CHAPTER 5 — THE SECRET LENA NEVER KNEW ABOUT HERSELF

The words repeated in Vincent Moretti’s mind.

“Lena has a connection to your family.”

For the first time in years…

Vincent Moretti felt something he hated.

Uncertainty.

He had built an empire by understanding people.

By reading their intentions before they spoke.

By seeing betrayal before it arrived.

But Lena…

Lena was different.

She was the one person he couldn't predict.

And now he discovered something impossible.

The woman he had saved from an abusive husband wasn't a stranger.

She was connected to him.

Somehow.

“Find everything.”

Vincent stood inside the quiet office of the safe house.

Marco stood across from him.

“Everything?”

Vincent looked up.

“Her entire history.”

Marco hesitated.

“Boss, Lena is just—”

“No.”

Vincent interrupted.

“She was never just anything.”

The seriousness in his voice made Marco stop.

Vincent continued:

“Birth records.”

“Family history.”

“Medical records.”

“Every place she has lived.”

“Every person connected to her.”

Marco nodded.

“Understood.”

As he turned to leave, Vincent stopped him.

“And Marco…”

“Yes?”

“Do it quietly.”

A pause.

“Victoria cannot know.”

Inside the house, Lena sat at the kitchen table.

She stared at her untouched coffee.

It was strange.

A few days ago, coffee had been her entire world.

The smell.

The routine.

The small comfort of knowing exactly what came next.

Wake up.

Work.

Smile.

Serve customers.

Go home.

Apologize.

Repeat.

But now everything was different.

She had no job.

No apartment.

No husband.

No idea what happened next.

And somehow…

That scared her more than Daniel ever did.

Because when someone spends years surviving…

Freedom can feel terrifying.

Vincent found her sitting there.

“You’re thinking too loudly.”

She looked up.

A small smile appeared.

“Is that even possible?”

“With you?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Lena looked down.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do now.”

Vincent sat across from her.

“Live.”

She blinked.

“That’s it?”

“Yes.”

“That sounds easy.”

“No.”

His answer surprised her.

“It’s not.”

He looked at the coffee cup between them.

“Sometimes surviving is easier than starting over.”

Those words touched something inside her.

Because Vincent Moretti was supposed to be untouchable.

Cold.

Dangerous.

But sitting across from her…

He sounded like someone who understood pain.

“Can I ask you something?”

Vincent nodded.

“Why do people fear you?”

The question was unexpected.

Most people avoided asking.

They whispered.

They speculated.

They created stories.

But Lena simply asked.

Vincent looked out the window.

“Because fear is useful.”

“That’s not an answer.”

A slight smile appeared.

“You’re becoming brave.”

She looked surprised.

“Was I not brave before?”

Vincent looked at her.

“You survived five years with a man who wanted to break you.”

A pause.

“That was brave.”

Lena looked away.

Nobody had ever described her survival as strength.

Only weakness.

Only failure.

That night, Vincent received the file.

He opened it alone.

The first page was ordinary.

Lena Hart.

Born twenty-nine years ago.

Raised in Queens.

Mother deceased.

Father unknown.

Nothing unusual.

Then he reached the final pages.

And stopped.

His expression changed.

Because hidden inside the records was something almost impossible.

A sealed adoption document.

A hospital report.

And one name.

A name Vincent knew better than anyone.

Isabella Moretti.

His mother.

Vincent stared at the document.

Impossible.

His mother had died twenty-five years ago.

Before Vincent became the man everyone feared.

Before the empire.

Before the power.

Before the reputation.

The report stated:

A female child was born under confidential circumstances.

The identity of the father was sealed.

The child was placed for adoption.

The record had been hidden.

Until now.

Vincent slowly closed the folder.

Because there was only one explanation.

Lena Hart…

Was connected to the Moretti family.

The next morning, Lena noticed something was different.

Vincent was quieter.

Not his usual controlled silence.

Something else.

Something heavier.

“Did something happen?”

He looked at her.

For a moment, he considered lying.

Then he remembered something.

Lena had spent years surrounded by lies.

She deserved the truth.

“We found something about your past.”

Her face changed.

“My past?”

Vincent placed the folder on the table.

“You were adopted.”

Lena stared.

“What?”

“There are records.”

She opened the folder with trembling fingers.

The more she read…

The more confused she became.

“I don't understand.”

Vincent watched her carefully.

“My mother’s name is here.”

Silence.

Lena looked up.

“Your mother?”

“Yes.”

Her hands started shaking.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“That’s impossible.”

“I know.”

“I'm not…”

She stopped.

Because she didn't know what to say.

She had spent her entire life believing she knew who she was.

Now one document had changed everything.

A memory suddenly returned.

A memory from childhood.

A small necklace.

An old woman who raised her.

A phrase she had forgotten.

“You belong to something bigger, little girl.”

Lena had never understood those words.

Until now.

She touched the small pendant around her neck.

Vincent noticed.

“Where did you get that?”

“My mother.”

“Your adoptive mother?”

Lena nodded.

“She gave it to me before she died.”

Vincent reached toward it.

Not touching.

Just looking.

Because he recognized the symbol.

A symbol from his childhood.

A symbol from his family's past.

The Moretti crest.

Meanwhile, across the city…

Victoria Moretti watched security footage.

Lena standing beside Vincent.

The necklace visible around her neck.

For the first time…

Victoria looked worried.

Because she knew what that necklace meant.

Daniel looked confused.

“What is it?”

Victoria didn't answer.

She stared at the screen.

“That girl…”

Her voice became quiet.

“She was never supposed to survive.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Victoria turned toward him.

“The plan was never just about Vincent.”

She walked closer.

“It was about removing her.”

“Why?”

Victoria looked at the image of Lena.

“Because if Vincent discovers who she really is…”

A pause.

“She becomes more powerful than all of us.”

Back at the safe house, Lena looked at Vincent.

“Tell me the truth.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

“Who am I?”

Vincent looked at the woman in front of him.

The waitress.

The survivor.

The person who had unknowingly carried a secret for decades.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“Lena…”

A pause.

“You might be the last living heir of the Moretti family.”

Her breath stopped.

The room went silent.

Because the broken waitress everyone ignored…

May you like

The woman her husband thought nobody would fight for…

Might actually be the person everyone had been searching for.
