CHAPTER 1 — THE GIRL WHO STOPPED THE WEDDING

The little girl stood in the middle of the aisle.

Bare feet.

Dirty dress.

Tangled hair.

A crying baby pressed tightly against her chest.

And two hundred of the richest people in the city were staring at her.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

The wedding music had stopped so abruptly that the silence afterward felt almost violent.

Above them, hundreds of crystal chandeliers reflected against polished marble floors.

White roses lined the aisle.

Gold-rimmed tables glittered beneath soft candlelight.

A ten-tier wedding cake stood near the ballroom windows.

Everything had been designed to look perfect.

Everything except the child standing in the middle of it.

She looked like she had walked out of another world.

A world of hunger.

Cold nights.

Fear.

And secrets.

The bride was the first person to break the silence.

Her lips curled with disgust.

"Get her out."

The little girl flinched.

The bride's voice became sharper.

"I said get that filthy child out of my wedding!"

Several guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

A security guard stepped forward.

The little girl immediately backed away.

"No."

Her voice was barely audible.

The guard stopped.

She tightened her arms around the baby.

The toddler was crying against her shoulder, tiny fingers gripping the dirty fabric of her dress.

"Please."

The girl's eyes darted around the room.

"Don't take her."

Something about those words made the ballroom uncomfortable.

She wasn't afraid of being thrown outside.

She was afraid someone would take the baby.

The groom finally moved.

Slowly.

Almost involuntarily.

He stepped away from the altar.

His name was Alexander Blackwood.

Thirty-eight years old.

Billionaire.

Founder and CEO of Blackwood International.

A man whose name appeared regularly on magazine covers.

A man politicians wanted beside them.

A man businessmen feared crossing.

A man who had spent years building an empire from nothing.

And a man who was supposed to marry the most influential socialite in the city that afternoon.

Victoria Harrington.

The bride.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Perfect.

At least according to every magazine.

Alexander stared at the little girl.

Something about her face bothered him.

Not because he recognized her.

Because he almost did.

Her eyes.

Her mouth.

The slight crease between her eyebrows.

There was something disturbingly familiar about her.

Victoria noticed his expression.

She stepped closer.

"Alexander."

He didn't respond.

"Alexander."

He finally looked at her.

"What?"

"Don't."

Her voice was low.

Almost a warning.

He frowned.

"Don't what?"

"Don't let this ruin today."

He looked back at the girl.

"Who is she?"

Victoria's face changed.

Only for a second.

But Alexander saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

Then it disappeared.

"I have no idea."

The little girl heard her.

She shook her head.

"That's not true."

Victoria stiffened.

The ballroom erupted into whispers.

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

"Come here."

The little girl froze.

She looked at him.

Then at the baby.

Then slowly took one step forward.

"What's your name?"

She swallowed.

"Lily."

"Lily what?"

She hesitated.

"Lily Carter."

Alexander felt something twist inside his chest.

Carter.

The name meant nothing.

Or at least it shouldn't have.

He had never known a Carter.

He had no daughter.

He had no children.

He had never been married.

That was what everyone knew.

But Lily was looking at him as if she knew him.

As if she had been waiting for this moment.

Alexander crouched slightly.

"Where is your mother?"

Lily's lower lip trembled.

"She told me to find you."

"Who?"

"My mommy."

"Where is she?"

Lily looked toward the ballroom doors.

"She couldn't come."

"Why?"

The girl lowered her eyes.

"She said they would stop her."

Alexander's face hardened.

"Who would stop her?"

Lily didn't answer.

Victoria stepped forward.

"Enough."

Alexander looked at her.

"Victoria."

"This is ridiculous."

She turned toward security.

"Remove them."

The guard approached.

Lily screamed.

"No!"

The baby began crying louder.

Lily stumbled backward.

"Don't touch us!"

The guard stopped.

Alexander saw the terror in her face.

Not ordinary fear.

Not fear of strangers.

The kind of terror children developed after learning that adults couldn't be trusted.

He raised his hand.

"Everyone stop."

The room went silent again.

Victoria stared at him.

"Alexander—"

"I said stop."

He walked toward Lily.

He removed his jacket.

Then slowly placed it around her shoulders.

The little girl stared at him.

"You must be cold."

She nodded.

Alexander looked at the baby.

"What's her name?"

"Emma."

"How old is she?"

"Eight months."

"Where have you been staying?"

Lily looked down.

"Different places."

His jaw tightened.

"Where?"

"Wherever we could."

The answer broke something inside him.

He looked at Victoria.

"How did she get here?"

Victoria shook her head.

"I told you. I don't know."

Lily suddenly looked at her.

"You know."

Victoria's face went white.

Alexander noticed.

"What does she mean?"

"She's confused."

Lily shook her head.

"You told Mommy Daddy would never find us."

The room exploded.

Whispers.

Gasps.

Someone dropped a glass.

Alexander stared at Victoria.

"What did she just say?"

Victoria's lips parted.

No words came.

Lily looked directly at Alexander.

Then she whispered:

"Daddy."

Everything stopped.

Alexander felt as though the floor had disappeared.

The word echoed through the ballroom.

Daddy.

Someone in the crowd gasped.

Another guest whispered:

"Is that his daughter?"

Victoria immediately snapped:

"She's lying!"

Lily flinched.

Alexander looked at Victoria.

"Why would a child lie about that?"

"Because someone told her to!"

"Who?"

"I don't know!"

"Then why are you so afraid?"

Victoria froze.

Alexander looked back at Lily.

"How old are you?"

"Five."

Five.

He stared at her.

Five years old.

His mind began calculating.

Five years ago...

He had been twenty-nine.

He had been in London.

He remembered the year.

He remembered the woman.

A woman he had loved.

A woman who had disappeared without explanation.

A woman named Elena Carter.

His first love.

The woman he had spent months searching for.

The woman everyone told him had abandoned him.

He had believed she was dead.

Or that she had simply chosen another life.

But Lily had her eyes.

No.

Not just her eyes.

Her entire expression.

Alexander whispered:

"Elena."

Lily looked up.

"You remember Mommy."

His heart stopped.

"How do you know that name?"

"Because she talks about you."

"Where is she?"

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"She's sick."

Alexander's face changed.

"What's wrong with her?"

Lily shook her head.

"She told me not to tell."

"Tell me."

"She said you'd come."

"Where?"

"At the hospital."

Alexander stood.

"What hospital?"

Lily opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, Victoria grabbed her wrist.

"That's enough."

The child cried out.

Alexander immediately pulled Victoria's hand away.

"Don't touch her."

Victoria stared at him.

"I was only—"

"Don't."

His voice was colder now.

The man who had spent the last hour smiling politely for photographs was gone.

Something else had taken his place.

Something protective.

Something dangerous.

He looked at Lily.

"Tell me where your mother is."

Lily pointed toward the doors.

"She told me if you didn't believe me..."

She reached inside the pocket of her torn dress.

And pulled out an envelope.

She held it toward him.

"Give this to Daddy."

Alexander took it.

His name was written on the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

In a script he hadn't seen in years.

His heart began pounding.

He knew that handwriting.

Elena.

He tore open the envelope.

Inside was one photograph.

He unfolded it.

And the world stopped.

The photograph showed Elena.

Five years younger.

Holding Lily as a newborn.

And beside her...

was Alexander.

He was asleep.

A hospital bracelet was wrapped around his wrist.

The date was visible.

Five years ago.

On the back of the photograph were six words:

YOU WERE THERE. YOU JUST DON'T REMEMBER.

Alexander stared at it.

He couldn't breathe.

"What is this?"

Lily whispered:

"Mommy said you'd forget."

He looked at her.

"Forget what?"

The girl started crying.

"That you have two daughters."

Alexander's fingers went numb.

"Two?"

Lily nodded.

She looked down at the baby in her arms.

"Me."

Then she kissed the baby's forehead.

"And Emma."

Alexander stared at the crying infant.

His daughter.

Possibly.

He looked at the photograph again.

The hospital.

The date.

His own face.

He remembered nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

Victoria suddenly stepped toward him.

"Alexander, give me the photograph."

He looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because this is obviously fake."

"You recognized it."

She froze.

"What?"

"You recognized the hospital."

Victoria's expression changed.

He stepped closer.

"How?"

"I didn't."

"You just said it was fake."

"Because it is."

"Then how did you know what was in it?"

Victoria said nothing.

Alexander's voice dropped.

"What are you hiding?"

She looked around.

The guests were watching.

Phones were already coming out.

Someone was recording.

Victoria's perfect public image was beginning to crack.

She leaned toward him.

"Don't do this here."

"You brought this here."

"No."

She whispered:

"You don't understand what will happen if you keep asking questions."

Alexander stared at her.

"Is that a threat?"

"No."

"Then what is it?"

Victoria looked at Lily.

For the first time, Alexander saw genuine fear in her eyes.

"It's a warning."

Before he could respond, Lily suddenly screamed.

"Mommy said not to let Victoria find Emma!"

Everyone froze.

Alexander turned.

Victoria's face became completely white.

"What did you say?"

Lily hugged the baby tighter.

"She said Victoria would take her."

Victoria stepped backward.

"That's insane."

Alexander looked at her.

"Why would Elena say that?"

"I don't know!"

"Why does your name keep coming up?"

"I don't know!"

"Why are you afraid of my daughter?"

"I'm not!"

The answer came too quickly.

Alexander heard it.

So did everyone else.

He stepped closer.

"My daughter."

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"Alexander..."

"My daughter."

She whispered:

"You have no idea what you're doing."

"Then tell me."

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because..."

She stopped.

The ballroom doors suddenly opened.

A man in a dark suit rushed inside.

He whispered something into Victoria's ear.

Her expression changed instantly.

Alexander noticed.

"What happened?"

The man looked at him.

Then at Lily.

Then at the baby.

He said nothing.

Victoria grabbed his arm.

"Get her out."

Alexander stepped between them.

"Nobody is taking my daughter."

The man reached inside his jacket.

Alexander reacted instantly.

He grabbed his wrist.

The man's weapon hit the marble floor.

A scream came from the guests.

Security rushed forward.

Alexander kicked the weapon away.

"Call the police!"

The man fought back.

Alexander slammed him against a pillar.

"Who sent you?"

The man laughed.

"You should have stayed at the altar."

Alexander tightened his grip.

"Who sent you?"

The man looked at Lily.

"She's not supposed to be alive."

Alexander's blood ran cold.

"What?"

The man smiled.

"Neither is her mother."

Then he bit down.

His body went limp.

Alexander released him.

"Call an ambulance!"

But the man's eyes were already empty.

Dead.

The ballroom erupted into chaos.

Guests screamed.

Security rushed everyone toward the exits.

Victoria disappeared into the crowd.

Alexander turned toward Lily.

She was crying.

Emma was screaming.

He dropped to his knees.

"It's okay."

Lily stared at him.

"Are you really Daddy?"

Alexander swallowed.

He looked at the photograph.

Then at the child.

Then at the baby.

"I don't know."

Lily's face crumpled.

He immediately corrected himself.

"But I'm going to find out."

She stared at him.

"And if I am?"

He held out his arms.

"Then nobody will ever take you away from me again."

Lily slowly stepped into his arms.

Alexander held her.

The child buried her face against his chest.

For the first time in five years...

Alexander felt something he couldn't explain.

Recognition.

Not of the child.

Of the moment.

A memory.

A hospital room.

Elena crying.

A newborn crying beside her.

Someone shouting:

"Erase his memory!"

Alexander suddenly gasped.

His eyes widened.

He remembered a needle.

A machine.

A woman standing beside the bed.

Victoria.

He looked across the ballroom.

She was gone.

His phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY YOU FORGOT YOUR DAUGHTERS, COME TO SAINT MARTHA HOSPITAL. ALONE.

Alexander stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

Elena.

Alive.

Standing in a hospital corridor.

Her face thinner.

Her hair shorter.

But unmistakably her.

Underneath the photograph was one final sentence:

SHE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR YOU FOR FIVE YEARS.

Alexander looked at Lily.

Then at Emma.

Then at the ballroom where his wedding had been destroyed.

The wedding no longer mattered.

The bride no longer mattered.

The guests no longer mattered.

There was only one thing that mattered now.

Finding Elena.

And discovering why someone had stolen five years of his life.

He picked up Lily.

"Come on."

She wrapped her arms around his neck.

"Where are we going?"

Alexander looked toward the exit.

"To find your mother."

But as he walked out of the ballroom carrying both children, he didn't notice the woman standing behind a half-open service door.

Victoria.

Watching him leave.

She held a phone against her ear.

Her voice trembled.

"He found them."

A man's voice answered through the phone.

"Then we move tonight."

"What about Alexander?"

"Let him find Elena."

Victoria swallowed.

"And the girls?"

The voice went cold.

"Especially the girls."

Victoria closed her eyes.

"And if he remembers?"

There was a long silence.

Then the man answered:

"Then we kill him before he remembers everything."

Victoria lowered the phone.

May you like

And for the first time...

she began to cry.
