Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the Trust

I read the message three times.

YOU HAVE 24 HOURS TO FIND VAULT 714—OR YOUR SON WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT HIS GRANDFATHER LEFT HIM.

My hands were shaking.

Not because of the threat.

Because of the photograph.

Emily was asleep in her hospital bed.

The picture had been taken from inside her room.

Whoever sent it had been close enough to touch her.

I called the hospital immediately.

“Security.”

“This is Daniel Carter. My wife is Emily Carter, room 814.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Lock down her floor.”

A pause.

“Sir?”

“No visitors. No exceptions.”

“Is there a problem?”

“Yes.”

“What kind?”

“Someone is inside the hospital taking photographs of my wife.”

The security officer's tone changed.

“Understood.”

“I'll be there in ten minutes.”

I hung up.

My mother was staring at me.

“Daniel.”

I turned.

“Did you know your father had access to the old Carter building?”

She shook her head.

“Not officially.”

“What does that mean?”

“Your grandfather kept things beneath that building that your father was never supposed to find.”

“What things?”

“I don't know.”

“You knew about the vault.”

“I knew there was a vault.”

“You knew about the second trust.”

“I knew your grandfather was hiding something.”

“Mom.”

She looked at me.

“I didn't know it was worth forty million dollars.”

I believed her.

For the first time in years, I believed my mother.

Because fear had changed her face.

She wasn't afraid of losing money anymore.

She was afraid of what might happen to Emily and the baby.

I grabbed my keys.

“I'm going to the hospital.”

She stood.

“I'm coming.”

“No.”

“Daniel—”

“You need to stay somewhere safe.”

She looked toward the window.

“The people who shot at us know where I live.”

“Exactly.”

“I won't hide.”

“You're not hiding.”

I handed her my phone.

“You're going to call the police and tell them everything.”

She stared at me.

“Everything?”

“Everything.”

She nodded.

Then she whispered:

“Be careful.”

I walked toward the door.

“Daniel.”

I stopped.

My mother looked at me.

“There is something your grandfather told me about Vault 714.”

“What?”

“Never open it alone.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because he said the vault doesn't contain money.”

I stared at her.

“Then what does it contain?”

She swallowed.

“Proof.”

The hospital was surrounded by police by the time I arrived.

Two officers met me in the lobby.

“Mr. Carter?”

“Yes.”

“We've increased security.”

“Who took the photograph?”

“We're checking cameras.”

“Did anyone enter my wife's room?”

“Not according to the visitor log.”

“That means nothing.”

The officer looked at me.

“We know.”

We took the elevator upstairs.

Emily was awake.

The moment she saw me, she knew something was wrong.

“What happened?”

I walked to her bed.

“Someone photographed you while you were sleeping.”

Her face went pale.

“What?”

“I've increased security.”

“Daniel…”

“Don't worry.”

She grabbed my hand.

“Where's your mother?”

“She went to speak with police.”

Emily exhaled.

“Good.”

I looked at her.

“You knew something.”

She looked away.

“What?”

“About my grandfather.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know everything.”

“Tell me what you know.”

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your grandfather contacted me before we married.”

I stared.

“What?”

“He came to my apartment.”

“Why?”

“He wanted to know whether I loved you.”

I almost smiled.

“That sounds like him.”

Emily didn't smile.

“He asked me whether I would protect you.”

I frowned.

“Protect me from what?”

“Your family.”

The smile disappeared.

“What did he tell you?”

“That your father had spent years trying to find something.”

“The second trust.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“The person behind it.”

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

Emily looked toward the door.

“Your grandfather believed someone was manipulating your father.”

“Who?”

“He never told me.”

“Then why did he trust you?”

“Because I wasn't part of your family.”

She reached beneath the pillow.

Pulled out another envelope.

I stared.

“How many secrets did you bring into this marriage?”

She gave me a sad smile.

“More than I wanted.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

My grandfather's handwriting again.

Emily,

If Daniel ever comes to you asking about Vault 714, tell him the truth.

But do not let him open it until he understands why it was created.

I looked at Emily.

“Why was it created?”

She whispered:

“To expose the person who betrayed him.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

I turned the page.

There was another line.

The traitor is not the person Daniel fears.

I stared at it.

Then another sentence:

The traitor is the person he trusts most.

My stomach tightened.

I thought about my family.

My father.

My mother.

Chloe.

Then someone else.

My best friend.

Ryan Mercer.

He had been beside me since college.

He was the chief operating officer of Carter Holdings.

He knew my grandfather.

He knew the family finances.

He had access to the company's legal systems.

And he knew about the trust.

I stood.

Emily noticed.

“What?”

“I need to make a call.”

“To Ryan?”

I looked at her.

“How did you know?”

She shook her head.

“I didn't.”

But her expression told me she did.

I called him.

He answered immediately.

“Daniel?”

“Where are you?”

“At the office.”

“Stay there.”

A pause.

“Why?”

“I need you to pull every record concerning the old Carter building.”

Silence.

Then:

“Why?”

“Because I found Vault 714.”

His breathing changed.

Just slightly.

But I heard it.

“Daniel…”

“You know about it.”

“No.”

“Don't lie to me.”

“I don't.”

“Then why did you just stop breathing?”

He said nothing.

I ended the call.

Emily looked at me.

“You don't trust him.”

“Not anymore.”

She reached for my wrist.

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“Your grandfather told me something else.”

I waited.

“He said Ryan wasn't the first traitor.”

“What does that mean?”

“He said the first betrayal happened before you were born.”

I stared at her.

“Who betrayed him?”

She shook her head.

“He never told me.”

I met Ryan at Carter Holdings two hours later.

He was waiting in my office.

The moment I walked in, he stood.

“You scared me.”

“Good.”

His eyebrows lifted.

“What happened?”

“Someone shot at my mother.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“Someone broke into my house.”

“What?”

“Someone photographed Emily inside the hospital.”

Ryan stared at me.

“Daniel, that's insane.”

“Yes.”

I walked toward my desk.

“So let's talk about Vault 714.”

His face went blank.

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

“You do.”

“No.”

“Then tell me why your computer accessed the old property records yesterday.”

He froze.

I placed a printed report on the desk.

His login.

His password.

His access time.

2:16 a.m.

The day before Chloe attacked Emily.

Ryan stared at the document.

“I can explain.”

“Do it.”

He sat down.

“I was investigating.”

“For whom?”

“For you.”

“Without telling me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“Because I knew your father was moving money.”

I stared.

“How much?”

“More than forty million.”

My jaw tightened.

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“You were looking for the second trust.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked at me.

“Because I thought someone was going to steal it.”

“Who?”

“Your father.”

I didn't answer.

Ryan continued.

“I found transactions between your father and Alexander Vane.”

“How many?”

“Dozens.”

“For what?”

“Loans.”

“That's what James said.”

Ryan looked at me.

“James?”

“You know him?”

He hesitated.

“I've met him.”

“Where?”

“Years ago.”

“Before he disappeared?”

“Yes.”

I stepped closer.

“Ryan.”

He looked up.

“What?”

“Are you working with my father?”

“No.”

“Are you working with Alexander Vane?”

“No.”

“Then tell me why your credentials were used to access Vault 714.”

His face went pale.

“My credentials weren't used.”

I turned the monitor toward him.

The access record was on screen.

Ryan stared.

“That isn't me.”

“It has your username.”

“Someone cloned my credentials.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?”

He didn't answer.

I reached for the phone.

Ryan stood.

“Don't.”

“Who is calling?”

He looked at me.

“Your father.”

I stared.

“Put it on speaker.”

Ryan hesitated.

Then answered.

My father's voice filled the room.

“Ryan.”

I felt my blood run cold.

My father continued:

“Did Daniel find the vault?”

Ryan looked at me.

I said nothing.

My father laughed softly.

“Then I suppose we don't have much time.”

I grabbed the phone.

“You're done.”

My father went silent.

Then:

“You have no idea what you've just opened.”

“What did you do to Grandpa?”

Silence.

“What did you do?”

My father finally answered.

“I didn't kill him.”

“I know.”

“You don't know anything.”

“Then tell me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if you open Vault 714, you'll learn what your grandfather did to your mother.”

I froze.

“My mother?”

My father hung up.

Ryan stared at me.

I slowly turned toward him.

“What did he mean?”

Ryan didn't answer.

“Ryan.”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“No.”

“Then why are you shaking?”

He looked at me.

“Because I know where Vault 714 is.”

My heart stopped.

“Where?”

Ryan swallowed.

“Under the old Carter building.”

“I know that.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You don't understand.”

He opened a drawer.

Pulled out an old architectural blueprint.

The building had been demolished.

But beneath it—

there was a hidden underground level.

Seven floors below the surface.

At the center was a steel room.

VAULT 714.

Ryan pointed at it.

“There is one entrance.”

“Where?”

He looked at me.

“Inside Carter Holdings.”

I stared.

“Where?”

“Your father's private office.”

We entered my father's office after midnight.

Ryan disabled the security system.

I opened the hidden panel behind the bookshelf.

A steel door appeared.

My grandfather's initials were engraved above it.

S.C.

I inserted the brass key.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Inside was a staircase.

We descended.

One floor.

Two.

Three.

The air became colder.

Five.

Six.

Seven.

At the bottom was a corridor.

At the end stood a steel door.

No keypad.

No lock.

Only a fingerprint scanner.

Ryan stared.

“Whose fingerprint?”

I didn't know.

Then I noticed a small screen.

It displayed:

BENEFICIARY REQUIRED.

I placed my hand against it.

Nothing happened.

Then a message appeared.

BENEFICIARY NOT YET BORN.

I stepped back.

Ryan whispered:

“That's impossible.”

The screen changed.

SECONDARY AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Then another message:

MOTHER OF BENEFICIARY.

I stared at Ryan.

“Emily.”

I returned to the hospital.

Emily was awake.

I told her everything.

She listened silently.

Then she removed her hospital bracelet.

“Let's go.”

“You can't.”

“I can walk.”

“Emily.”

She looked at me.

“Daniel, that vault was created for our son.”

I shook my head.

“Your contractions—”

“I'll be careful.”

The doctor refused at first.

Then, after monitoring her for thirty minutes, allowed her to leave under strict conditions.

We returned to Carter Holdings.

The elevator descended.

Emily placed her hand against the scanner.

The steel door opened.

Inside was a single room.

No gold.

No cash.

No jewelry.

Just boxes.

Hundreds of them.

Each marked with a date.

Emily walked toward the center.

There was one box.

DANIEL CARTER — DO NOT OPEN UNTIL FIRST CHILD IS IN DANGER.

I opened it.

Inside was a video recorder.

A key.

A photograph.

And one document.

The document contained a name.

ALEXANDER VANE.

I looked at Emily.

“That's the man who has been following us.”

She nodded.

The recorder suddenly activated.

My grandfather appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

Terrified.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel.”

I stopped breathing.

“If you're watching this, then the family war has already begun.”

He paused.

“The person you call your father is not the architect.”

My blood ran cold.

“He is only a piece.”

My grandfather leaned closer to the camera.

“The real architect is someone you have known your entire life.”

The recording stopped.

The lights went out.

Then a voice came from behind us.

“Your grandfather was always too dramatic.”

I turned.

Ryan stood in the doorway.

Holding a gun.

I stared at my best friend.

“Ryan…”

His face was expressionless.

Emily grabbed my arm.

Ryan looked at her stomach.

Then at me.

“I'm sorry.”

I couldn't speak.

May you like

He slowly closed the vault door behind him.

And locked it.
