CHAPTER 13 — THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE MORETTI FAMILY

The name at the bottom of the document haunted Vincent Moretti.

For the first time in years

He didn't know who he could trust.

Not because his enemies were stronger.

Not because the danger was greater.

But because the person who betrayed him had been standing beside him for decades.

A person who knew his secrets.

His weaknesses.

His family.

The name written on the paper was not an enemy.

It was someone Vincent had protected.

Someone he had defended.

Someone he had called family.

Marco Bellini.

Vincent stared at the document.

Impossible.

That was the only thought in his mind.

Marco had been beside him since they were teenagers.

Before the empire.

Before the power.

Before the reputation.

He was the man who stood next to Vincent when everyone else walked away.

The man who knew every operation.

Every weakness.

Every secret.

Including Lena.

“Boss?”

Marco's voice came from the doorway.

Vincent immediately closed the file.

Years of experience allowed him to hide emotions.

But Marco knew him too well.

“You found something.”

Vincent looked at him.

“Did I?”

The question was calm.

Too calm.

Marco studied him carefully.

“Is this about Adrian?”

Vincent said nothing.

And that silence was enough.

Marco entered the room.

“After all these years, you finally know?”

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

“Know what?”

Marco stopped.

For a moment, neither man moved.

Then Marco sighed.

“I was hoping you would never find out.”

The words landed harder than any confession.

Because they weren't denial.

They were acceptance.

“Why?”

Vincent's voice was quiet.

But dangerous.

“Why did you betray me?”

Marco looked down.

“I didn't betray you.”

Vincent's expression hardened.

“Then explain.”

Marco looked at the file.

“You think betrayal means lying.”

A pause.

“But sometimes betrayal is protecting someone from the truth.”

Vincent stepped closer.

“You helped erase my sister.”

Marco looked away.

“Yes.”

The answer created a silence heavier than anger.

Vincent stared at him.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Marco swallowed.

“Since the beginning.”

A memory returned.

Twenty years earlier.

A young Vincent standing beside Marco after their father's death.

The empire was unstable.

Enemies were attacking.

The family was collapsing.

Marco had made a promise.

“I will protect you.”

Vincent believed him.

And Marco had.

But he had also protected another secret.

“You knew Lena existed.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Adrian existed.”

“Yes.”

Vincent's jaw tightened.

“And you said nothing.”

Marco looked at him.

“Because your father made me promise.”

A pause.

“And because Isabella asked me to.”

That answer stopped Vincent.

“My mother?”

Marco nodded.

“She knew what would happen if the truth came out too soon.”

Vincent shook his head.

“She trusted you?”

“She trusted me because she knew I would hate myself for it.”

Marco opened his own folder.

Inside were letters.

Hundreds of pages.

Letters from Isabella.

Letters she wrote before she died.

Vincent took them.

The first sentence broke something inside him.

Marco,

If Vincent discovers the truth before he is ready, he will destroy himself trying to fix everything.

Vincent read silently.

The letters explained everything.

Isabella knew her husband.

She knew his obsession with power.

She knew he would turn his children against each other.

So she created a plan.

Hide Lena.

Protect Adrian.

And wait until Vincent became strong enough to uncover the truth without becoming like his father.

But there was one thing Isabella didn't predict.

Daniel Cross.

Victoria's betrayal.

And the violence that would bring Lena back into the Moretti world.

“She never wanted you to become this.”

Marco's voice was quiet.

Vincent looked up.

“What?”

“She was afraid you would become exactly like your father.”

The words cut deeper than any attack.

Because Vincent knew.

He had spent his life building a kingdom.

But maybe he had built it using the same methods he hated.

Meanwhile, Lena discovered another truth.

She sat with the woman who brought Isabella's letter.

Her name was Clara.

She had been Isabella's closest friend.

“You knew my mother?”

Clara smiled sadly.

“She talked about you every day.”

Lena's eyes filled.

“She knew I was alive?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't she come for me?”

Clara looked down.

“Because she was protecting you.”

Lena shook her head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

A tear fell.

“But nobody asks what it was like for me.”

Clara became silent.

Because that was the pain nobody saw.

Everyone had protected Lena.

But nobody had asked if she wanted to be protected.

That evening, Vincent returned.

Lena immediately knew something happened.

“You found something.”

He nodded.

“About my family?”

“Yes.”

She waited.

“About someone you trusted?”

Vincent looked at her.

“Yes.”

She didn't ask who.

She already knew.

Because pain looked the same on everyone's face.

“Is he gone?”

Vincent shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

A pause.

“Because I don't know if I can hate him.”

Lena was surprised.

“Why?”

“Because everyone who hurt me
”

He looked away.

“Had a reason.”

A moment passed.

“But that doesn't mean they were right.”

Lena walked closer.

“You know what I learned?”

Vincent looked at her.

“What?”

“People who hurt you always explain why they did it.”

A pause.

“But explanations don't erase pain.”

Those words stayed with him.

Because she was right.

The next morning, Vincent called a meeting.

The entire Moretti leadership gathered.

Including Marco.

Including Victoria.

Everyone expected revenge.

Everyone expected punishment.

But Vincent did something nobody expected.

He placed the documents on the table.

“The old Moretti family is finished.”

The room went silent.

Victoria smiled.

“You’re abandoning the empire?”

“No.”

Vincent looked around.

“I’m changing it.”

The elders laughed.

“You think you can change generations of tradition?”

Vincent looked at them.

“Yes.”

One man stood.

“You are weak.”

Vincent didn't react.

“No.”

A pause.

“I was weak when I thought fear was the only way to lead.”

Then the doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Lena walked inside.

Not hiding.

Not afraid.

The room became silent.

Because they finally saw her.

Not as a victim.

Not as a waitress.

Not as a forgotten child.

As the rightful heir.

Victoria stared at her.

“You look like your mother.”

Lena met her eyes.

“And you look like someone who forgot what family means.”

The room went completely silent.

Even Vincent looked surprised.

Because Lena wasn't trying to impress anyone.

She was simply telling the truth.

Then Adrian entered.

Every person in the room froze.

The missing heir.

The forgotten son.

The ghost of the Moretti family.

He looked at Vincent.

Then Lena.

And said:

“Before you rebuild this family
”

A pause.

“You need to know who destroyed it.”

Adrian placed a final file on the table.

Inside was evidence.

Bank transfers.

Secret meetings.

Orders.

And one shocking revelation.

The person who started the plan to erase Lena

Was not their father.

Was not Victoria.

Was not Marco.

It was someone still alive.

Someone with more power than all of them.

Someone who had been waiting for the Moretti family to destroy itself.

Adrian looked at Vincent.

“You have been fighting the wrong enemy.”

Vincent opened the file.

His face changed.

Because the truth was finally revealed.

The war against the Morettis

Had never been a family war.

It was an invasion.

May you like

And the person leading it

Was the one person Vincent trusted more than anyone.
