Chapter 11 - THE CROWN LEDGER
Grant moved Daniel’s bed behind a concrete support wall.
Nathan distributed weapons taken from the facility guards.
Karen refused one until gunfire struck the hallway door.
Then she accepted it.
Lily remained beside Daniel.
After twelve years of captivity, he was too weak to walk.
Yet his mind was clear.
“The trust is not only money,” he explained.
“Robert embedded data fragments inside every financial transfer.”
“When the transactions are combined in the correct order, they reveal the ledger.”
Karen tried to understand.
“How do we access it?”
“The trustee, the beneficiary and one Hale heir must authorize the reconstruction.”
Karen was trustee.
Lily was beneficiary.
Nathan, Julian or Karen could serve as the Hale heir.
Because Karen already served as trustee, the system required another heir.
Nathan had become essential.
Senator Crane spoke through the speakers again.
“You have five minutes.”
Rebecca’s voice suddenly interrupted him through another channel.
“Crane, federal command knows your team is compromised.”
Gunfire intensified outside.
Rebecca had brought loyal agents, but they could not distinguish allies from Circle operatives.
Daniel pointed toward a cabinet.
Inside was an emergency satellite terminal.
Nathan connected the silver drive.
Karen and Lily placed their hands on biometric scanners.
Nathan entered Robert’s family code.
The trust system opened.
Thousands of transaction lines moved across the screen.
Data fragments assembled into names.
Judges.
Governors.
Bankers.
Military contractors.
Media executives.
The Circle was larger than anyone expected.
A file marked ACTIVE OPERATIONS listed a plan scheduled for that afternoon.
OPERATION EMPTY THRONE.
Its goal was to destroy Hale Meridian’s stock value, blame Karen for financial crimes and transfer company assets to Circle-controlled funds.
The operation included Karen’s assassination.
Lily would become a ward of the state.
Nathan would be framed for the murder.
Julian would die in prison before trial.
“They planned to erase every heir,” Nathan said.
Daniel looked toward the screen.
“Robert always believed the Circle wanted the company.”
“They want the network beneath it,” Karen answered.
The Crown Ledger completed its reconstruction.
A security option appeared.
PUBLISH.
Daniel warned them not to press it immediately.
Public release would expose innocent relatives and undercover witnesses.
They needed to send the evidence to several independent authorities first.
The hallway door exploded inward.
Circle agents entered.
Grant fired from behind a medical cabinet.
Nathan pulled Lily toward the rear exit.
Karen and Daniel remained near the terminal.
A masked agent approached them.
Karen recognized the man’s eyes.
Hale Meridian’s chief financial officer, Marcus Bell.
He had worked with Karen for fifteen years.
“You were part of this,” she said.
“I protected the company.”
“You planned to kill me.”
“I planned to prevent chaos.”
He aimed at Daniel.
Daniel threw the satellite terminal at him.
Karen fired.
The bullet struck Marcus in the shoulder.
Grant disarmed him.
Rebecca’s loyal agents reached the ward minutes later.
Senator Crane escaped in a helicopter.
The facility was secured.
Daniel was transported to a protected hospital.
Karen stayed beside him while Lily slept in a chair.
“You could have tried to contact me,” Karen said.
“I did.”
“Julian intercepted every message.”
“Why did he keep you alive?”
“He wanted the ledger.”
“Why not torture you until you gave it to him?”
Daniel looked toward Lily.
“Because I convinced him that only Lily could access it after turning eighteen.”
“She is fourteen.”
“I needed time.”
Karen struggled with anger.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I thought Robert would protect you.”
“He was dead within five years.”
“I know.”
“Did Julian tell you?”
“He brought me photographs from the funeral.”
Karen looked away.
Julian had visited Daniel in captivity while pretending to comfort Karen.
The cruelty was almost impossible to comprehend.
“What did Julian want besides the ledger?”
“To know whether Robert regretted abandoning him.”
“What did you say?”
“I told him Robert regretted every child he failed.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“But regret did not make him brave.”
At Hale Meridian Tower, the board gathered for an emergency meeting.
Karen appeared through a secure video connection.
She revealed enough of Operation Empty Throne to stop the asset transfer.
Nathan presented the Crown Ledger’s authentication.
The board voted to suspend every executive linked to the Circle.
For several hours, the plan appeared successful.
Then the stock market opened.
Hale Meridian shares fell sixty percent in twelve minutes.
News outlets reported that Karen had fabricated evidence to seize control.
Documents showed her authorizing illegal transfers.
Her signature appeared on every page.
The Circle had begun Operation Empty Throne early.
Federal agents entered Daniel’s hospital room.
Their leader held an arrest warrant.
“Karen Hale, you are charged with securities fraud, conspiracy and the murder of Marcus Bell.”
Karen looked toward Grant.
Marcus had survived the shooting.
Or he had when they left Vermont.
The agent continued.
“Marcus Bell died thirty minutes ago.”
Someone had finished what Karen started and placed the weapon in her name.
Lily moved in front of her.
“You cannot take her.”
Karen handed Grant the silver drive.
“Keep Lily safe.”
Then she allowed the agents to place her in handcuffs.
As they led her away, Daniel called after her.
“Karen, there is one person the Circle cannot control.”
“Who?”
