CHAPTER 17 — THE SISTER WHO STOLE HER OWN FAMILY’S FUTURE

The message remained on Vincent Moretti’s phone.

One sentence.

One accusation.

One question that could destroy everything.

“Ask Victoria why Isabella died before she could return for Lena.”

For thirty years, the Moretti family believed Isabella’s death was a tragedy.

An accident.

A cruel twist of fate.

But now…

A different possibility existed.

Maybe Isabella wasn't lost.

Maybe she was taken.

Vincent stared at the screen.

His hands were still.

His face was unreadable.

But Lena knew him well enough now.

She saw it.

The anger.

The disbelief.

The pain.

“What does it say?”

Vincent looked at her.

For a moment, he wanted to protect her from another truth.

Another betrayal.

Another wound.

But he had promised.

No more lies.

He handed her the phone.

She read the message.

And immediately looked toward Victoria.

Victoria stood near the window.

Silent.

Still.

But for the first time…

She didn't look powerful.

She looked afraid.

Lena noticed.

“Is it true?”

Victoria didn't answer.

“Victoria.”

The older woman closed her eyes.

And that silence was the answer.

Vincent stepped forward.

“Tell me.”

His voice was controlled.

Dangerously controlled.

“How did my mother die?”

Victoria swallowed.

“I didn't kill her.”

Nobody moved.

Because that wasn't the answer anyone expected.

It wasn't a denial.

It was a confession hiding behind different words.

“You knew something.”

Vincent said.

Victoria looked at him.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since the night it happened.”

The room became silent.

Thirty years of secrets.

Thirty years of silence.

Thirty years of pretending.

And now the truth was finally standing in front of them.

“I was twenty-three.”

Victoria's voice became quieter.

“I thought I understood the world.”

She looked at Lena.

“I thought power was everything.”

Lena listened.

Because she needed to know.

Not because she wanted revenge.

Because she needed the truth.

“Your mother discovered what your father was doing.”

Victoria continued.

“She found the accounts.”

“The hidden agreements.”

“The people controlling the family from the shadows.”

Vincent frowned.

“And she was going to expose them.”

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.”

“But someone stopped her.”

Victoria looked down.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Vincent asked.

Victoria didn't answer.

Because the name was already destroying her.

Finally, she whispered:

“Me.”

The room froze.

Even Giovanni looked shocked.

“You?”

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't plan her death.”

A pause.

“But I helped create the situation.”

Thirty years earlier…

Victoria had been angry.

She was tired of living in Isabella's shadow.

Her mother was loved.

Her brother was chosen.

And she believed she had been forgotten.

Then Charles Whitmore came to her.

He told her everything she wanted to hear.

That she deserved more.

That she was the true leader.

That Isabella was holding the family back.

And Victoria listened.

“I gave Charles information.”

Victoria admitted.

“I told him where Isabella kept the documents.”

Vincent stared.

“You betrayed her.”

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.”

A tear fell.

“I thought I was taking control.”

“But Isabella found out.”

Adrian said.

Victoria looked at him.

“Yes.”

“She confronted me.”

The memory returned.

A stormy night.

Isabella standing in the mansion hallway.

Holding documents.

Looking at Victoria with heartbreak.

Not anger.

That was the part Victoria remembered most.

Her sister wasn't furious.

She was disappointed.

“Why?”

Isabella had asked.

“Why would you do this to your own family?”

Victoria lowered her eyes.

“Because I thought you had everything.”

Lena looked at her.

“And you wanted it.”

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But I didn't know what Charles was planning.”

Vincent's voice became cold.

“What happened that night?”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Charles sent people.”

The room became still.

“I tried to stop it.”

Nobody believed her at first.

But then Giovanni spoke.

“She did.”

Everyone looked at him.

Giovanni continued:

“Victoria called me.”

The revelation shocked Vincent.

“You knew?”

Giovanni nodded.

“I arrived too late.”

His voice changed.

For the first time, everyone heard regret.

“Isabella was already gone.”

Lena felt something break inside her.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Something deeper.

Because every person in her life had carried pieces of the truth.

And everyone had decided she wasn't ready.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

Her voice trembled.

Nobody answered.

Because there was no good answer.

Vincent stepped toward her.

“Lena…”

She shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“I understand protecting someone.”

She looked at everyone.

“But you all made decisions about my life without me.”

Her voice grew stronger.

“You decided what pain I could handle.”

A tear fell.

“You decided what truth I deserved.”

Nobody spoke.

Because she was right.

That night, Vincent found Victoria alone.

She was sitting in the old family room.

The same room where Isabella used to read to them as children.

“You should hate me.”

Vincent stood there.

“I should.”

Victoria looked up.

“But?”

He looked at the photograph of their family.

“But I understand you were manipulated.”

A pause.

“That doesn't excuse what you did.”

Victoria nodded.

“I know.”

“Why did you continue?”

Vincent asked.

“After Isabella died?”

Victoria looked away.

“Because admitting the truth meant admitting I destroyed everything.”

Vincent was silent.

Then he asked:

“Do you regret it?”

Victoria answered immediately.

“Every day.”

The next morning…

Charles Whitmore made his move.

A press conference.

Live.

Broadcast across the country.

He stood in front of cameras.

Calm.

Confident.

And smiling.

“Today, I will reveal the truth about the Moretti family.”

Reporters leaned forward.

Charles continued:

“For decades, they have built their empire on lies.”

Inside the Moretti estate, everyone watched.

Then Charles showed a document.

A birth record.

A legal agreement.

And one statement:

“Lena Hart was never the rightful heir.”

The room went silent.

Lena looked at Vincent.

“What is he doing?”

Vincent stared at the screen.

Because Charles had revealed something impossible.

Something even Vincent didn't know.

Charles smiled at the camera.

“Before Isabella Moretti died…”

A pause.

“She signed a document removing Lena from the inheritance.”

Everyone froze.

Because if that document was real…

Everything changed.

Charles looked directly into the camera.

“And tomorrow…”

He smiled.

“I will prove that Lena Moretti is not the lost heir.”

A pause.

“She is the greatest lie Isabella ever created.”

The broadcast ended.

But the damage was done.

The world was watching.

The investors were panicking.

The Moretti family was divided again.

And Lena…

The woman who had finally found her identity…

Was suddenly questioning whether she had ever belonged at all.

Vincent looked at her.

“Do you believe him?”

Lena stared at the blank screen.

Then at the people around her.

Then at herself.

Finally, she whispered:

“No.”

A pause.

“But I need to know why he can make everyone believe he is right.”

Because Charles Whitmore had just started the final battle.

Not with weapons.

Not with money.

May you like

With the one thing that could destroy Lena forever.

The truth.
