Chapter 11 - The Woman Who Knew

For several seconds, nobody moved.

My father's words hung in the room like smoke.

“If Ryan dies, everything passes to your child.”

Emily instinctively covered her stomach.

I stepped between them.

“You're not touching my wife.”

Michael Carter laughed quietly.

“You still don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

“No.”

His eyes moved toward Ryan.

“You think Vane wants money?”

Ryan's expression hardened.

“What does he want?”

“My father.”

I looked at him.

“Your father?”

Michael nodded.

“Thomas Mercer.”

Ryan went completely still.

“My father disappeared twenty-three years ago.”

“He didn't disappear.”

Michael looked toward Elena.

“He was taken.”

Elena's face drained of color.

“No.”

Michael turned toward her.

“You know exactly what happened.”

Elena shook her head.

“You promised me you would never tell him.”

“I promised you many things.”

“Michael.”

“I kept you alive.”

Elena's voice broke.

“And you destroyed my life.”

Silence.

I looked between them.

“What happened twenty-three years ago?”

Neither answered.

I grabbed my father's collar.

“Tell me.”

Police officers moved closer.

Michael didn't resist.

He looked strangely calm.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Then ask the woman who knew.”

I looked at Elena.

She closed her eyes.

“I knew your grandfather was going to die.”

My grip loosened.

“What?”

Elena looked at me.

“Samuel Carter knew someone inside the company was stealing from him.”

“Vane?”

“No.”

“Who?”

She looked toward Michael.

“Your father.”

The room went silent.

Michael didn't deny it.

My stomach turned.

“You betrayed Grandpa?”

“I made one mistake.”

“One?”

“I believed I could control Vane.”

Elena stepped forward.

“You brought him to us.”

Michael's face hardened.

“And I saved you from him.”

“You sold me to him first.”

“I didn't know what he would do.”

Elena's voice trembled.

“You knew.”

I looked at my father.

“You helped Vane find Elena.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he had something I wanted.”

“What?”

“Money.”

The answer was almost too simple.

Michael continued.

“Your grandfather had discovered that I had borrowed against company shares. I was drowning in debt. Vane offered to erase everything.”

“And in exchange?”

“Information.”

“About Elena.”

“Yes.”

I felt sick.

“What did you tell him?”

“Where she was.”

Elena wiped her tears.

“He gave them my location.”

I stared at Michael.

“And then?”

“Vane took her.”

“Where?”

“An underground clinic.”

St. Agnes.

The hospital records.

Everything suddenly made sense.

“What happened to Elena's baby?”

Michael looked at Ryan.

“Thomas took him.”

Ryan's eyes widened.

“To protect him.”

Michael nodded.

“Your grandfather ordered Thomas to take the baby and disappear.”

Ryan whispered:

“And Elena?”

“You were told she died.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I believed it.”

“You believed what?”

“That my baby was dead.”

Her voice shattered.

“I woke up alone.”

Ryan stepped toward her.

“Mom…”

She looked at him.

“I searched for you.”

Ryan began crying.

“I didn't know.”

“I know.”

“I swear I didn't know.”

She touched his face.

“I know.”

I turned toward my father.

“Why didn't you tell her?”

“Because Vane threatened her.”

“With what?”

Michael looked at Elena.

“With the truth.”

“What truth?”

Michael's expression changed.

“Your grandfather wasn't Elena's biological father.”

I frowned.

“We already know that.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You don't.”

He looked directly at me.

“Elena was born from a secret marriage.”

I stared.

“To whom?”

Michael whispered:

“Daniel Carter.”

My breath caught.

Not me.

The founder.

My grandfather's older brother.

The man whose name had been erased from half the family records.

Elena's biological father.

The true founder.

The original owner.

The man who had created the succession agreement.

Michael continued.

“Daniel Carter left behind a second family.”

“Where?”

“Outside the company.”

“Why?”

“Because Samuel hated what his brother had done.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Michael looked at her.

“You were never supposed to know.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“But I did.”

Everyone looked at her.

She whispered:

“Daniel Carter visited my mother every year.”

I stared.

“My grandfather's brother?”

“Yes.”

“He knew you existed?”

“He knew everything.”

“Then why did he hide you?”

“Because Samuel threatened to destroy the company if Daniel ever claimed his daughter.”

I felt a chill.

“So the entire Carter empire was built on a lie.”

Elena nodded.

“Almost everything you were told was a lie.”

That night, James took us to a secure house outside the city.

Ryan sat beside Elena.

They barely spoke.

Twenty-three years of missing memories could not be repaired in one conversation.

Emily slept upstairs.

The baby was moving normally.

For the first time in hours, I could breathe.

James placed a folder on the table.

“This is everything we recovered from St. Agnes.”

I opened it.

Birth records.

Adoption papers.

DNA reports.

Hospital invoices.

Then I saw something strange.

A document dated the day Ryan was born.

The mother:

ELENA MARIE CARTER

The child:

DANIEL CARTER

But underneath the name was a handwritten note.

TRANSFERRED TO THOMAS MERCER — 03:40 A.M.

I looked at Ryan.

“Your father took you at 3:40.”

Ryan nodded.

“Where did he take me?”

James answered.

“To a safe house.”

“Where?”

James hesitated.

“Boston.”

Elena suddenly looked up.

“Boston?”

“Yes.”

She covered her mouth.

“I lived there.”

Ryan looked at her.

“What?”

“For six years.”

James nodded.

“Your mother was kept under protection in Boston.”

“But I was there.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't we meet?”

“Because Thomas believed Vane had people watching you.”

Ryan looked devastated.

“He was protecting me.”

“Yes.”

I closed the file.

“Then why did he disappear?”

James's face changed.

“Because someone betrayed him.”

“Who?”

James didn't answer.

I stared at him.

“Who?”

He finally whispered:

“Your mother.”

I froze.

“What?”

Margaret Carter had been sitting silently near the window.

She slowly stood.

“I didn't betray Thomas.”

James looked at her.

“You gave Vane the location.”

“I was trying to save Elena.”

“You put Thomas in danger.”

“I had no choice.”

“Everyone says that.”

My mother looked at me.

“Daniel, I need you to understand.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I've spent my entire life believing this family protected each other.”

I pointed at the files.

“You all destroyed each other.”

She began crying.

“I made one decision.”

“What decision?”

“I gave Vane the location.”

Elena stared at her.

“Why?”

Margaret looked at Elena.

“Because he had Ryan.”

Ryan went pale.

“What?”

“He had already found you.”

She looked at Ryan.

“He knew you were Thomas's adopted son.”

“But he didn't know you were Elena's biological son.”

Margaret nodded.

“I traded your location for Elena's life.”

Ryan stared at her.

“And Thomas?”

“He escaped.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

James stepped forward.

“You knew.”

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

“You knew where he went.”

“I knew where he was supposed to go.”

“Where?”

She whispered:

“The Carter family cemetery.”

At midnight, we went there.

The cemetery was surrounded by iron gates.

Rain fell steadily.

James led us toward the oldest mausoleum.

Samuel Carter's name was carved above the entrance.

But James didn't stop there.

He walked behind the structure.

There was a stone wall.

He pressed his hand against one brick.

A hidden door opened.

Inside was a narrow staircase.

We descended.

At the bottom was a small room.

A chair.

A desk.

A tape recorder.

And one envelope.

Ryan picked it up.

His hands shook.

The envelope was addressed to him.

TO MY SON, IF YOU EVER FIND THIS.

He opened it.

Thomas's handwriting filled the page.

Ryan read silently.

Then he stopped.

“What?”

Ryan handed me the letter.

I read.

“Ryan,

If you're reading this, then the family has finally found you.

Do not trust Michael Carter.

Do not trust Alexander Vane.

And above all, do not trust the person who tells you your mother is safe.

Because the woman who knows where Elena is hiding the final trust is the same woman who knows who killed Samuel.”

I looked at Margaret.

She went pale.

Ryan turned the page.

There was one final sentence.

“The killer is still alive.”

Then another line.

“And he is closer to Daniel than anyone knows.”

The lights went out.

A gunshot exploded outside.

Elena screamed.

Emily shouted from upstairs.

I ran toward the staircase.

Then I heard a man's voice through the darkness.

“Daniel!”

I stopped.

It was Alexander Vane.

“Bring me the original trust.”

His voice echoed through the cemetery.

“Or the next person I bury will be your wife.”

I looked at Ryan.

Then Elena.

Then my mother.

And suddenly I understood.

Vane wasn't hunting the inheritance anymore.

May you like

He was hunting the person who knew the truth about Samuel Carter's death.

And that person was inside this house.
