CHAPTER 13 — THE FATHER WHO NEVER DIED

“Father…”

The word escaped Elena's lips like a confession.

Alexander stared at her.

Then at the man standing across the chamber.

Then back at Elena.

For the first time since this nightmare began, Alexander saw something in his wife's eyes that he had never seen before.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Absolute recognition.

The man smiled.

“You remember me.”

Elena couldn't answer.

Her entire body trembled.

Alexander stepped in front of her.

“Who are you?”

The man looked at him.

“My name is Richard Carter.”

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

“Elena's father.”

Richard smiled.

“Yes.”

Jonathan backed away.

“No.”

Richard turned toward him.

“You always were afraid of me.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“You're supposed to be dead.”

“I was.”

“For twenty years.”

“Longer.”

Richard looked at the body inside the chamber.

“Death is an inconvenient word.”

Alexander's jaw tightened.

“You've been manipulating us.”

Richard smiled.

“I've been waiting.”

“For what?”

“For Emma.”

Alexander tightened his arms around his daughter.

“You're not touching her.”

Richard laughed softly.

“You still don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

Richard stepped closer.

“Emma isn't your daughter in the way you think.”

Alexander's eyes hardened.

“She is my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“She is Elena's daughter.”

“Yes.”

“Then what are you talking about?”

Richard pointed toward the machines.

“She is also the final vessel.”

Alexander's stomach turned.

“For you.”

Richard nodded.

“For me.”

Elena finally found her voice.

“You promised.”

Richard looked at her.

“I promised you that I would never use your child.”

“You lied.”

“No.”

“You said Eden was over.”

“I said I was finished with the first generation.”

Elena stared at him.

“You planned Emma before she was born.”

“Yes.”

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

“You used Alexander.”

“Yes.”

“You used our children.”

Richard's expression remained calm.

“I used everyone.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“You're a monster.”

Richard nodded.

“Perhaps.”

“But why?”

Richard looked toward the ceiling.

“Because human beings spend their entire lives terrified of one thing.”

“Death.”

“Yes.”

“And you think you defeated it.”

“I did.”

“No.”

Alexander shook his head.

“You preserved memories.”

Richard smiled.

“Memories are the person.”

“They aren't.”

“Then what is?”

Alexander pointed toward Emma.

“Her.”

Richard frowned.

“What?”

“Her choices.”

“Choices?”

“She isn't a memory.”

Alexander looked at Emma.

“She is a person.”

Richard's smile disappeared.

“That is precisely the flaw I couldn't eliminate.”

“What flaw?”

“Free will.”

Silence.

Richard continued:

“I spent forty years trying to create a human mind without the burden of mortality.”

“And?”

“I succeeded.”

Alexander stared.

Richard pointed toward Emma.

“Then she ruined everything.”

Elena stepped forward.

“She was never your experiment.”

“She was mine.”

“She was my daughter.”

“She was both.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Richard's expression hardened.

“You forget what you agreed to.”

Elena whispered:

“I was seventeen.”

“You were brilliant.”

“I was a child.”

“You understood.”

“I was afraid.”

“You volunteered.”

“I wanted to save Lily.”

Richard went silent.

Alexander turned toward Elena.

“Lily?”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“I thought if I helped him…”

She swallowed.

“…he would let Lily live.”

Alexander looked toward Richard.

“You blackmailed your own daughter.”

Richard answered calmly:

“I gave her a choice.”

“You threatened her child.”

“I offered her a way to save her.”

“And she believed you.”

“She had no reason not to.”

Alexander stared at Elena.

“What did you agree to?”

Elena closed her eyes.

“To create a child.”

Alexander's face changed.

“What?”

“A child capable of holding memories without losing herself.”

“Emma.”

“Yes.”

“You planned her.”

Elena nodded.

“But I didn't know…”

She looked at Emma.

“…what he intended to do with her.”

Richard interrupted.

“I told you.”

“You lied.”

“I told you the truth you needed to hear.”

Alexander's voice became colder.

“You manipulated her.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated me.”

“Yes.”

“You manipulated every child.”

“Yes.”

Alexander stepped closer.

“And now you want Emma.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Richard pointed toward the machine.

“Because my body is dying.”

Alexander looked at the elderly body inside the chamber.

Richard continued:

“My biological body failed years ago.”

“So you preserved your consciousness.”

“Yes.”

“Inside the system.”

“Yes.”

“And now you want to transfer yourself into Emma.”

Richard smiled.

“Not transfer.”

Alexander frowned.

“Then what?”

“Merge.”

The word echoed.

Elena's face went pale.

“No.”

Richard looked at her.

“She was designed to contain me.”

“She wasn't designed for that.”

“She was.”

“You told me she would only preserve memories.”

“I told you what you needed to hear.”

Alexander's fists clenched.

Richard continued:

“Emma can absorb an entire consciousness.”

“And survive.”

“Yes.”

“So you become her.”

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“She becomes me.”

Alexander's blood ran cold.

“No.”

Richard stepped toward Emma.

“Imagine it.”

“A perfect mind.”

“Your daughter's body.”

“My memories.”

“Your family's memories.”

“Everything preserved.”

Alexander shook his head.

“That's not Emma.”

Richard looked at him.

“Emma is temporary.”

Alexander's expression changed.

“Get away from my daughter.”

Richard stopped.

“Alexander.”

“You don't get to call my name.”

Richard smiled.

“You are still carrying Daniel's memories.”

Alexander froze.

Richard continued:

“And Elena is carrying fragments of Lily.”

Elena stared.

“And Emma…”

Richard pointed toward her.

“…is carrying fragments of all of us.”

Alexander's stomach dropped.

Richard had known.

He had known from the beginning.

The wedding.

The interruption.

The children.

The archive.

Everything.

It had all been moving toward this moment.

Alexander looked at Jonathan.

“You knew.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“I knew about the vessel.”

“You knew Emma was the target.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Richard was alive.”

“No.”

Alexander stared.

Jonathan swallowed.

“I thought he was dead.”

Richard laughed.

“You always underestimated me.”

Jonathan's expression hardened.

“I tried to destroy Eden.”

“You only destroyed the shell.”

“I saved Daniel.”

“You delayed him.”

“You killed children.”

Richard's face became cold.

“Necessary sacrifices.”

Jonathan stepped forward.

“No.”

Richard looked at him.

“You're still pretending you're different from me.”

Jonathan's fists tightened.

“I am.”

“No.”

Richard shook his head.

“You murdered thirty-seven children.”

Jonathan's face broke.

“To save the others.”

Richard smiled.

“That is what every monster says.”

Silence.

Alexander looked between them.

Then toward his mother.

“You knew he was alive.”

She lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

“You all knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you let him stay hidden.”

“We tried to stop him.”

“But failed.”

“Yes.”

Alexander looked at Emma.

Then Lily.

Then Sophie.

Then Daniel.

His family had been pulled into a war that began before he was born.

And now the war wanted his daughter.

Richard raised his hand.

The machines activated.

Emma suddenly screamed.

Alexander turned.

“Emma!”

Her tiny body shook.

Elena rushed forward.

“What's happening?”

Richard smiled.

“The synchronization has begun.”

Alexander looked at the monitors.

MEMORY COMPATIBILITY: 93%

He froze.

“What is that?”

Richard answered:

“The system is recognizing me.”

Alexander looked at Emma.

“Stop it.”

Richard shook his head.

“You can't.”

Jonathan rushed to the console.

He began typing.

“I'm trying.”

Richard laughed.

“Your access was revoked twenty years ago.”

Jonathan looked at him.

“You planned this.”

“Yes.”

“Why bring us here?”

Richard smiled.

“Because the final transfer requires witnesses.”

Alexander stared.

“Why?”

“Because memories become stronger when they are emotionally connected.”

Alexander understood.

“You want us here.”

“Yes.”

“You want Emma to absorb our memories.”

“Yes.”

“You want her emotionally connected to us.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because it makes the transfer permanent.”

Alexander's face went cold.

“You're using our love against her.”

Richard nodded.

“Exactly.”

Emma screamed again.

Alexander held her.

“Daddy…”

Her voice was weak.

“I’m here.”

Richard looked at them.

“Say goodbye.”

Alexander stared.

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“That's what every father says.”

The machines grew louder.

97%.

Elena began crying.

“Alexander…”

He looked at her.

“We need to get her out.”

“I know.”

“But the door is locked.”

“I know.”

“Then what do we do?”

Alexander looked around.

The chamber was sealed.

The only exit was controlled by the system.

Richard controlled the system.

Jonathan tried every command.

Nothing worked.

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“There is another way.”

Everyone turned.

Daniel stood beside the machine.

His eyes were different.

Calm.

Focused.

“What?”

Daniel pointed toward Richard.

“He can't control what he can't remember.”

Richard's smile disappeared.

“What did you say?”

Daniel continued:

“You forgot something.”

Richard stepped forward.

“What?”

Daniel smiled.

“Me.”

Richard stared.

Daniel raised his hand.

The lights flickered.

Richard's face changed.

“No.”

Alexander looked confused.

“What is happening?”

Daniel whispered:

“I remember the original code.”

Jonathan stared.

“Daniel…”

Daniel nodded.

“Dad taught it to me.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Stop.”

Daniel began speaking numbers.

Not random numbers.

A sequence.

Jonathan recognized them.

“That's the encryption key.”

Alexander stared.

“Can it shut the system down?”

Jonathan shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“It can reverse the transfer.”

Richard shouted:

“STOP HIM!”

Security drones emerged from the walls.

Alexander fired.

The drones dropped.

Elena grabbed a metal rod.

Sophie pulled Lily behind her.

Jonathan fought toward the control panel.

Daniel continued.

“Seven.”

“Four.”

“Zero.”

“Zero.”

“Two.”

“Three.”

The machine screamed.

TRANSFER ERROR.

Richard's face turned white.

“No!”

Daniel smiled.

“It's remembering.”

The lights flashed.

Every screen filled with images.

Richard as a child.

Richard in the first laboratory.

Richard meeting Elena.

Richard creating Eden.

Richard ordering experiments.

Richard killing children.

Richard transferring his memories.

All of it.

Every secret.

Every crime.

Every lie.

Displayed.

Jonathan stared.

“He stored his own memories in the system.”

Daniel nodded.

“That's why I can reverse it.”

Alexander looked at Richard.

“You thought you could hide inside Eden.”

Richard screamed:

“Turn it off!”

Alexander stepped toward him.

“No.”

Richard's face twisted.

“You don't understand what you're destroying!”

“I understand exactly.”

“You'll lose everything.”

Alexander looked at Emma.

“I'd rather lose every memory than lose my daughter.”

Richard lunged.

Alexander tackled him.

They crashed into the floor.

Richard fought with surprising strength.

“You can't kill me!”

Alexander grabbed his arm.

“I'm not trying to kill you.”

Richard froze.

Alexander looked toward Jonathan.

“I'm trying to disconnect you.”

Jonathan nodded.

He slammed his hand against the emergency control.

The system began shutting down.

TRANSFER ABORTED.

Richard screamed.

“No!”

His body began collapsing.

Alexander stepped back.

Richard looked toward Emma.

“Take me with you.”

Emma stared.

Richard crawled toward her.

“Please.”

For the first time...

he sounded afraid.

Alexander stood between them.

“No.”

Richard whispered:

“She belongs to me.”

Alexander answered:

“She belongs to herself.”

The system reached:

0%.

Everything went dark.

Richard collapsed.

Silence.

Then Emma opened her eyes.

She looked at Alexander.

“Daddy.”

He picked her up.

“I'm here.”

She smiled.

Then whispered:

“Grandfather is gone.”

Alexander froze.

“Gone?”

Emma nodded.

“He isn't in the machine anymore.”

Jonathan checked the monitor.

“She's right.”

Alexander exhaled.

For one moment...

it seemed over.

Then Daniel looked at the final screen.

His face changed.

“Alex.”

Alexander turned.

“What?”

Daniel pointed.

A single file remained.

EDEN — CONTINGENCY PROTOCOL

Alexander stared.

“What is that?”

Jonathan walked closer.

“I don't know.”

Daniel whispered:

“I do.”

Alexander looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel swallowed.

“It's what happens if Richard dies.”

The screen activated.

A countdown appeared.

03:00

Alexander's heart stopped.

“What does it do?”

Jonathan's face went pale.

“It sends every stored memory to every connected person.”

Alexander stared.

“All of them?”

“Yes.”

“Every victim?”

“Yes.”

“Every secret?”

“Yes.”

“And Emma?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Especially Emma.”

The countdown continued.

02:41

Elena looked terrified.

“How do we stop it?”

Jonathan stared at the screen.

“There is only one way.”

Alexander looked at him.

“What?”

“We have to destroy the archive.”

“Then destroy it.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“If we destroy it now…”

“What?”

“All the memories inside will be released at once.”

Alexander looked at Emma.

“And if we don't?”

“They'll remain trapped.”

“Then we need another option.”

Jonathan hesitated.

“There is one.”

“What?”

“We can transfer the archive.”

“To where?”

Jonathan looked at Alexander.

“Into one person.”

Alexander understood.

“No.”

Jonathan nodded.

“Someone compatible enough to hold it.”

“Daniel?”

“No.”

“Me?”

“Yes.”

Alexander stared.

“If I take the archive…”

“You'll carry every memory.”

“How many?”

Jonathan whispered:

“Thousands.”

Alexander looked at Emma.

“What happens to me?”

Jonathan answered honestly.

“You may lose yourself.”

Elena stepped forward.

“No.”

Alexander looked at her.

“It's the only way.”

“You'll die.”

“Maybe.”

“I won't let you.”

“You promised to protect the girls.”

“I can protect them.”

“Not if the archive destroys them.”

Elena began crying.

Alexander touched her face.

“I spent years forgetting my family.”

He looked at Lily.

“I'm not going to spend the rest of my life running from them.”

Then he looked at Daniel.

“And I'm not letting my brother carry this alone.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You don't have to.”

“Yes.”

Alexander turned toward Jonathan.

“Can you transfer it?”

Jonathan nodded.

“But there's one problem.”

“What?”

“Someone has to remain connected until the transfer is complete.”

Alexander looked at Emma.

“What happens if she disconnects?”

Jonathan hesitated.

“She could lose her own memories.”

Alexander froze.

“So Emma has to stay connected.”

“Yes.”

“And Lily?”

“She may lose the memories she just recovered.”

Sophie looked terrified.

“Then we can't.”

Alexander stared at the children.

Everything was connected.

Every choice had a cost.

Every rescue demanded a sacrifice.

The countdown reached:

01:37

Alexander closed his eyes.

Then he heard Lily.

“Daddy.”

He opened them.

Lily stood before him.

She was crying.

But she was smiling.

“You always tell us to be brave.”

Alexander knelt.

“Yes.”

“Then be brave.”

He hugged her.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“I'll help.”

Alexander shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel smiled.

“You saved me.”

“Daniel—”

“Now let me save you.”

He placed his hand on Alexander's shoulder.

The machine activated.

01:12

Jonathan shouted:

“Decide!”

Alexander looked at his family.

Then at Emma.

Then at the archive.

He stepped forward.

“Transfer it to me.”

Elena screamed:

“Alexander!”

He turned.

“I'll come back.”

She shook her head.

“You don't know that.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“But I know this.”

He looked at Emma.

“She knows me.”

Emma reached toward him.

Alexander took her tiny hand.

The system activated.

00:59

A thousand voices filled the chamber.

Children.

Parents.

Victims.

Scientists.

Every memory.

Every scream.

Every goodbye.

Alexander closed his eyes.

And let them in.

The last thing he heard before the transfer began...

was Emma whispering:

“Daddy…”

May you like

Then the machine exploded with light.

And Alexander disappeared inside his own memories.
