CHAPTER 5 — THE BABY THEY NEVER WANTED

The red lights continued flashing.

The alarm screamed through the underground room.

Alexander held Emma tightly against his chest while Lily stood behind him, gripping Sophie's hand.

Elena was frozen near the monitor.

She couldn't take her eyes off the final message.

TARGET: EMMA BLACKWOOD.

For five years, Alexander had believed his greatest enemy was a person.

Now he understood.

It was a system.

A system that had survived deaths, disappearances, erased memories, stolen children, and broken families.

And somehow, his eight-month-old daughter was at the center of it.

A heavy metallic sound echoed through the corridor.

The security doors were locking.

One after another.

Alexander looked at his security chief.

"How long?"

"Before the entire level seals?"

"Yes."

"Maybe three minutes."

"Then get us out."

The man ran toward the control panel.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

"No response."

Alexander looked at the screen.

The words had changed.

PHASE TWO

ARCHIVE RECOVERY

PRIMARY SUBJECT: EMMA

SECONDARY SUBJECTS: SOPHIE / LILY

Alexander's blood ran cold.

"They've activated the system."

Elena stepped toward him.

"We need to leave."

"I know."

"No."

She grabbed his arm.

"You don't understand. If the system activates fully, it won't just lock the doors."

"What will it do?"

Elena looked at Emma.

"It will wake the archive."

Alexander stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

"Every memory stored inside Eden will become accessible."

"And?"

"And anyone connected to the network will experience them."

Alexander looked at Sophie.

The girl's face had gone pale.

"She's connected."

Elena nodded.

"If Eden wakes, Sophie could lose control."

Sophie shook her head.

"I'm fine."

"You don't know that."

Sophie looked at Alexander.

"I've been fine for years."

"Because the network was dormant."

"What happens when it wakes?"

Elena didn't answer.

Sophie understood.

"People die?"

Elena looked down.

"Maybe."

Alexander stepped toward the control panel.

"Then we shut it down."

The security chief shook his head.

"Sir, there is no manual shutdown."

"Then find one."

"There isn't."

"Everything has a shutdown."

"Not this."

Alexander stared at him.

The man swallowed.

"Your grandfather designed Eden so it could survive human interference."

"Meaning?"

"Meaning if someone tries to destroy it..."

The lights flickered.

"...it protects itself."

Alexander looked at Emma.

"What does it protect?"

The security chief answered:

"The archive."

A deep vibration passed through the floor.

Sophie suddenly grabbed her head.

She screamed.

Alexander rushed to her.

"Sophie!"

She collapsed.

Lily screamed:

"Sophie!"

Alexander caught her.

"What happened?"

Sophie opened her eyes.

But they weren't the same.

They were distant.

Empty.

She looked directly at Alexander.

Then whispered:

"He's awake."

Alexander froze.

"Who?"

Sophie smiled.

"Grandfather."

Elena stepped backward.

"No."

Sophie suddenly spoke in a man's voice.

"You came home, Alexander."

Everyone froze.

The voice wasn't hers.

It was old.

Cold.

Calm.

Alexander stared at her.

"Get out of her."

The voice laughed.

"You still don't understand."

"What do you want?"

"Your daughter."

"Which one?"

The voice paused.

Then answered:

"Emma."

Alexander tightened his grip around Sophie.

"You'll never have her."

"You already gave her to us."

"What?"

"Eight months ago."

Elena's face went white.

The voice continued:

"Emma was born inside the program."

Alexander looked at Elena.

"Is that true?"

She shook her head.

"I didn't know."

"You did."

"No."

"You were there."

Elena covered her ears.

"Stop."

The voice laughed.

"You signed the papers."

Alexander stared at her.

"What papers?"

"I don't remember."

"You don't remember because we erased it."

Alexander's fists clenched.

"What did you sign?"

Elena looked at him.

"I don't know."

The voice answered for her.

"Consent."

Alexander's blood ran cold.

"For what?"

"For Emma."

Sophie suddenly collapsed again.

Alexander caught her.

The lights returned to normal.

The voice disappeared.

Sophie gasped.

"Daddy..."

"I'm here."

She looked frightened.

"He was inside me."

"I know."

"He wanted Emma."

"I know."

"Don't let him take her."

"I won't."

Alexander stood.

He looked at Elena.

"Tell me everything."

"I can't."

"Yes, you can."

"I don't remember."

"Then we're going to find someone who does."

He turned toward his security chief.

"Get us out."

The man pointed toward the wall.

"Sir."

A section of the wall had opened.

Behind it was a narrow corridor.

Alexander frowned.

"Was that there before?"

"No."

Sophie whispered:

"Eden opened it."

Alexander looked down.

"Why?"

She stared into the darkness.

"Because it wants us to go inside."

"No."

Elena shook her head.

"Absolutely not."

Alexander looked at her.

"We need answers."

"We need to survive."

"We can't survive without answers."

Elena grabbed his sleeve.

"Alexander, please."

He looked at her.

She was terrified.

Not of the corridor.

Of what was at the end of it.

"What is down there?"

Elena's lips trembled.

"The nursery."

Alexander froze.

"The nursery?"

"Where they kept the children."

He looked at Lily.

She had gone silent.

"Lily?"

She nodded slowly.

"I remember."

"What?"

"The white room."

"Was it here?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"Before you forgot us."

Alexander felt sick.

"How old were you?"

"Four."

He looked toward the corridor.

His daughter had been four years old when she was brought here.

The same age as the children he had seen in the recordings.

The same age as Sophie when Eden first connected to her.

He finally understood.

This wasn't a laboratory.

It was a factory.

A factory for children.

He stepped forward.

"We're going."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

Alexander looked at her.

"I'm not leaving my children in this place."

She stared at him.

Then whispered:

"Then stay close."

They entered.

The corridor was narrow.

White walls.

Cameras every few feet.

No windows.

No doors.

Only a long hallway leading deeper underground.

They walked for several minutes.

Then Lily stopped.

"Daddy."

"What?"

She pointed.

A small red line was painted on the wall.

She touched it.

"This is where Mommy used to mark the days."

Alexander looked at Elena.

"You were here."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I was trying to rescue them."

"How many?"

"Twenty-seven."

Alexander stopped.

"Twenty-seven children?"

Elena nodded.

"Twenty-seven children were part of Eden."

"What happened to them?"

"Some died."

Alexander's face hardened.

"How many survived?"

"Seven."

He looked at Sophie.

"You were one."

"Yes."

"Lily?"

"She was supposed to be one."

Alexander stared.

"And the others?"

Elena looked toward the darkness.

"They disappeared."

The corridor ended at a huge steel door.

A keypad appeared.

Alexander stepped closer.

The screen displayed:

IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED

He tried his fingerprint.

Denied.

Retina scan.

Denied.

Voice recognition.

Denied.

Sophie stepped forward.

The screen immediately turned green.

WELCOME, SUBJECT 001.

Alexander stared.

"Subject 001?"

Sophie looked down.

"I was the first."

The door opened.

Inside was a massive nursery.

Dozens of empty cribs.

White walls.

Small toys.

Drawings.

Names.

Dates.

Photographs.

Alexander walked slowly through the room.

He saw Sophie's name.

SUBJECT 001

Then another.

SUBJECT 002

Then another.

SUBJECT 003

Lily's name was there.

SUBJECT 004

Alexander stopped.

Lily stared at it.

"I don't remember."

"You don't have to."

He covered the label with his hand.

"You're Lily."

She nodded.

Then Alexander saw something else.

A small crib at the far end.

A name was written above it.

SUBJECT 009 — EMMA

Alexander froze.

"No."

Elena walked toward it.

Her face drained of color.

"No..."

Alexander looked at her.

"She was here?"

Elena nodded.

"I didn't know."

"How could you not know?"

"I was told she died."

"When?"

"After birth."

Alexander stared.

"Who told you?"

"Victoria."

His expression hardened.

"Victoria."

He walked toward the crib.

Inside was a tiny bracelet.

Silver.

Exactly like the one Elena had described.

Alexander picked it up.

On it was a name.

EMMA CARTER

Not Blackwood.

Not another surname.

Carter.

Elena's maiden name.

Alexander looked at her.

"You said Emma wasn't supposed to exist."

"I was wrong."

"How?"

Elena began crying.

"I thought she was dead."

Alexander stared at the bracelet.

"Who switched her?"

"I don't know."

A monitor suddenly turned on.

A video began playing.

Victoria appeared.

She was younger.

Eight months earlier.

She stood in this exact nursery.

Holding Emma.

Alexander's heart stopped.

Victoria looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

She smiled.

"...then Alexander has found the nursery."

The recording continued.

"You probably think Emma was switched."

"She wasn't."

Alexander stared.

Victoria held the baby closer.

"Emma was chosen."

Elena whispered:

"No."

Victoria continued.

"She is the only child whose brain developed naturally after exposure to the Echo protocol."

Alexander frowned.

"Exposure?"

Elena's face went white.

Victoria smiled.

"Emma was never a normal baby."

The video changed.

A medical scan appeared.

A brain.

Then another.

Then Emma's.

Victoria said:

"She inherited Sophie's network."

Alexander's heart stopped.

"What?"

Victoria's voice continued:

"Except Emma doesn't need machines."

"She doesn't need wires."

"She doesn't need Eden."

"Her brain does it naturally."

Alexander looked at Emma.

The baby was sleeping peacefully.

Victoria continued:

"That's why we need her."

Alexander stepped toward the screen.

"You won't have her."

Victoria laughed.

"You still think this is about taking her."

The screen went black.

Then one final sentence appeared.

IT'S ABOUT WHAT SHE CAN REMEMBER.

Alexander stared.

"What does that mean?"

Sophie suddenly spoke.

"She remembers before she was born."

Alexander looked at her.

"How?"

Sophie pointed toward Emma.

"Because I taught her."

Alexander's blood froze.

"What?"

Sophie knelt beside Emma.

"She heard me."

"She's eight months old."

"I know."

"How could she hear you?"

Sophie touched Emma's hand.

"Because we're connected."

Emma suddenly opened her eyes.

She looked directly at Sophie.

Then smiled.

Sophie smiled back.

Alexander felt something strange.

A sense of recognition.

Emma reached toward him.

He picked her up.

The baby placed her tiny hand against his cheek.

Alexander's vision blurred.

For one second...

he saw a memory that wasn't his.

A hospital.

Victoria.

A doctor.

A newborn baby.

Then Elena.

Standing outside a glass room.

Crying.

Alexander gasped.

He nearly dropped Emma.

Elena caught his arm.

"What did you see?"

He stared at her.

"I saw the hospital."

"What hospital?"

"The night Emma was born."

Elena froze.

"You couldn't have."

"I did."

"What did you see?"

"Victoria."

Elena covered her mouth.

"What was she doing?"

"She was holding Emma."

Elena shook her head.

"That's impossible."

Alexander closed his eyes.

Another flash.

Victoria handing the baby to a doctor.

The doctor saying:

"Subject Nine is stable."

Victoria answering:

"Good."

Then another voice.

His father.

"Does Alexander know?"

Victoria:

"No."

His father:

"He cannot know."

Victoria:

"He won't."

Then a final memory.

Victoria looking down at the baby.

And whispering:

"You're the one who will destroy him."

Alexander opened his eyes.

"She knew."

Elena stared.

"Knew what?"

"That Emma would expose everything."

A sound came from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Old.

Gray hair.

Calm expression.

Alexander recognized him.

His grandfather.

Or what remained of him.

He smiled.

"Finally."

Alexander raised his weapon.

"You."

The old man spread his hands.

"You have become exactly what I predicted."

"What do you want?"

"The same thing I've always wanted."

"Power?"

"No."

He looked at Emma.

"Continuity."

Alexander stepped between them.

"You'll never touch her."

The old man smiled.

"You're still thinking like a father."

"What else should I think like?"

"An engineer."

"I am not like you."

"That's where you're wrong."

He pointed toward Alexander.

"You created Eden."

Alexander shook his head.

"No."

"You did."

"I destroyed it."

"You destroyed the first version."

The old man smiled.

"Then you built the second."

Alexander froze.

"What?"

"Emma."

Silence.

The old man continued:

"She is your creation."

Alexander stared at the baby.

"That's impossible."

"You designed the genetic sequence."

Elena stepped forward.

"No."

The old man looked at her.

"You signed the agreement."

"I didn't."

"You did."

He looked toward Alexander.

"She was created using your DNA and Elena's."

Alexander stared.

"Then why does she have the network?"

"Because of Sophie."

"What did you do?"

"We transferred the neural architecture."

Alexander's expression became horrified.

"You experimented on my unborn daughter."

"No."

The old man smiled.

"We perfected her."

Alexander fired.

The bullet struck the wall beside the man's head.

He didn't flinch.

"Kill me if you want."

He pointed toward the nursery.

"But you cannot kill what you've already created."

Then the lights went out.

When they returned...

the old man was gone.

And Emma was no longer in Alexander's arms.

He spun around.

"EMMA!"

The nursery was empty.

Lily screamed.

"SOMEONE TOOK HER!"

Alexander's heart stopped.

Security rushed through the room.

Doors slammed.

Footsteps echoed.

Then a child's voice came through the speakers.

Sophie's voice.

But it wasn't Sophie.

It was the old man's.

"Come find her, Alexander."

Alexander looked at the cameras.

The screen showed Emma lying peacefully in a white crib.

Beside her stood Victoria.

She looked directly into the camera.

Then she smiled.

"Welcome to the final experiment."

Alexander's face hardened.

"Victoria!"

She leaned closer to the camera.

"And now..."

She whispered:

"...you'll finally learn why Emma was born."

The screen went black.

Alexander stood frozen.

Then Lily grabbed his hand.

"Daddy."

He looked down.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

"Bring my sister back."

Alexander knelt.

"I will."

"No matter what?"

"No matter what."

Sophie stepped beside them.

"And I know where she is."

Alexander looked at her.

"Where?"

Sophie pointed toward the floor.

"Below the nursery."

Alexander frowned.

"There is another level?"

Sophie nodded.

"Grandfather never showed you."

"How do you know?"

She looked at him.

"Because I remember."

Alexander stood.

"Then let's go."

They found the hidden elevator.

It descended.

One floor.

Two.

Three.

Then stopped at a level that didn't appear on any blueprint.

The doors opened.

A vast underground chamber stretched before them.

At the center stood a glass room.

Emma was inside.

Victoria stood beside her.

Alexander stepped forward.

Victoria smiled.

"You came."

Alexander's voice was cold.

"Let her go."

Victoria shook her head.

"You still don't understand."

"What?"

"Emma isn't the victim."

"Then what is she?"

Victoria looked through the glass.

"The key."

"The key to what?"

She turned toward him.

"Everything."

Behind her, hundreds of monitors activated.

Every screen displayed the same image.

Emma.

Then another image.

Alexander.

Then Sophie.

Then Lily.

The three children were connected.

Victoria smiled.

"Your family was never an accident."

Alexander stared.

"What are you saying?"

Victoria leaned toward the glass.

"Your father planned this."

"Your grandfather perfected it."

"And you..."

She smiled.

"...were the final piece."

Alexander felt the world shift.

"Me?"

Victoria nodded.

"You were never the victim, Alexander."

"You were the architect."

The glass chamber began filling with light.

Emma opened her eyes.

The baby looked directly at Alexander.

And for the first time...

she spoke.

One word.

"Daddy."

Alexander's heart stopped.

Because Emma wasn't supposed to be able to speak.

And when she said that word...

every machine in the facility turned on at once.

Victoria smiled.

May you like

"Now you understand."

The final experiment had begun.
