Chapter 4 - THE AUNT WHO DISAPPEARED

Judge Rebecca Hale ordered the officers to leave Lily in Karen’s temporary custody until the emergency hearing.
The police were not pleased, but the document carried the signature of the state’s chief family court judge.
Once the shelter doors closed, Karen faced the woman she had believed was dead.
Rebecca was nearly seventy.
Her silver hair was pinned tightly behind her head, and she carried herself with the controlled authority of someone accustomed to immediate obedience.
“You are my father’s sister.”
“Yes.”
“He told me you died in Europe.”
“That was safer than telling you the truth.”
Karen gave a bitter laugh.
“Everyone in this family seems to have survived by lying to me.”
Rebecca did not defend herself.
“That is fair.”
“Why did you disappear?”
“Because I discovered what Robert was building.”
Evelyn looked uncomfortable.
Rebecca noticed.
“You still haven’t told her everything.”
“I told her about the trust.”
“Not the reason it exists.”
Karen folded her arms.
“Then you tell me.”
Rebecca explained that Hale Meridian’s wealth did not begin with real estate and technology.
The original fortune came from private intelligence work conducted for corporations, political campaigns and foreign governments.
Robert inherited a hidden network of informants, financial accounts and surveillance operations.
He tried to dismantle the network when Karen was young.
Powerful people resisted.
Rebecca, then a federal prosecutor, gathered evidence against several of them.
Before she could present it, her apartment was bombed.
Robert helped fake her death.
“He told me it was the only way to protect you,” Rebecca said.
“So you abandoned your career and your family?”
“I entered the federal witness system.”
“Then why are you a judge?”
“I returned under my married name.”
Karen looked at the surname on the order.
Rebecca Hale had reclaimed her original name only after Robert died.
Julian apparently never connected the respected judge to Karen’s family.
Rebecca had spent years watching Julian from a distance.
“Why didn’t you help me sooner?” Karen asked.
“Because every message I sent disappeared.”
“You could have come to me.”
“Julian had you surrounded.”
“I was not a prisoner.”
Rebecca looked toward Lily.
“Weren’t you?”
The question silenced Karen.
They left the shelter through a rear entrance and traveled to the courthouse.
Crowds surrounded the front steps.
Some held signs supporting Julian.
Others accused Hale Meridian of hiding a family scandal.
News helicopters circled overhead.
Rebecca could not preside over the hearing because of their relationship, but she could ensure proper procedure.
The assigned judge was Franklin Moore.
Evelyn whispered that Moore had attended several Hale Meridian charity events with Julian.
The hearing began in a closed courtroom.
Julian entered with six attorneys.
He looked calm and wounded.
A bandage crossed his left hand where the broken phone had cut him.
Karen sat beside Lily.
Grant waited outside as a witness.
Julian’s lead attorney presented the DNA report.
He argued that Julian was Lily’s biological father and that Karen had concealed paternity.
He described Karen as unstable, violent and financially desperate.
Then he displayed photographs of the shattered phone.
“Mrs. Voss destroyed property, threatened her husband and removed the child from her legal home.”
Karen’s attorney, Evelyn, stood.
“Julian Voss has never been listed as Lily’s father.”
“That omission resulted from deception.”
“Mr. Voss met Karen eleven years after Lily’s birth.”
“That is the story Mrs. Voss created.”
Julian took the witness stand.
He claimed he had known Karen briefly during her recovery from the car accident.
According to him, Karen became pregnant after their secret relationship but chose Daniel for financial security.
Karen wanted to strike him.
Instead, she listened.
Julian described himself as a rejected father who remained silent to protect Lily.
He claimed he married Karen years later because he still loved her.
His performance was careful.
He allowed his voice to break only once.
Several observers believed him.
Evelyn approached the witness stand.
“Where did you meet Karen fourteen years ago?”
“At the Bellmont Rehabilitation Center.”
“What room was she in?”
“Room 312.”
“What doctor treated her?”
“Dr. Malcolm Trent.”
Evelyn produced hospital records.
Karen had been in room 214.
Dr. Trent had never worked at Bellmont.
Julian recovered quickly.
“Time can affect memory.”
“Especially when a person is inventing it.”
The judge warned Evelyn.
She presented the trust clause.
If Julian abused Lily, his management authority over Hale Meridian could be suspended.
Grant testified.
He described the mark on Lily’s wrist and the leather strap in Julian’s hand.
Julian’s attorney attacked him as a disgruntled former employee.
Then Lily requested to speak.
The judge hesitated but allowed it.
She sat in a chair beside the bench.
Julian looked at her with calculated sadness.
Lily did not look away.
“He told me I had to obey him.”
“What happened when you refused?” the judge asked.
“He grabbed my wrist.”
“Did he strike you?”
“No.”
Karen held her breath.
Lily continued.
“He raised the strap, but Mom came in before he used it.”
Julian’s attorney stood.
“So your mother never actually saw Mr. Voss strike you.”
“She saw enough.”
The DNA test ordered by Rebecca’s physician arrived during a recess.
Evelyn opened the sealed results.
Julian was not Lily’s biological father.
Daniel Price was.
The original report had been falsified.
Judge Moore stared at Julian.
“Do you wish to explain this?”
Julian’s attorneys requested time to investigate.
The judge denied Julian’s custody claim and granted Karen temporary protective orders.
The courtroom erupted in whispers.
Karen thought they had won.
Then Julian’s lead attorney presented a second document.
A signed psychiatric evaluation declared Karen incapable of managing the Hale Meridian trust.
It recommended that authority transfer to the nearest competent family member.
Rebecca stood.
“There is no other family member with priority.”
Julian smiled.
“That is not true.”
The courtroom doors opened.
A young man in an expensive gray suit entered.
Karen recognized her father’s eyes immediately.
He introduced himself to the court as Nathan Hale.
Robert Hale’s son.
Karen’s older brother.

Nathan looked at Karen with no warmth at all.
“I am here to take control of my father’s company”:
