CHAPTER 10 — THE WOMAN HE COULDN’T TRUST

Evelyn's words hung in the chapel like a death sentence.

“Don't trust Clara.”

Adrian stared at the woman lying on the floor.

Blood covered her dress.

Clara was kneeling beside her, shaking.

“Mom…”

Evelyn's eyes were closed.

“Mom, please.”

Nothing.

Adrian looked toward the hidden doorway.

Vanessa had escaped.

Emma was gone.

Ethan was gone.

And now Clara's own mother had warned him not to trust her.

For the first time since this nightmare began, Adrian didn't know which direction to turn.

Reed crouched beside Evelyn.

“She has a pulse.”

“Will she survive?”

“I don't know.”

Adrian looked at Clara.

She was crying uncontrollably.

“Did you know?”

Clara looked up.

“Know what?”

“That Vanessa would be here.”

“No.”

“That my daughter would be here.”

“No.”

“That Ethan would be here.”

“No.”

Adrian's voice became harder.

“Then why did your mother tell me not to trust you?”

Clara stared at him.

“I don't know.”

“You're sure?”

“Yes.”

“You never met Vanessa before tonight?”

Clara shook her head.

“I've met her hundreds of times.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

Clara immediately realized what she had said.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You've met Vanessa hundreds of times?”

“No. I meant—”

“You just told me you haven't.”

“I meant I've seen her.”

“Where?”

Clara's face went pale.

“I don't remember.”

Adrian stared at her.

That answer was enough to plant the first seed of doubt.

THE SECOND MESSAGE

At the hospital, Evelyn was rushed into surgery.

Adrian stood outside the operating room.

Clara sat across the hallway.

Neither looked at the other.

Olivia's whereabouts were still unknown.

Emma was still missing.

Ethan was missing.

Vanessa was gone.

And every answer they found created three more questions.

Detective Reed approached.

“We found something.”

Adrian looked up.

“What?”

He handed him a plastic evidence bag.

Inside was a small memory card.

“Found it inside the chapel.”

Adrian frowned.

“What's on it?”

“Security footage.”

“From when?”

“The night Evelyn was attacked.”

Adrian stared at the card.

“Play it.”

They entered an empty consultation room.

Reed connected the card to his laptop.

The footage appeared.

The chapel.

Thirty minutes before Adrian arrived.

Evelyn entered alone.

Then Clara appeared.

Adrian frowned.

He looked at Clara through the glass wall.

She wasn't supposed to have been there.

The video continued.

Clara approached Evelyn.

They spoke.

No audio.

But their body language was tense.

Evelyn handed Clara an envelope.

Clara took it.

Then she hugged her mother.

The footage jumped forward.

Vanessa entered.

Then Adrian's arrival.

Then the gunshot.

Adrian stared at the screen.

“What was in that envelope?”

Reed shook his head.

“We don't know.”

“Where is it?”

“Missing.”

Adrian turned toward Clara.

She was standing in the doorway.

Her face had gone white.

“Where is the envelope?”

“I don't have it.”

“Then who does?”

“I don't know.”

“Clara.”

“I swear.”

Adrian looked back at the screen.

Then he noticed something.

A reflection in the chapel window.

Someone else had been watching.

A man.

Tall.

Wearing a dark coat.

Adrian paused the video.

“Zoom in.”

Reed did.

The man's face was blurred.

But his left hand was visible.

There was a distinctive ring.

A silver ring with a black stone.

Adrian's heart stopped.

“I know that ring.”

Reed looked at him.

“Whose?”

Adrian whispered:

“My father's.”

THE HOUSE OF LIES

Adrian drove to the old Whitmore estate alone.

Clara followed in another vehicle.

He didn't ask her to come.

She came anyway.

The estate was still surrounded by police.

Adrian entered the house.

Every memory felt poisoned now.

His childhood.

His father.

His mother.

The hidden room.

Noah.

Ethan.

Emma.

Everything had been built on secrets.

He walked into his father's study.

Dust covered the desk.

He opened the drawers.

Nothing.

Then he remembered something.

Richard had always kept one key separate from every other key.

Adrian searched beneath the desk.

His fingers found a small metal hook.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside—

A black notebook.

Adrian opened it.

Every page contained names.

Children.

Dates.

Payments.

Doctors.

Families.

He turned the pages faster.

Then stopped.

BENNETT, EVELYN — JUNE 14

CHILDREN: THREE

STATUS:

CLARA — WITH MOTHER

NOAH — PROTECTED

ETHAN — TRANSFERRED

Adrian stared.

Transferred where?

The destination had been scratched out.

He turned the page.

A handwritten note appeared.

EMMA IS NOT ONE OF THE THREE.

Adrian froze.

“What?”

He read it again.

Emma wasn't one of the three children.

Then who was Emma?

A cold feeling spread through him.

He turned another page.

There was a photograph.

A newborn baby.

The caption:

CHILD #4

Adrian's hands began shaking.

Underneath:

Female.

Born June 14.

Biological parents unknown.

Adrian whispered:

“Four babies.”

Clara entered the study.

“What did you find?”

Adrian didn't answer.

She came closer.

He turned the notebook toward her.

Clara read the page.

Her eyes widened.

“Four?”

Adrian nodded.

“You, Noah, Ethan…”

“And another girl.”

Clara looked at him.

“Emma.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

Clara stared.

Adrian pointed at the notebook.

“Emma isn't one of the three.”

Clara's face drained of color.

“Then who is she?”

Adrian turned the page.

A second document had been taped to the paper.

A DNA report.

The father's name:

ADRIAN WHITMORE.

The mother's name:

UNKNOWN.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Clara looked at him.

“She's your biological daughter.”

“Yes.”

“But not Evelyn's.”

“No.”

“Then who is her mother?”

Adrian looked at the final line.

The name had been partially destroyed.

Only three letters remained.

VAN—

Clara whispered:

“Vanessa.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“No.”

But the evidence was staring back at him.

Emma was his biological daughter.

And Vanessa was apparently her mother.

THE WOMAN WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

Vanessa sat inside a private underground room.

Emma slept in a small crib.

Ethan sat on the floor.

He was drawing with a pencil.

Vanessa watched him.

“You remember your father?”

Ethan didn't look up.

“Grandpa Richard.”

“No.”

Vanessa crouched beside him.

“Your real father.”

Ethan looked up.

“Adrian?”

Vanessa smiled.

“Yes.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why doesn't he know me?”

“Because your grandfather wanted it that way.”

“Why?”

“Because he was afraid.”

“Of me?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Of what you could become.”

Ethan looked confused.

Vanessa stood.

“You'll understand when you're older.”

She walked toward Emma.

Emma stirred.

“Mommy…”

Vanessa froze.

She hated that word.

Because it belonged to someone else.

She picked up the baby.

“Sleep.”

Emma reached toward her.

Vanessa's expression softened for half a second.

Then hardened again.

“You're the key.”

OLIVIA'S ESCAPE

Olivia woke in a dark room.

Her head hurt.

Her hands were free.

She looked around.

No Vanessa.

No guards.

Just an open door.

She slowly stood.

She remembered being taken from the mansion.

She remembered the woods.

Then nothing.

Olivia stepped into the hallway.

A man stood at the far end.

She froze.

“Who are you?”

The man turned.

Olivia recognized the ring.

The black stone.

Her grandfather's ring.

“Grandpa?”

The man smiled.

“Hello, Olivia.”

She backed away.

“You're dead.”

“No.”

“But Dad said—”

“Your father believed what he was told.”

“Where's Emma?”

The man looked at her.

“Safe.”

“Where's Ethan?”

“Safe.”

“Where's Vanessa?”

The man's smile faded.

“She is no longer important.”

Olivia stared.

“Then why did she kidnap me?”

“She didn't.”

“What?”

The man stepped closer.

“I did.”

Olivia's blood ran cold.

“Why?”

“Because you're the only one who can fix what your father broke.”

“What did he break?”

The man looked toward the dark hallway.

“The family.”

THE BLOOD TEST

At the hospital, Adrian waited outside the lab.

The DNA technician emerged.

“Mr. Whitmore?”

“Yes.”

“We've completed the emergency comparison.”

Adrian swallowed.

“Emma is my daughter?”

“Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

“And Vanessa?”

The technician hesitated.

“Yes.”

Adrian opened his eyes.

“She's Emma's biological mother?”

“No.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

“We compared Emma's DNA with Vanessa's.”

“And?”

“No match.”

Adrian stared.

“Then who is her mother?”

The technician handed him the report.

“We don't know.”

Adrian looked at the document.

The earlier report had been altered.

Someone had manipulated the results.

The technician continued:

“But there's something else.”

“What?”

“We compared Emma with Clara.”

Adrian's heart stopped.

“And?”

“Partial match.”

Clara's eyes widened.

“How much?”

“Enough to suggest a close maternal relationship.”

Adrian looked at Clara.

She was trembling.

“I'm her aunt.”

The technician shook his head.

“No.”

Everyone went silent.

“Aunt?”

The technician looked at the report.

“This isn't an aunt-nephew relationship.”

He swallowed.

“It's closer.”

Clara stared at Adrian.

Adrian stared back.

Then the technician said the words neither expected.

“Clara Bennett is Emma's biological mother.”

THE IMPOSSIBLE TRUTH

Clara stepped backward.

“No.”

Adrian couldn't speak.

The technician continued.

“The DNA markers are highly consistent.”

Clara shook her head.

“I'm twenty-four.”

“I know.”

“I couldn't have…”

She stopped.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I don't remember.”

Adrian stared at her.

“What don't you remember?”

“My childhood.”

“Clara.”

She looked at him.

“I have missing years.”

“How many?”

“Three.”

Adrian's expression changed.

“From what age?”

“Sixteen to nineteen.”

Clara whispered:

“I was told I had been sick.”

Adrian looked at the technician.

“Can memory loss affect DNA?”

“No.”

Adrian looked at Clara.

“Then where was Emma?”

Clara closed her eyes.

“I don't know.”

THE LAST FILE

Reed entered the hallway.

“Adrian.”

“What?”

“We found Olivia.”

Adrian's heart jumped.

“Where?”

“She escaped.”

“Is she safe?”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

“She came back to the mansion.”

Adrian immediately turned.

“What did she say?”

Reed hesitated.

“She says your father is alive.”

Adrian stopped.

“We already knew that.”

“No.”

Reed looked at him.

“She says she saw him.”

Adrian's face went pale.

“Where?”

“She says he told her something.”

“What?”

Reed lowered his voice.

“He said Emma isn't the only child Vanessa took.”

Adrian stared.

“What does that mean?”

Reed handed him a photograph.

Adrian looked at it.

Emma.

Ethan.

And Clara.

All three standing together.

But the photograph wasn't old.

It had been taken that morning.

Adrian's blood ran cold.

Behind them stood Richard.

Alive.

And smiling.

On the back of the photograph was one sentence:

COME ALONE, ADRIAN.

Then another:

IF YOU WANT YOUR FAMILY BACK, BRING CLARA.

Adrian looked at Clara.

She shook her head.

“No.”

He stared at the photograph.

Then his phone rang.

An unknown number.

He answered.

Richard's voice came through.

“Son.”

Adrian couldn't breathe.

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

A long silence.

Then:

“Exactly where I have been for twenty-four years.”

Adrian's voice cracked.

“Why?”

Richard whispered:

“Because I was protecting you from the truth.”

“What truth?”

Another pause.

Then Richard said:

“Clara isn't your enemy.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Then who is?”

Richard's answer was barely audible.

“Your mother.”

The call ended.

Adrian slowly lowered the phone.

Clara stared at him.

“What did he say?”

Adrian couldn't answer.

Because for the first time, he understood something terrifying.

The greatest lie in his life hadn't been created by Vanessa.

It hadn't been created by Richard.

It had started with the woman who raised him.

His mother.

And somewhere in the city, that woman was still alive.

Watching.

May you like

Waiting.

And holding the final piece of the truth.
