CHAPTER 9 — THE LAST LIE

For several seconds, Ethan couldn't move.
Samuel stood across from him beneath the pale morning sky, his face stripped of every excuse.
Olivia held Aria close.
The baby's tiny face was buried against her mother's chest, completely unaware that the adults around her were tearing open a history built on secrets.
Ethan finally spoke.
“What did you lie about?”
Samuel lowered his eyes.
“Almost everything that happened the night your mother died.”
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“You told me you were only her attorney.”
“I was.”
“You told me Richard was responsible for the accident.”
“I believed he was.”
“You told me you disappeared because Richard threatened you.”
“He did.”
“Then what did you lie about?”
Samuel looked at him.
“The reason I was there.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“Tell me.”
Samuel took a slow breath.
“I wasn't there to protect your mother.”
Ethan stared.
“I was there to stop her.”
Olivia's eyes widened.
“Stop her from doing what?”
Samuel looked at Aria.
“From exposing the truth about Blackridge.”
Ethan felt something inside him break.
“You worked for Richard.”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Samuel hesitated.
“Jonathan.”
Ethan froze.
“My great-grandfather?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Jonathan believed the Blackridge network was too powerful to expose all at once.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“So everyone was protecting the empire.”
“No.”
Samuel shook his head.
“Your mother was trying to destroy the system.”
“And you stopped her.”
“I tried.”
“What happened?”
“She refused.”
Ethan's voice became colder.
“What happened after she refused?”
Samuel looked away.
“That's when everything went wrong.”
They returned to the safehouse.
No one spoke during the drive.
Olivia sat in the back with Aria.
Ethan sat beside her.
Samuel rode in another vehicle with Daniel.
The silence was suffocating.
When they arrived, Ethan immediately walked into the study.
He shut the door.
Olivia followed.
“Ethan.”
He didn't answer.
She touched his arm.
“You need to breathe.”
He stared at the window.
“I trusted him.”
“I know.”
“He helped me find my mother’s truth.”
“I know.”
“He gave me the documents.”
“I know.”
“And all this time…”
He closed his eyes.
“He was hiding the biggest piece.”
Olivia stood beside him.
“Maybe he wasn't trying to hurt you.”
Ethan turned.
“He lied.”
“Yes.”
“That's enough.”
Olivia looked at him.
“Sometimes people lie because they're guilty.”
“Sometimes they lie because they're afraid.”
She paused.
“There's a difference.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You're defending him.”
“No.”
Olivia shook her head.
“I'm reminding you that we're not Richard.”
Ethan's expression softened.
Olivia continued.
“We don't punish people before we know the whole truth.”
He nodded slowly.
“You're right.”
She reached for his hand.
“But we don't trust them blindly either.”
Ethan squeezed her fingers.
“Never again.”
Samuel waited in the study for nearly an hour before Ethan finally entered.
Daniel stood beside him.
Ethan closed the door.
“Start from the beginning.”
Samuel nodded.
“Your mother discovered Blackridge in 2001.”
Ethan said nothing.
“She discovered that Richard was using it to manipulate ownership records.”
“We know that.”
“No.”
Samuel shook his head.
“You know what she discovered later.”
Ethan frowned.
“What did she discover first?”
“That Blackridge wasn't Richard's creation.”
Ethan froze.
“Who created it?”
“Jonathan.”
Silence.
Ethan stared at him.
“Why?”
“To protect the family assets.”
“From whom?”
“From the government.”
Ethan's expression hardened.
“Why would he need to hide legal assets from the government?”
“Because some of those assets had been acquired through questionable agreements.”
“What kind?”
“Political favors.”
“Bribes?”
“Some.”
“Illegal contracts?”
“Yes.”
“Then my great-grandfather built the empire illegally.”
Samuel didn't answer.
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“So that's the truth.”
“No.”
Samuel looked directly at him.
“The empire was built through legal businesses.”
“But Jonathan used illegal methods to protect it.”
“Yes.”
Ethan walked toward the window.
“Richard inherited the system.”
“Yes.”
“And my mother wanted to destroy it.”
“Yes.”
“And you were ordered to stop her.”
Samuel nodded.
“By Jonathan.”
Ethan turned.
“Why would he trust you?”
“Because I was his attorney.”
“And why should I trust you now?”
Samuel looked exhausted.
“You shouldn't.”
The honesty caught Ethan off guard.
Samuel continued.
“Trust has to be earned again.”
Daniel suddenly spoke.
“There is something else.”
Ethan turned.
“What?”
Daniel looked at Samuel.
“You never told him about the ledger.”
Samuel's face changed.
“What ledger?”
Daniel stared at him.
“You know exactly what I'm talking about.”
Ethan stepped between them.
“What ledger?”
Samuel remained silent.
“Samuel.”
He finally said,
“The Black Ledger.”
“What is it?”
“A list.”
“Of what?”
“Every person who received money through Blackridge.”
Ethan's heart raced.
“How many?”
“Hundreds.”
“Politicians?”
“Yes.”
“Judges?”
“Yes.”
“Corporate executives?”
“Yes.”
“Police?”
Samuel nodded.
“Some.”
Ethan stared.
“And Victor?”
Samuel looked at him.
“Victor has his own copy.”
“Then why does he need the master key?”
“Because the master key doesn't open the ledger.”
“What does it open?”
Samuel hesitated.
“The archive.”
Ethan frowned.
“What archive?”
“The physical archive containing the original contracts.”
“Where?”
Samuel whispered,
“Under the Hale estate.”
Ethan froze.
“The estate?”
“Yes.”
That evening, Ethan stood outside the estate gates.
The house looked exactly as he remembered.
Massive.
Cold.
Beautiful.
The same place where Olivia had once fallen down the stairs.
The same place where Derek had laughed.
The same place where Ethan had sworn never to return.
Now he had to go back.
Not for revenge.
For answers.
Olivia stood beside him.
Aria was safely inside a protected vehicle.
“You don't have to do this tonight,” Olivia said.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor knows where we are.”
“And?”
“If the archive is under the house, then that's where he'll go.”
Olivia looked toward the estate.
“You think he'll come?”
“I know he will.”
They entered through the front gate.
The house was empty.
Dust covered the furniture.
The chandeliers were dark.
Ethan walked toward the staircase.
He stopped.
Olivia looked at him.
“Are you okay?”
He nodded.
But his eyes remained fixed on the bottom step.
He remembered her there.
Pregnant.
Crying.
Holding tiny clothes.
He remembered Derek laughing.
He remembered his father standing above her.
He remembered the rage that had changed his life.
Olivia touched his shoulder.
“Don't let this house become that memory.”
Ethan looked at her.
“What should it be?”
“A place we finally reclaim.”
He smiled.
“Together.”
They entered the study.
The walls were lined with bookshelves.
Ethan examined the fireplace.
Nothing.
The desk.
Nothing.
Then Olivia noticed something.
“Ethan.”
“What?”
She pointed toward a painting.
It showed Jonathan Hale standing beside the original estate.
But something was strange.
The painting had no signature.
Olivia touched the frame.
“It moves.”
Ethan pulled it.
The frame shifted.
Behind it was a small metal panel.
He inserted the brass key.
A click.
The wall opened.
Behind it was a staircase leading downward.
Ethan stared.
“Your mother knew.”
Olivia smiled faintly.
“She always did.”
They descended.
The air became colder.
The staircase ended at a massive steel door.
There was another lock.
Ethan inserted the key.
The door opened.
Inside was an enormous archive.
Boxes filled the walls.
Documents stacked from floor to ceiling.
Computers.
Hard drives.
Ledgers.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Everything.
Ethan whispered,
“This is the real empire.”
Olivia walked toward a shelf.
She picked up a folder.
“Look.”
The label read:
BLACKRIDGE — ORIGINAL BENEFICIARIES
Ethan opened it.
Names.
Hundreds of them.
Some familiar.
Some powerful.
Some terrifying.
Then he saw one name.
His own.
ETHAN HALE — PROTECTED BENEFICIARY
Beside it was another.
OLIVIA HALE — TRUSTEE DESIGNATE
And below:
ARIA HALE — PRIMARY HEIR
Olivia stared.
“This was written before she was born.”
Ethan nodded.
“My mother knew.”
A sound echoed behind them.
Metal scraping.
Ethan turned.
The archive door was closing.
“Run!”
They rushed toward it.
Too late.
The door slammed shut.
The lights came on.
Victor Cross stood at the far end of the archive.
Four armed men surrounded him.
He smiled.
“You found it.”
Ethan stepped in front of Olivia.
“You followed us.”
Victor laughed.
“No.”
He pointed toward the ceiling.
“I've been here for hours.”
Ethan's blood ran cold.
“How?”
Victor smiled.
“Your house has always been my house.”
Olivia tightened her grip on Aria.
Victor's eyes moved toward the baby.
“I've waited twenty-three years for her.”
Ethan's expression hardened.
“You're not touching her.”
Victor shook his head.
“I don't need to.”
He pointed toward the shelves.
“I need what's behind them.”
“What?”
“The Black Ledger.”
Ethan looked at the archive.
“Why?”
“Because it proves who owns the empire.”
Ethan frowned.
“I thought you wanted the trust.”
Victor smiled.
“I want something much bigger.”
“What?”
“The truth.”
He walked toward them.
“Your great-grandfather didn't build this empire.”
Ethan stared.
“What are you talking about?”
Victor's smile widened.
“He stole it.”
Silence.
“From whom?”
Victor looked at Aria.
“Her.”
Ethan's blood ran cold.
“What?”
Victor continued.
“Your family has been living on stolen property for four generations.”
Olivia stepped forward.
“That's impossible.”
“No.”
Victor pointed toward the archive.
“The original records are here.”
He pulled out an old document.
“The Hale fortune belonged to another family.”
Ethan took the document.
The name at the top made him freeze.
CROSS FAMILY TRUST.
He looked at Victor.
“Your family?”
Victor nodded.
“Now you understand.”
Ethan's mind raced.
Jonathan had stolen the fortune.
Richard had inherited it.
Blackridge had hidden it.
Victor had spent decades trying to reclaim it.
But there was one problem.
Ethan looked at the document.
“Then why does Aria inherit it?”
Victor smiled.
“Because Jonathan knew what he had done.”
“What?”
“He created the Hale trust as compensation.”
Ethan stared.
Victor continued.
“Your daughter is the legal bridge between the two families.”
Olivia shook her head.
“No.”
Victor's expression became cold.
“She is the heir to both.”
Ethan looked at Aria.
Victor stepped closer.
“And that's why I need her alive.”
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
“For what?”
“To activate the original Cross trust.”
Silence.
Victor reached into his coat.
He removed a photograph.
It showed a young woman.
Ethan recognized her immediately.
His mother's face.
But she was standing beside another man.
A younger Victor.
Ethan's heart stopped.
“What is this?”
Victor smiled.
“Your mother and I were engaged.”
Ethan stared.
“What?”
Olivia looked at him.
Victor continued.
“Before she married Richard.”
Ethan felt the room tilt.
“My mother was going to marry you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she loved me.”
Ethan's voice became cold.
“Then why did she marry my father?”
Victor's expression changed.
“Because Jonathan forced her.”
Silence.
Ethan stared at the photograph.
Everything he thought he knew about his mother's marriage suddenly looked different.
Victor stepped closer.
“Your mother discovered the truth.”
“She wanted to expose Jonathan.”
“But Jonathan threatened you.”
Ethan whispered,
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“He told her that if she left Richard, you would disappear.”
Ethan's eyes filled with anger.
Victor nodded.
“Your mother chose you.”
Olivia's face softened.
“She sacrificed herself.”
Victor looked at Ethan.
“Exactly.”
A loud crash came from above.
Everyone froze.
Victor's men turned.
Ethan realized something.
The archive wasn't Victor's only objective.
He was distracting them.
Ethan grabbed Olivia.
“Move!”
They ran toward the opposite corridor.
Victor shouted.
“Stop them!”
Gunfire erupted.
Ethan pushed Olivia behind a concrete pillar.
“Stay down!”
He looked around.
There was another door.
He kicked it open.
A narrow passage.
“Go!”
Olivia ran.
Ethan followed.
They reached a staircase.
At the top was the study.
They emerged into the house.
Outside, security vehicles arrived.
Daniel was shouting orders.
“Get Olivia out!”
Ethan grabbed her.
They ran.
Victor's men followed.
Then the estate gates slammed shut.
Ethan turned.
Victor stood on the balcony.
He wasn't chasing them.
He was smiling.
Ethan frowned.
Then he heard Victor's voice through the estate speakers.
“Take the baby.”
Ethan's blood froze.
He turned toward the vehicle.
The security driver was gone.
The rear door was open.
Aria was missing.
Olivia screamed.
“No!”
Ethan ran.
The vehicle was empty.
A small blanket lay on the seat.
Olivia collapsed against Ethan.
“Where is she?”
Ethan looked around desperately.
Then his phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Victor's voice came through.
“You should have listened.”
Ethan's entire body went cold.
“Where is my daughter?”
“She is safe.”
“Bring her back.”
“Not yet.”
“I swear to God—”
“You can't threaten me.”
Victor paused.
“Because I have what you want.”
Ethan's voice broke.
“My daughter.”
“No.”
Victor laughed softly.
“The truth.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“What do you want?”
“I want the Black Ledger.”
“You already know where it is.”
“I want you to bring it to me.”
“And if I refuse?”
Victor's voice became ice.
“Then you'll never see Aria again.”
The call ended.
Olivia stared at Ethan.
He couldn't speak.
She whispered,
“She's our baby.”
Ethan nodded.
“I know.”
“We have to get her back.”
“We will.”
“But how?”
Ethan looked toward the dark estate.
His expression changed.
“We give Victor what he wants.”
Olivia stared at him.
“The ledger?”
“No.”
“The truth.”
Ethan looked at the staircase.
The same staircase where their lives had once been shattered.
Now he understood.
His mother's entire plan had led to this moment.
She had hidden the truth for Aria.
She had created the trust for Aria.
She had left the key for Aria.
And now someone had taken Aria.
Ethan clenched his fists.
“I’m going after her.”
Olivia grabbed his hand.
“Not alone.”
He looked at her.
She was crying.
But her eyes were fierce.
“Wherever she is,” Olivia whispered, “we go together.”
Ethan nodded.
Behind them, Samuel appeared.
His face was pale.
“I know where Victor is taking her.”
Ethan turned.
“Where?”
Samuel swallowed.
“The Cross estate.”
Ethan froze.
“There is no Cross estate.”
Samuel shook his head.
“There is.”
“Where?”
Samuel looked at him.
“Under the city.”
Ethan stared.
Samuel continued.
“Victor built it twenty years ago.”
“For what?”
Samuel's voice dropped.
“To prepare for the day the Hale family finally fell.”
Ethan looked at Olivia.
The nightmare had become larger than any of them imagined.
Richard was only the beginning.
Jonathan had hidden the original sin.
Samuel had hidden the truth.
Victor had waited in the shadows.
And now Aria—the innocent child at the center of a century-old war—was in Victor's hands.
But Victor had made one mistake.
He had taken Ethan's daughter.
May you like
And Ethan would tear apart the entire empire, piece by piece, to bring her home.
Even if the truth destroyed the Hale name forever.
