CHAPTER 12 — ONE MEMORY WILL SURVIVE

The machine screamed.
Not like metal.
Not like electricity.
Like something alive.
Daniel's body jerked inside the restraint chair as thousands of tiny lights traveled across the walls.
Alexander slammed both hands against the glass.
“DANIEL!”
Daniel's eyes opened.
For one terrifying second, they were completely empty.
Then he whispered:
“Alex…”
Alexander's heart broke.
“I'm here.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“I know.”
A mechanical voice echoed through the chamber.
“SUBJECT 000 SYNCHRONIZATION: 18%.”
Alexander turned toward Jonathan.
“Shut it down.”
“I can't.”
“Then find someone who can.”
Jonathan rushed toward the control panel.
“Your father designed this system.”
“Then you know how to stop it.”
“I know how to start it.”
“That's not good enough.”
Jonathan stared at the controls.
“There is one emergency override.”
“Where?”
“Inside the core.”
Alexander pointed toward the machine.
“Then we'll go inside.”
Jonathan shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because the core isn't physical.”
Alexander frowned.
“Then what is it?”
“It's memory.”
Alexander stared.
Jonathan continued:
“The system doesn't store memories on hard drives.”
“Then where?”
“Inside human neural patterns.”
Alexander looked at Daniel.
“So the machine is using him.”
“Yes.”
“How do we disconnect him?”
“We need to remove the memory pattern manually.”
Alexander stared.
“How?”
Jonathan looked at him.
“Someone has to enter his memory.”
Alexander understood.
“Me.”
Jonathan nodded.
“You're the only one genetically compatible.”
Alexander stepped toward the machine.
“Do it.”
Jonathan grabbed his arm.
“If you enter his memory…”
“What?”
“You may not come back.”
Alexander looked at Daniel.
“Then I don't come back.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
“No.”
Alexander looked at him.
Daniel whispered:
“Don't.”
“I'm not leaving you.”
“You don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
Daniel shook his head.
“If you go inside…”
He paused.
“You'll see everything.”
Alexander swallowed.
“Good.”
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“You'll see what Dad did.”
“I already know.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You don't.”
The machine announced:
SYNC RATE: 32%.
Alexander looked at Jonathan.
“Now.”
Jonathan activated the interface.
A helmet descended over Alexander's head.
Elena rushed forward.
“Alexander!”
He looked at her.
“Take care of the girls.”
“Don't say that.”
“Promise me.”
She nodded through tears.
“I promise.”
Alexander looked at Lily.
She was terrified.
“Daddy?”
He smiled.
“I'll be back.”
Lily shook her head.
“Don't go.”
Alexander crouched.
He kissed her forehead.
“I always come back.”
Lily whispered:
“You didn't last time.”
Alexander froze.
“What?”
She looked down.
“You promised that before.”
Alexander felt a chill.
“What do you remember?”
Lily looked at him.
“You went into the white room.”
“When?”
“Before I was four.”
Alexander's breathing stopped.
“I was there?”
Lily nodded.
“You came to get me.”
“What happened?”
“Dad caught you.”
Alexander looked toward his mother.
She closed her eyes.
Lily continued:
“He made you choose.”
“Choose what?”
“Me…”
She began crying.
“…or Daniel.”
Alexander couldn't speak.
Daniel screamed from the machine.
“STOP!”
The synchronization rose.
47%.
Jonathan shouted:
“Alexander!”
He turned.
The machine was ready.
He stepped inside.
Everything disappeared.
Alexander opened his eyes.
He was standing in a hospital corridor.
But it wasn't the present.
It was twenty-four years earlier.
He looked down.
His hands were smaller.
He was a child.
A boy of seven.
He turned.
Daniel was standing beside him.
“You're here.”
Alexander stared.
“Daniel?”
“You remember now.”
A door opened.
Their father stepped out.
“Boys.”
Alexander's stomach dropped.
He remembered this.
But not completely.
Their father smiled.
“Come with me.”
Daniel grabbed Alexander's hand.
“Don't.”
Their father looked at him.
“Daniel.”
“No.”
“You're going to help me.”
“With what?”
“Your memory.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't want to.”
Their father smiled.
“You don't get to choose.”
He opened the door.
Inside was a laboratory.
Alexander saw the chair.
The machines.
The restraints.
And a little girl.
Lily.
Alexander froze.
“She's here.”
Daniel nodded.
“She was four months old.”
Alexander looked at himself.
“What was I doing?”
“You were trying to save her.”
His father entered.
“Alexander.”
Young Alexander stepped forward.
“Let her go.”
Their father laughed.
“You still think you can tell me what to do.”
“She didn't do anything.”
“She doesn't need to.”
“Why are you hurting her?”
“I'm not.”
“You're lying.”
Their father grabbed Alexander by the shoulder.
“You're going to learn something today.”
He pointed at Daniel.
“People are memories.”
Alexander frowned.
“What?”
“If I control the memory…”
He looked at Daniel.
“…I control the person.”
Young Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
Their father smiled.
“Watch.”
He activated the machine.
Daniel screamed.
Alexander lunged toward him.
His father stopped him.
“Don't.”
“Stop!”
“You want him to live?”
“Yes!”
“Then make a choice.”
Young Alexander stared.
“What choice?”
His father pointed toward Lily.
“Her memory…”
Then toward Daniel.
“…or his.”
Alexander stared.
His father continued:
“Only one can be preserved.”
Young Alexander began crying.
“I want both.”
“You can't have both.”
“Please.”
“Choose.”
Alexander looked at Lily.
Then Daniel.
He whispered:
“Daniel.”
His father smiled.
“Wrong.”
The machine activated.
Lily's memory pattern was transferred.
Daniel screamed.
Alexander shouted:
“STOP!”
The room exploded with light.
Alexander woke up screaming.
He ripped the helmet from his head.
Daniel was still inside the machine.
Jonathan shouted:
“Alexander!”
He looked around.
“How long?”
“Three minutes.”
“It felt like years.”
Jonathan grabbed his shoulder.
“You saw it?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“Dad.”
Jonathan stared.
“What did he do?”
Alexander looked at Daniel.
“He wasn't experimenting on Daniel.”
Jonathan frowned.
“He was transferring Daniel's memories.”
“Into what?”
Alexander looked toward the central processor.
“Into me.”
Jonathan's face went white.
“No.”
“Yes.”
Alexander touched his head.
“He made me the backup.”
Jonathan stepped backward.
“That explains the compatibility.”
Alexander stared.
“I'm carrying Daniel's original memories.”
“Yes.”
“That means if I die…”
“His memories die with you.”
Alexander looked at Daniel.
“Then we can't disconnect him.”
Jonathan nodded.
“Not safely.”
The machine announced:
SYNC RATE: 71%.
Jonathan stared at the screen.
“We're running out of time.”
Alexander looked toward Emma.
She was still in Elena's arms.
Her eyes were closed.
Then suddenly...
Emma opened them.
She looked directly at Alexander.
And spoke.
Not a baby sound.
A word.
“Daddy.”
Everyone froze.
Elena stared.
Alexander felt tears fill his eyes.
Emma reached toward him.
He moved closer.
She touched his hand.
The entire machine went silent.
Every light shut off.
Daniel's restraints released.
He collapsed.
Alexander caught him.
“Daniel!”
Daniel opened his eyes.
“I saw him.”
“Who?”
“Our father.”
Alexander nodded.
“I did too.”
Daniel looked toward Emma.
“She stopped it.”
Jonathan stared at the monitors.
“No.”
“What?”
Jonathan shook his head.
“She didn't stop it.”
“Then what did she do?”
“She absorbed it.”
Alexander froze.
“What?”
Jonathan pointed toward the screen.
The memory data was moving.
Not into Daniel.
Not into Alexander.
Into Emma.
Alexander's blood ran cold.
“Get her away.”
Elena backed away.
But it was too late.
Emma began crying.
The monitors exploded with activity.
Thousands of memory patterns appeared.
Faces.
Names.
Children.
Adults.
Deaths.
Births.
Entire lives.
All flowing toward one tiny child.
Jonathan shouted:
“She's taking the archive!”
Alexander grabbed Emma.
“Stop!”
Emma screamed.
The chamber shook.
Then she went silent.
Her eyes opened.
For a second...
they didn't look like a baby's eyes.
They looked ancient.
She stared at Alexander.
Then said:
“Daddy.”
Alexander held her tightly.
“I’m here.”
Emma touched his cheek.
Then whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
Alexander froze.
She shouldn't know those words.
“How?”
Emma's eyes closed.
The machines shut down.
Silence.
Jonathan stared.
“She has them.”
Alexander looked at him.
“Has what?”
“Every memory.”
“Every memory of what?”
“Eden.”
Alexander's face changed.
“Can she remember everything?”
Jonathan nodded.
“Everyone who was connected.”
Alexander looked at Emma.
“Can she tell us what happened?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Jonathan looked at the child.
“Ask her.”
Alexander swallowed.
He knelt.
“Emma?”
She looked at him.
“Where is my father?”
Emma pointed toward the wall.
Alexander frowned.
“What?”
She pointed again.
“Behind the wall.”
Jonathan immediately moved toward it.
They removed a metal panel.
Behind it was a hidden room.
Inside stood a chair.
And in the chair...
was an elderly man.
Dead.
Alexander stared.
His father's body.
Jonathan whispered:
“He was never alive.”
Alexander walked closer.
A monitor beside the body activated.
A recording appeared.
His father looked into the camera.
“If you're watching this…”
He smiled.
“…then my son has finally opened the archive.”
Alexander stared.
The recording continued.
“I know you hate me.”
“You should.”
“I hurt Daniel.”
“I hurt Elena.”
“I hurt your mother.”
“I destroyed countless lives.”
“But I did it for one reason.”
Alexander clenched his fists.
“What reason?”
His father answered:
“To defeat death.”
Alexander laughed bitterly.
“You killed children to defeat death?”
His father nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because death isn't natural.”
Alexander stared.
His father continued:
“Memory is identity.”
“If memory survives…”
“The person survives.”
Alexander shook his head.
“You're insane.”
“Perhaps.”
“But I discovered something.”
The screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
A young Elena.
Pregnant.
Alexander's father continued:
“Your daughter is the proof.”
Alexander froze.
“Emma was never meant to be a weapon.”
“She was meant to be the first immortal.”
Elena gasped.
Alexander's father continued:
“She can hold memories without being consumed by them.”
“She can separate them.”
“Choose them.”
“Return them.”
“And most importantly…”
The recording paused.
“She can preserve a human identity after the body dies.”
Alexander stared at Emma.
His father's voice continued:
“That's why I didn't destroy Eden.”
“That's why I didn't destroy myself.”
“I knew one day she would come.”
Alexander's voice broke.
“You planned all of this.”
The recording answered:
“Yes.”
Then another file appeared.
FINAL SUBJECT: EMMA BLACKWOOD
STATUS: COMPLETE
Alexander's blood ran cold.
Jonathan stared at the screen.
“Complete?”
Alexander turned.
“What does that mean?”
Jonathan didn't answer.
Alexander grabbed him.
“What does COMPLETE mean?”
Jonathan whispered:
“The experiment worked.”
“What's the experiment?”
“To create a human being capable of carrying another person's identity.”
Alexander stared at Emma.
“Whose identity?”
Jonathan looked at the final file.
Then his face changed.
“Oh God.”
“What?”
Jonathan pointed.
The screen displayed:
PRIMARY MEMORY DONOR: ALEXANDER BLACKWOOD
Alexander froze.
Then another line appeared.
SECONDARY MEMORY DONOR: JONATHAN BLACKWOOD
Then another.
TERTIARY MEMORY DONOR: DANIEL BLACKWOOD
Alexander stared.
“She has all of us.”
Jonathan nodded.
“But that's impossible.”
“Apparently not.”
Alexander looked at Emma.
Then the final line appeared.
FINAL MEMORY DONOR: ELENA CARTER
Elena began crying.
“No…”
Alexander turned.
“What?”
Elena shook her head.
“I remember.”
“What?”
She looked at him.
“The day Emma was born.”
Alexander stepped toward her.
“What happened?”
Elena whispered:
“I held her.”
“And?”
“Your father came into the room.”
“What did he do?”
“He touched her forehead.”
“And then?”
Elena closed her eyes.
“He told me something.”
“What?”
“He said…”
She looked at Emma.
“…she wouldn't be his granddaughter.”
Alexander frowned.
“What would she be?”
Elena's voice broke.
“She would be him.”
Silence.
Jonathan's eyes widened.
“No.”
Alexander stared.
“What does that mean?”
Jonathan stepped backward.
“It means your father planned to transfer his consciousness.”
“Into Emma?”
“Yes.”
Alexander looked at the dead body.
“But he's dead.”
Jonathan nodded.
“His memory isn't.”
Alexander suddenly understood.
“The final donor…”
Jonathan whispered:
“Wasn't supposed to be Elena.”
Alexander looked at the screen.
The final line changed.
DONOR STATUS: DECEASED
TRANSFER TARGET: EMMA BLACKWOOD
TRANSFER DATE: TODAY
Alexander's blood ran cold.
“Today?”
Jonathan nodded.
The machine suddenly activated again.
A voice filled the chamber.
His father's voice.
“Hello, Alexander.”
Alexander turned.
“You're dead.”
The voice laughed.
“Yes.”
“Then how are you speaking?”
“Through her.”
Alexander looked at Emma.
Her eyes opened.
For a moment...
they were not the eyes of a baby.
The voice continued through the speakers.
“Your daughter is my new body.”
Alexander tightened his arms around her.
“No.”
“Stop me.”
“How?”
“You can't.”
The machine began powering up.
CONSCIOUSNESS TRANSFER: 1%
Elena screamed.
“Alexander!”
He looked at Jonathan.
“Destroy the system.”
“We need the core.”
“Where?”
Jonathan pointed at Emma.
“The core is inside her.”
Alexander froze.
“What?”
Jonathan's voice trembled.
“If we destroy the system…”
“We destroy Emma.”
Alexander stared at his daughter.
The machine continued.
5%
10%
Emma began crying.
Alexander held her.
“Daddy…”
Her voice was tiny.
Normal.
Human.
He whispered:
“I've got you.”
But then her voice changed.
Older.
Colder.
“Alexander.”
He froze.
Emma's eyes opened.
The old man's voice came from her lips.
“Let me in.”
Alexander stepped backward.
“No.”
Emma smiled.
And the voice whispered:
“You already did.”
The lights exploded.
The entire chamber went dark.
Then...
Lily screamed.
“DADDY!”
Alexander turned.
A shadow stood behind her.
A man.
Tall.
Motionless.
Smiling.
And Alexander knew immediately.
It wasn't his father.
It wasn't Jonathan.
It wasn't Daniel.
It wasn't anyone he had expected.
It was someone Eden had erased from every record.
Someone who had been watching the entire time.
The man stepped into the light.
And said:
“Hello, Alexander.”
Jonathan stared at him in horror.
“No…”
Alexander looked at Jonathan.
“Who is he?”
Jonathan's face went completely white.
“The original creator.”
The man smiled.
“Finally.”
He looked at Emma.
“You brought my daughter back.”
Alexander's blood froze.
“Your daughter?”
The man smiled.
“Yes.”
Then he looked at Elena.
“And she has been waiting for me for twenty-four years.”
Elena stared at him.
She couldn't breathe.
Because she knew that face.
She whispered:
“Father…”
The man smiled.
“Hello, Elena.”
May you like
And behind him...
the vault doors slammed shut.
