CHAPTER 12 — The Enemy Inside The Courtroom

The name remained on the screen.
Richard Vale.
For several moments...
Nobody spoke.
The room felt frozen.
Not because we didn't know who he was.
Because we did.
Everyone in that room understood the same thing at the same time.
The person we had been chasing...
Was never hiding.
He had been standing behind everyone else.
Moving pieces.
Creating distractions.
Allowing Eleanor.
Allowing Thomas.
Allowing Damian.
To take the blame.
Charlotte closed the laptop slowly.
"This changes everything."
I looked at her.
"How?"
She looked toward the documents scattered across the table.
"Because until now, we believed this was a family conflict."
"It isn't."
She tapped the screen.
"This is an organized operation."
Damian stared at Richard Vale's photograph.
His expression was impossible to read.
But I could see the anger beneath it.
"You know him."
It wasn't a question.
It was a statement.
Damian nodded.
"My grandfather knew him."
"How?"
"Business."
He looked at Victor.
"Old business."
Victor remained silent.
That silence told me enough.
There was history.
A long history.
"Someone explain."
Victor slowly sat down.
"Richard Vale was once considered one of the most influential businessmen in Connecticut."
"Then what happened?"
"Your father discovered he was moving money through illegal channels."
I looked at the Blackwood documents.
"The account."
Victor nodded.
"The Blackwood Account was created to expose him."
"So my father and the Holloways worked together?"
Victor looked down.
"Yes."
The answer surprised me.
Because the Holloways had spent years pretending my family was their enemy.
But the truth was more complicated.
"Then why did everything fall apart?"
Victor looked at Damian.
"Because people became greedy."
Twenty years earlier...
Before I knew Damian.
Before my parents died.
Before the divorce.
There had been an alliance.
My father.
Victor Holloway.
And several other business leaders.
They created a system to track financial crimes hidden behind legitimate companies.
The Blackwood Account.
A secret record.
A weapon.
Not for money.
For justice.
But Richard Vale discovered it.
And when he did...
He didn't try to destroy the account.
He tried to control it.
"Your father refused."
Victor continued.
"So Richard changed tactics."
"What tactics?"
Charlotte answered.
"Destroy the people protecting it."
The words were simple.
But devastating.
My parents' accident.
The collapse of relationships.
The manipulation.
The marriage.
Everything suddenly connected.
The next morning...
Court began.
Not a criminal trial.
Not yet.
An emergency estate hearing.
The kind of hearing where decisions could be made quickly.
Sometimes before all facts were known.
Exactly the environment people like Richard Vale preferred.
Because speed created mistakes.
The courthouse was packed.
Reporters outside.
Lawyers everywhere.
And at the center...
Thomas Whitmore.
Eleanor.
And their attorney.
They looked confident.
Too confident.
That worried me.
People who knew they were losing usually looked nervous.
They looked prepared.
Charlotte noticed too.
"They have something."
I looked at her.
"How do you know?"
"Because people don't walk into court smiling unless they believe they have control."
She adjusted her jacket.
"Stay calm."
The doors opened.
We entered.
The opposing attorney stood first.
His name was Gregory Sloan.
A man known for winning difficult estate cases.
He approached the judge with a carefully prepared story.
"Your Honor, this case concerns the protection of an individual who may have been manipulated into controlling assets beyond her emotional capacity."
There it was.
The first attack.
Not ownership.
Not money.
Me.
My mental state.
My ability.
Charlotte stood.
"Objection."
The judge looked at her.
"Sustained."
Gregory continued.
"Your Honor, we are simply asking whether Mrs. Holloway is currently capable of making responsible decisions."
I wanted to laugh.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was insulting.
The same people who tried to steal my home were now pretending they were protecting me.
Charlotte stood.
"Your Honor, my client has managed inherited assets successfully for years."
Gregory smiled.
"With assistance from her husband."
There it was.
Damian's name.
The weapon.
Charlotte remained calm.
"My client's former husband has no legal authority over her inherited estate."
Gregory looked toward Damian.
"Interesting."
The judge noticed.
"Mr. Holloway is present today?"
Damian stood.
"Yes, Your Honor."
Gregory smiled.
"Then perhaps he can explain why he attempted to gain control of the estate six months ago."
The courtroom shifted.
I looked at Damian.
He didn't move.
Because we both knew.
The evidence existed.
The draft agreement.
The attempted transfer.
The documents from his office.
Gregory continued.
"Your Honor, we have evidence showing Mr. Holloway believed his wife was unable to manage the estate alone."
A murmur spread.
Charlotte immediately stood.
"That document was fabricated."
Gregory looked amused.
"Convenient."
Charlotte's eyes narrowed.
"Very."
The judge raised a hand.
"Enough."
Everyone became quiet.
"I want evidence."
Not accusations.
Evidence.
Charlotte nodded.
"Of course, Your Honor."
She walked toward the evidence table.
And placed the first document.
The inheritance trust.
"The estate belongs exclusively to Claire Holloway."
Second document.
"The trust agreement prevents unauthorized transfer."
Third.
"The attempted ownership claim was made before any legal review."
Then Charlotte placed something else.
The room changed.
A photograph.
The old picture.
Damian and my father.
Twenty years earlier.
Gregory looked surprised.
The judge leaned forward.
"What is the relevance?"
Charlotte answered.
"Because this proves the relationship between Damian Holloway and Claire's family existed long before their marriage."
The courtroom became silent.
Gregory recovered quickly.
"So?"
Charlotte looked at him.
"So the opposing side wants this court to believe Damian married Claire because of her assets."
She paused.
"But the evidence shows the Holloway family had knowledge of Claire's inheritance before the marriage began."
A stronger silence.
The judge looked toward Damian.
"Mr. Holloway."
Damian stood.
"Did you know about the estate before your marriage?"
Every eye turned toward him.
This was the moment.
The moment where the truth could destroy him.
He looked at me.
Then answered.
"Yes."
The courtroom erupted.
Whispers.
Shock.
The judge raised his hand.
Silence returned.
"Explain."
Damian took a breath.
"I knew Claire came from a wealthy family."
"Before marriage?"
"Yes."
"And you still married her?"
"Yes."
Gregory smiled.
He thought he had won.
But then Damian continued.
"But I did not marry her for her assets."
The smile disappeared.
"I married her because my family wanted access to something inside the estate."
The courtroom went silent.
The judge frowned.
"What something?"
Damian looked at Charlotte.
Then at me.
"The Blackwood Account."
The entire room changed.
Because nobody outside our group knew that name.
Nobody.
Except one person.
Gregory Sloan.
His reaction lasted less than a second.
But Charlotte saw it.
I saw it.
And Damian saw it.
He knew.
The opposing attorney knew about the account.
Charlotte stepped closer.
"Your Honor."
She looked directly at Gregory.
"I believe we need to discuss how opposing counsel knew information that was never disclosed in this hearing."
Gregory's face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
The judge looked at him.
"Mr. Sloan?"
No answer.
"Mr. Sloan."
Still nothing.
Then suddenly...
His phone vibrated.
He glanced down.
And for the first time...
His confidence disappeared.
Because whatever message appeared on that screen...
Changed everything.
He stood quickly.
"Your Honor, I request a recess."
The judge frowned.
"Denied."
Gregory swallowed.
Then whispered:
"This is bigger than I thought."
Charlotte looked at him.
"No."
Her voice was cold.
"It is bigger than you knew."
Outside the courtroom during recess...
Charlotte pulled me aside.
"He knew."
I looked at her.
"Gregory?"
She nodded.
"Someone gave him information."
"Richard Vale?"
"Possibly."
Damian joined us.
His face was serious.
"Not possibly."
We looked at him.
"I know who did."
"Who?"
He looked back toward the courtroom doors.
"The person who has been controlling this entire case."
A pause.
Then he said:
"My mother."
I froze.
"Your mother?"
Damian nodded.
"But not because she wanted the estate."
"Then why?"
His expression darkened.
"Because Eleanor is afraid."
"Of what?"
Damian looked at me.
"Of what Richard Vale will do if she fails."
Before I could respond...
Charlotte's phone rang.
She answered.
Her face changed.
Then she handed me the phone.
A message had arrived.
From Richard Vale.
Only one sentence.
"Claire, ask Damian why he never told you about the night your parents died."
I looked at Damian.
His face had gone pale.
Because whatever happened that night...
May you like
He knew.
And he had never told me.
