slowly raised her phone.
“…you've made my job much easier.”
The screen showed Olivia.
Bound to a chair.
Clara screamed.
“OLIVIA!”
May you like
Vanessa smiled.
“Now let's talk about the third child.”
