Chapter 15 - The $40 Million Secret

The photograph disappeared from my phone.
One second, it was there.
The next, the screen went black.
I stared at it.
Ryan stepped closer.
“What happened?”
“The file was remotely deleted.”
James took my phone.
“That shouldn't be possible.”
“It just happened.”
He looked at the screen.
Then his expression changed.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“Your phone is compromised.”
I looked around the room.
“So is the building.”
Margaret nodded.
“Vane has been inside the Carter system for years.”
“How?”
She hesitated.
“Through the company servers.”
Ryan's face hardened.
“Impossible.”
“You're the COO,” I said.
He looked at me.
“Yes.”
“Then how did he get access?”
Ryan slowly shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Thomas suddenly spoke.
“I do.”
Everyone turned.
Thomas reached into his coat and pulled out an old access card.
“This was issued twenty-three years ago.”
James stared at it.
“That system was destroyed.”
“No.”
Thomas shook his head.
“It was buried.”
He placed the card on the table.
“The underground headquarters survived.”
I looked at the card.
A symbol was printed on it.
BM-01.
Blackstone Meridian.
“Where is the entrance?”
Thomas looked at Margaret.
She answered.
“Beneath the old Carter building.”
We left immediately.
The old Carter building stood downtown, abandoned for nearly a decade.
Its windows were black.
Its marble entrance was covered in dust.
But the security cameras were still working.
Ryan looked up.
“Those weren't there yesterday.”
“Vane installed them,” Thomas said.
We entered through the side door.
The elevator still worked.
Ryan inserted the access card.
Nothing happened.
Then he pressed the basement button.
The elevator descended.
Past B1.
Past B2.
Past B3.
Past B4.
Then the numbers disappeared.
The elevator kept going.
Emily held my hand.
“How deep?”
Thomas answered:
“Seven floors.”
I looked at him.
“Vault 714.”
He nodded.
“We built it.”
The elevator stopped.
The doors opened.
A corridor stretched ahead.
Unlike the abandoned building above, this level was immaculate.
White walls.
Black cameras.
Steel doors.
A red line ran along the floor.
Ryan stepped forward.
Every light turned on.
Then a voice echoed through the hallway.
“Welcome home, Daniel Carter.”
I froze.
The voice belonged to my grandfather.
Samuel.
James looked stunned.
“That recording wasn't supposed to exist.”
We followed the voice.
It led us into a massive underground chamber.
Screens covered the walls.
Bank accounts.
Property records.
Corporate holdings.
International transfers.
And one number appeared in the center.
$40,817,442.19
Emily stared.
“What is that?”
James whispered:
“The second trust.”
I looked at the screens.
Forty million dollars.
But then another number appeared.
$112,400,000.00
Ryan stepped forward.
“What is that?”
Thomas answered.
“The assets.”
I looked at him.
“What assets?”
“Companies.”
“Which companies?”
Thomas pointed at the screens.
“Every company your grandfather secretly acquired.”
I stared.
Carter Holdings wasn't the empire.
It was merely the visible part.
The hidden trust controlled shipping companies.
Insurance firms.
Real estate.
Private equity funds.
Technology firms.
Mining rights.
Energy contracts.
The total value exceeded four hundred million dollars.
I turned toward James.
“Why did Grandpa hide all of this?”
“Because he knew someone would steal it.”
“Who?”
James looked at Michael.
My father lowered his head.
“Me.”
I stared at him.
“You knew about this.”
“Yes.”
“And you still worked with Vane.”
“I didn't know the full amount.”
“You knew enough.”
He nodded.
“I was desperate.”
Ryan stepped toward him.
“You killed Samuel for money you didn't even know existed.”
Michael looked at him.
“I killed him because Vane convinced me your grandfather was going to destroy everyone.”
“You believed him?”
“Yes.”
Thomas laughed bitterly.
“He manipulated all of us.”
I looked at the screens.
“What exactly is the second trust?”
James pointed.
“Look.”
A document appeared.
CARTER FAMILY CONTINUITY TRUST
Beneficiaries:
Elena Marie Carter.
Ryan Thomas Mercer.
Noah Carter.
Daniel Carter.
Emily Carter.
Trust value:
$40,817,442.19.
But beneath it was another line.
CONTROLLED ASSETS: $112,400,000.
Then another.
VOTING CONTROL: 50%.
I stared.
“Fifty percent of Carter Holdings.”
“Yes.”
“Then Vane can't control the company.”
“Not legally.”
“Then why is he doing all this?”
James looked at me.
“Because he doesn't need to own the company.”
“What does he need?”
“Control of the trust.”
I looked at the screen.
A final clause appeared.
If all listed beneficiaries are deceased, incapacitated, or legally disqualified, control transfers to the emergency trustee.
“Who is the emergency trustee?”
Nobody answered.
I turned toward James.
“Who?”
He looked away.
I understood.
“Vane.”
James nodded.
My stomach dropped.
“So that's the plan.”
“Yes.”
“Kill us.”
“Yes.”
“Disqualify Elena.”
“Yes.”
“Destroy Ryan's identity.”
“Yes.”
“And force Emily into a legal situation where she loses custody of Noah.”
James nodded.
“Then Vane becomes trustee.”
Ryan stared at the screen.
“And controls over one hundred million dollars.”
“And fifty percent of Carter Holdings.”
I looked at Emily.
“He needs our child.”
“Yes.”
Then a message appeared on the largest screen.
YOU HAVE 4 HOURS.
Below it:
BRING ELENA.
Another message appeared.
OR I RELEASE THE RECORDING OF YOUR FATHER'S MURDER.
Michael looked up.
“What?”
James stared at him.
“You told me there was no recording.”
“I didn't know.”
The screen changed.
A video began.
Samuel Carter sat behind his desk.
Twenty-three years younger.
Michael stood across from him.
And behind Michael—
Alexander Vane.
Samuel looked directly at the camera.
“If you're watching this, Michael has already betrayed me.”
Michael closed his eyes.
The video continued.
“I don't blame him.”
I stared.
My grandfather sounded tired.
“Vane has threatened my family.”
The screen flickered.
“He wants Elena.”
A younger Elena appeared in another room.
Pregnant.
Terrified.
Samuel continued.
“And he wants her child.”
Michael whispered:
“I didn't know.”
The recording continued.
“I have created a second trust.”
Samuel placed a folder on the desk.
“It contains everything Vane believes he has stolen.”
Then he looked directly into the camera.
“But there is one secret even Vane must never learn.”
The video stopped.
I stared.
“What secret?”
James walked toward the console.
“I don't know.”
The screen suddenly displayed another file.
ACCESS DENIED.
Ryan stepped forward.
“Try my fingerprint.”
Nothing.
Elena tried.
Nothing.
I tried.
Nothing.
Emily stepped forward.
The screen flashed.
AUTHORIZED.
Everyone froze.
Emily stared at her own hand.
“Why me?”
James whispered:
“Because your grandfather trusted the mother of the final heir.”
The screen opened.
A video appeared.
Samuel Carter smiled.
“Emily.”
My wife began crying.
“If you're seeing this, then my plan succeeded.”
Samuel looked directly at the camera.
“You married into a family that will try to destroy you.”
Emily covered her mouth.
“Don't let them.”
The recording continued.
“Your child carries the final key.”
A pause.
“But there is something you must know.”
Samuel leaned closer.
“Your husband is not the only person I chose to protect.”
The screen changed.
A birth certificate appeared.
I looked at it.
Then everything inside me stopped.
The name wasn't Noah.
It was mine.
DANIEL CARTER.
I stared at the screen.
My date of birth.
My mother's name.
My father's name.
Everything I had known.
Then one line appeared:
BIOLOGICAL FATHER: DANIEL CARTER SR.
I looked at Michael.
“What does this mean?”
He was crying.
I felt the room tilt.
James whispered:
“Your father isn't Michael.”
Silence.
I looked at my mother.
She couldn't meet my eyes.
“Mom?”
She began sobbing.
Michael stepped forward.
“I raised you.”
I stared at him.
“But you aren't my father.”
“No.”
“Who is?”
He looked at Elena.
Then at me.
“Your biological father was Daniel Carter.”
The founder.
My grandfather's brother.
Elena's father.
My father.
And suddenly the impossible became possible.
Elena wasn't merely Ryan's mother.
She was my blood relative.
Ryan wasn't merely my best friend.
He was family.
And Noah wasn't simply the next heir.
He was the continuation of the same bloodline.
I turned toward Emily.
She looked just as shocked.
Then the lights went red.
A warning flashed.
INTRUSION DETECTED.
Ryan looked at the door.
“They're here.”
Thomas raised his weapon.
“Vane.”
The steel doors began closing.
A voice echoed through the facility.
“Daniel.”
Alexander Vane.
“You finally discovered who you really are.”
The lights went out.
Then the doors locked.
May you like
And a second message appeared:
FIVE MINUTES UNTIL THE VAULT SELF-DESTRUCTS.
