Chapter 16 - REBECCA’S CONFESSION

Rebecca asked to speak somewhere private.

Karen refused.

“Lily has heard enough secrets through closed doors.”

Daniel, Grant, Evelyn and Julian joined them in Hale Meridian’s boardroom.

Nathan remained hospitalized.

Rebecca stood at the head of the table where Robert once presided.

“I joined the Circle thirty-seven years ago.”

Karen felt tired rather than surprised.

Every trusted person eventually revealed another hidden allegiance.

“You said they tried to kill you.”

“They did.”

“Why?”

“Because I attempted to change the organization from within.”

Julian laughed softly.

“That is what every Circle member says after losing.”

Rebecca ignored him.

She explained that the network was originally created to prevent companies and governments from using private power without accountability.

Over time, the watchers became rulers.

Rebecca joined believing she could restore the original mission.

Robert joined for the same reason.

Eventually, both became compromised.

“Did you order Caroline Reed’s death?” Nathan asked through a video connection from his hospital room.

“No.”

“Did you know Patricia did?”

“Not until years later.”

“And you remained silent.”

“Yes.”

Nathan ended the connection.

Karen looked at Rebecca.

“You manipulated us toward this restructuring.”

“I believe no family should control Hale Meridian.”

“That does not answer whether you used Lily.”

“I used the trust.”

“She is the trust.”

Rebecca lowered her eyes.

Karen saw genuine shame.

But she had learned that shame after discovery did not erase choice.

“Are you the Circle’s current leader?”

“Technically.”

“Then order every remaining member to surrender.”

“They will not obey.”

“So your title means nothing.”

“It gives me access to their final protocol.”

The Circle had prepared one last defense called Black Winter.

If its leadership collapsed, financial malware would attack major banks, energy grids and medical systems.

Millions of ordinary people would suffer.

The program was scheduled to activate in forty-eight hours unless Rebecca entered a cancellation sequence.

“Then cancel it,” Karen said.

“I only possess half of the sequence.”

“Who has the other half?”

Rebecca looked at Julian.

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Patricia placed it inside your memory conditioning.”

Karen stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

As a young recruit, Julian underwent hypnotic and pharmaceutical conditioning.

Patricia embedded phrases he could recall only under specific stimuli.

The second half of the shutdown code was one of them.

Julian’s face hardened.

“She used my mind as a vault.”

“She knew physical records could be stolen.”

“Can you recover it?” Karen asked.

“Possibly.”

They brought a neuropsychologist who had treated former intelligence operatives.

Julian agreed to the procedure only after Karen promised Lily would not be present.

She respected that request.

During the session, Julian relived childhood rooms, Patricia’s training and Elena’s disappearance.

He remembered being punished for asking about his father.

He remembered Patricia teaching him to remain calm while afraid.

He remembered a sequence of seven words.

THE CROWN KNEELS WHEN THE BLOODLINE ENDS.

Rebecca entered the first half of the cancellation code.

Julian entered the second.

The system rejected it.

Black Winter’s countdown continued.

Julian tried again.

Nothing.

The psychologist believed one word remained hidden.

Patricia would know it.

She refused to speak unless offered complete immunity.

Karen visited her detention cell.

“You will not receive immunity.”

“Then hospitals will go dark.”

“You would kill innocent people to escape prison?”

“I would allow systems to follow their design.”

Karen placed photographs on the table.

They showed Caroline Reed.

Elena Voss.

Marcus Bell.

The false Lily, Emma.

Grant’s injured sister.

Daniel after twelve years of captivity.

“These are not systems.”

“They are consequences.”

Karen added one final photograph.

Julian as a child.

Patricia looked away.

“You did love him,” Karen said.

“I trained him.”

“You kept him when Robert refused.”

“He was useful.”

“You could have chosen another child.”

Patricia said nothing.

Karen leaned closer.

“Black Winter will kill him too.”

“He is in federal custody.”

“On a medical grid connected to the targeted network.”

Patricia’s control weakened.

Karen continued.

“You told yourself everything you did made him strong.”

“If he dies because you refuse one word, then you did not build him.”

“You destroyed him.”

Patricia whispered the missing word.

Mercy.

The complete phrase became:

THE CROWN KNEELS WHEN MERCY ENDS THE BLOODLINE.

Rebecca entered it.

Black Winter shut down with four hours remaining.

Federal cyber teams seized the network.

The Circle’s remaining members were identified.

Rebecca surrendered.

Before agents took her away, she handed Karen the final restructuring documents.

“You were right,” Karen said.

“About what?”

“No family should own this much power.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Do not make my confession an excuse to keep it.”

Karen signed the first authorization.

Lily would make the final decision when she was legally ready.

Julian’s testimony led to hundreds of arrests.

Patricia was charged with racketeering, kidnapping, conspiracy and multiple murders.

Senator Crane was captured in Canada.

Rebecca accepted responsibility for obstruction and illegal operations.

Nathan began cooperating from his hospital bed.

Daniel prepared to testify against everyone involved in his captivity.

For the first time, the future seemed open.

Then the prison psychologist called Karen.

Julian had disappeared during a medical transfer.

Security footage showed him walking calmly through a restricted door.

No guards stopped him.

No alarms activated.

Someone had entered the Black Winter shutdown phrase into the prison system.

The phrase only five people knew.

Karen.

Rebecca.

Patricia.

The psychologist.

And Lily.

Karen turned toward her daughter.

Lily’s chair was empty.

On the table lay Julian’s broken phone chip and a handwritten message.

I need to finish this before the courts turn him into another excuse:
