CHAPTER 14 — The Betrayal That Changed Everything

The countdown continued.

71 hours.

59 minutes.

42 seconds.

The numbers glowed on the security panel in the library.

A digital reminder that time was disappearing.

But the message beneath it bothered me more.

"The first person who breaks will reveal the truth."

Someone wanted us under pressure.

Someone wanted fear.

Someone wanted mistakes.

And whoever created this...

Knew exactly how we would react.

Charlotte stared at the screen.

"This wasn't triggered remotely."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She stepped closer.

"The system recognized an internal command."

My stomach tightened.

"Meaning?"

She looked at everyone in the room.

"Meaning someone with access activated it."

Silence.

The kind of silence where everyone starts looking at everyone else differently.

Damian.

Victor.

Rebecca.

Even Charlotte.

Nobody was excluded.

Because the truth was simple.

The person who knew this house best...

Was the person who could hurt us most.

"I didn't activate it."

Damian spoke first.

His voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

I looked at him.

"Nobody accused you."

He nodded.

"But you thought it."

The honesty surprised me.

Before I could answer...

Victor stepped forward.

"I have access."

Everyone looked at him.

"What?"

Victor didn't look away.

"Your father gave me emergency access twenty years ago."

Charlotte immediately became cautious.

"Why?"

"Because if something happened to him, someone needed to protect Claire."

I stared.

"Then why didn't you use it?"

Victor looked at the countdown.

"Because I thought the danger had passed."

A bitter smile crossed his face.

"I was wrong."

Charlotte studied him.

"How do we know you aren't the one who activated it?"

Victor looked at her.

"You don't."

The answer was unexpected.

But honest.

And somehow...

That honesty made the room quieter.

At 2:00 AM...

Charlotte discovered something hidden inside the security logs.

A deleted access record.

Someone had tried to erase it.

"Someone was here."

I looked at the screen.

"When?"

"Yesterday."

"Before Victor arrived?"

She nodded.

"Before Rebecca arrived too."

Damian frowned.

"Then who?"

Charlotte enlarged the file.

The security system had captured a partial identity.

Not a face.

Not a name.

Only a code.

A user ID.

THW-001

I stared.

"What does that mean?"

Charlotte's expression changed.

"Thomas Whitmore."

The room froze.

My father's best friend.

The man who claimed to protect me.

The man who had filed against me in court.

He had entered the estate system.

But when?

And why?

The next morning...

We found the answer.

Not inside the house.

Inside Thomas's own records.

Charlotte had someone investigate his financial history.

The results arrived at 8:30 AM.

And the first page destroyed everything I thought I knew.

Thomas Whitmore wasn't simply working with Richard Vale.

He had been working with him for decades.

A secret partnership.

Hidden accounts.

Private transfers.

Payments disguised as consulting fees.

I looked at the documents.

"My father knew."

Charlotte nodded.

"Yes."

"He knew Thomas betrayed him."

"Yes."

"Then why did he trust him around me?"

Charlotte looked at me.

"Because your father believed Thomas loved you."

That hurt more than I expected.

Because it was exactly what made the betrayal worse.

The worst betrayals don't come from enemies.

They come from people who were allowed close.

At noon...

Eleanor requested a private meeting.

Nobody wanted me to go.

Especially Damian.

"Don't."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because my mother doesn't meet people unless she already has an advantage."

I stared at him.

"Maybe she wants to confess."

Damian gave a humorless smile.

"My mother doesn't confess."

"She negotiates."

But I went anyway.

Because I needed answers.

Not theories.

Not documents.

Answers.

The meeting took place in a private room at a hotel.

Eleanor arrived exactly on time.

Perfect appearance.

Perfect posture.

Perfect control.

As always.

She sat across from me.

For several seconds...

Neither of us spoke.

Then she said:

"You look more like your mother than I remember."

The sentence surprised me.

"You knew my mother?"

Eleanor smiled faintly.

"Everyone knew your mother."

"No."

My voice hardened.

"You knew my family."

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

"Yes."

"Then tell me the truth."

She looked away.

"The truth is complicated."

"No."

I leaned forward.

"The truth is simple."

"You helped someone destroy my family."

Her eyes narrowed.

"You think I wanted that?"

"I don't know what you wanted."

I paused.

"But I know what you did."

For the first time...

Eleanor looked tired.

Not powerful.

Not arrogant.

Tired.

"I made mistakes."

I almost laughed.

"Mistakes?"

"You destroyed my marriage."

"You tried to take my home."

"You helped Richard Vale."

Her expression tightened.

"I never wanted Richard to win."

That caught me.

"What?"

Eleanor looked at me.

"I thought I could control him."

A dangerous sentence.

Because everyone who works with powerful criminals eventually says the same thing.

"I thought I could control him."

"And?"

She looked down.

"I was wrong."

Then she told me something I never expected.

Eleanor wasn't originally trying to steal the estate.

She was trying to hide the Blackwood Account.

From Richard.

From Thomas.

From everyone.

Including Damian.

"Why?"

I asked.

"Because Richard killed your parents."

I froze.

"I know."

Her eyes filled with something I had never seen before.

Regret.

"I knew what he was capable of."

"Then why didn't you stop him?"

Her voice broke slightly.

"Because I was trying to protect my son."

I stared.

"Damian?"

She nodded.

"Richard threatened him."

A silence followed.

"Richard knew Damian was involved."

"Not willingly."

Eleanor looked away.

"Richard knew Damian saw too much."

"And you protected him."

"Yes."

"By destroying me."

Her silence answered.

When I returned to the estate...

Something was wrong.

The gates were open.

The security system was offline.

And Charlotte was standing in the entrance hall holding a file.

Her face was pale.

"What happened?"

She didn't answer.

She handed me the file.

Inside was a document.

A confession.

Signed by Eleanor Holloway.

My hands shook.

"What is this?"

Charlotte looked at Damian.

Then back at me.

"Eleanor confessed."

"To what?"

Charlotte's voice became quiet.

"To helping arrange your parents' accident."

The room disappeared.

I couldn't hear anything.

Couldn't think.

Couldn't breathe.

"No."

Damian stepped forward.

"Claire..."

I backed away.

"No."

Because suddenly...

Every secret.

Every lie.

Every hidden truth.

Pointed in one direction.

Eleanor.

The woman who stood outside my gates.

The woman who smiled when my marriage ended.

The woman who wanted my home.

Had been connected to the worst moment of my life.

But then...

I noticed something.

The signature.

The confession.

The handwriting.

Something was wrong.

Charlotte saw it too.

"Claire..."

I looked at her.

"This isn't Eleanor's confession."

"What?"

I pointed at the signature.

"This isn't her handwriting."

The room became silent.

Charlotte took the document.

Compared it.

Then her face changed.

Because she realized the truth.

Someone had forged Eleanor's confession.

And whoever created it...

Wanted one thing.

They wanted us to destroy each other.

A phone rang.

Damian answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then his face went pale.

He slowly lowered the phone.

"That was the court."

Charlotte stood.

"What happened?"

Damian looked at me.

"The judge signed the freeze order."

The countdown continued.

64 hours remaining.

And now...

May you like

Our enemies didn't need to break us.

They had found a way to make us break ourselves.
