Chapter 12 - The Father's Confession

The gunfire stopped.

For three seconds, there was complete silence.

Then the emergency lights flickered on.

Emily stood halfway down the stairs.

Her face was pale.

I ran to her.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded.

“The baby?”

“He's moving.”

I held her.

Then I looked at my father.

Michael was staring at the letter.

His face had lost all color.

“You know who killed Grandpa.”

He said nothing.

“Dad.”

Still nothing.

I walked toward him.

“Who killed Samuel?”

He closed his eyes.

“I did.”

The words struck harder than the gunshot.

Emily gasped.

Ryan stared.

Elena covered her mouth.

I couldn't move.

“You?”

Michael nodded.

“I killed him.”

My voice became a whisper.

“Why?”

“Because he found out.”

“Found out what?”

“That I had been working with Vane.”

I shook my head.

“You said Vane came later.”

“He did.”

“You said Grandpa discovered the debts.”

“He discovered more than the debts.”

“What?”

Michael looked at me.

“He discovered that Vane had been laundering money through Carter Holdings.”

I froze.

“How much?”

“Hundreds of millions.”

Ryan stared.

“And you helped him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“You murdered your own father because you were afraid?”

“He wasn't my father.”

The room went silent.

I frowned.

“What?”

Michael looked toward Samuel's grave outside.

“Samuel raised me.”

His voice broke.

“But I wasn't his biological son.”

Elena stared at him.

“What are you saying?”

Michael whispered:

“Daniel Carter was my father too.”

I felt the ground disappear beneath me.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You're saying…”

“Daniel Carter had two hidden children.”

He pointed toward Elena.

“Her.”

Then toward himself.

“Me.”

I stared.

Elena looked devastated.

“You're my brother.”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

Ryan stepped back.

“This is insane.”

“No,” James said quietly.

“This is the truth.”

I looked at Michael.

“If Daniel Carter was your father…”

“Then I was entitled to part of the inheritance.”

“But Samuel denied you.”

“He denied everyone.”

Michael's voice grew bitter.

“He took control of the company. He erased Daniel's other children. He changed the records.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel had wanted Elena to inherit everything.”

Elena shook her head.

“I never knew.”

“Of course you didn't.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“You were hidden before you could even understand what the word inheritance meant.”

I looked at him.

“And Grandpa?”

“He tried to fix it.”

“How?”

“By creating the trusts.”

I remembered the $12 million.

The second trust.

The 22%.

The 20%.

The succession agreement.

Everything had been an attempt to repair decades of stolen inheritance.

“But why kill him?”

Michael looked down.

“Because Vane found me.”

“What did he offer?”

“Money.”

“That's it?”

“No.”

He looked at Elena.

“He promised to erase her.”

Elena stepped backward.

“What does that mean?”

“He promised she would disappear forever.”

Michael's eyes filled with tears.

“I believed him.”

“And you killed Grandpa.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I confronted him in his study.”

Michael swallowed.

“He told me I was a coward.”

I stared.

“What happened?”

“He showed me the original succession documents.”

“The ones naming Elena?”

“Yes.”

“He told me I would receive nothing.”

“And then?”

“I lost control.”

Michael's voice cracked.

“I pushed him.”

Everyone went silent.

“He fell.”

“You killed him.”

“I didn't mean to.”

“But you did.”

“Yes.”

“Then what happened?”

“I panicked.”

“Vane came?”

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

“He took the documents.”

“Which documents?”

“The original trust.”

I felt my blood run cold.

“So Vane has had the original trust for twenty-three years?”

“No.”

Michael shook his head.

“He never found it.”

I stared.

“Then what did he take?”

“A copy.”

“And the original?”

Michael looked at me.

“Your grandfather hid it.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

James smiled faintly.

“Neither did Vane.”

I looked at him.

“Then why is he after Emily?”

“Because he finally knows where to look.”

I turned toward Emily.

She was holding her stomach.

“What does Emily have?”

James answered:

“The key.”

I remembered the brass key from Vault 714.

“No.”

James nodded.

“The key was never for the vault.”

I froze.

“It was for the final trust.”

Outside, headlights appeared.

Dozens of them.

Vane's men had surrounded the cemetery.

James looked toward the windows.

“We have minutes.”

“Then we leave.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“There's nowhere to run.”

“What do you suggest?”

“Finish what your grandfather started.”

“How?”

“Find the original trust.”

I looked at the key.

“Where?”

James looked at Emily.

“Inside St. Agnes.”

I stared.

“We already searched it.”

“Not completely.”

“What did we miss?”

“The delivery room.”

My heart tightened.

“The delivery room?”

James nodded.

“The room where Elena gave birth.”

We returned to St. Agnes before sunrise.

The old building looked different in the darkness.

Like it was waiting.

James unlocked the delivery wing.

We entered.

The room was covered in dust.

A broken examination table sat against the wall.

Emily stood in the doorway.

“This is where she gave birth?”

“Yes.”

Elena walked inside.

She touched the wall.

“I remember this.”

Her eyes closed.

“I remember holding him.”

Ryan stood beside her.

“You held me?”

“For a few seconds.”

Elena smiled through tears.

“They took you away before I could say goodbye.”

Ryan took her hand.

“I’m here now.”

I looked around.

Something was wrong.

The room was too clean in one corner.

I walked toward it.

A section of floorboards had been replaced.

I knelt.

Pulled one loose.

Underneath was a metal box.

James whispered:

“Your grandfather.”

I opened it.

Inside was a sealed packet.

And a photograph.

Samuel Carter stood beside Daniel Carter.

Between them was a newborn child.

On the back:

THE LAST CARTER.

I turned the photograph over.

A handwritten note was attached.

If Elena survives, protect her son.

Then another line.

If her son survives, protect his child.

I stared at Emily.

Her eyes widened.

“No.”

I opened the sealed packet.

Inside was the original succession trust.

The document everyone had been searching for.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Daniel Carter.

And beneath it was a clause I had never seen.

I read it aloud.

“Upon the birth of the next direct descendant…”

I stopped.

Emily whispered:

“What?”

I continued.

“…control of the Carter estate shall transfer to the child, regardless of the survival of any previous heir.”

I looked at my unborn son.

The trust wasn't waiting for Ryan to die.

It was waiting for Noah to be born.

Then I saw the final paragraph.

My hands began shaking.

It said:

“The child shall not inherit alone.”

Beside the clause was a second beneficiary.

Elena Marie Carter.

Then a third.

Ryan Thomas Mercer.

And finally—

Daniel Carter and Emily Carter.

I looked at James.

“This isn't just an inheritance.”

“No.”

“What is it?”

James answered:

“It's a transfer of control.”

“To whom?”

“To all of you.”

A loud crash came from the hallway.

Someone had entered the building.

James closed the box.

“Vane.”

I pulled Emily behind me.

Ryan stepped beside us.

Elena looked toward the door.

My father reached for a weapon from one of the guards.

I stared at him.

“You're going to fight?”

Michael nodded.

“I'm going to finish what I started twenty-three years ago.”

The hallway filled with footsteps.

Then Alexander Vane appeared.

He smiled.

“Finally.”

His eyes dropped to the metal box.

“You found it.”

I stepped forward.

“You're not getting it.”

Vane laughed.

“You still think this is about money.”

He looked at Ryan.

Then Elena.

Then Emily.

“No.”

His smile disappeared.

“This is about blood.”

He raised his gun.

And behind him stood a man I never expected to see.

Thomas Mercer.

Ryan's father.

Alive.

But holding a gun against his own son's head.

Ryan whispered:

“Dad?”

Thomas looked at him.

“I'm sorry.”

May you like

Vane smiled.

“Now we can finally finish this.”
