CHAPTER 18 — Eleanor’s False Victory

The alarm continued.

A sharp sound.

A warning.

A reminder that someone had entered the one place they were never supposed to reach.

The estate.

My home.

My father's sanctuary.

The place built to protect secrets.

Now...

Someone had walked through its walls unnoticed.

Everyone froze.

Thomas looked confused.

Eleanor looked terrified.

Damian immediately moved toward me.

Charlotte reached for the security controls.

"Lock every entrance."

The system responded.

ACCESS DENIED.

Her expression changed.

"That shouldn't happen."

"What does that mean?"

She didn't answer.

She tried again.

Nothing.

The entire security system had stopped responding.

A system my father designed.

A system that had protected this house for decades.

Someone had overridden it.

And there was only one way.

They knew the master access.

"Everyone stay together."

Damian's voice was firm.

The old Damian.

The one who commanded rooms.

The one who knew how to handle danger.

For a moment...

I remembered why people followed him.

Why companies trusted him.

Why I once believed he could protect me.

Then I remembered the lies.

And the pain.

And the secrets.

But this time...

I didn't push him away.

Not yet.

Because right now...

Survival mattered more than anger.

Charlotte checked the cameras.

One by one.

Nothing.

No movement.

No intruder.

No footage.

"They erased everything."

I looked at her.

"Can they do that?"

She shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"Not unless they have internal authority."

Everyone became silent.

Internal authority.

The same words.

The same problem.

Someone close.

Then the library door opened.

Slowly.

Everyone turned.

A man stepped out.

Not a stranger.

Not a criminal.

Someone we all knew.

Someone who had been standing in this house for days.

Someone who had watched us search.

Watched us fight.

Watched us uncover the truth.

Rebecca gasped.

"Impossible."

I stared.

Because I knew that face.

But I didn't know the person.

It was one of the estate employees.

The man who had maintained the grounds for twelve years.

The man who watered my mother's roses.

The man who repaired the old security system.

The man my father trusted.

"Daniel."

He looked down.

"I'm sorry."

The words.

Again.

Always after betrayal.

Charlotte stepped forward.

"Who are you working for?"

Daniel didn't answer.

He looked at Eleanor.

And Eleanor looked away.

That was enough.

I felt my stomach drop.

"Eleanor."

She closed her eyes.

"No."

The word came quietly.

Not denial.

Regret.

"You knew."

I looked at her.

"You knew he was here."

She didn't answer.

"Didn't you?"

Finally...

She whispered:

"Yes."

The room exploded.

Damian looked at his mother.

"You brought someone into the estate?"

Eleanor looked at him.

"I was trying to fix this."

Damian laughed.

A painful sound.

"Fix this?"

"You helped destroy her life."

Eleanor's face broke.

"I was trying to protect you."

That sentence again.

Everyone used it.

Protect.

Protect.

Protect.

But somehow...

I was always the one who suffered.

Daniel finally spoke.

"I didn't want to do this."

Charlotte looked at him.

"But you did."

He nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

He looked at Eleanor.

"Because she threatened my family."

Silence.

Another person controlled by fear.

Another person forced into betrayal.

Another piece of Richard Vale's machine.

"Where is Richard?"

Charlotte asked.

Daniel looked afraid.

"He's coming."

My blood went cold.

"When?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Tonight."

Eleanor sat down.

For the first time...

She looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just tired.

I looked at her.

"Tell me everything."

She didn't answer.

"Now."

A long silence.

Then she began.

"When Richard first approached me..."

Damian immediately became angry.

"Stop."

But Eleanor continued.

"No."

She looked at him.

"You deserve to know too."

Her voice shook.

"I thought I could use him."

Everyone stared.

"I thought I could get enough information to protect Damian."

She looked at me.

"And you."

I almost laughed.

"Me?"

Her eyes filled with regret.

"Your father knew something about Richard."

"Something that could destroy him."

"The Blackwood Account."

I nodded.

"And you wanted it."

"Yes."

"Why?"

She looked down.

"Because I believed if I controlled it..."

"I could control Richard."

A bitter smile.

"I was wrong."

Then she revealed the part nobody expected.

Richard Vale wasn't only after money.

He was after something much older.

A secret connected to his family's collapse.

"My father destroyed his empire."

I looked at Eleanor.

"What?"

She nodded.

"Your father exposed his illegal operations."

"Richard lost everything."

"And he blamed your family."

"So he wanted revenge."

"Yes."

"But why the estate?"

Eleanor looked toward the walls.

"Because your father hid the final evidence here."

The final evidence.

The missing piece.

The thing everyone wanted.

"What evidence?"

She looked at me.

"The original Blackwood ledger."

My heart stopped.

"But we never found it."

Eleanor shook her head.

"Because your father never intended anyone to find it."

"Then where is it?"

She looked at Damian.

"He knows."

Everyone turned.

Damian froze.

"What?"

Eleanor stared at her son.

"You found it years ago."

The room went silent.

My chest tightened.

"Damian?"

He looked away.

And that was enough.

"Tell me."

His voice was quiet.

"I didn't know what it was."

"Where did you find it?"

He swallowed.

"Your father's old office."

"When?"

"Two years into our marriage."

The betrayal returned.

"Two years?"

Damian nodded.

"I thought it was just business information."

"Then what happened?"

"I showed it to my grandfather."

The room became silent.

"And?"

"He recognized it."

My voice became cold.

"And you hid it from me."

Damian looked at me.

"I was trying to protect you."

The anger returned.

"No."

I stepped back.

"You were making choices for me again."

He looked down.

Because he knew.

I was right.

Then the lights flickered.

Everyone stopped.

A sound came from the entrance.

The front door.

Opening.

Slowly.

Nobody moved.

Because everyone knew.

The person walking in...

Was the person behind everything.

Richard Vale entered the mansion.

No guards.

No lawyers.

No fear.

Just confidence.

The confidence of a man who believed he had already won.

He looked around.

At the house.

At the people inside.

Then smiled.

"Finally."

His eyes landed on me.

"Claire."

I stared at him.

The man connected to my parents' deaths.

The man who destroyed my family.

The man who had spent twenty years hunting the truth.

"You took longer than I expected."

Charlotte stepped forward.

"You should leave."

Richard smiled.

"Why?"

He looked around.

"Because everyone here knows I am right."

Nobody answered.

Because that was his game.

Create doubt.

Create fear.

Create division.

He looked at Damian.

"Tell her."

Damian's expression changed.

Richard smiled.

"Tell Claire what you found in her father's office."

Silence.

I looked at Damian.

Then Richard.

"What is he talking about?"

Richard took a step closer.

"Your husband didn't find the ledger."

A pause.

"He found something much worse."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Richard smiled.

"He found proof that your father knew who would betray him."

The room became silent.

Richard looked at me.

"And the name written on that page..."

Was one I had never expected.

I waited.

May you like

Then he said:

"Claire Holloway."
