CHAPTER 17 — Claire’s Counterattack

The document in Thomas Whitmore's hand was visible even through the security camera.
A single piece of paper.
A simple object.
Yet everyone inside the mansion understood what it represented.
Another weapon.
Another lie.
Another attempt to rewrite history.
Thomas stood outside the gates beside Eleanor.
Not arguing.
Not threatening.
Standing together.
That was the part that disturbed me most.
Because for days, they had played different roles.
Eleanor was the angry mother-in-law.
Thomas was the trusted advisor.
Richard Vale was the invisible force.
Everyone had a position.
Everyone had a mask.
But now...
Two masks had been removed.
And they were no longer pretending.
"They're working together."
Damian's voice was quiet.
I looked at him.
"Didn't you already know?"
He shook his head.
"No."
A bitter smile crossed his face.
"My mother and Thomas hated each other."
Charlotte looked at the screen.
"People don't need to like each other to share the same enemy."
She paused.
"They only need to fear the same consequence."
The consequence.
The Blackwood Account.
The truth.
The thing everyone had spent twenty years trying to hide.
The intercom activated.
Thomas spoke first.
"Claire."
His voice sounded calm.
Almost friendly.
The same voice I remembered from childhood.
The same voice that told me everything would be okay after my parents died.
The same voice that lied.
"I know you're listening."
I didn't answer.
Thomas continued.
"I think we have reached the point where honesty is necessary."
Charlotte almost laughed.
"Honesty?"
She looked at the speaker.
"That's an interesting word from you."
Thomas ignored her.
"I have something that belongs to Claire."
I stared at the document.
"My father's signature."
Thomas smiled.
"Yes."
"You forged it."
His expression didn't change.
"I expected you to say that."
"Because it's true."
"No."
His voice became colder.
"Because that is what Charlotte told you to believe."
The manipulation was obvious.
But it was dangerous.
Because lies didn't need to be completely believable.
They only needed to create doubt.
Thomas held up the document.
"This agreement proves your father transferred control of certain assets before his death."
"Your estate."
"The company interests."
"The Blackwood Account."
I felt anger rising.
"You expect me to believe my father would give everything away?"
Thomas looked at me.
"I expect you to believe your father knew he was dying."
Silence.
A cruel tactic.
Use a painful truth.
Wrap it inside a lie.
Charlotte stepped beside me.
"Do not respond emotionally."
I nodded.
Because this time...
I wasn't going to play his game.
For twenty years...
Everyone had underestimated one thing.
Me.
They thought because I was emotional...
I was weak.
They thought because I valued family...
I was naive.
They thought because I wanted peace...
I couldn't fight.
They were wrong.
My father didn't leave me only a house.
He left me something more important.
The ability to think.
The ability to observe.
The ability to wait.
And finally...
The ability to fight back.
I looked at Charlotte.
"Open the gates."
Everyone turned toward me.
Damian immediately shook his head.
"No."
I looked at him.
"He wants control."
"He wants a reaction."
"Yes."
I looked at the monitor.
"So I'll give him one."
Charlotte studied my expression.
Then slowly smiled.
"You're ready."
I nodded.
"For the first time."
Thomas and Eleanor entered the estate.
But this time...
They were not walking into my home.
They were walking into my trap.
The gates opened.
The security system remained active.
Every camera recorded.
Every conversation captured.
Every movement documented.
Thomas entered first.
Eleanor followed.
Neither looked nervous.
They believed they had already won.
That was their mistake.
They walked into the entrance hall.
The same place where Eleanor had stood days earlier demanding access.
The same place where Thomas had pretended to care about my future.
Now they stood there as enemies.
Thomas looked around.
"The house hasn't changed."
I looked at him.
"No."
A pause.
"But I have."
That made him uncomfortable.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
"Claire."
Eleanor spoke softly.
"I know this is difficult."
I looked at her.
"Don't."
She stopped.
"Don't pretend."
Her face hardened.
"I came here to prevent further damage."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"You came here because you're losing."
Thomas's expression changed.
Eleanor looked at me.
"You think you understand everything."
"No."
I looked at the documents.
"But I understand enough."
Thomas placed the document on the table.
"Then read it."
I didn't touch it.
Instead, I looked at him.
"Why are you so desperate for me to accept this?"
He frowned.
"Because it is the truth."
"No."
I shook my head.
"Because you need me to accept it."
Silence.
A small crack.
"Why?"
I continued.
"Because if I don't..."
"You lose your legal argument."
Thomas said nothing.
Charlotte stepped forward.
"Exactly."
She opened her briefcase.
"And that is why this conversation is being recorded."
Thomas's expression changed.
"What?"
Charlotte smiled.
"Every word."
Eleanor looked around.
"You tricked us."
"No."
Charlotte calmly answered.
"You entered voluntarily."
The first trap closed.
Thomas became angry.
The calm disappeared.
Finally.
"You think this changes anything?"
His voice became sharper.
"You still don't know the whole truth."
I stared at him.
"Then tell me."
He laughed.
"You really want to know?"
"Yes."
He looked at Damian.
"Ask him."
Everyone became silent.
Thomas pointed at Damian.
"He knows."
Damian's face hardened.
"Don't."
Thomas smiled.
"Tell her."
I looked at Damian.
"What does he mean?"
Damian didn't answer.
Thomas continued.
"Your husband wasn't just sent to protect you."
"He was sent because Victor believed he could control you."
My stomach tightened.
Damian looked away.
And that hurt.
Because silence again.
Always silence.
"Is it true?"
Damian finally spoke.
"Partly."
Thomas laughed.
"Partly?"
Damian looked at me.
"My grandfather wanted information."
"About the account."
"Yes."
"And you agreed."
A pause.
"Yes."
The honesty hurt.
But this time...
I didn't break.
Because I was beginning to understand.
Everyone had underestimated me because they thought truth would destroy me.
But truth didn't destroy me.
Lies did.
And I was done living inside them.
I turned toward Thomas.
"Thank you."
Everyone looked confused.
Thomas frowned.
"For what?"
"For proving something."
"What?"
I smiled.
"That you were desperate enough to reveal your own strategy."
His expression changed.
"What are you talking about?"
Charlotte opened a folder.
One I had never seen before.
"Thomas Whitmore."
His face changed.
Charlotte placed documents on the table.
"Bank records."
"Private transfers."
"Communications with Richard Vale."
"Payments to the company that created the fake ownership documents."
Thomas stared.
Impossible.
Because he thought he controlled the evidence.
He didn't know we had spent the last twenty-four hours searching somewhere else.
Not the Blackwood Account.
His account.
"Where did you get those?"
Charlotte smiled.
"From the person you trusted least."
Thomas looked around.
"Who?"
The answer came from the doorway.
Rebecca.
Everyone turned.
She stood there.
Holding another folder.
Thomas's face went pale.
"No."
Rebecca walked forward.
"I am sorry."
Thomas laughed.
"You?"
His voice became cruel.
"You think anyone will believe you?"
Rebecca looked at me.
Then at Charlotte.
"I recorded everything."
She placed a small device on the table.
"Every instruction."
"Every threat."
"Every payment."
Thomas stopped smiling.
Because now he understood.
The person he manipulated...
Had become the person who could destroy him.
The room became silent.
For the first time...
Thomas Whitmore looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Afraid.
Charlotte gathered the documents.
"This is enough to challenge the freeze order."
Damian looked at me.
"We can win."
I looked at Thomas.
Then Eleanor.
Then the house around me.
The house that had held the truth for twenty years.
"We are not finished."
Damian frowned.
"What?"
I looked at the documents.
"This proves Thomas betrayed my father."
"But it doesn't explain everything."
Charlotte understood immediately.
"The person above him."
I nodded.
Richard Vale.
The real architect.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I opened it.
One sentence.
Congratulations, Claire. You found the first traitor.
Another message appeared.
Now find the one who has been protecting me.
My blood went cold.
Because beneath the message...
Was a photograph.
A photograph taken inside my house.
Five minutes earlier.
While we were all standing in the room.
Someone had been watching us.
Someone was still inside.
Charlotte looked around.
Damian reached for the security panel.
Then the alarm sounded.
INTERNAL ACCESS DETECTED.
Not outside.
Inside.
The enemy wasn't approaching anymore.
They were already here.
May you like
And whoever it was...
Had been listening to everything.
