CHAPTER 6 — The Hidden Trust Agreement

Rebecca Turner stood inside the entrance hall of my family's estate.

For the first time in twenty years...

The security system had recognized someone I didn't know.

That alone should have been impossible.

My father created the entire security structure himself.

He was meticulous.

Careful.

Almost obsessive about details.

Everyone who had access to this house was someone I knew.

Family.

Close friends.

Trusted employees.

Yet Rebecca Turner...

A stranger whose name I had never heard...

Had entered the system as an authorized person.

Charlotte noticed my expression.

She understood exactly what I was thinking.

"Claire."

Her voice was calm.

"Do not assume she is a threat."

I looked at Rebecca.

"Why?"

"Because your father trusted her."

I looked toward the control panel.

"The system trusted her."

Charlotte nodded.

"And your father designed that system better than anyone."

Rebecca stood near the doorway, clutching the old envelope against her chest.

She looked uncomfortable.

Like she wasn't sure she belonged there.

Like stepping inside the mansion brought back memories she had spent years trying to forget.

"I almost didn't come."

Her voice was quiet.

I looked at her.

"Why didn't you?"

She looked down.

"Because I was afraid."

"Of what?"

Rebecca swallowed.

"Of them."

The answer was immediate.

Not hesitation.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Charlotte stepped forward.

"Who is them?"

Rebecca looked at the portraits hanging along the hallway.

At my parents.

Then back at me.

"The Holloways."

The name echoed through the entrance hall.

I felt my chest tighten.

"You knew my father because of the Holloways?"

Rebecca nodded slowly.

"I worked for your father for eleven years."

"What was your position?"

She hesitated.

"Financial analyst."

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

"At his company?"

Rebecca shook her head.

"No."

She looked at me.

"Privately."

That answer made no sense.

"My father hired you secretly?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Rebecca looked at the envelope in her hands.

"Because your father believed someone close to him was stealing from him."

The room became silent.

Another secret.

Another hidden piece of my father's life.

"Who?"

Rebecca didn't answer.

Instead, she handed me the envelope.

"Your father wrote this for you."

I stared at it.

The paper was old.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My father's.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

No explanation.

No greeting.

Just instructions.

Claire,

If you are reading this, then someone has tried to take control of what belongs to you.

I stopped breathing.

Charlotte leaned slightly closer.

I continued.

I hoped you would never need to see this.

I hoped the people around you were better than I feared.

My eyes moved down the page.

But if Damian Holloway is involved, you must understand one thing.

My heartbeat increased.

The marriage was never the beginning.

A cold sensation moved through my body.

I looked at Charlotte.

Then continued reading.

Damian entered your life because of something connected to this estate.

The words blurred for a moment.

I forced myself to continue.

Do not trust anyone who tells you they want to protect you.

Especially those who benefit from your silence.

The final sentence was underlined.

The truth is hidden where only you would look.

I lowered the paper.

My hands were shaking.

"Where only I would look?"

Charlotte repeated.

She was thinking.

Rebecca watched me carefully.

"Your father believed you would understand."

I looked around the entrance hall.

The rooms.

The memories.

Everything.

"What does that mean?"

Rebecca answered quietly.

"Your father said you were the only person who knew the house better than anyone."

I looked toward the library.

The place where I had spent my childhood.

Where I learned to read.

Where my father taught me about business.

Where Damian had walked immediately the first time he visited.

"The library."

Rebecca's expression changed.

"Yes."

The library had always been my father's sanctuary.

But now...

It felt like a locked vault.

Every book.

Every drawer.

Every painting.

Every piece of furniture.

Could contain something hidden.

Charlotte and I searched carefully.

Not randomly.

Methodically.

Because my father wasn't the type of man who hid things behind obvious tricks.

He believed intelligence was the best security.

After nearly an hour...

We found nothing.

No secret compartment.

No hidden documents.

No mysterious box.

Nothing.

I leaned against the desk.

"Maybe we're wrong."

Charlotte shook her head.

"No."

"How do you know?"

"Because your father didn't create impossible puzzles."

She looked around.

"He created meaningful ones."

I frowned.

"Meaningful?"

"Something only you would notice."

I looked around again.

Only me.

Something I knew.

Something connected to my childhood.

Then I saw it.

The old chessboard.

Sitting on the corner of the bookshelf.

My father and I played chess every Sunday morning.

A tradition.

A memory.

I walked toward it.

"This."

Charlotte looked at the board.

"What about it?"

"My father always said chess was not about winning."

I touched one of the pieces.

"It was about seeing what other people missed."

I moved the pieces.

Nothing.

I checked underneath.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something.

One chess piece was different.

The black king.

It was slightly heavier.

My fingers tightened.

I twisted it.

A small click echoed.

The entire room became silent.

A hidden compartment opened beneath the chessboard.

Inside...

Was a small metal key.

And a folded document.

I picked up the paper.

The first line made my blood run cold.

HOLLOWAY FAMILY TRUST AGREEMENT

I looked at Charlotte.

"Why would my father have a Holloway trust agreement?"

She didn't answer.

Because she already knew.

This was bigger than the estate.

I opened the document.

The first page contained names.

My father's.

Damian's.

Eleanor's.

And another name.

A name I had never heard before.

Victor Holloway.

Damian's grandfather.

The founder of Holloway Capital.

The man who built the empire Damian inherited.

I kept reading.

Then I saw the date.

Twenty-two years earlier.

Before I met Damian.

Before my parents died.

Before my marriage.

The agreement explained something I never knew existed.

A private financial arrangement between my father and the Holloway family.

But the final page...

The final page was different.

It wasn't a contract.

It was a warning.

Written by my father.

"The Holloways do not want this estate."

I turned the page.

"They want what was hidden inside it."

My breathing became shallow.

"What was hidden?"

Charlotte took the document.

She read the final paragraph.

Then her face changed.

Not fear.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

"What?"

She looked at me.

"Claire..."

Her voice was lower.

"Your father didn't hide money."

"Then what?"

She turned the page toward me.

There was a single word.

A word that changed everything.

ACCOUNT.

I stared.

"What account?"

Charlotte looked at Rebecca.

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Like she had been waiting twenty years to say the answer.

"The Blackwood Account."

The name meant nothing to me.

But the reaction from Charlotte told me everything.

Because for the first time since I met her...

My attorney looked afraid.

"What is it?"

Charlotte slowly placed the document down.

"An account your father created to expose financial crimes connected to the most powerful families in Westport."

I stared at her.

"And Damian knows about it?"

Rebecca nodded.

"Yes."

"How?"

Her answer was quiet.

"Because he was searching for it before he married you."

The room felt frozen.

Five years of marriage.

Five years of memories.

Five years of believing Damian loved me.

And now I was standing in the library where my father raised me...

Learning that my husband may have entered my life with a mission.

Not love.

Not fate.

Not coincidence.

A mission.

Then the security alarm suddenly activated.

The entire mansion went dark.

Charlotte immediately stood.

"What happened?"

I checked the security monitor.

My blood ran cold.

Someone was standing at the front gate.

Not Damian.

Not Eleanor.

Someone else.

A man wearing a dark coat.

Holding a folder.

And beneath the camera feed...

A message appeared.

AUTHORIZED FAMILY ACCESS REQUESTED.

Charlotte looked at the screen.

Then whispered:

"Impossible."

I looked at her.

"Who is it?"

She didn't answer.

Because the camera zoomed closer.

And I saw his face.

An older man.

A man I had never met.

But whose name appeared on the document in my hand.

Victor Holloway.

Damian's grandfather.

The man who had supposedly died twelve years ago.

Was standing outside my gate.

May you like

Alive.

And asking to come inside.
