Chapter 18 - The Family Trial

The second child was alive.
That was the only thought in my mind.
Another heir.
Another secret.
Another person Vane had spent years searching for.
Ryan stared at the screen.
“Who is he?”
Nobody answered.
I looked at David.
“You know.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“You worked for Grandpa.”
“Yes.”
“You must know.”
“I thought he was dead.”
Elena stepped forward.
“Who is he?”
David looked at her.
“Your second child.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
Ryan stared at her.
“Mom?”
She shook her head.
“I only had one.”
David opened the file.
“According to the records, you gave birth to twins.”
Silence.
Emily whispered:
“Twins?”
Elena began trembling.
“No.”
David nodded.
“Two boys.”
Ryan stepped backward.
“Where is my brother?”
David looked at the photograph.
“That's what Vane has been trying to find.”
I stared.
“So Ryan isn't the only heir.”
“No.”
“Then why did Grandpa hide the second child?”
David answered:
“Because the second boy was born with a condition that made him medically vulnerable.”
“What condition?”
“He needed immediate treatment.”
“Where was he taken?”
“A private medical facility.”
“Which one?”
David hesitated.
“Blackstone Meridian.”
My blood ran cold.
“They had him?”
“For a short time.”
“What happened?”
“He disappeared.”
Elena's face collapsed.
“You told me my baby died.”
David looked at her.
“I believed he had.”
Ryan stepped closer.
“Mom.”
She turned toward him.
“I lost another son?”
“Yes.”
Ryan's eyes filled with tears.
“Then we find him.”
I looked at James.
“Can the drive tell us where?”
“Maybe.”
He searched the files.
Then stopped.
“There's a location.”
“Where?”
“Chicago.”
I stared.
“Chicago?”
“Yes.”
A file appeared.
SUBJECT: DANIEL VALE
CURRENT STATUS: UNKNOWN
LAST VERIFIED LOCATION: CHICAGO
I felt something strange.
The name.
Daniel Vale.
My name.
Ryan looked at me.
“That's why you were named Daniel.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Elena looked at me.
“No.”
James whispered:
“Your grandfather named both boys Daniel.”
I stared.
Two boys.
Both named Daniel.
One became Ryan.
The other had disappeared.
But why?
Then another file opened.
DNA MATCH — 99.99%
The comparison was between Ryan and a man living in Chicago.
I stared.
“He's alive.”
James nodded.
“Your brother is alive.”
The police arrived minutes later.
Vane was gone.
But his network was collapsing.
The files from the drive were copied and secured.
Federal investigators began arriving.
Blackstone Meridian accounts were frozen.
Carter Holdings stock trading was suspended.
And for the first time in twenty-three years, Vane was running.
But we had one more problem.
The original trust.
The $40 million trust.
The fifty percent voting control.
The hidden assets.
They all required legal activation.
James looked at me.
“We have to go to court.”
“When?”
“Tomorrow.”
“That fast?”
“The evidence is too significant.”
Ryan nodded.
“I'll testify.”
Elena stepped forward.
“So will I.”
Michael, lying in a hospital bed under police guard, agreed to testify.
Even Chloe agreed.
The trial became national news.
For days, the country watched the Carter family collapse.
Financial crimes.
Fraud.
Illegal trusts.
Kidnapping.
Attempted murder.
Money laundering.
Twenty-three years of hidden records.
The courtroom was packed.
Vane was finally arrested three states away.
He was brought into court in handcuffs.
He looked at me.
“You think you won?”
I stared at him.
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“You haven't met your brother.”
My blood froze.
“What?”
He leaned closer.
“He isn't missing.”
I stared.
“Where is he?”
Vane smiled.
“Ask your father.”
I turned toward Michael.
My father looked terrified.
“Dad?”
He didn't answer.
The judge entered.
Everyone stood.
The trial began.
The prosecution called Chloe first.
She described the $12 million trust.
The attack on Emily.
The pressure to sign.
The fourteen-million-dollar debt.
Then she broke down.
“I thought money would fix my life.”
The prosecutor asked:
“Did it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Chloe looked at me.
“Because I destroyed the people who loved me.”
The courtroom went silent.
Then came my mother.
Margaret testified for four hours.
She admitted giving Vane Elena's location.
She admitted knowing about the secret trusts.
She admitted hiding information from me.
But she also revealed the recordings she had secretly made while infiltrating Vane's network.
Those recordings became the prosecution's strongest evidence.
Then came Thomas.
He testified about Ryan.
About the night he took the newborn from St. Agnes.
About hiding him.
About receiving orders from Samuel.
And finally—
Michael.
My father entered the courtroom in a wheelchair.
He looked older than ever.
The judge asked:
“Mr. Carter, do you understand that your testimony may incriminate you?”
“Yes.”
“Do you still wish to testify?”
“Yes.”
Michael looked toward me.
“I owe my son the truth.”
He described Samuel's death.
Vane's manipulation.
The stolen money.
The hidden network.
Then he revealed something nobody expected.
“I didn't kill Samuel.”
The courtroom erupted.
I stared.
“What?”
Michael continued.
“I pushed him.”
“Yes.
“But he was alive.”
The prosecutor stepped closer.
“Who killed him?”
Michael closed his eyes.
“Richard Vale.”
Elena gasped.
Her adoptive father.
Michael continued.
“He entered the room after I left.”
“Why?”
“To silence Samuel.”
“Do you have proof?”
Michael nodded.
“The final evidence.”
He looked at James.
James stood.
“The recording.”
A video appeared.
Samuel was alive.
Richard Vale stood behind him.
Alexander Vane stood beside Richard.
And then—
Richard raised a gun.
Samuel looked at the camera.
“If I die, they will blame Michael.”
The gun fired.
The courtroom fell silent.
Michael began crying.
“I lived with that guilt for twenty-three years.”
I looked at him.
“You should have told me.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“That you would hate me.”
I stared at him.
“I hated the lie.”
He looked at me.
“But I never stopped being your father.”
I walked toward him.
Then I hugged him.
For the first time in twenty-three years, I forgave him.
Not for killing Samuel.
He hadn't.
Not for being my biological father.
He wasn't.
But for finally telling me the truth.
After the trial, Vane was convicted on multiple charges.
Richard Vale was extradited and charged with Samuel's murder.
Chloe received a reduced sentence for cooperating.
Margaret was granted immunity for her cooperation.
Thomas was reunited with Ryan.
And Elena finally got her family back.
But the mystery of the second child remained.
The DNA match pointed to Chicago.
The name:
Daniel Vale.
We flew there two weeks later.
Ryan sat beside me on the plane.
“You nervous?”
“Yes.”
“Me too.”
“What if he doesn't want us?”
Ryan looked out the window.
“He deserves the choice.”
We arrived at a small neighborhood outside downtown.
The address led to a modest house.
I knocked.
No answer.
I knocked again.
The door opened.
A man stood there.
Late twenties.
Dark hair.
Green eyes.
A faint crescent-shaped birthmark on his wrist.
Ryan stopped breathing.
The man stared at him.
Neither spoke.
Then the man whispered:
“Ryan?”
Ryan began crying.
“How do you know me?”
The stranger looked at me.
“I've been waiting for you.”
I felt my heart stop.
“Who are you?”
He smiled sadly.
“My name is Daniel.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“My brother.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Then he looked past us.
At Elena.
His mother.
She stood frozen on the sidewalk.
Daniel's face changed.
“Mom?”
Elena broke down.
She ran to him.
The family reunion lasted only seconds.
Because Daniel suddenly pulled away.
He looked terrified.
“There's something you need to know.”
“What?”
He looked directly at me.
“Vane didn't lose.”
I frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Daniel reached inside his jacket.
Pulled out a photograph.
The photograph showed a man standing beside Alexander Vane.
I recognized him immediately.
My blood froze.
It was someone we had trusted.
Someone who had been with us through everything.
Someone who had access to every document.
Every trust.
Every location.
Every secret.
Daniel whispered:
“The enemy was never outside your family.”
He handed me the photograph.
“He was already inside.”
May you like
I looked at the face.
And realized the final betrayal had not yet been revealed.
