CHAPTER 3 — THE GIRL IN THE LOCKED ROOM

The armored vehicle disappeared into the night.
Rain began striking the windshield.
Inside the vehicle, nobody spoke.
Alexander sat beside Elena, one hand pressed firmly against the bandage covering her wound.
Across from him, Lily held baby Emma close.
The little girl hadn't spoken since they left the hospital.
She simply watched her father.
As if she were trying to decide whether she could finally trust him.
Alexander understood.
He couldn't blame her.
Five years was a lifetime to a child.
For five years, Lily had lived without him.
For five years, she had moved from one place to another, carrying a baby sister who should never have been her responsibility.
And for five years, Alexander had believed he had no children.
Now he knew that wasn't the worst part.
The worst part was what Elena had just told him.
Sophie.
His other daughter.
A child he had apparently forgotten.
A child who was still inside the old Blackwood estate.
A child who had just said:
He's coming home.
Alexander stared through the rain-covered window.
The estate was less than forty minutes away.
He had not been there in nine years.
Not since the night his father died.
Not since the last time Alexander had seen the laboratory beneath the house.
Not since the night everything he remembered about his own life had apparently been changed.
He turned toward Elena.
She was unconscious again.
Her breathing was shallow.
"How bad is she?" Alexander asked.
The security chief sitting opposite him shook his head.
"The bullet passed through her side. She's losing blood, but she's stable."
"Take her to the estate."
The man stared at him.
"Sir?"
"We need answers."
"We need a hospital."
"No."
"Sir—"
"Every hospital is compromised."
The man hesitated.
Alexander's voice hardened.
"Take us to the estate."
"Yes, sir."
Lily suddenly spoke.
"Daddy?"
Alexander turned.
"Yes?"
"Is Mommy going to die?"
His chest tightened.
"No."
"You promise?"
Alexander looked at Elena.
Then back at Lily.
"I promise I'm going to do everything I can."
Lily nodded.
Then she whispered:
"That's what Mommy always said."
Alexander swallowed.
"What?"
"She always said you would come."
"When?"
"Every night."
"Why?"
Lily looked down.
"Because she knew you didn't forget us on purpose."
Alexander stared at her.
"What does that mean?"
Lily didn't answer.
She only held Emma tighter.
The vehicle continued through the rain.
Twenty minutes later, the trees became thicker.
The road narrowed.
The city disappeared behind them.
Then the old Blackwood estate appeared through the darkness.
Alexander's breath caught.
The iron gates were still standing.
The stone walls were covered in vines.
The mansion looked exactly as he remembered.
Except for one thing.
There was a light on upstairs.
One single window.
Third floor.
Alexander stared at it.
"Stop."
The driver braked.
Everyone looked at him.
"There's someone inside."
His security chief checked the thermal scanner.
"Sir, I'm detecting movement."
"How many?"
"One."
Alexander looked at Lily.
"Stay here."
She grabbed his sleeve.
"No."
"You'll be safer in the vehicle."
"No."
"Lily—"
"I know where she is."
Alexander froze.
"Who?"
"Sophie."
He stared at his daughter.
"How?"
Lily looked toward the house.
"She told me."
"When?"
"Before I came here."
"What did she tell you?"
Lily's voice became very quiet.
"She said you wouldn't remember her."
Alexander felt a chill.
"Did you meet her?"
Lily nodded.
"Once."
"Where?"
"At the house."
"What house?"
"Before Mommy moved us."
Alexander's expression hardened.
"You lived here?"
"For a little while."
"When?"
Lily shrugged.
"I don't remember."
Alexander looked at Elena.
She was still unconscious.
His mind raced.
Why would Elena bring the children to this house?
Why would Sophie still be there?
And why had his father created a system that could erase memories?
He opened the vehicle door.
"Everyone stays together."
The security team surrounded them.
Alexander carried Emma.
Lily held his hand.
They approached the mansion.
The front door opened before they reached it.
Nobody was standing there.
Alexander stopped.
"Did anyone unlock it?"
"No."
The security chief checked the electronic system.
"System is offline."
Alexander stared into the darkness.
Then Lily whispered:
"She opened it."
"Who?"
"Sophie."
The little girl stepped inside.
Alexander followed.
The hallway smelled like dust and old wood.
Everything was exactly as he remembered.
The grandfather clock.
The staircase.
The portraits.
His father's portrait above the fireplace.
Alexander looked at it.
For a second, something strange happened.
The portrait seemed to move.
Not physically.
In his memory.
He saw his father standing beneath it.
Holding a little girl.
A child with dark hair.
Alexander blinked.
The image vanished.
"Daddy?"
Lily tugged his hand.
He looked down.
"What?"
"You're crying."
Alexander touched his cheek.
She was right.
He hadn't even realized.
"Do you know where Sophie is?"
Lily nodded.
"Upstairs."
They climbed.
The security team followed.
Third floor.
The corridor was dark.
Alexander remembered this hallway.
There had been no bedrooms here when he was a child.
Only storage rooms.
At least that's what he remembered.
Lily stopped.
She pointed toward the last door.
"That one."
Alexander approached.
The door was locked.
He tried the handle.
Nothing.
"Move."
The security chief stepped forward.
He forced the lock.
The door opened.
Inside was a child's bedroom.
Alexander froze.
The room was perfectly preserved.
A small bed.
Stuffed animals.
Books.
A night-light.
Pictures on the wall.
And photographs.
Hundreds of them.
Alexander walked inside.
Every photograph showed the same little girl.
Sophie.
Age two.
Age three.
Age four.
Age five.
Age six.
Age seven.
She grew older in every picture.
But the last photograph was dated only three months earlier.
Alexander picked it up.
Sophie stood beside the fireplace.
Older.
Perhaps ten years old.
Her eyes were unmistakably his.
He whispered:
"She's alive."
Lily nodded.
"I told you."
Alexander turned.
"Where is she?"
Lily pointed toward the bed.
"She was there."
Alexander looked underneath.
Nothing.
He checked the closet.
Empty.
Bathroom.
Empty.
He searched the entire room.
No Sophie.
Then he noticed something.
A small wooden box sat beneath the bed.
He pulled it out.
There was a note taped to the top.
His name.
ALEXANDER.
He opened it.
Inside was a child's drawing.
Three girls.
Standing beside a man.
Underneath were four words.
WE WERE A FAMILY ONCE.
Alexander's hands shook.
There was another note.
YOU PROMISED TO COME BACK.
And another.
YOU NEVER DID.
And another.
SO I WAITED.
Alexander sat on the floor.
Lily approached.
"Daddy?"
He couldn't answer.
He remembered.
Not everything.
Fragments.
A birthday.
A little girl laughing.
A red balloon.
A woman singing.
A baby.
His father screaming.
A machine.
Then a voice.
His own voice.
"Erase me."
Alexander gasped.
Lily stepped closer.
"What happened?"
"I asked them."
"Asked who?"
"To erase my memory."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
He looked at the photographs.
"Not yet."
A sound came from behind them.
A soft click.
The bedroom door closed.
Everyone turned.
The security chief reached for the handle.
Locked.
Then a girl's voice came through the darkness.
"Hello, Daddy."
Alexander stopped breathing.
The voice was calm.
Too calm.
For a child.
"Who are you?"
A small figure stepped from behind the curtains.
She was about ten years old.
Dark hair.
Pale skin.
Brown eyes.
She wore a simple gray sweater.
She looked at Alexander.
Then at Lily.
Then at Emma.
And smiled.
"Lily."
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
"Sophie."
The girls stared at each other.
Alexander couldn't move.
Sophie walked closer.
"You finally came."
Alexander swallowed.
"How long have you been here?"
She shrugged.
"Since I was four."
"Alone?"
"No."
"Who was with you?"
Sophie looked toward the wall.
"Grandfather."
Alexander's blood froze.
"Your grandfather is dead."
She smiled.
"That's what they told you."
The security chief immediately moved toward her.
Alexander raised his hand.
"Don't."
Sophie looked at him.
"You don't believe me."
"I don't know what to believe."
"That's because they took your memories."
"Who?"
Sophie smiled.
"Everyone."
Alexander stepped closer.
"Tell me the truth."
"I am."
"Where is your grandfather?"
Sophie pointed toward the floor.
"Below us."
The room went silent.
Alexander stared at the floor.
"There's another laboratory."
Sophie nodded.
"He never left."
Alexander's voice dropped.
"How do we get there?"
She walked toward the bookshelf.
Pulled out a red book.
A section of the wall opened.
The security team immediately raised their weapons.
Alexander stared at the hidden passage.
"How did you know that?"
Sophie shrugged.
"Grandfather taught me."
"Your grandfather taught you how to open secret doors?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because he said one day you would come back."
Alexander stepped into the passage.
The air was cold.
The walls were lined with old cables.
Sophie followed.
Lily followed her.
Alexander carried Emma.
The security team brought up the rear.
The staircase descended deeper than Alexander remembered.
Much deeper.
They passed one level.
Then another.
Then another.
Finally, they reached a steel door.
Sophie entered a code.
The door opened.
Alexander stepped inside.
The laboratory was still operational.
Lights flickered.
Machines hummed.
Screens displayed brain scans.
And in the center of the room stood a glass chamber.
Alexander stared.
Someone was inside.
An elderly man.
Connected to dozens of wires.
Alexander's heart stopped.
He knew that face.
His father.
Older.
Paler.
But alive.
Impossible.
The man opened his eyes.
"Alexander."
Alexander raised his weapon.
"No."
The man smiled.
"You came home."
Alexander's voice trembled.
"You're dead."
"I was."
"What happened?"
"Your father died."
Alexander stared.
"But I'm your father."
The words hit him like a physical blow.
The man continued:
"Your grandfather took control of my body."
Alexander shook his head.
"You're lying."
"No."
"Then who am I?"
The man looked at him.
"You're the son I tried to save."
Alexander's breathing became shallow.
"Why did you erase my memory?"
"Because you asked me to."
"Why?"
"Because you saw what Sophie saw."
Alexander looked at the girl.
She stood silently.
"What did she see?"
His father looked toward Sophie.
"The truth."
"What truth?"
The old man sighed.
"Your grandfather didn't create Project Echo to control people."
"Then why?"
"To save someone."
"Who?"
The man's eyes moved toward Emma.
"Her."
Alexander froze.
"Emma?"
"No."
Sophie shook her head.
"Not Emma."
She pointed toward herself.
"Me."
Alexander stared at her.
His father nodded.
"Sophie was born with a neurological condition."
"What condition?"
"Her brain was slowly shutting down."
Alexander looked at Sophie.
She didn't look sick.
But there was sadness in her eyes.
"We tried everything."
His father continued.
"Medication."
"Surgery."
"Experimental therapy."
"Nothing worked."
"So Grandfather created Echo?"
"Yes."
"To preserve her memories."
"At first."
"What changed?"
"Power."
His father's voice became bitter.
"Your grandfather realized that if memories could be preserved..."
"They could be copied."
"If they could be copied..."
"They could be transferred."
Alexander understood.
"He wanted immortality."
"Yes."
"And Sophie?"
"She became his first successful subject."
Alexander looked at Sophie.
"How old were you?"
"Four."
He closed his eyes.
The little girl from his memories.
The red balloon.
The birthday cake.
The laughter.
She had been the beginning.
His father continued:
"Your grandfather transferred part of his consciousness into Sophie."
Alexander stared.
"That's why she remembers everything."
"Yes."
"She carries his memories."
"Not only his."
"Whose?"
"Everyone who was connected to Echo."
Alexander looked at Sophie.
"How?"
"She became the archive."
Sophie smiled sadly.
"They put everything inside me."
Alexander felt sick.
"Why would they do that to a child?"
His father answered:
"Because children are easier to control."
The room fell silent.
Lily hugged Emma tighter.
Alexander's hands tightened into fists.
"Where is Grandfather now?"
His father looked toward the glass chamber.
"He is here."
Alexander stared.
"Inside you?"
The old man nodded.
"Part of him."
"How much?"
"Enough."
Suddenly every screen in the laboratory turned black.
Then one sentence appeared.
WELCOME HOME, ALEXANDER.
The lights went out.
Sophie grabbed Lily's hand.
"Daddy."
Alexander looked at her.
"What?"
"He knows you're here."
A voice came through the speakers.
Calm.
Old.
Familiar.
"Alexander."
He froze.
His grandfather.
The voice continued.
"You finally remembered."
Alexander raised his weapon toward the speakers.
"Show yourself."
A soft laugh echoed through the laboratory.
"You still think this is about me."
Alexander's blood ran cold.
"Then what is it about?"
The voice answered:
"Your daughters."
Every screen turned on.
Images appeared.
Lily.
Emma.
Sophie.
Then another child.
A boy.
Then another.
And another.
Dozens.
Hundreds.
Children.
All connected to machines.
Alexander stared in horror.
"What is this?"
His father whispered:
"The next generation."
Alexander looked at him.
"You said Echo was destroyed."
"It was."
"Then what is this?"
His father looked toward Sophie.
"Project Eden."
The voice laughed.
"Eden was never destroyed."
Alexander felt his blood run cold.
"Where is Eden?"
The answer came through every speaker.
"Inside your daughter."
Alexander looked at Sophie.
She was crying.
"I told you."
"What?"
She wiped her tears.
"Grandfather never left."
Then the glass chamber behind Alexander opened.
His father's body suddenly collapsed.
The machines began screaming.
Alarms filled the laboratory.
Red lights flashed.
Alexander grabbed Lily.
"Everybody move!"
Sophie stood frozen.
Alexander reached for her.
"Come on!"
She shook her head.
"I can't."
"Why?"
"I'm connected."
Alexander looked at the wires.
Something was attached to the back of her neck.
He tried to pull it away.
Sophie screamed.
"Don't!"
"Why?"
"It will kill everyone."
Alexander stopped.
"What?"
She pointed toward the screens.
"Those children."
"How?"
"They're connected to me."
Alexander stared.
One network.
Hundreds of minds.
One central consciousness.
Sophie.
He finally understood why she had been hidden.
Why they had kept her alive.
Why she was so important.
She wasn't merely a victim.
She was the key.
His grandfather's final creation.
A living network.
Alexander looked at Sophie.
"We're getting you out."
She shook her head.
"You can't."
"I can."
"Then everyone dies."
"No."
"You don't understand."
"I understand enough."
Alexander looked at the control panel.
"We disconnect the network."
Sophie stared at him.
"That would kill me."
Alexander froze.
Lily stepped forward.
"No."
Sophie smiled at her.
"It's okay."
Lily shook her head.
"No."
"You have to go."
"I won't leave you."
Sophie looked at her.
"That's what sisters do."
Lily started crying.
Alexander looked between them.
Then he remembered.
The hospital.
Elena.
The photograph.
The memory.
His father's warning.
He suddenly understood the real reason his memory had been erased.
It wasn't to hide what had happened.
It was to hide what he had chosen.
Alexander walked toward the main console.
His father had once told him:
"You asked me to erase your memory."
Now he understood why.
Because Alexander had volunteered.
He had volunteered to become the final key.
His brain was the only one compatible with Sophie's network.
If he connected himself...
he could free every child.
But he might never come back.
Sophie looked at him.
"You remember."
Alexander nodded.
"I do."
"What are you going to do?"
He looked at Lily.
Then Emma.
Then Sophie.
"I'm going to finish what I started."
He sat in the chair.
The machine activated.
Sophie screamed:
"No!"
Alexander looked at her.
"Trust me."
The cables connected.
His vision blurred.
Thousands of memories entered his mind.
Children crying.
Doctors shouting.
Machines humming.
His grandfather laughing.
His father begging.
Elena holding newborn Lily.
Elena holding baby Emma.
Sophie sitting alone.
Lily waiting by a window.
Five years of stolen lives.
Five years of lies.
Then one final memory.
Alexander standing beside his father.
"You have to erase me."
His father was crying.
"If I do this, you'll forget them."
"I know."
"You'll forget Elena."
"I know."
"You'll forget your daughters."
Alexander had looked at the sleeping baby Lily.
Then at Elena.
"I'll forget."
"Why?"
"Because if I remember..."
He looked toward the laboratory.
"...they'll use me."
His father nodded.
"So you want me to erase everything?"
"Yes."
"And if you ever remember?"
Alexander had smiled.
"Then I'll know it is time to come home."
The memory shattered.
Alexander opened his eyes.
He was back in the laboratory.
The network was collapsing.
One screen after another went dark.
The children were disconnecting.
Sophie screamed.
Then silence.
The machine stopped.
Alexander fell from the chair.
Lily ran toward him.
"Daddy!"
He opened his eyes.
She grabbed his face.
"Are you okay?"
He looked at her.
For a second, he didn't know who she was.
Then he smiled.
"Lily."
She cried.
"You remember!"
"Yes."
Sophie stood nearby.
She looked confused.
"What happened?"
Alexander stood.
"The network is gone."
She touched the back of her neck.
The cables had detached.
She was free.
For the first time in six years...
Sophie was free.
Then a voice came from behind them.
"Not yet."
Everyone turned.
Victoria stood at the laboratory entrance.
She held a gun.
Her wedding dress was stained with blood.
Her face was emotionless.
Alexander stared.
"You."
Victoria smiled.
"You always were difficult to control."
Lily stepped behind Alexander.
Victoria raised the weapon.
"Give me the girls."
Alexander stood between them.
"No."
Victoria's eyes hardened.
"You don't understand."
"I understand everything now."
She shook her head.
"You don't."
She pointed the gun toward Sophie.
"Because she's not your daughter."
Alexander froze.
"What?"
Victoria smiled.
"Ask Elena."
Alexander stared at her.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Victoria's voice became cold.
"Only one of those girls is yours."
Silence.
Lily looked terrified.
Emma began crying.
Sophie stared at Alexander.
Victoria slowly raised the gun.
"And I'm the only person who knows which one."
A gunshot echoed through the laboratory.
Alexander lunged forward.
The lights exploded.
And when they came back on...
Victoria was gone.
But on the floor beside her abandoned weapon was a bloodstained envelope.
Alexander picked it up.
His name was written on the front.
Inside was a single photograph.
Elena.
Victoria.
And a newborn baby.
On the back were five words:
THE WRONG BABY CAME HOME.
Alexander stared at the photograph.
His entire world shifted again.
Because after everything they had survived...
May you like
the biggest secret had not yet been revealed.
One of his daughters might not be his daughter at all.
