CHAPTER 11 — THE LITTLE GIRL WHO REMEMBERED

“I remember everything.”

Lily's voice was barely louder than a whisper.

But in the underground chamber, everyone heard it.

Alexander turned toward her.

His daughter stood completely still.

Her tiny hands were trembling.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“Lily?”

She looked at him.

“Daddy…”

Alexander immediately dropped to his knees.

“What do you remember?”

Lily stared at the screen where Victoria's face had disappeared.

“A room.”

“What room?”

“A white room.”

Alexander's heart began pounding.

“What happened there?”

Lily squeezed her eyes shut.

“I was little.”

“You were four?”

She shook her head.

“Smaller.”

Alexander looked at Jonathan.

Jonathan's face had gone pale.

“You knew.”

Jonathan didn't answer.

Alexander stood.

“You knew this could happen.”

“I suspected.”

“You knew my daughter had memories from Eden.”

“I didn't know which memories.”

Alexander grabbed Jonathan by the collar.

“Don't lie to me.”

Jonathan didn't resist.

“I am not lying.”

“Then explain.”

Jonathan looked toward Lily.

“She's remembering the original subject.”

“Daniel?”

“No.”

Alexander froze.

“Then who?”

Jonathan whispered:

“The first Lily.”

Alexander's grip loosened.

“What does that mean?”

Jonathan looked at the crystal containing Lily's name.

“The girl Victoria showed you was real.”

“She was born twenty-four years ago.”

“She was Subject 000-A.”

Alexander stared.

“Then why does my daughter have her memories?”

“Because the original Lily was used as a template.”

“For what?”

“Identity reconstruction.”

Alexander's jaw tightened.

“You copied a child.”

“Yes.”

“Into my daughter?”

“No.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“That's the part you don't understand.”

Lily suddenly spoke.

“They didn't put her inside me.”

Everyone turned.

Lily looked at Alexander.

“She put me inside her.”

Silence.

Alexander knelt again.

“What?”

Lily wiped her tears.

“I remember being scared.”

“What happened?”

“She was crying.”

“Who?”

“Mom.”

Alexander looked at Elena.

Elena was trembling.

Lily continued:

“She said she didn't want to lose me.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Alexander looked at Jonathan.

“What did Eden do?”

Jonathan answered:

“They attempted something different.”

“What?”

“Memory inheritance.”

Alexander frowned.

“Explain it.”

Jonathan pointed toward Lily.

“Instead of implanting memories into an adult, they tried to make a child naturally inherit them.”

“Why?”

“Because artificial memories eventually deteriorated.”

“But natural memories didn't.”

Jonathan nodded.

“They needed a child whose brain could accept another person's memory without rejecting it.”

Alexander looked at Lily.

“And they chose her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she was born with an unusual neural pattern.”

Alexander's voice became cold.

“Who were her parents?”

Jonathan hesitated.

Alexander grabbed him again.

“Who?”

Jonathan looked at Elena.

“Her mother.”

Alexander froze.

“What?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Lily was Elena's biological daughter.”

Elena began sobbing.

“No…”

Jonathan continued:

“Lily was born before Emma.”

Alexander stared at Elena.

“You had another daughter.”

Elena covered her face.

“I don't remember.”

“I know.”

“How could I forget my own child?”

Jonathan answered:

“Because you were forced to.”

Alexander looked at Lily.

The little girl was crying.

“Mom?”

Elena slowly approached.

Lily stared at her.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Lily whispered:

“I know your voice.”

Elena collapsed to her knees.

“My baby.”

She opened her arms.

Lily ran into them.

Elena held her tightly.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily cried against her chest.

“You left me.”

“I didn't.”

“You did.”

“I swear I didn't.”

“You promised you'd come back.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I know.”

Alexander watched them.

Something inside him broke.

He had always believed Lily was his daughter.

She was.

But now he understood that the truth was even more complicated.

She wasn't a stranger.

She wasn't an impostor.

She was the same little girl he had loved from the beginning.

But Eden had stolen pieces of her identity.

And someone had spent years trying to convince everyone that those pieces belonged to someone else.

Alexander looked toward the screens.

“Victoria.”

Her face appeared again.

She smiled.

“Beautiful, isn't it?”

Alexander's expression hardened.

“You did this.”

“No.”

“You experimented on Lily.”

“I protected her.”

“You erased her memories.”

“I preserved her.”

“You destroyed her family.”

Victoria shook her head.

“Your family destroyed itself.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“Where are you?”

“You'll find me.”

“Where?”

“Where it began.”

The screen changed.

A hospital room.

Alexander recognized it.

The same hospital where Daniel had been kept.

But the date was different.

Twenty-four years earlier.

A nurse carried a newborn girl.

A woman stood beside her.

The woman's face was hidden.

Then the camera turned.

Alexander saw her.

Elena.

Young.

Holding the newborn.

Alexander's breathing stopped.

Elena stared at the screen.

“I remember that.”

Everyone looked at her.

“What?”

She touched her forehead.

“I remember.”

Alexander moved closer.

“What?”

“I was holding her.”

“Lily?”

Elena nodded.

“I was holding Lily.”

“What happened next?”

Elena closed her eyes.

“A man came in.”

“Who?”

“My father.”

The room fell silent.

Elena's voice shook.

“He told me they were going to take her.”

Alexander's hands tightened.

“Why?”

“Because she was special.”

“What did you do?”

“I fought him.”

“And?”

“I lost.”

Alexander looked at Lily.

Elena continued:

“They took her.”

“Then how did she come back?”

Elena looked confused.

“I don't know.”

Jonathan answered:

“Because your mother stole her.”

Elena turned.

“My mother?”

Jonathan nodded.

“She took Lily out of Eden.”

“But the girl Victoria showed us…”

“Was the same girl.”

Alexander stared.

“Then why does Victoria claim Lily was someone else?”

Jonathan's expression darkened.

“Because Victoria never wanted you to know Lily survived.”

“Why?”

“Because Lily was evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

Jonathan pointed toward the memory crystal.

“She was the first successful child.”

Alexander looked at Lily.

“Successful at what?”

“Remembering another person's memories without losing her own.”

Alexander's face changed.

“So when Lily said she remembered everything…”

Jonathan nodded.

“She wasn't remembering someone else's life.”

“She was remembering her own.”

Alexander looked at Elena.

“And Eden erased it.”

“Yes.”

Lily suddenly spoke.

“I remember Grandma.”

Everyone turned.

“Which grandma?”

Lily pointed toward the doorway.

“Her.”

Nobody was standing there.

Then a woman's voice echoed through the chamber.

“You remember me.”

Alexander spun around.

His mother stood in the doorway.

Alive.

She looked older than she had in the photograph.

But her eyes were unmistakable.

Alexander stared.

“Mom.”

She smiled.

“My son.”

He walked toward her.

Then stopped.

“You knew about Lily.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she survived.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe she was just my daughter.”

“She is your daughter.”

“That's not what I asked.”

His mother sighed.

“I knew the truth.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Lily's life depended on it.”

Alexander's anger rose.

“You lied to me.”

“I protected you.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

His mother looked at him.

“Because it's true.”

“No.”

Alexander shook his head.

“You protected yourselves.”

He pointed toward the children.

“While they suffered.”

His mother looked at Lily.

“I regret that.”

“Regret doesn't give them their childhood back.”

“I know.”

“Then tell me everything.”

His mother nodded.

“Everything?”

“Everything.”

She stepped into the chamber.

“Then we need to start with the night Lily disappeared.”

The lights dimmed.

A recording began.

Twenty-four years earlier.

Elena stood in a hospital corridor.

She was seventeen.

She was crying.

Her father stood beside her.

“Give me the baby.”

“No.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“She belongs to Eden.”

“She belongs to me.”

Her father slapped her.

Alexander clenched his fists.

Elena's younger self fell against the wall.

Her father took the baby.

Then another woman appeared.

Margaret.

She grabbed the infant.

“Run.”

Elena stared.

“Mom?”

“Run.”

Margaret carried Lily away.

But someone followed.

A younger Jonathan.

He caught them at the exit.

“Give her to me.”

Margaret refused.

“You'll kill her.”

“No.”

“You already killed Daniel.”

Jonathan froze.

“I didn't kill Daniel.”

“You let them.”

“I tried to stop them.”

“You failed.”

Jonathan looked at Lily.

Then at Margaret.

“You can't keep her.”

Margaret whispered:

“I can save her.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“Not from Eden.”

Margaret looked at the infant.

“Then I'll save her from you.”

She ran.

The recording ended.

Alexander stared at his mother.

“You stole Lily.”

“Yes.”

“To protect her.”

“Yes.”

“Then where did she go?”

Margaret hesitated.

“Into hiding.”

“With whom?”

“A family.”

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

“What family?”

Margaret didn't answer.

Lily suddenly spoke.

“The Carter family.”

Elena stared.

“What?”

Lily nodded.

“They raised me.”

Alexander looked confused.

“But you were raised with us.”

Lily shook her head.

“Not at first.”

Alexander's heart raced.

“What happened?”

Lily closed her eyes.

“I remember a house.”

“A woman.”

“Two children.”

“She loved me.”

“Who?”

“I don't know her name.”

Jonathan answered:

“Sarah Carter.”

Elena's face went pale.

“My sister.”

Alexander froze.

“You have a sister?”

Elena nodded.

“She died.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“No.”

Elena stared.

“She disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“Twenty years ago.”

“She disappeared because she took Lily.”

Alexander stared.

The puzzle was beginning to fit.

Sarah had taken Lily.

Raised her for years.

Then something happened.

“What happened to Sarah?”

Jonathan looked at Margaret.

Margaret answered:

“She was killed.”

“By whom?”

“Your father.”

Alexander's expression hardened.

“My father killed Elena's sister?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she refused to return Lily.”

Alexander looked at Lily.

“How did Lily end up with us?”

Margaret answered:

“After Sarah died, we brought Lily back.”

“But she had no memories?”

“She had been given a memory suppressant.”

“By Eden?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To make sure she couldn't identify anyone.”

Alexander looked at Lily.

“And it worked.”

“For years.”

“Until now.”

Margaret nodded.

“Until the vault opened.”

Alexander looked at the crystal.

“So opening the archive restored Lily's memories.”

“Yes.”

“Then what about Daniel?”

“His memories are restoring too.”

Alexander looked toward his brother.

Daniel was staring at Lily.

“I remember her.”

Alexander approached.

“What do you remember?”

Daniel smiled.

“She used to sing.”

Lily looked at him.

“You remember me?”

“Yes.”

“What did we do?”

“You hid me.”

“From who?”

“Dad.”

Lily began crying.

Daniel continued:

“You said he would hurt me.”

Alexander looked at the screen.

Another memory appeared.

Two children.

Daniel and Lily.

Hiding beneath a table.

Lily whispering:

“Don't cry.”

Daniel nodded.

“Are they coming?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“Dad.”

The recording stopped.

Alexander's fists tightened.

“My father did this.”

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.”

“He separated the children.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To continue the experiments.”

Alexander looked at Jonathan.

“And you helped.”

“Yes.”

Alexander looked at his mother.

“And you?”

She lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

Alexander stepped back.

He was surrounded by people who had known the truth for decades.

Every adult had made a choice.

And every child had paid the price.

Then Emma began crying.

Everyone turned.

Alexander rushed to her.

She was awake.

Her tiny eyes were fixed on the memory crystal.

She reached toward it.

Alexander picked her up.

“What's wrong?”

Emma stopped crying.

She stared at the crystal containing her name.

Then she smiled.

Daniel looked at her.

His expression changed.

“She sees them.”

Alexander frowned.

“Sees what?”

“The memories.”

Emma reached toward him.

Alexander held her closer.

Then suddenly...

he heard a voice.

Not from the speakers.

Inside his head.

Daddy.

Alexander froze.

Emma hadn't spoken.

But he heard it.

Clear.

Daddy, don't open the last door.

Alexander looked around.

“Did anyone hear that?”

Everyone stared.

“No.”

He looked at Emma.

She smiled.

Then another voice entered his mind.

He's waiting.

Alexander whispered:

“Who?”

Emma's eyes closed.

The one who made me.

Alexander's blood ran cold.

Jonathan stepped forward.

“What happened?”

Alexander looked at him.

“Emma spoke to me.”

Jonathan's face changed.

“What did she say?”

“She said someone is waiting.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Jonathan stared at the child.

Then he whispered:

“No.”

“What?”

Jonathan backed away.

“She shouldn't be able to do that.”

“What?”

“She shouldn't be able to access the original memories without the vault.”

Alexander tightened his arms around Emma.

“Then what does that mean?”

Jonathan looked terrified.

“It means the final experiment wasn't the archive.”

“What was it?”

Jonathan stared at Emma.

“It was her.”

Silence.

Alexander looked at his daughter.

“What did they make her?”

Jonathan whispered:

“Nothing.”

Alexander frowned.

“What?”

“They didn't make Emma.”

“Then who did?”

Jonathan looked at Elena.

“You did.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“You gave birth to her.”

“Yes.”

“But you don't remember what happened before she was born.”

Alexander's heart sank.

“What happened?”

Jonathan answered:

“Elena was pregnant with Emma when Eden was destroyed.”

“And?”

“She disappeared for six months.”

Alexander turned toward Elena.

“Where were you?”

Elena shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Jonathan's voice became quiet.

“You were inside the original laboratory.”

Alexander's expression hardened.

“Why?”

“To finish the experiment.”

“What experiment?”

Jonathan stared at Emma.

“The creation of a child capable of carrying every memory without losing herself.”

Alexander looked at his daughter.

“No.”

Jonathan nodded.

“Emma is the final subject.”

Alexander's eyes filled with anger.

“You experimented on my pregnant wife?”

“I didn't.”

“Who did?”

Jonathan didn't answer.

Alexander stepped toward him.

“Who?”

Jonathan finally whispered:

“Your father.”

Alexander froze.

“My father died.”

“Yes.”

“He's dead.”

Jonathan looked at him.

“His body is.”

Alexander's heart stopped.

“What?”

Jonathan pointed toward the final chamber.

“His mind is still inside Eden.”

The lights suddenly went black.

Every machine activated.

A deep voice filled the chamber.

Alexander knew that voice.

He had heard it in his nightmares.

His father's voice.

“Hello, son.”

Alexander's entire body went cold.

Daniel began screaming.

Lily covered her ears.

Sophie grabbed Elena.

Emma stared into the darkness.

Then she smiled.

The voice continued:

“I've been waiting for you.”

Alexander raised his weapon.

“Show yourself.”

A screen lit up.

An old man appeared.

Alexander's father.

Alive.

Or something very close to alive.

He smiled.

“You opened the vault.”

Alexander stared.

“You're dead.”

His father laughed.

“That's what I wanted everyone to believe.”

Alexander's voice shook.

“What do you want?”

The old man looked directly at Emma.

“My granddaughter.”

Alexander held Emma tighter.

“You're never touching her.”

His father smiled.

“That's where you're wrong.”

The screen changed.

A countdown appeared.

MEMORY TRANSFER — 09:59

Alexander's heart stopped.

“What is that?”

His father answered:

“The final procedure.”

“For Emma?”

“Yes.”

Alexander raised his weapon toward the screen.

“If you touch her—”

“You'll kill me?”

His father laughed.

“You can't kill a memory.”

The countdown continued.

09:41

Jonathan looked at the machines.

“We have to shut it down.”

“How?”

“Destroy the central processor.”

“Where?”

Jonathan pointed toward the floor.

“Under us.”

Alexander looked down.

Then the entire chamber began shaking.

A hidden elevator opened.

Inside was a single empty chair.

Beside it was another screen.

One message appeared:

SUBJECT 000 — RETURN TO ORIGIN

Daniel stared.

“No.”

Alexander looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel whispered:

“They're going to put me back.”

“Where?”

“In the machine.”

Alexander stepped toward the elevator.

“No.”

Daniel grabbed his arm.

“If I go in…”

“What?”

“You'll forget me.”

Alexander stared.

“Never.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You already did once.”

The countdown continued.

08:53

Alexander looked at the children.

Then at Elena.

Then at his mother.

Then at Jonathan.

Everyone was afraid.

But Alexander wasn't.

Not anymore.

He stepped into the elevator.

“Then we stop it.”

Jonathan followed.

Sophie stepped forward.

“I'm coming.”

Alexander shook his head.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You need me.”

He hesitated.

She was right.

He nodded.

“Stay behind me.”

Elena grabbed his hand.

“Alexander.”

He looked at her.

“I remember now.”

“What?”

“The night Emma was born.”

Alexander froze.

“What happened?”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“I wasn't alone.”

“Who was there?”

She whispered:

“Your father.”

Alexander's expression hardened.

“And he told me something.”

“What?”

Elena looked toward Emma.

“He said she wasn't his experiment.”

She swallowed.

“He said she was his replacement.”

The elevator doors closed.

The countdown continued.

07:59

And somewhere beneath them...

a machine began powering up.

Inside it...

a voice whispered:

“Welcome, Subject 000.”

Daniel screamed.

Alexander reached for him.

But the doors slammed shut.

And the machine activated.

TRANSFER INITIATED.

The lights went red.

Then every screen displayed the same message:

ONE MEMORY WILL SURVIVE.

Alexander stared at the words.

And for the first time...

he understood the true purpose of Eden.

It had never been designed to make people immortal.

It had been designed to decide who deserved to remain.

May you like

And now...

his entire family was being forced to make that choice.
