Chapter 6 - The First Betrayal

“Ryan.”

My voice sounded strange in the darkness.

Almost unfamiliar.

He didn't answer.

The emergency lights flickered on.

His gun remained pointed at the floor.

Not at us.

That somehow made it worse.

Because it meant he hadn't decided what he was going to do.

“Put the gun down.”

He shook his head.

“I can't.”

“You're my best friend.”

“I know.”

“Then explain.”

Ryan's eyes filled with something that looked like regret.

“I didn't want it to happen this way.”

“What way?”

He looked at Emily.

“I never wanted her involved.”

Emily stepped forward.

“You already involved me.”

Ryan flinched.

“You attacked my wife.”

“No.”

“Someone did.”

“I didn't.”

“But you knew.”

He lowered his head.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“You knew Chloe was going to attack Emily.”

Ryan didn't answer.

“Didn't you?”

“Yes.”

I felt like I'd been punched.

“How long?”

“Three weeks.”

Three weeks.

He had known.

For three weeks, he had watched me kiss my wife goodbye every morning.

He had congratulated us on our son.

He had stood beside me at work.

And all the while—

he knew.

“Why?”

He finally looked at me.

“Because your father hired me.”

I stared.

“For what?”

“To find the second trust.”

“And you agreed?”

“I thought it was money.”

“You thought stealing from my unborn child was a business transaction?”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“I thought your father wanted to protect the company.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You believed him?”

“At first.”

“And then?”

“I learned the truth.”

“What truth?”

Ryan looked toward the boxes.

“Your grandfather didn't hide the second trust because he wanted to protect the money.”

“Then why?”

“Because the money wasn't the most dangerous thing.”

“What was?”

Ryan looked at Emily.

“The person who would inherit it.”

My stomach tightened.

“My son.”

Ryan nodded.

“Your grandfather believed the child would eventually have enough voting power to remove your father from Carter Holdings.”

“And?”

“And your father would do anything to prevent that.”

I stepped closer.

“You helped him.”

“I tried to stop him.”

“When?”

“After I found out about the loans.”

“That's not an answer.”

Ryan swallowed.

“I contacted James.”

I froze.

“You worked with James Whitaker?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To protect the trust.”

“Then why are you holding a gun?”

“Because James betrayed me.”

“How?”

“He wasn't protecting the trust.”

Ryan looked toward Emily.

“He was protecting the second beneficiary.”

I frowned.

“There is only one beneficiary.”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

Silence.

“What?”

“The trust has two beneficiaries.”

I looked at Emily.

She looked as confused as I was.

“That's impossible.”

Ryan pulled out a document.

“Read it.”

I took it.

The original trust named our son as primary beneficiary.

Then another name appeared.

A secondary beneficiary.

My grandfather's handwriting.

EMILY CARTER.

I stared.

“Why?”

Ryan shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Emily whispered:

“Daniel…”

I looked at her.

She was crying.

“I never knew.”

Ryan lowered the gun.

“Neither did I.”

I stared at the document.

Then I noticed something else.

A condition.

If the child is threatened before birth, the secondary beneficiary assumes temporary control of all protected assets.

I looked at Emily.

“That means…”

“She controls the trust if someone attacks you.”

Ryan nodded.

“And that's why Chloe attacked you.”

Emily covered her mouth.

“They wanted me to sign.”

“Exactly.”

“Because if I signed away my rights…”

“They could bypass the protective clause.”

I looked at Ryan.

“Who knew about this?”

“Your father.”

“Chloe?”

“Yes.”

“My mother?”

“I don't know.”

“James?”

“Yes.”

“Alexander Vane?”

Ryan's face hardened.

“Yes.”

I felt sick.

“How did they get the document?”

Ryan pointed at the box.

“Someone inside the trustee's office leaked it.”

“Who?”

“We don't know.”

Then the vault lights came back on.

The screen behind us activated.

My grandfather appeared again.

This time there was no warning.

Only one sentence.

THE FIRST BETRAYAL WAS COMMITTED BY THE WOMAN WHO RAISED YOU.

I stared.

My mother.

Ryan looked at me.

“Daniel…”

I shook my head.

“No.”

The recording continued.

My grandfather's voice came through.

“Margaret was not supposed to know about the second trust.”

I couldn't breathe.

“She discovered it anyway.”

The screen went black.

Emily whispered:

“Your mother.”

I turned toward Ryan.

“You knew.”

“No.”

“You suspected.”

“Yes.”

“And you didn't tell me.”

“I didn't have proof.”

“You knew enough.”

Ryan looked down.

“I was trying to get proof.”

“By working for my father.”

“Yes.”

I took a step toward him.

“You betrayed me.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt more than an excuse.

Then he put the gun down.

“I deserve whatever you do to me.”

I stared at him.

“Why did you bring us here?”

“To show you the truth.”

“You could have killed us.”

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

He looked at Emily.

“Because I have a daughter.”

Silence.

“She is six.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“And when I saw Chloe hitting Emily…”

He looked away.

“I realized I had become exactly what I hated.”

I said nothing.

Ryan pushed the gun across the floor.

“I'm done.”

Then footsteps echoed above us.

Ryan's face changed.

“They found us.”

“Who?”

He whispered:

“Vane.”

The vault door shook.

Once.

Twice.

Then someone shouted:

“Daniel!”

I recognized the voice.

My father.

“Open the door.”

I looked at Ryan.

“Can they get in?”

“Eventually.”

“How long?”

“Five minutes.”

Emily grabbed my hand.

“Then we have four minutes to find a way out.”

Ryan nodded.

“There is another exit.”

“Where?”

He pointed toward the far wall.

“Behind the shelves.”

We moved.

Outside, my father's voice grew louder.

“You don't understand what you're doing!”

I shouted back:

“I understand enough.”

He laughed.

“No, Daniel.”

His voice became cold.

“You don't understand who your wife really is.”

Emily froze.

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

My father continued:

“Ask her about the name Elena.”

Emily's face went white.

I stared at her.

“Emily?”

She couldn't speak.

“Who's Elena?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to tell you.”

My father laughed from the other side of the door.

“She knows.”

I stepped toward Emily.

“Tell me.”

She shook her head.

“Daniel…”

“Who is Elena?”

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“My sister.”

I froze.

“You don't have a sister.”

“I did.”

“What happened?”

“She died.”

“When?”

“Twenty-three years ago.”

I stared at her.

“Why did my father bring her up?”

Emily looked terrified.

“Because your father knows what happened.”

“What happened?”

“My sister disappeared.”

The vault door shook violently.

My father shouted:

“Daniel! Open this door!”

Ryan pushed the hidden panel.

A narrow passage appeared.

“Move!”

We rushed inside.

The panel closed behind us.

Darkness swallowed us.

Emily was breathing heavily.

I held her hand.

“Tell me everything about Elena.”

She whispered:

“She was eighteen.”

“What happened to her?”

“She disappeared after meeting a man.”

“Who?”

Emily looked at me.

“Alexander Vane.”

My heart stopped.

The passage seemed to become colder.

“Vane knew your sister?”

“He was the last person seen with her.”

“Did the police investigate?”

“Yes.”

“What did they find?”

“Nothing.”

I stared at her.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because my father warned me.”

“Your father?”

“He told me if I ever spoke about Elena, the people responsible would come after me.”

I stopped.

“Your father knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why marry me?”

She started crying.

“Because I didn't know your family was involved.”

I stared at her.

“Are you saying my family knew what happened to your sister?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

She looked down.

“Your grandfather investigated.”

I froze.

“And?”

“He discovered Elena wasn't dead.”

The words hit me like a hammer.

“What?”

“She was alive.”

“Where?”

Emily shook her head.

“He found her.”

“When?”

“Six years ago.”

My heart raced.

“Where is she?”

Emily whispered:

“She was being held somewhere.”

“By whom?”

She looked at me.

“Alexander Vane.”

I felt something inside me break.

My father.

My grandfather.

Alexander Vane.

The second trust.

The missing woman.

Everything was connected.

Then Ryan stopped walking.

“What?”

He pointed ahead.

A faint light was visible.

We moved toward it.

A metal door opened into an abandoned underground parking garage.

We emerged.

No one was there.

For a moment, I thought we had escaped.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

“Daniel.”

I froze.

“Who is this?”

A pause.

Then:

“Your grandfather told me you'd eventually find Vault 714.”

My heart stopped.

“Who are you?”

“I've been waiting twenty-three years to tell you the truth.”

“Who are you?”

The woman breathed shakily.

“My name is Elena.”

I couldn't speak.

Emily covered her mouth.

Ryan stared at me.

The woman continued:

“I'm Emily's sister.”

I looked at Emily.

Tears were streaming down her face.

“Where are you?”

“Not far.”

“Tell me.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because they're listening.”

“Who?”

She whispered:

“Your mother.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Emily was trembling.

“My mother?”

I looked at her.

Then at Ryan.

Then toward the dark tunnel behind us.

And suddenly I realized the family war had changed.

We weren't fighting over twelve million dollars anymore.

We were fighting over a woman who had been missing for twenty-three years.

A woman my grandfather had found.

A woman Alexander Vane had hidden.

And a woman my own mother apparently knew was alive.

Then my phone received one final message.

A photograph.

It showed Elena.

Alive.

Older.

Terrified.

Standing behind a locked iron gate.

And beside her stood my mother.

Margaret Carter.

Smiling.

May you like

The message beneath the photograph contained only four words:

SHE KNOWS EVERYTHING, DANIEL.
