Chapter 12 - THE MAN IN CELL 417

Karen was held in a federal detention center under constant observation.
The prosecutor handling her case was one of the names in the Crown Ledger.
Every request made by Evelyn was denied.
Bail was considered a national security risk.
Evidence disappeared before her attorneys could examine it.
The Circle had designed a legal cage more effective than Julian’s mansion.
On the third night, a guard entered Karen’s cell.
“You have a visitor.”
The visitor sat behind reinforced glass.
Julian wore an orange prison uniform.
A bruise darkened one side of his face.
Karen remained standing.
“Daniel said the Circle cannot control you.”
Julian smiled faintly.
“Daniel always understood my defects.”
“Did you know he was alive?”
“Yes.”
“For twelve years?”
“Yes.”
Karen picked up the communication receiver.
Her voice remained calm.
“I could kill you.”
“I know.”
“You watched me bury an empty coffin.”
“Yes.”
“You stood beside Lily while she cried for her father.”
“I did.”
“Why keep him alive?”
“At first, Patricia ordered it.”
“And later?”
“I needed the ledger.”
“You also wanted him to answer questions about Robert.”
Julian looked away.
Karen understood.
Beneath the ambition and cruelty, he remained the abandoned child Robert refused to claim.
It did not excuse him.
But it explained why Daniel survived.
“The Circle plans to kill you,” Karen said.
“They have tried twice.”
“Help us expose them.”
“What do I receive?”
“The opportunity to remain alive.”
“Temporary.”
“It is more than you offered Daniel.”
Julian touched the bruise on his face.
“The Circle keeps its emergency financial records in an offshore clearinghouse.”
“The Crown Ledger does not include account access.”
“I have it.”
“Where?”
“In the phone you broke.”
Karen stared at him.
“The phone was destroyed.”
“The biometric chip survived.”
She had kept the fragments.
Some were with the police as evidence.
One remained hidden inside the lining of her coat, now stored in detention property.
Julian explained that the chip contained access to a dormant account tracking every Circle payment.
It could prove the documents against Karen were fabricated.
“Why did you keep that evidence?” she asked.
“Insurance.”
“Why not use it before your arrest?”
“Patricia knew I possessed it.”
“She would have exposed your paternity.”
Julian’s expression tightened.
“She had more than that.”
“What?”
“She had proof that I ordered the final action against Robert.”
Karen’s heartbeat changed.
“What final action?”
“My father’s car did not go over the cliff because of the Circle.”
Julian met her eyes.
“I ordered the mechanic to damage the brakes.”
Karen gripped the receiver.
“You killed him.”
“He destroyed my mother.”
“Elena?”
“She spent her life waiting for Robert to return.”
“Robert was a coward.”
“He was more than that.”
Julian claimed Robert arranged for Elena to be confined in a private psychiatric institution when she threatened to reveal Julian.
She died there after years of forced treatment.
Julian blamed Robert completely.
“So you murdered him,” Karen said.
“I gave him the fear he gave everyone else.”
“And then you married me.”
“I planned to take the company.”
“Did you ever love me?”
Julian was silent.
Karen wanted him to say no.
It would make every memory easier to discard.
Instead, he said, “Not enough to stop.”
The answer hurt more.
Julian gave her the account’s access phrase.
He wanted protection from the Circle and a chance to testify.
Karen promised neither.
She only promised to deliver the evidence.
Back in her cell, she requested her coat.
The guards refused.
Karen began shouting that the coat contained medication.
A nurse retrieved it.
Karen secretly removed the chip and hid it beneath her tongue.
During a meeting with Evelyn, she transferred it beneath a legal document.
Evelyn brought the chip to Nathan.
Within hours, they accessed the Circle’s clearinghouse.
The accounts proved that Marcus Bell had been paid by Senator Crane.
They also showed a second payment made after Marcus’s death.
Recipient: SPECIAL AGENT PAUL DREYER.
Dreyer was the man leading Karen’s prosecution.
Rebecca contacted the attorney general.
Dreyer was arrested while attempting to leave the country.
Karen’s charges were not immediately dismissed, but the case began collapsing.
The judge ordered a new evidentiary hearing.
Karen was transferred to a courthouse holding room.
Julian was brought from prison to testify.
Their vehicles entered the underground garage minutes apart.
The lights went out.
Gunfire erupted.
Circle agents disguised as marshals attacked the convoy.
Karen’s guards fell.
A man opened her cell and raised his weapon.
Julian struck him from behind with a chain attached to his restraints.
“Move,” he ordered.
Karen followed him into a service tunnel.
“You could have escaped alone.”
“I still need the ledger.”
“You never change.”
“Neither do you.”
At the end of the tunnel, they found an emergency exit.
Julian stopped.
“You go left.”
“Where are you going?”
“Right.”
“Why?”
“Because they will follow me.”
Karen understood.
He was offering himself as a distraction.
“Julian.”
He looked back.
“Tell Lily…”
His voice failed.
Karen waited.
“Tell her obedience was never the lesson.”
Then he ran toward the gunfire.
Karen escaped into the courthouse basement.
Police secured the building twenty minutes later.
Three attackers were dead.
Julian was missing.
Blood covered the tunnel floor, but no body was found.
The following morning, Karen’s charges were dismissed.
A package arrived at Rebecca’s apartment.
Inside was Julian’s prison identification card and a map marked with a red circle.
The location was an island owned by Senator Crane.
