CHAPTER 6 — THE HEIRESS THEY TRIED TO ERASE

The words didn't make sense.

Not at first.

Lena simply stared at Vincent Moretti.

Waiting for him to smile.

Waiting for him to say it was a misunderstanding.

Waiting for him to tell her this was some impossible mistake.

But Vincent didn't smile.

He didn't look away.

He looked at her with the same seriousness he had when he walked through her apartment door.

The same seriousness he had when he promised:

“Stay alive for eight minutes.”

And Lena realized something terrifying.

He believed every word.

“I'm not a Moretti.”

Her voice was barely audible.

Vincent remained silent.

“I’m a waitress.”

She shook her head.

“I worked double shifts just to pay rent.”

Her fingers tightened around the old necklace.

“I grew up in a small apartment. My mother worked three jobs. We had nothing.”

A painful laugh escaped her.

“People like your family don't come from nothing.”

Vincent looked at the necklace.

“Actually…”

He paused.

“They often do.”

Lena looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Vincent walked toward the window.

“My family wasn't always powerful.”

His eyes darkened.

“Before the money, before the name, before everyone feared us…”

A pause.

“We were just people trying to survive.”

Lena looked down at the documents again.

The papers felt heavier than they should.

Because they weren't just paper.

They were a doorway into a life she never knew existed.

A family she never knew she had.

Secrets she never asked for.

“I don't want this.”

Vincent turned.

“What?”

“I don't want power.”

Her voice cracked.

“I don't want an empire.”

She looked at him.

“I just wanted a normal life.”

For a moment, Vincent said nothing.

Because he understood that more than she knew.

People saw the Moretti name and imagined luxury.

Respect.

Control.

But they never saw the cost.

They never saw the enemies.

The betrayals.

The loneliness.

The constant fear that everyone around you wanted something.

“You think having a name makes life easier.”

Lena looked at him.

“Doesn't it?”

Vincent's expression changed.

“No.”

A pause.

“Sometimes a name is the heaviest thing you can carry.”

That night, Vincent showed Lena something.

A room hidden inside the safe house.

Not a vault.

Not weapons.

Something unexpected.

A wall covered with photographs.

Old photographs.

Family photographs.

Lena stepped inside slowly.

“This is…”

“My family.”

She looked carefully.

There were pictures of Vincent as a child.

A younger Victoria.

Their parents.

A life before everything changed.

Then she saw one photograph that made her stop.

A woman.

Young.

Beautiful.

Holding a baby.

Lena's heart started beating faster.

“Who is she?”

Vincent walked beside her.

“My mother.”

Lena looked closer.

The woman was wearing the same symbol.

The same symbol on her necklace.

“She looks…”

She stopped.

Vincent noticed.

“Like you?”

Lena nodded slowly.

“I was going to say that.”

Neither of them spoke.

Because the resemblance was impossible to ignore.

“She knew about me.”

Lena's voice trembled.

“Didn't she?”

Vincent looked at the photo.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“We don't know.”

“Then find out.”

Her voice became stronger.

For the first time, Vincent saw something different.

Not fear.

Determination.

“I spent my entire life not knowing where I came from.”

She touched the picture.

“I deserve the truth.”

Vincent nodded.

“You do.”

But the truth had a dangerous price.

Because someone else already knew.

Victoria Moretti stood inside an old family mansion.

The same mansion where she and Vincent grew up.

The place where secrets had been buried for decades.

She held an old file in her hands.

A file she thought would never be opened.

Inside were photographs.

Birth records.

Letters.

Everything.

Daniel Cross stood behind her.

“So she really is related to Vincent?”

Victoria didn't answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Tell me.”

Victoria finally spoke.

“She is not just related to him.”

She looked at the old photograph.

“She is his sister.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“She was born before Vincent.”

A pause.

“Our father wanted an heir.”

Daniel frowned.

“But Vincent was the heir.”

“No.”

Victoria looked at him.

“He became the heir.”

She closed the folder.

“Because Lena was hidden.”

Daniel stared.

“Why would they hide her?”

Victoria's face became cold.

“Because our father made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“He thought power belonged to men.”

She looked toward the window.

“He believed a daughter could never control the family.”

Daniel understood.

“And Vincent doesn't know?”

“He knows now.”

A slow smile appeared on Victoria's face.

“Which means everything changes.”

Back at the safe house, Lena couldn't sleep.

Her entire identity had collapsed in one day.

She had spent her whole life believing she was invisible.

Now she discovered she was connected to one of the most powerful families in America.

It should have felt like winning.

Instead, it felt like losing.

Because the old Lena…

The woman who worked quietly.

The woman who dreamed of a simple apartment and a peaceful life.

She felt like she was disappearing.

A knock came at the door.

She turned.

Vincent stood there.

“Can't sleep?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

He walked inside.

“I understand.”

She looked at him.

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Vincent looked around the room.

“Because I spent my entire life trying to become someone else.”

Lena studied him.

“The feared Vincent Moretti?”

He nodded.

“People see the name.”

A pause.

“They don't see the person.”

For a moment, they simply looked at each other.

Two people who had spent their lives being defined by things they never chose.

“Are you afraid of me?”

The question surprised her.

Lena shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

She smiled faintly.

“Because the man everyone fears was the only person who came when I called.”

Vincent looked away.

Those words affected him more than he expected.

Because nobody had ever seen him that way.

Nobody had ever separated the man from the name.

Except her.

The next morning, Vincent received a message.

A single photograph.

Lena.

Taken outside the safe house.

His expression immediately changed.

Marco entered the room.

“Boss?”

Vincent handed him the phone.

Marco's face darkened.

“They found her.”

Vincent nodded.

“No.”

He looked toward Lena.

“They were never looking for her.”

A pause.

“They were waiting for her.”

Minutes later, another message arrived.

No number.

No name.

Only words.

“Ask your sister why she erased your blood.”

Vincent stared at the screen.

Because suddenly…

The enemy wasn't outside.

It was inside his own family.

That evening, Vincent told Lena the truth.

“There is someone who wants you gone.”

She wasn't surprised.

“Victoria.”

He nodded.

Lena looked at him.

“Your sister?”

“Yes.”

A silence.

“Why?”

Vincent didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth was worse than he imagined.

“Because you were supposed to inherit something.”

“What?”

Vincent looked at her.

“The Moretti empire.”

Lena froze.

“But you're the leader.”

“Not originally.”

A pause.

“You were.”

The woman who had spent years believing she was powerless…

Had actually been the person powerful people feared.

The woman her husband called worthless…

Was the woman an entire empire had tried to erase.

And now…

Everyone who wanted her gone knew one thing:

May you like

Vincent Moretti would destroy anyone who came for her.

Even his own blood.
