Chapter 13 - The Second Trust

Thomas Mercer stood behind Alexander Vane with a gun pressed against Ryan's head.
For one terrible second, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.
Ryan couldn't either.
“Dad?”
Thomas's jaw tightened.
“Don't make me do this.”
Ryan stared at him.
“You disappeared for twenty-three years.”
“I know.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I know.”
“You watched me grow up from a distance?”
Thomas's eyes filled with tears.
“I had no choice.”
Vane laughed.
“Everyone always has a choice.”
I stepped forward.
“Let him go.”
Vane pointed his weapon at me.
“Stay exactly where you are.”
Emily moved closer to me.
Elena stood frozen beside the wall.
Michael raised his gun.
Vane immediately turned toward him.
“Drop it.”
Michael didn't.
“You've taken enough from this family.”
Vane smiled.
“You're still pretending you're one of them.”
Michael's face hardened.
“You used me.”
“Of course I did.”
Vane looked at Thomas.
“Just as I used him.”
Thomas's hand trembled.
Ryan noticed.
“Dad.”
“Don't.”
“You don't have to do this.”
Thomas looked into his son's eyes.
“I spent twenty-three years keeping you alive.”
“Then don't destroy me now.”
Vane's smile disappeared.
“Enough.”
He pushed the gun harder against Ryan's temple.
“Where is the original trust?”
I held the metal box behind me.
“Right here.”
Vane's eyes narrowed.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“Then Ryan dies.”
Thomas flinched.
I looked at Ryan.
He shook his head.
“Don't give it to him.”
Vane laughed.
“Brave.”
Ryan stared at me.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
“I am.”
“Whatever happens, don't give him the trust.”
Vane cocked the weapon.
I tightened my grip on the box.
Then Emily whispered:
“Daniel.”
I looked at her.
She pointed toward the floor.
A small red light was blinking beneath the examination table.
Recording equipment.
My grandfather's emergency system.
I understood.
He had expected this.
I slowly placed the box on the floor.
Vane smiled.
“Good.”
He stepped forward.
I kicked the box underneath the table.
Vane's expression changed.
“Get it.”
One of his men rushed forward.
At that exact moment, the room exploded with sound.
A siren.
Lights.
A recording.
Samuel Carter's voice filled the room.
“If you're hearing this, someone has attempted to seize the Carter inheritance by force.”
Vane froze.
Samuel continued.
“The second trust will remain concealed until the rightful heirs stand together.”
Vane looked around.
“What is this?”
James smiled.
“Your grandfather's final protection.”
The recording continued.
“The trust cannot be opened by one person.”
A light appeared on the wall.
Three fingerprint scanners.
Samuel's voice continued.
“It requires three bloodline beneficiaries.”
I looked at Ryan.
Then Elena.
Then Emily.
Ryan understood.
“It's us.”
James nodded.
“Elena. Ryan. And the unborn child.”
Vane fired.
The bullet struck the wall.
Michael tackled him.
The room erupted.
Thomas pulled Ryan away.
James dragged Emily behind a concrete pillar.
I tackled one of Vane's men.
The man struck me across the face.
I fell.
Then Ryan appeared behind him.
One blow.
The man collapsed.
Ryan looked at me.
“Get up.”
I stood.
“Your father?”
Ryan turned.
Thomas was fighting another man.
For the first time in twenty-three years, father and son were standing on the same side.
Vane escaped through the rear corridor.
Michael chased him.
“Don't!”
I ran after them.
We reached the basement.
Vane disappeared through a steel door.
Michael slammed against it.
Locked.
Then he noticed the blood on his hand.
He stared at it.
A strange smile appeared.
“What?”
He looked at me.
“Vane always leaves a second door.”
He pulled a knife from the wall.
Inserted it beneath the door frame.
A hidden mechanism clicked.
The door opened.
Inside was a room filled with documents.
Bank accounts.
Property deeds.
Company records.
Photographs.
And dozens of passports.
Vane had been building identities.
For years.
Michael picked up a folder.
“Look.”
I opened it.
Blackstone Meridian.
Carter Holdings.
Private accounts.
Millions transferred through shell companies.
Then I found something worse.
A list of names.
At the top:
SAMUEL CARTER — REMOVED
Second:
ELENA CARTER — REMOVED
Third:
THOMAS MERCER — REMOVED
Fourth:
RYAN MERCER — TERMINATION PENDING
Fifth:
NOAH CARTER — TERMINATION PENDING
My blood ran cold.
Noah.
My unborn son.
Vane had already marked him for death.
Then I noticed another name.
DANIEL CARTER — TERMINATION PENDING
My father looked at me.
“Now you understand.”
“This isn't about the company.”
“No.”
He looked at the list.
“He's eliminating every person who can legally expose him.”
We returned to the examination room.
The original trust was still underneath the table.
But something had changed.
The metal box was open.
The documents were gone.
I looked at James.
“Who took them?”
Nobody answered.
Then Ryan looked at Thomas.
“Dad?”
Thomas shook his head.
“I didn't.”
Elena stepped backward.
“I didn't.”
Emily looked at me.
“I didn't.”
I suddenly noticed Margaret standing in the doorway.
My mother.
She was holding the trust.
Everyone froze.
“Mom.”
She looked at me.
“I had to.”
I stepped toward her.
“You stole it?”
“No.”
“Then give it back.”
She held it tightly.
“I can't.”
“Why?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because this isn't the second trust.”
She turned the first page.
“This is only the key.”
I stared.
“The real trust is somewhere else.”
James's face changed.
“What?”
Margaret looked at him.
“Your grandfather never kept the second trust in the vault.”
She looked at me.
“He hid it inside the family itself.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
She whispered:
“The second trust is a person.”
Silence.
I couldn't understand.
“A person?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Margaret looked at Ryan.
Then Elena.
Then Emily.
Finally, she looked at me.
“Your grandfather created a living trust.”
I felt a chill.
“The beneficiary isn't an account.”
She pointed toward Emily's stomach.
“It is the child.”
Emily froze.
“No.”
May you like
Margaret nodded.
“Your son is the second trust.”
