Chapter 13 - CRANE ISLAND

Senator Crane’s island lay twenty miles off the coast of Maine.
Officially, it contained a private vacation estate.
Satellite images revealed communications towers, an underground bunker and a landing strip large enough for military aircraft.
The Circle was gathering there.
Nathan believed Julian had allowed himself to be taken.
Karen believed he was planning something worse.
Daniel was still recovering, but he insisted on helping.
He identified the island as the location where Robert once attended Circle meetings.
“This is where the regional directors vote,” Daniel said.
“If Crane called everyone together, they are deciding how to survive the ledger.”
Rebecca obtained limited federal authorization for surveillance, but not an immediate assault.
Several officials named in the Crown Ledger argued that the evidence was fabricated.
Karen had no intention of waiting.
Grant recruited four former security officers whose families had been threatened by the Circle.
Evelyn arranged a fishing vessel.
Lily remained with Daniel at a protected house.
Before Karen left, Lily handed her Robert’s recorder.
“Bring Julian back.”
Karen looked at her.
“Why?”
“He saved you.”
“He also hurt you.”
“I know.”
Lily struggled to find the words.
“I do not forgive him.”
“But I want him to stand in court and hear what he did.”
Karen understood.
Death would allow Julian to become another tragic Hale family secret.
Accountability required survival.
They approached Crane Island during a storm.
Waves struck the vessel hard enough to throw equipment across the deck.
Grant guided them toward a service dock hidden between cliffs.
Security cameras had been disabled.
Julian had arrived before them.
Inside the island’s tunnels, they found two unconscious guards.
Neither had been killed.
“That is unusual restraint for him,” Nathan said.
“Maybe he wants witnesses,” Karen replied.
They reached the central bunker.
A meeting was underway behind reinforced doors.
Crane spoke to four regional directors.
Patricia sat at the far end of the table wearing a tracking bracelet.
She had apparently made another deal for temporary freedom.
Julian stood beside Crane with his hands bound.
Crane accused him of exposing the Circle through personal weakness.
“You allowed a woman and a child to disrupt fifty years of work.”
Julian looked toward Patricia.
“She trained me to underestimate them.”
Crane ordered Julian executed after revealing the ledger’s remaining encryption.
Julian refused.
Patricia stood.
“He does not know it.”
“You told us he did.”
“I told you what would bring him here.”
Patricia had betrayed the Circle.
Or perhaps she had betrayed Julian again.
Karen connected Robert’s recorder to the bunker’s communication system.
Every word inside began transmitting to Rebecca and federal command.
Grant disabled the outer alarms.
Nathan opened the bunker door using a code found in Caroline’s files.
Karen entered first.
Crane stared at her.
“The chosen daughter.”
“You keep using family wounds to recruit people.”
“Wounds create loyalty.”
“No.”
“They create desperate people who mistake control for safety.”
Crane raised a gun.
Julian drove his shoulder into him.
The weapon fired into the ceiling.
Grant and Nathan entered.
The regional directors reached for concealed weapons.
Federal agents stormed the island’s landing strip above.
The bunker became chaos.
Karen freed Julian.
He picked up Crane’s gun.
For one dangerous second, he aimed it at Patricia.
She did not move.
“You turned me into this,” he said.
“I gave you opportunities.”
“You gave me targets.”
“You chose what to do with them.”
Julian’s hand trembled.
Karen stepped between them.
“She is right about one thing.”
He looked at her.
“You chose.”
Patricia’s expression showed triumph.
Karen continued.
“And now you can choose again.”
Julian lowered the gun.
Patricia’s smile disappeared.
Crane crawled toward an emergency console.
Lily’s voice came through Robert’s recorder.
“Mom, the island is rigged.”
Daniel had found old construction plans.
Explosives had been installed beneath the bunker.
Crane struck the detonation switch.
Nothing happened.
Julian smiled.
“I disconnected it before the meeting.”
Crane stared at him.
Julian moved closer.
“You taught me insurance.”
Federal agents entered the bunker.
Crane and the regional directors were arrested.
Patricia was returned to custody.
Julian surrendered his weapon.
Karen expected him to ask for leniency.
Instead, he held out his hands.
“I will testify.”
“Why?” she asked.
He looked toward the Circle’s table.
“Because there should be nothing left for Lily to inherit.”
As they prepared to leave, Nathan examined the island’s computer system.
One encrypted transmission had been sent seconds before the raid.
The destination was Hale Meridian Tower.
The message contained an activation code.
Daniel read it over the satellite link.
His face changed.
“What did they activate?” Karen asked.
“Robert’s last defense.”
“What does it do?”
“If the Circle falls, Hale Meridian’s entire financial network automatically transfers to an anonymous trust.”
“Whose trust?”
Daniel looked toward Lily.
“Hers.”
At midnight, every Hale Meridian account disappeared.
More than eleven billion dollars moved beyond government reach.
The public blamed Karen.
The board blamed Nathan.
Federal investigators blamed Julian.

Only Lily possessed the biometric authority to retrieve the money.
And someone had already taken her from Daniel’s safe house:
