Chapter 8 - THE ARMORED CONVOY

Karen, Nathan and Rebecca followed Patricia’s transport in an unmarked police vehicle.
Lily remained at Hale Meridian Tower with officers Karen trusted.
The convoy moved toward the federal detention center.
The black truck stayed two vehicles behind.
Karen called the transport commander.
“There is a vehicle following you.”
“We see it.”
“Julian Voss may be inside.”
“We have air support on the way.”
The black truck suddenly accelerated.
Its front bumper struck the rear of the armored transport.
Police vehicles moved to intercept it.
The truck swerved between them.
A side panel opened.
A magnetic device launched onto the transport’s rear doors.
Nathan recognized it.
“Explosive breach charge.”
The commander attempted to pull over.
Karen’s vehicle moved alongside.
“Patricia!” Karen shouted through the open window.
The explosion tore the rear doors away.
The transport spun across the road.
Patricia’s guards were thrown against the interior.
The black truck stopped beside it.
Masked men jumped out.
Nathan exited before Karen could stop him.
He fired toward the attackers.
Police returned fire from behind damaged vehicles.
Karen reached the transport.
Patricia was trapped beneath a metal bench.
One guard lay unconscious beside her.
“Help me,” Patricia said.
Karen hesitated.
This woman had endangered Lily, murdered Nathan’s mother and built Julian into a weapon.
“Karen!”
She pulled the metal frame away.
Patricia crawled toward the open doors.
A masked man appeared outside.
Karen grabbed the fallen guard’s weapon and fired into the road near his feet.
He retreated.
Nathan helped them into cover.
“Where is Julian?” Karen demanded.
Patricia looked toward the black truck.
“He is not here.”
“Then who attacked you?”
“The Circle.”
“You lead the Circle.”
“I led one division.”
Patricia explained that the network was governed by five regional directors.
Her arrest made her expendable.
The attackers were sent to eliminate her before she testified.
Julian had warned Karen not because he planned the attack, but because he intercepted the order.
The gunfire stopped abruptly.
The surviving attackers retreated.
Police helicopters appeared overhead.
Patricia was transferred to another vehicle.
Before leaving, she grabbed Karen’s sleeve.
“Julian will go to the original archive.”
“Where?”
“Beneath your father’s first house.”
Karen knew the property.
The Hale farmhouse had stood empty for decades.
Robert refused to sell it but never explained why.
They returned to the city.
Lily was safe, but the emergency custody case remained unresolved.
Julian still controlled corporate resources.
Patricia’s capture weakened him, but it also freed him from the person who had restrained his worst impulses.
Nathan requested an emergency vote to remove Julian.
The board agreed to meet the following morning.
Karen expected Nathan to demand leadership.
Instead, he nominated Karen.
“You wanted half,” she reminded him.
“I wanted him to admit I existed.”
“Did it help?”
“No.”
Nathan looked toward Lily.
“Nothing they denied us can be repaired by taking something from her.”
Karen began seeing her brother differently.
He was ambitious and wounded.
But unlike Julian, he could still question what his pain entitled him to do.
That night, they traveled to the Hale farmhouse.
The building stood alone amid frozen fields.
Its windows were broken.
Vines covered the porch.
Rebecca found a hidden lever behind the stone fireplace.
A staircase descended into the earth.
The original archive stretched beneath the property.
Rows of metal shelves held decades of files.
Photographs documented politicians, business leaders and judges.
Audio tapes contained private conversations.
Bank ledgers recorded payments dating back to Karen’s grandfather.
“This could destroy thousands of people,” Nathan said.
“It could free thousands more,” Rebecca replied.
They found Julian inside the central records room.
He stood before an industrial furnace.
Boxes burned behind him.
“You are destroying the archive,” Karen said.
“I am removing Patricia’s chains.”
“These records belong to victims.”
“These records belong to whoever survives them.”
Nathan raised his weapon.
“Step away from the furnace.”
Julian looked at him.
“My forgotten brother.”
“We are not brothers.”
“We were both recruited through resentment.”
“You stayed loyal to yours.”
Julian laughed.
“You think Karen trusts you?”
“She does not have to.”
“Then why are you here?”
Nathan answered calmly.
“To make sure you lose.”
Julian activated the furnace’s emergency system.
Steel doors locked around them.
Flames began moving through vents along the archive walls.
“He is burning the entire building,” Rebecca said.
Karen saw a black case beside Julian.
The case contained the archive’s digital master copy.
Julian planned to destroy the paper files and escape with the only surviving record.
“Give me the silver drive,” he told Karen.
“In exchange for what?”
“The case.”
“You expect me to trust you?”
“No.”
“I expect you to understand value.”
Karen removed the drive.
Julian stepped closer.
Nathan moved behind him.
Before either man could act, a gunshot struck the ceiling.
Patricia stood at the entrance with two federal guards lying behind her.
She had escaped custody.
Julian stared at her.
“You were supposed to die.”
Patricia aimed at him.
“So were you.”
Fire spread through the archive as mother and chosen son faced each other.
Then Patricia revealed the truth Julian had spent his entire life trying to uncover.

“I did not recruit you because you were special,” she said.
“I recruited you because Robert Hale was your biological father”:
