CHAPTER 12 — THE TRUTH THAT BROKE THE FAMILY

The gunshot echoed through the old Whitmore estate.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Eleanor stood frozen.

Clara clutched Emma against her chest.

Adrian instinctively stepped in front of them.

Ethan backed toward the staircase.

Vanessa stood in the doorway, breathing heavily, the gun still raised.

Behind her, Victoria Harper lay motionless on the floor.

Adrian stared at her.

“Did you shoot her?”

Vanessa's eyes never left Eleanor.

“Yes.”

Eleanor's expression hardened.

“You've finally become exactly what I made you.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“No.”

Her hand trembled.

“I became what you made me survive.”

Adrian looked at the weapon.

“Put it down.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not yet.”

Clara's voice was barely audible.

“Where is my mother?”

Vanessa looked at her.

“Alive.”

Clara froze.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“You knew my mother was alive all these years?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Yes.”

Clara's face crumpled.

“Why?”

Vanessa looked toward Eleanor.

“Because she was the only person who knew where the original records were.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“What original records?”

“The ones proving everything.”

“What everything?”

Vanessa looked at Emma.

“The children.”

THE ROOM BELOW

Reed entered the mansion with several officers.

He immediately ordered everyone to lower their weapons.

Vanessa slowly placed hers on the floor.

Police rushed in.

Victoria was alive.

Barely.

An ambulance was called.

Eleanor was handcuffed.

Vanessa was taken into custody.

But before she was escorted away, she looked at Adrian.

“You need to find the records.”

“Where?”

Vanessa glanced at Clara.

“She knows.”

Clara shook her head.

“I don't.”

Vanessa whispered:

“You will.”

Then she was gone.

Adrian turned toward Clara.

“What did she mean?”

“I don't know.”

Eleanor laughed from behind the officers.

“You really don't remember.”

Clara stared at her.

“Remember what?”

“Your pregnancy.”

Clara's face went pale.

Adrian stepped closer.

“What did Vanessa do to her?”

Eleanor said nothing.

Adrian grabbed the old photograph.

“You said Clara was pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“With Emma.”

“Yes.”

“Then why doesn't she remember?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“Because she was sixteen.”

Clara's knees nearly gave out.

Adrian caught her.

“Sixteen?”

Eleanor nodded.

“Clara was sixteen when she became pregnant.”

Clara covered her mouth.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I wasn't.”

“You were.”

“Who was the father?”

Eleanor's expression changed.

“Adrian.”

Silence.

Adrian stared.

“What?”

Eleanor continued:

“You were seventeen.”

Clara looked at Adrian.

Neither could breathe.

THE MEMORY

Clara suddenly felt dizzy.

A sound.

A smell.

A hallway.

Rain against glass.

A young Adrian laughing.

A summer evening.

His hand holding hers.

A promise.

“I'll always protect you.”

Clara staggered backward.

Adrian caught her.

“Clara?”

She closed her eyes.

“I remember.”

“What?”

“The garden.”

Adrian stared.

“I remember you.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“You were seventeen.”

“Yes.”

“We loved each other.”

Adrian's voice broke.

“Yes.”

Then another memory came.

Clara lying in a hospital bed.

A newborn crying.

A woman standing over her.

Victoria.

Clara screamed.

“No!”

Everyone turned.

Clara grabbed her head.

“She took my baby.”

Adrian held her.

“Who?”

“Victoria.”

“What did she do?”

“She said Emma was dead.”

Adrian froze.

“She told me the baby didn't survive.”

Clara sobbed.

“I believed her.”

THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

Clara's memories returned in fragments.

She remembered the hospital.

The bright lights.

The smell of disinfectant.

Her mother's terrified face.

Richard arguing with Victoria.

Then Vanessa.

Young Vanessa.

Standing in the doorway.

She remembered Vanessa whispering:

“You have to forget.”

Clara remembered a needle.

A sharp pain.

Then darkness.

She woke three days later.

Her pregnancy was gone.

Everyone told her the baby had died.

Her memories afterward were confused.

Then her mother disappeared.

And Adrian was taken away from her.

His family told him Clara had betrayed him.

They never spoke again.

Until eight months ago.

Clara looked at Adrian.

“I didn't abandon you.”

Adrian's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“They made you believe I did.”

“Yes.”

“They made me believe Emma was dead.”

Adrian held her hand.

“They stole twenty-four years from us.”

THE FOURTH CHILD

Eleanor suddenly spoke.

“You still haven't asked the most important question.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“Why was Emma taken?”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“Tell me.”

Eleanor looked at Clara.

“Because Emma wasn't ordinary.”

Clara frowned.

“She was born with the genetic marker.”

Adrian remembered the files.

“The marker.”

“Yes.”

“What does it do?”

“Nothing by itself.”

“Then why did Victoria want it?”

“Because it could identify the biological parents of children who had been illegally transferred.”

Adrian stared.

“She wanted to control the evidence.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Exactly.”

Clara whispered:

“So Emma was proof.”

“Yes.”

“Proof of what?”

“That the Harper organization had stolen children.”

Eleanor's voice became quiet.

“Hundreds.”

Adrian felt sick.

“How many?”

“More than three hundred.”

Silence.

Clara stared at her.

“And my brothers?”

“They were among the first.”

THE HIDDEN ARCHIVE

Reed returned.

“We found something.”

Adrian turned.

“What?”

“There is another underground chamber beneath the estate.”

Eleanor smiled.

“Finally.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Behind the old wine cellar.”

They followed Reed downstairs.

Behind a wall was another door.

This one required a fingerprint.

Eleanor stepped forward.

She placed her hand against the scanner.

The door opened.

Inside were rows of shelves.

Hundreds of files.

Photographs.

Birth certificates.

DNA reports.

Adoption records.

Financial transactions.

Everything.

Reed stared.

“This is enormous.”

Adrian walked to the nearest shelf.

Every file had a child's name.

He opened one.

A girl from Texas.

Another.

A boy from Chicago.

Another.

A newborn from California.

Clara covered her mouth.

“These are children.”

Adrian nodded.

“All of them.”

Then he found a red folder.

PROJECT ECHO.

He opened it.

The first page read:

OBJECTIVE: IDENTIFY, TRACK AND CONTROL CHILDREN WITH THE BENNETT GENETIC MARKER.

Adrian turned the page.

Three names.

CLARA BENNETT

NOAH BENNETT

ETHAN BENNETT

Then a fourth.

EMMA WHITMORE.

Adrian froze.

Beneath Emma's name:

STATUS: PRIMARY EVIDENCE HOLDER.

Clara whispered:

“They were never trying to hurt Emma.”

Adrian looked at her.

“They were trying to control what she could prove.”

THE VIDEO

A small screen activated.

An old recording began automatically.

Richard appeared.

His face was older.

Tired.

He looked directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this, then I'm probably dead.”

Adrian's eyes filled.

Richard continued:

“Adrian, I lied to you.”

Adrian whispered:

“I know.”

“I told you Clara abandoned you.”

Clara looked down.

“She didn't.”

“I told you Emma's mother died.”

Clara's hands shook.

“She didn't.”

“I told you your mother was dead.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“She wasn't.”

Richard continued:

“I lied because I believed the truth would kill you.”

The recording paused.

Then Richard said:

“Eleanor is not the enemy.”

Adrian looked at his mother.

Richard continued:

“She was the one who saved you.”

Eleanor's face softened.

“I asked her to disappear.”

Adrian stared.

“Why?”

“Because Victoria had discovered your bloodline.”

Richard leaned closer to the camera.

“She knew Clara's family carried a genetic marker that could expose every stolen child.”

He took a breath.

“She needed Emma.”

“But she also needed Clara.”

Richard's expression became grave.

“Because Clara is the only person who knows where the original evidence was hidden.”

The video ended.

Adrian turned toward Clara.

“What evidence?”

Clara shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Eleanor whispered:

“You will.”

THE MEMORY ROOM

Clara entered the old hospital room that had been preserved inside the archive.

A single bed.

A chair.

A mirror.

She looked at herself.

Then she saw it.

A small mark carved into the wall.

17.

Her fingers touched it.

Suddenly—

Another memory.

Her mother standing beside her.

Evelyn whispered:

“Remember the song.”

Clara frowned.

“What song?”

Her mother sang softly.

A lullaby.

Three verses.

Three names.

Clara.

Noah.

Ethan.

Clara's eyes widened.

She remembered.

Her mother had hidden something inside the lullaby.

A code.

The first letters of every line.

Clara grabbed a piece of paper.

She wrote the words from memory.

Then rearranged the initials.

A location appeared.

ST. MARTHA'S CHAPEL.

Adrian stared.

“That's where the original records are.”

Clara nodded.

“My mother hid them there.”

THE CHAPEL

They arrived at the chapel before dawn.

The building had been abandoned for years.

Clara walked to the altar.

She remembered the lullaby.

Three steps left.

Two steps forward.

Then she knelt.

Her hand found a loose stone.

She pulled it away.

Inside was a metal box.

Adrian held his breath.

Clara opened it.

Inside—

A birth certificate.

A photograph.

And a handwritten letter.

The photograph showed Clara at sixteen.

Holding Emma.

Adrian stared.

“She remembered.”

Clara touched the picture.

“I didn't.”

The letter was from Evelyn.

Clara read it aloud.

My daughter,

If you ever find this, know that I never abandoned you.

Emma is alive.

She was taken because Victoria believed your child could expose everything.

I hid the original records because they prove the truth.

Clara turned the page.

Her voice trembled.

But there is something else.

Emma was not the only child taken from you.

Clara stopped.

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

She continued.

When you gave birth, you delivered two babies.

Adrian's eyes widened.

Clara shook her head.

“No…”

The letter continued:

Emma survived.

The second baby was taken.

His name was never entered into the official records.

Clara dropped the letter.

Adrian picked it up.

His hands trembled.

“Another child?”

Eleanor's face turned pale.

“No.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew?”

Eleanor whispered:

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Your son.”

THE LAST PHOTOGRAPH

A sound came from behind them.

They turned.

Vanessa stood in the chapel doorway.

She had escaped police custody.

Blood stained her sleeve.

She looked exhausted.

Adrian immediately moved toward her.

“Where is Emma?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“I brought her here.”

Adrian looked around.

“Where?”

Vanessa pointed toward the bell tower.

“She isn't alone.”

Adrian's heart stopped.

“Who is with her?”

Vanessa looked at Clara.

Then whispered:

“Her brother.”

Clara froze.

“Noah?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not Noah.”

“Ethan?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Vanessa slowly raised a photograph.

A little boy.

About four years old.

Standing beside Emma.

The boy looked directly into the camera.

Adrian stared.

Something about his face felt painfully familiar.

Vanessa whispered:

“His name is Lucas.”

Adrian's breathing stopped.

Clara looked at him.

“Who is Lucas?”

Vanessa answered:

“Your firstborn son.”

Adrian looked toward the bell tower.

Then a child's voice echoed through the chapel.

“Daddy?”

Adrian's eyes filled with tears.

He turned.

At the top of the stairs stood a little boy.

Emma held his hand.

The boy looked down at him.

And smiled.

Adrian whispered:

“Lucas…”

But before he could climb the stairs—

The chapel doors slammed shut.

A voice came from the darkness behind them.

Victoria.

“You finally found all your children.”

Everyone turned.

Victoria stood alive in the doorway.

Her face was bruised.

Her eyes were cold.

May you like

And in her hand—

A detonator.
