CHAPTER 10 — THE NIGHT LENA STOPPED RUNNING

The world finally knew her name.

For twenty-nine years, Lena Hart had lived as someone invisible.

A waitress.

A woman nobody noticed.

A woman who learned to stay quiet because being seen only brought pain.

But overnight…

Everything changed.

Her face was on every news channel.

Her name appeared in every headline.

LENA HART — THE LOST MORETTI HEIRESS.

The same people who ignored her yesterday suddenly wanted to know everything about her today.

Where she was born.

Who raised her.

Why she disappeared.

Why Vincent Moretti was protecting her.

Everyone wanted a piece of her story.

But nobody asked the one question that mattered.

How did Lena feel?

She sat alone in the safe house living room, staring at the television.

Reporters stood outside the Moretti estate.

Cameras flashed.

People shouted questions.

“Is Lena Hart the true heir of the Moretti empire?”

“Did Vincent Moretti hide her identity?”

“Is the Moretti family facing a civil war?”

Lena turned the television off.

Silence returned.

But this time…

Silence didn't scare her.

It exhausted her.

Vincent entered the room.

He immediately noticed.

“You shouldn't watch that.”

Lena looked up.

“Why?”

“Because they don't know you.”

She smiled sadly.

“Neither do I.”

That answer stopped him.

She looked at her hands.

“My whole life, I thought my biggest problem was being invisible.”

A pause.

“Now everyone is looking.”

Vincent sat across from her.

“You can walk away.”

She looked surprised.

“What?”

“From the empire.”

A pause.

“From the name.”

He leaned forward.

“You don't owe anyone anything.”

Lena studied him.

“Not even you?”

Vincent didn't hesitate.

“No.”

The answer surprised her.

Because it was the opposite of what powerful people usually did.

They collected debts.

They demanded loyalty.

They expected obedience.

But Vincent was offering her a choice.

“Why?”

She asked quietly.

“Why are you the only person who keeps giving me choices?”

Vincent looked away.

Because the answer was something he wasn't ready to say.

Because Lena was the first person in years who didn't want anything from him.

She didn't fear his money.

She didn't chase his influence.

She didn't care about his reputation.

She had called him because she needed help.

Not because she wanted power.

And that made her different.

“I need to tell you something.”

Lena looked at him.

“About Victoria?”

“No.”

A pause.

“About Daniel.”

Her expression changed immediately.

Vincent noticed.

The fear.

The old reaction.

He hated seeing it.

“He's looking for you.”

Lena became quiet.

“Is he coming back?”

“Yes.”

The room fell silent.

For five years, Daniel had controlled her through fear.

Even now, even from a distance…

His name still had power.

But something was different.

This time, Lena didn't look broken.

She looked angry.

“He thinks I’m still the same person.”

Vincent watched her carefully.

“What do you mean?”

She stood slowly.

“He thinks he knows me.”

She walked toward the window.

“He thinks I’m still the woman who apologized after he hurt me.”

A pause.

“The woman who covered his mistakes.”

Her reflection stared back at her.

“But she’s gone.”

Vincent said nothing.

Because he knew.

Something had changed.

That evening, Lena made a decision.

A decision that shocked everyone.

“I want to meet him.”

Marco immediately objected.

“Absolutely not.”

Lena looked at him.

“I’m not asking permission.”

The room became silent.

Marco looked at Vincent.

Waiting.

But Vincent didn't immediately answer.

Because he knew this moment mattered.

This wasn't about Daniel.

It was about Lena taking back control.

Finally, Vincent asked:

“Why?”

Lena looked at him.

“Because I spent five years being afraid of him.”

A pause.

“I don't want to spend another day that way.”

The meeting was arranged.

A private location.

A restaurant that had been closed for the evening.

Security everywhere.

Vincent insisted on being there.

Lena refused.

“I need to do this.”

His expression hardened.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Vincent.”

Just hearing his name from her changed something.

She wasn't asking.

She was trusting.

“I need to prove something.”

“To him?”

She shook her head.

“To myself.”

Daniel arrived twenty minutes late.

Of course he did.

He wanted her waiting.

He wanted her nervous.

He wanted to feel powerful again.

But when he entered the restaurant…

He stopped.

Because the woman sitting at the table wasn't the same woman he left bleeding on the bathroom floor.

Lena sat straight.

Calm.

Confident.

Her arm was still healing.

But her eyes were different.

Daniel stared.

“What happened to you?”

Lena looked at him.

“You happened.”

He laughed.

“You think Vincent changed you?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“He reminded me of something.”

“What?”

“That I was already worth saving.”

Daniel sat down.

Trying to regain control.

“You have no idea what you're involved in.”

Lena almost smiled.

“That’s funny.”

“Why?”

“Because for years you told me I was too weak to survive without you.”

A pause.

“And now you're warning me about surviving?”

Daniel's face tightened.

“You don't belong with them.”

Lena looked at him.

“With who?”

“The Morettis.”

He leaned closer.

“You think they care about you?”

She stayed silent.

Daniel continued.

“They're using you.”

A pause.

“Just like I did.”

The words slipped out.

And Daniel realized too late what he had admitted.

Lena's eyes sharpened.

“You just admitted it.”

Daniel froze.

The recording device on the table quietly blinked.

“You spent years trying to convince me I was worthless.”

Her voice remained calm.

“But you knew exactly what you were doing.”

Daniel stood.

“You think this changes anything?”

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“Because now I believe myself.”

Outside, Vincent listened.

He had heard everything.

Not because he didn't trust Lena.

Because he knew Daniel.

Men like him rarely confessed.

But Lena had done something Vincent never could.

She defeated Daniel without threatening him.

Without power.

Without fear.

She simply stood in front of him as someone who no longer needed his approval.

After Daniel left, Vincent entered.

Lena looked at him.

“You heard?”

“Yes.”

She looked embarrassed.

“I didn't plan everything.”

“I know.”

A small smile appeared.

“That’s why it worked.”

She laughed softly.

And Vincent realized something.

The woman who once whispered:

“Can you please save me?”

Was gone.

But the victory was short-lived.

Because when Vincent returned to the safe house that night…

Something was waiting.

An envelope.

No name.

No address.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Lena as a child.

Standing beside Isabella Moretti.

On the back was one sentence:

“You found the wrong daughter.”

Vincent's expression changed.

Because he knew that handwriting.

Victoria.

But underneath the message was something else.

A second line.

Something that made his blood run cold.

“Lena was never the only child hidden from the Moretti family.”

Vincent looked toward Lena.

Because if Victoria was telling the truth…

May you like

Then the secret buried beneath the Moretti empire was far bigger than anyone imagined.

And the family war had only just begun.
