CHAPTER 13 — The 72-Hour Deadline

The message remained on Charlotte's phone.
One sentence.
One sentence that felt heavier than every document, every accusation, and every secret we had uncovered.
"Claire, ask Damian why he never told you about the night your parents died."
I stared at Damian.
For the first time since I had known him...
He looked like someone who had no way out.
Not because he was caught.
Because he had been carrying something for years.
Something he knew would eventually destroy everything.
"Damian."
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard the question.
"What happened that night?"
He didn't answer.
That hurt more than anything.
Because silence was confirmation.
Charlotte stepped between us.
"Not here."
Damian looked at her.
"She deserves to know."
Charlotte studied him.
"Then tell her somewhere safe."
I looked around.
The courthouse hallway.
The reporters.
The lawyers.
The strangers watching.
Everyone wanted a story.
Everyone wanted a reaction.
But this wasn't a performance.
This was my life.
We returned to the estate an hour later.
Nobody spoke during the drive.
Not Charlotte.
Not Damian.
Not me.
The mansion looked different when we arrived.
Not because anything had changed.
Because I had.
For years, I thought these walls represented everything I inherited from my parents.
A home.
A legacy.
A memory.
Now I understood something.
This house was also a battlefield.
Every room contained a secret.
Every person connected to it carried a hidden truth.
Inside the library...
Damian finally spoke.
"I should have told you."
I stood near the fireplace.
"Yes."
The word was simple.
But it carried everything.
He nodded.
"I know."
"Then why didn't you?"
He looked down.
"Because I was afraid."
I almost laughed.
"Afraid of what?"
"Of losing you."
The answer angered me.
"Damian..."
I turned toward him.
"You already lost me."
The words hit him.
I saw it.
But he accepted it.
"I know."
A long silence followed.
Then he said:
"The night your parents died..."
He stopped.
Took a breath.
And continued.
"I was there."
My entire body went still.
"What?"
Charlotte looked at him.
"You never mentioned that."
Damian nodded.
"Because I was never supposed to."
The room became silent.
"Explain."
He walked toward the desk.
The same desk where my father had hidden years of secrets.
"My grandfather sent me."
I stared.
"Your grandfather?"
"Victor."
"Why?"
Damian looked at the floor.
"To deliver information to your father."
My heart started beating faster.
"What information?"
"The truth about Richard Vale."
I froze.
"Your grandfather knew?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't he stop it?"
Damian's expression changed.
"Because he tried."
He looked at me.
"But he was too late."
Twenty years earlier...
Damian was twenty years old.
Not the powerful businessman everyone knew today.
Not the man with influence.
Not the person people feared.
Just a young man caught between two powerful families.
Victor Holloway had discovered Richard Vale's plan.
He knew Richard was trying to take control of the Blackwood Account.
He knew Eleanor had become involved.
And he knew my father was in danger.
So he sent Damian.
But Damian arrived too late.
He reached the meeting location moments after everything happened.
The accident.
The crash.
The fire.
The chaos.
"My father was there?"
Damian nodded.
"Yes."
"What did he see?"
His eyes met mine.
"Enough to know it wasn't an accident."
The room went silent.
My hands became cold.
"Who caused it?"
Damian hesitated.
Then answered:
"Richard Vale."
The name felt like a final piece of a puzzle that had taken twenty years to complete.
But there was still something I didn't understand.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Damian looked away.
"Because I had no proof."
"Because my grandfather told me not to."
"Because Eleanor knew I had been there."
I frowned.
"What did that mean?"
Damian's voice became darker.
"It meant she knew I could destroy her."
"And she used that against you."
He nodded.
"She told me if I ever revealed what I knew..."
"She would make sure you became the target."
My chest tightened.
"So you stayed silent."
"Yes."
"You married me."
"Yes."
"Knowing everything."
His eyes closed.
"Yes."
The honesty hurt.
But it also changed something.
Because the worst thing about Damian wasn't that he lied.
It was that he believed protecting me justified destroying my trust.
That evening...
Charlotte received a new court notice.
Not from Thomas.
Not from Eleanor.
From Richard Vale.
A legal filing.
A direct challenge against the Blackwood Account.
Charlotte read it carefully.
Then placed it down.
"This is serious."
I looked at her.
"How serious?"
"He knows we have the account."
"And?"
"He is requesting emergency control over all assets connected to it."
I frowned.
"But he can't."
"Normally, no."
"Normally?"
Charlotte nodded.
"There is a problem."
"What problem?"
She turned the document around.
The request included a temporary freeze order.
If approved...
Every asset connected to the Blackwood Account would be frozen.
Including parts of my inheritance.
For seventy-two hours.
I stared.
"Seventy-two hours."
Charlotte nodded.
"The court will review the evidence after that."
"And if Richard wins?"
She didn't answer immediately.
She didn't need to.
I understood.
That night...
The estate became a war room.
Files covered the dining table.
Documents.
Photographs.
Financial records.
Everything my father left behind.
We had seventy-two hours.
Seventy-two hours to prove:
Richard Vale orchestrated the attack on my family.
Thomas Whitmore betrayed my father.
Eleanor helped hide the truth.
And Damian...
Was either the person who destroyed my life.
Or the person who had spent years trying to save it.
The problem?
The evidence was incomplete.
Charlotte looked through the files.
"We are missing one thing."
"What?"
"The original Blackwood ledger."
I frowned.
"The account documents aren't enough?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Because the account proves financial crimes."
She looked at me.
"But it doesn't prove who ordered them."
I understood.
We had the weapon.
Not the person holding it.
"Where is the ledger?"
Nobody answered.
Then Rebecca spoke.
"Your father hid it."
We all looked at her.
"Where?"
She hesitated.
"Somewhere Richard Vale could never reach."
"Where?"
Rebecca looked around the room.
At the mansion.
At the walls.
At the floors.
Then whispered:
"Under the estate."
At midnight...
We discovered something hidden beneath the old library floor.
A small metal hatch.
A place nobody had noticed.
Not Damian.
Not Eleanor.
Not even Charlotte.
Inside was an empty compartment.
Except for one thing.
A note.
My father's handwriting.
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
"If they found this, they already know too much."
My heart sank.
Then I turned the page.
There was another message.
Different handwriting.
Not my father's.
Damian's.
I looked at him.
He became pale.
"What?"
He stepped closer.
"That's impossible."
I read the words aloud.
"Claire, trust no one. Not even the man standing beside you."
The room became silent.
Because the message was written years before Damian and I met.
Before our marriage.
Before anyone knew we would become connected.
Charlotte looked at Damian.
Then at me.
"Someone knew this moment would happen."
The lights suddenly flickered.
The security system activated.
A new alert appeared.
72-HOUR COUNTDOWN STARTED.
Nobody touched the system.
Nobody entered a command.
But the timer had begun.
And beneath it...
A final message appeared.
"The first person who breaks will reveal the truth."
I stared at the screen.
Because I finally understood.
This was no longer a fight over an estate.
It was a race.
May you like
A race to discover who would betray everyone first.
And we had only three days left.
