CHAPTER 8 — THE WAREHOUSE OF LOST CHILDREN

The first explosion shook the abandoned warehouse.

Windows shattered.

Dust poured from the ceiling.

The lights went black.

For half a second, nobody moved.

Then chaos erupted.

“DOWN!”

Alexander's voice thundered through the darkness.

Gunfire exploded from the upper catwalk.

His security team returned fire immediately.

Victoria grabbed Emma and dropped behind a steel table.

Elena screamed as Lily crawled toward her.

“Sophie!”

“I’m here!”

Sophie appeared from behind a storage crate.

“Stay down!”

Another bullet struck the wall.

Alexander moved through the darkness, counting the flashes.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four shooters.

Maybe five.

He raised his weapon.

A single shot.

One man dropped.

Another fired from the balcony.

Alexander ducked.

“Left side!”

His security chief fired twice.

The shooter disappeared behind a metal pillar.

“Move!”

Alexander rushed forward.

His only thought was the children.

Lily.

Sophie.

Emma.

Nothing else mattered.

He reached the center of the warehouse and saw Victoria.

She was holding Emma.

The baby wasn't crying.

She was simply staring at Alexander.

Victoria smiled.

“You came.”

Alexander raised his weapon.

“Put her down.”

Victoria shook her head.

“You're predictable.”

“Put. Her. Down.”

“You always were.”

Alexander took another step.

Victoria pressed something against Emma's blanket.

Alexander stopped.

“What is that?”

“A transmitter.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Take it away from her.”

“Why?”

“Because you don't know what it does.”

Victoria laughed.

“I know exactly what it does.”

She lifted the device.

“It tells Eden where she is.”

Alexander's face hardened.

“Eden is dead.”

“No.”

Victoria looked around.

“Eden is sleeping.”

Then she pressed the button.

Every screen inside the warehouse turned on.

A single symbol appeared.

000

Alexander froze.

Daniel.

His brother.

The screens flickered.

Then a face appeared.

A young boy.

Six years old.

Dark hair.

Same eyes.

Same face.

Alexander stopped breathing.

“Daniel.”

Victoria watched him carefully.

“You recognize him.”

Alexander stared at the screen.

The boy smiled.

“Alex?”

Alexander's weapon lowered slightly.

His heart was pounding.

“Daniel?”

The voice came through the speakers.

“I'm scared.”

Alexander took another step.

“I’m here.”

“You promised.”

“I know.”

“You forgot me.”

“I didn't.”

“You did.”

Alexander's eyes filled with tears.

“I was made to forget.”

Daniel's face changed.

“You remember now.”

“Yes.”

“Then save me.”

Alexander looked at Victoria.

“What did you do?”

She smiled.

“Nothing.”

“You're using him.”

“No.”

She pointed at the screen.

“I'm giving him a voice.”

Alexander stared.

“Daniel died.”

“His body did.”

She touched Emma's head.

“But his consciousness survived.”

Alexander's expression hardened.

“You put him in my mind.”

“No.”

“Then where is he?”

Victoria smiled.

“In yours.”

Alexander froze.

“You still don't understand.”

She pointed toward Emma.

“She can separate him.”

“And you want to transfer him.”

“Yes.”

“Into Emma?”

Victoria shook her head.

“Into a body.”

Alexander looked around.

“Whose?”

Victoria didn't answer.

A door opened behind her.

A man stepped inside.

Alexander recognized him immediately.

Dr. Marcus Hale.

He was carrying a metal case.

Alexander raised his weapon again.

“You.”

Marcus looked exhausted.

“You need to listen.”

“I have nothing to say to you.”

“You're about to make a mistake.”

“You kidnapped my family.”

Marcus shook his head.

“I didn't.”

“You built Eden.”

“Yes.”

“You experimented on children.”

“Yes.”

“And now you want my daughter.”

“No.”

Alexander's finger tightened around the trigger.

Marcus looked directly at Emma.

“I want her alive.”

“Then why is she here?”

“Because Victoria doesn't understand what Emma is.”

Victoria turned toward him.

“Careful.”

Marcus ignored her.

“Emma isn't a vessel.”

“What is she?”

“A bridge.”

Alexander stared.

“Between what?”

“Memory and consciousness.”

Marcus opened the metal case.

Inside was a small silver device.

Alexander recognized the design.

“That's from Eden.”

“Yes.”

“What does it do?”

“It separates memories from identity.”

Alexander looked at Victoria.

“You've been trying to remove Daniel from me.”

Victoria smiled.

“For years.”

“And put him somewhere else.”

“Exactly.”

“Where?”

Marcus answered.

“Into Subject 000's original neural template.”

Alexander frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus looked toward the screen.

“Daniel's body wasn't destroyed.”

Alexander's blood ran cold.

“What?”

Marcus nodded.

“Your father preserved it.”

“Where?”

“Here.”

The warehouse fell silent.

Alexander stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“That's impossible.”

Marcus pointed toward the floor.

“Below us.”

Alexander looked down.

“You built this warehouse over it?”

“Your grandfather did.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Alexander looked at her.

“Show me.”

She smiled.

“You want to see your brother?”

“Yes.”

“Then bring me the archive.”

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

“You don't have it.”

Victoria's smile disappeared.

“No.”

“Then why did you think I'd bring it?”

“Because you would do anything for your children.”

“I already did.”

“You don't have the original archive.”

“No.”

“Then what did you bring?”

Alexander smiled faintly.

Victoria frowned.

He reached into his coat.

A small black drive appeared.

Victoria's eyes widened.

“The archive.”

She stepped forward.

Alexander held it up.

“This?”

“Yes.”

“You're sure?”

Victoria nodded.

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

“Alexander.”

“You're going to release my family first.”

Victoria laughed.

“You're negotiating?”

“I'm not negotiating.”

He held the drive tighter.

“I'm giving you one chance.”

“Or?”

“You don't get it.”

Victoria stared at him.

Then she looked toward Emma.

“Put the gun down.”

“No.”

“Then I drop her.”

Alexander froze.

Victoria lifted Emma slightly.

Lily screamed.

“NO!”

Alexander looked at her.

“Victoria.”

She smiled.

“You have three seconds.”

“One.”

Alexander raised his weapon.

“Two.”

He aimed directly at Victoria.

“Three.”

A gunshot exploded.

But it wasn't Alexander who fired.

Victoria stumbled backward.

The transmitter fell from her hand.

Emma slipped.

Alexander rushed forward.

He caught the baby before she hit the floor.

Victoria stared at the blood spreading across her shoulder.

Everyone turned.

Sophie stood on the balcony.

Holding a weapon.

Alexander stared at her.

“Sophie?”

She lowered it.

“She was going to hurt Emma.”

Alexander ran toward her.

“You could have been killed.”

Sophie looked at him.

“I wasn't.”

He pulled her into his arms.

“You never do that again.”

“But—”

“No.”

He held her tightly.

“I can't lose another child.”

Sophie closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“You won't.”

Behind them, Victoria slowly stood.

She looked at Sophie.

“You.”

Sophie stared back.

“You ruined everything.”

“No.”

Sophie shook her head.

“You did.”

Victoria's expression hardened.

“You have no idea what you've destroyed.”

Sophie answered quietly:

“I know exactly what I destroyed.”

Then she looked toward the screens.

“Eden.”

Every monitor flickered.

One by one...

they went dark.

Victoria stared in horror.

“What did you do?”

Sophie smiled.

“I learned your system.”

Marcus looked shocked.

“How?”

Sophie pointed to her head.

“You put it here.”

Alexander stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

Sophie looked at him.

“Eden isn't in the machines anymore.”

“Where is it?”

“In me.”

Silence.

Alexander felt his stomach drop.

“No.”

Sophie nodded.

“When you destroyed the network, it didn't disappear.”

“It moved.”

“Into me.”

Alexander looked at Marcus.

“Is that possible?”

Marcus's face was pale.

“Yes.”

Alexander's voice broke.

“Can you get it out?”

Marcus shook his head.

“Not safely.”

Sophie looked at Alexander.

“Don't worry.”

“How can I not worry?”

“Because I can control it.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“No, you can't.”

Sophie looked at him.

“I already do.”

Every screen suddenly displayed a list.

Names.

Dates.

Bank accounts.

Laboratories.

Hospitals.

Politicians.

Corporations.

Alexander stared.

“What is this?”

Sophie answered:

“Everyone who funded Eden.”

Victoria's face went white.

Marcus looked terrified.

“You accessed the archive.”

Sophie nodded.

“All of it.”

Alexander stared at the screens.

There were thousands of names.

Some were famous.

Some were hidden.

Some were people he knew.

One name caught his eye.

He froze.

JONATHAN BLACKWOOD.

His father.

Then another.

MARGARET BLACKWOOD.

His grandmother.

Then another.

ELENA CARTER.

Elena's name.

Alexander turned.

“Elena?”

She looked horrified.

“I didn't fund Eden.”

Sophie looked at her.

“You didn't.”

“Then why is my name there?”

Sophie answered:

“Because they used your identity.”

Alexander's jaw tightened.

“For what?”

“Money transfers.”

Elena covered her mouth.

“I never knew.”

Sophie continued.

“They created accounts in your name.”

“Why?”

“To make you look guilty.”

Alexander stared at the screen.

It was becoming clear.

Eden wasn't simply a secret laboratory.

It was an entire organization.

And someone had spent years building evidence to make Elena the scapegoat.

Alexander looked at Victoria.

“You planned to blame her.”

Victoria said nothing.

“You were going to frame Elena for everything.”

Still nothing.

Alexander stepped closer.

“You wanted me to hate her.”

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

“You already loved her.”

“And that made you angry.”

Victoria looked away.

“Yes.”

“You destroyed my memories.”

“Yes.”

“You separated me from my children.”

“Yes.”

“You nearly killed my family.”

Her voice broke.

“Yes.”

Alexander stared at her.

“Why?”

Victoria looked at him.

“Because I believed you would eventually choose me.”

Alexander shook his head.

“You never loved me.”

“I did.”

“No.”

He looked toward the children.

“You loved the version of me you could control.”

Victoria began crying.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

He stepped back.

“You confused obsession with love.”

Victoria stared at him.

For once...

she had no answer.

Then the warehouse shook.

Everyone looked up.

Marcus's face changed.

“We need to leave.”

Alexander turned.

“What happened?”

“The lower chamber is opening.”

“Why?”

Marcus looked at Sophie.

“She activated it.”

Sophie looked confused.

“I didn't.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Then who did?”

A deep mechanical sound came from beneath them.

The floor opened.

A circular elevator rose from below.

Inside was a glass capsule.

And inside that capsule...

was a body.

Alexander couldn't breathe.

The child looked six years old.

Dark hair.

Pale skin.

Eyes closed.

Connected to dozens of tubes.

Alexander walked toward the capsule.

“Daniel.”

His knees nearly gave way.

His brother was alive.

Not alive in the normal sense.

But his body had been preserved.

Waiting.

For twenty years.

Elena covered her mouth.

“Oh God.”

Alexander touched the glass.

“Daniel.”

The boy's eyes opened.

Alexander stepped backward.

The child looked directly at him.

“Alex?”

Alexander couldn't speak.

Daniel smiled.

“You came back.”

Tears filled Alexander's eyes.

“I found you.”

Daniel looked around.

“Where is Mom?”

Alexander froze.

“She died.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“She died.”

“No.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“She promised she'd come back.”

Alexander looked at Elena.

She was crying.

Daniel looked at her.

“Is that Elena?”

Elena stepped forward.

“Yes.”

Daniel smiled.

“You saved us.”

Elena began sobbing.

“I tried.”

Daniel looked toward Victoria.

His expression changed.

“She hurt you.”

Victoria froze.

“What?”

Daniel stared at her.

“You promised you would save me.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“Daniel…”

“You lied.”

Victoria's face collapsed.

“I was trying to bring you back.”

“You didn't bring me back.”

Daniel looked at Alexander.

“You trapped me.”

Victoria began crying.

“I loved you.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You loved the idea of me.”

The words destroyed her.

She turned away.

Marcus walked toward the capsule.

“We need to disconnect him.”

Alexander looked at him.

“Can he survive?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Possibly.”

“Possibly?”

“He has been sustained artificially for years.”

“How long?”

“Twenty-three years.”

Alexander stared.

“My brother has been alive for twenty-three years?”

“His body has.”

“What about his mind?”

Marcus looked at Sophie.

“That's the problem.”

Sophie stepped closer.

Daniel looked at her.

“You're Sophie.”

She nodded.

“How do you know?”

“I remember you.”

“You were little.”

“So were you.”

Sophie touched the glass.

“You were the first.”

Daniel smiled.

“And you were the second.”

Alexander looked between them.

“What are you talking about?”

Daniel answered:

“We were connected before they connected you.”

Sophie nodded.

“Eden started with him.”

“And ended with Emma.”

Alexander looked at Emma.

The baby was sleeping.

Daniel's expression became serious.

“Don't let them take her.”

Alexander's voice was cold.

“Never.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not just Victoria.”

Alexander frowned.

“Who else?”

Daniel looked toward Marcus.

“Everyone.”

Marcus went pale.

“What did you say?”

Daniel stared at him.

“There are people coming.”

Marcus looked at his watch.

“How many?”

Daniel whispered:

“Too many.”

Then the warehouse doors exploded inward.

Dozens of armed men rushed inside.

Alexander grabbed Emma.

“MOVE!”

Security opened fire.

The warehouse erupted into chaos again.

Victoria ducked behind a pillar.

Marcus ran toward the capsule.

Sophie grabbed Lily.

Elena pulled them toward the exit.

Alexander carried Emma.

“WHERE'S THE EXIT?”

His security chief pointed.

“North door!”

They ran.

Bullets tore through the walls.

Glass shattered.

Smoke filled the warehouse.

Alexander reached the exit.

Then stopped.

Daniel.

He couldn't leave his brother.

He turned.

Marcus was trying to disconnect the capsule.

“I need help!”

Alexander ran back.

“Can he move?”

“Not yet.”

“Then make him.”

“I can't!”

Alexander grabbed the emergency controls.

“Tell me what to do.”

Marcus pointed.

“Pull the red lever.”

Alexander pulled it.

The capsule opened.

Daniel's body collapsed forward.

Alexander caught him.

Daniel was freezing.

“Alex…”

“I've got you.”

“Don't let them…”

“I won't.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You kept your promise.”

Alexander held him tighter.

“What promise?”

Daniel smiled weakly.

“You said you'd come back.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

“I did.”

They ran.

Behind them, the warehouse began collapsing.

Victoria stood alone in the smoke.

Alexander looked back.

She was watching him.

He expected her to attack.

Instead...

she smiled.

Then she raised a small device.

A red button.

Alexander's eyes widened.

“Victoria!”

She pressed it.

Nothing happened.

She looked confused.

Then Sophie appeared behind Alexander.

She smiled.

“I disconnected it.”

Victoria stared.

“What?”

“The trigger.”

Sophie pointed toward the device.

“It's useless.”

Victoria looked at her.

“You think you've won.”

Sophie shook her head.

“No.”

She looked toward Alexander.

“My father taught me something.”

“What?”

“Never fight the person holding the weapon.”

Victoria frowned.

“Then who do you fight?”

Sophie looked at the ceiling.

“The person controlling the weapon.”

Every weapon in the warehouse suddenly powered down.

The armed men stared at their rifles.

Nothing worked.

Sophie had taken control.

Alexander looked at her in disbelief.

“Come on.”

They escaped the warehouse.

Outside, police vehicles surrounded the property.

Helicopters filled the sky.

Paramedics rushed toward them.

Alexander carried Daniel.

Elena held Emma.

Lily held Alexander's hand.

Sophie walked beside them.

For the first time...

they were all together.

But Alexander knew it wasn't over.

Because Daniel was alive.

And Daniel knew something no one else knew.

Something about Eden.

Something about the final archive.

Something about the person who had secretly controlled everything.

As paramedics placed Daniel onto a stretcher, he grabbed Alexander's wrist.

“Alex.”

“What?”

Daniel whispered:

“There's someone worse than Grandfather.”

Alexander froze.

“Who?”

Daniel looked toward the mansion.

His eyes filled with fear.

“The person who created him.”

Alexander stared.

“Who?”

Daniel swallowed.

“I don't know her name.”

“Then how do you know she exists?”

“Because I saw her.”

“When?”

“Every night.”

Alexander's blood ran cold.

“What did she look like?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Like Mom.”

Alexander froze.

“What?”

Daniel whispered:

“She looked exactly like Mom.”

Elena stepped forward.

“What are you saying?”

Daniel opened his eyes.

“Your mother.”

Elena stared.

“My mother died before I was born.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“She was there.”

“Where?”

“In Eden.”

Elena's face went pale.

Daniel continued:

“She was the one giving the orders.”

Alexander stared at Elena.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Sophie.

The impossible truth began forming.

The person behind Eden...

the person who had manipulated Victoria...

the person who had controlled Alexander's father...

might not be a stranger.

She might be someone who had been standing beside Elena's family all along.

Alexander looked toward the dark mansion.

A single light turned on in an upstairs window.

Someone was watching them.

Then the curtains moved.

Alexander saw the silhouette of an elderly woman.

She lifted one hand.

And waved.

Daniel began screaming.

“No!”

Alexander turned.

Daniel was shaking violently.

“That's her!”

“Who?”

Daniel pointed toward the window.

“Her!”

The light suddenly went out.

Alexander ordered the police to search the mansion.

They found nothing.

No woman.

No footprints.

No hidden passage.

Nothing.

Except one object.

A small wooden box sitting in the center of the upstairs bedroom.

Alexander opened it.

Inside was a silver bracelet.

The same bracelet from the photograph.

And a note.

He unfolded it.

Only seven words were written:

YOU FOUND DANIEL. NOW FIND YOUR MOTHER.

Alexander stared at the message.

Elena whispered:

“My mother is dead.”

Alexander looked at her.

“Maybe.”

Then he looked at the empty hallway.

“But apparently, dead people have been lying to us for years.”

Behind them, Daniel suddenly whispered:

“She's coming.”

Everyone turned.

Daniel's eyes were fixed on the darkness.

“Who?”

He answered:

“Grandmother.”

The lights went out.

And somewhere in the mansion...

May you like

an old woman's voice whispered:

“Welcome home, Alexander.”
