Project Lily began before Lily was born.
Robert believed the Circle would eventually target every member of his family.
He created a long-term plan to shape his granddaughter into the ideal trustee.
Private schools were selected for her.
Doctors were paid to monitor her development.
Friends were investigated.
Even Daniel’s role in her life had been evaluated.
Karen read the documents with growing anger.
Robert had not only protected Lily’s future.
He had attempted to design it.
“He treated her like an asset,” Karen said.
Daniel sat across from her.
“He believed planning was love.”
“That is what Julian believed.”
“That is what all of them believed.”
The project’s final phase was scheduled to begin when Lily turned eighteen.
She would be introduced to carefully selected advisers and prepared to control the remaining Hale network.
Most of those advisers had been arrested.
One remained free.
Dr. Helen Ward, Lily’s school counselor.
Karen went directly to the school.
Helen’s office was empty.
Files had been removed.
Security footage showed her leaving with two suitcases hours after Julian’s sentencing.
Lily remembered many private sessions in which Helen asked about her relationship with Karen.
“She wanted to know whether you ever made decisions without asking me,” Lily said.
“What did you tell her?”
“That you are my mom.”
“And?”
“That sometimes you worry so much you stop listening.”
Karen accepted the criticism.
Helen had not invented every weakness.
She had studied real ones.
Project Lily included contingency instructions.
If Karen became too controlling, advisers were to create conflict between mother and daughter.
If Lily rejected Hale Meridian, they were to engineer a financial crisis that made her feel responsible for saving it.
The approaching crisis was already underway.
Several employee pension accounts had been frozen.

“They are forcing me to take control,” Lily said.
Karen looked at the system.
“If you authorize it, Project Lily recognizes you as permanent trustee.”
“And if I refuse?”
“People lose their pensions.”
The trap resembled everything the Hale family had created.

Lily wanted to approve the transfer.
Karen stopped her.
“There has to be another way.”

The words were harsh but true.

Nathan, recovering at home, offered his help.

Karen hesitated.

“I want to.”

“No.”
Nathan signed an agreement surrendering all future Hale voting rights after the pension transfer.
He placed his personal assets as collateral.
The plan worked.

Nathan glanced toward Karen.

Karen took his hand.
She did not pretend all harm had disappeared.

But unlike Robert, she refused to confuse imperfection with a reason to abandon someone.
Helen Ward was arrested at an airport in Iceland.

Most were dismantled.

Karen resigned as interim chief executive.

“Yes.”
