CHAPTER 13 — THE DAUGHTER IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

Olivia stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
The little girl stood beside Evelyn Cross beneath an old oak tree.
She was perhaps four years old.
Dark hair.
Pale eyes.
A small silver pendant around her neck.
And a face that looked disturbingly familiar.
Not identical to Olivia.
But close enough to make Olivia's heart pound.
Ethan took the photograph from her trembling hands.
“Who sent this?”
“I don't know.”
He turned it over.
Nothing.
No signature.
No date.
Only the words:
SHE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR YOU.
Olivia looked toward the open gates.
For months, she had believed the war was over.
She had destroyed Blackridge.
She had surrendered the empire.
She had watched powerful men lose everything they had built through fear.
She had finally created the life her mother had wanted for her.
And now one photograph had opened another door.
A door she wasn't sure she was ready to walk through.
“Ethan…”
He looked at her.
“What?”
“If she's really my sister…”
“Then we'll find her.”
Olivia shook her head.
“What if she doesn't want to be found?”
Ethan took her hand.
“Then we'll respect that.”
“And if she's in danger?”
His expression hardened.
“Then we won't stop until she's safe.”
Olivia looked at Aria.
Their daughter was sleeping peacefully upstairs.
For years, Olivia had wondered whether the sins of one generation could truly disappear.
Now she understood.
Secrets didn't disappear.
They waited.
And sometimes they returned wearing the face of a child.
That evening, they examined the photograph in the study.
Samuel sat across from them.
He stared at it for nearly a minute.
Then he whispered,
“I've seen this girl.”
Olivia's heart stopped.
“Where?”
Samuel looked uncomfortable.
“Years ago.”
“Where?”
“Switzerland.”
Ethan leaned forward.
“Explain.”
Samuel sighed.
“After your mother disappeared, I was sent to Geneva.”
“By whom?”
“Charles.”
“What were you supposed to do?”
“Locate Evelyn.”
Olivia stared.
“And?”
“I found her.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
Olivia's hands tightened.
“Where?”
“A private clinic outside Geneva.”
“What happened?”
“She was with a child.”
Olivia looked at the photograph.
“My sister.”
Samuel nodded.
“I believe so.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I never knew the child's identity.”
“But you knew Evelyn had a daughter.”
“I knew she had a child.”
Olivia stared at him.
“That's not the same thing.”
“No.”
Samuel lowered his eyes.
“I was afraid.”
Ethan asked,
“Afraid of Charles?”
Samuel nodded.
“And of Evelyn.”
“Why?”
“Because she told me something.”
“What?”
Samuel looked at Olivia.
“She said the child was safer without the Cross name.”
Olivia whispered,
“What was her name?”
Samuel hesitated.
“I never heard her real name.”
He pointed toward the photograph.
“But the clinic records called her…”
He stopped.
“What?”
“Anna.”
The name stayed with Olivia all night.
Anna.
Her sister.
A child her mother had hidden from Charles.
A child Olivia had never known existed.
At dawn, Olivia woke Ethan.
“I want to go to Geneva.”
He looked at her.
“When?”
“Today.”
Ethan didn't hesitate.
“Then today.”
They flew out that afternoon.
Aria stayed safely behind with trusted family members.
The flight was quiet.
Olivia stared through the window.
Ethan sat beside her.
“You're thinking about your mother.”
“Yes.”
“What are you thinking?”
“That she must have been terrified.”
He took her hand.
“She protected you.”
“And Anna.”
“Yes.”
Olivia looked at him.
“What kind of mother has to hide her own children?”
“The kind living in a world where powerful people can destroy families.”
Olivia looked down.
“I spent my whole life thinking she abandoned me.”
“She didn't.”
“I know.”
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“But I wish she had told me.”
Ethan wiped it away.
“Maybe she couldn't.”
The clinic no longer existed.
It had become a private residence.
But Samuel had kept an old contact.
A retired nurse named Elise.
They found her living in a small apartment overlooking Lake Geneva.
When Olivia introduced herself, the elderly woman immediately began to cry.
“You're Evelyn's daughter.”
Olivia nodded.
“Yes.”
Elise covered her mouth.
“I thought you were dead.”
“So did I.”
The woman invited them inside.
Ethan remained beside Olivia.
Elise studied her face.
“You have your mother's eyes.”
Olivia's voice trembled.
“Tell me about Anna.”
Elise looked toward the window.
“She was a beautiful child.”
“Where is she?”
“I don't know.”
Olivia's heart sank.
“But you knew her.”
“For three years.”
“What happened?”
Elise sighed.
“Your mother brought her to us after you were born.”
“Why?”
“She said Charles had discovered your existence.”
Olivia froze.
“My existence?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did he let me live?”
Elise shook her head.
“He didn't know where you were.”
Olivia stared.
“My aunt raised me.”
“Yes.”
“Then what happened to Anna?”
“She was moved.”
“By whom?”
“Your mother.”
“Where?”
Elise paused.
“She said the girl had to disappear.”
Olivia whispered,
“Why?”
“Because Anna wasn't simply another Cross descendant.”
Ethan leaned forward.
“What was she?”
Elise looked at him.
“The legal heir to the original Cross trust.”
Silence.
Olivia's eyes widened.
“But I was the trustee.”
“You became the trustee later.”
“Then why was Anna the heir?”
Elise shook her head.
“Because Anna was born first.”
Olivia froze.
“My sister is older than me?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did I never know?”
“Because your mother changed the records.”
Olivia sat back.
“Why?”
Elise's eyes filled with sadness.
“Because Charles wanted Anna.”
The truth unfolded slowly.
Anna had been born two years before Olivia.
Evelyn had hidden the pregnancy.
She had secretly given birth.
Charles had never known.
But after Anna's birth, the Cross family registry identified her as the primary heir.
Charles eventually discovered fragments of the truth.
He began searching.
Evelyn fled.
Then Olivia was born.
Evelyn realized Charles would never stop.
So she made the most painful decision of her life.
She divided her daughters.
Olivia was sent to Martha Parker.
Anna was sent to a family in Switzerland.
Both girls were given different identities.
Both were erased from the Cross registry.
Both were protected.
But there was one problem.
Charles had found out.
Elise handed Olivia a small envelope.
“Your mother left this for you.”
Olivia stared at it.
“Why didn't you give it to me before?”
“I didn't know where you were.”
Inside was another letter.
My little Olivia,
If this reaches you, then you know about Anna.
Olivia began crying.
I am sorry that I kept you apart.
I believed distance was the only way to keep both of you alive.
Anna was born first.
You were born second.
But neither of you was meant to inherit the Cross fortune.
Olivia continued reading.
Charles believed blood made people worthy.
I knew better.
That is why I created a trust neither of you could access until Blackridge was destroyed.
Ethan looked at Olivia.
The letter continued.
When Blackridge falls, the trust will activate.
And the two sisters will finally have a choice.
Olivia's hands trembled.
“What choice?”
She read the next line.
Whether to restore the fortune—or destroy it forever.
Elise gave them another document.
It contained an address.
A small village in southern France.
“That's where Anna lived?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Until she was eighteen.”
“What happened after that?”
Elise shook her head.
“She disappeared.”
Olivia looked at Ethan.
“Again.”
“Yes.”
“Do you know why?”
“She found out who she was.”
Olivia's heart sank.
“And she went looking for the truth.”
“Yes.”
“Did she find it?”
Elise looked at the photograph.
“I think she did.”
They traveled to France.
The village was quiet.
Stone houses.
Narrow roads.
Old trees.
A church overlooking the valley.
They found the house in the photograph.
An elderly man answered the door.
When Olivia showed him the picture, he immediately stepped backward.
“Where did you get that?”
“My mother.”
The man's face changed.
“Evelyn?”
“Yes.”
He looked at Olivia.
“You're her daughter.”
“Yes.”
He stared at her for a long time.
Then whispered,
“Anna talked about you.”
Olivia's heart jumped.
“She knew about me?”
“She knew she had a sister.”
“What did she say?”
“That she hoped you'd never find her.”
“Why?”
“Because everyone who searched for the truth ended up dead.”
Olivia felt a chill.
“Is she alive?”
The man looked away.
“I don't know.”
“You must know something.”
He hesitated.
Then opened the door.
“Come inside.”
He showed them a box.
Inside were photographs.
Anna growing up.
Anna at school.
Anna graduating.
Anna beside a young man.
Olivia picked up one photograph.
“Who is he?”
The man's expression darkened.
“His name was Daniel.”
Ethan frowned.
“Daniel Cross?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
“Daniel Mercer.”
Olivia looked at Ethan.
“Mercer.”
Ethan immediately remembered.
The name appeared in one of the Blackridge records.
A former financial investigator.
Missing since 2015.
The old man continued.
“Anna loved him.”
“What happened?”
“He discovered the Black Ledger.”
Olivia's heart sank.
“He was killed?”
“We never found his body.”
Ethan looked at the photograph.
“Then he may still be alive.”
The old man nodded.
“That was Anna's belief.”
Olivia whispered,
“And she went looking for him.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
The man reached into the box.
He removed a map.
A location was circled in red.
London.
Ethan looked at Olivia.
“That's where we go next.”
That night, Olivia couldn't sleep.
She walked outside.
The moonlight covered the village.
She sat beneath an old tree.
Ethan found her.
“You okay?”
“No.”
He sat beside her.
“I keep imagining her.”
“Anna?”
“Yes.”
“What if she hates me?”
“Why would she?”
“Because she grew up alone.”
“You did too.”
“But I had people.”
“So did she.”
Olivia shook her head.
“We both lost the same mother.”
Ethan took her hand.
“Then maybe you both deserve the chance to find each other.”
Olivia looked at him.
“What if she doesn't want that?”
“Then you accept it.”
She smiled sadly.
“You always say that.”
“Because it's true.”
A long silence followed.
Then Olivia whispered,
“I want a sister.”
Ethan kissed her forehead.
“Then let's find her.”
London greeted them with rain.
Samuel had located the first trace of Daniel Mercer.
A bank account.
Opened in 2017.
Used once.
Then abandoned.
The account holder:
D. MERCER
The final transaction had been made from an underground station.
Ethan examined the timestamp.
“Two weeks ago.”
Olivia stared.
“Two weeks?”
“He's alive.”
Samuel nodded.
“Possibly.”
They tracked the transaction to a storage facility.
Inside locker 317, they found a laptop.
And a single message.
IF OLIVIA HALE FINDS THIS, SHE MUST NOT TRUST THE WOMAN WHO CALLS HERSELF ANNA.
Olivia's heart stopped.
Ethan stared at the screen.
“What does that mean?”
The laptop opened another file.
A video appeared.
A young woman looked into the camera.
Olivia knew immediately.
Anna.
Her sister.
Anna's eyes were exactly like Evelyn's.
She spoke quietly.
“Olivia.”
Olivia couldn't breathe.
“I know you're looking for me.”
Anna looked exhausted.
“I know about Blackridge.”
“I know about Charles.”
“And I know what our mother did.”
She paused.
“But there is something you don't know.”
Olivia stepped closer.
Anna whispered,
“Charles Cross is not my biological father.”
Ethan froze.
Olivia stared.
Anna continued.
“Our mother had another secret.”
She looked frightened.
“The man she was with before Charles wasn't Victor.”
“It was someone else.”
A photograph appeared.
A man.
Olivia recognized him immediately.
Ethan's face turned pale.
“No.”
Anna whispered:
“His name was Jonathan Hale.”
Silence.
Olivia's eyes widened.
“Jonathan?”
Anna nodded.
“Our families were never enemies.”
“They were one family.”
The video ended.
Ethan stood frozen.
Olivia looked at him.
“My sister says Jonathan Hale was our father.”
Ethan shook his head.
“That would mean…”
Olivia whispered,
“That the Hale and Cross bloodlines were connected from the beginning.”
Then the laptop chimed.
A new message appeared.
MEET ME ALONE.
Location:
ST. PANCRAS STATION — MIDNIGHT.
Olivia stared at the message.
Ethan reached for her hand.
But before he could speak, another message appeared.
IF ETHAN COMES, ANNA DIES.
Olivia's heart stopped.
She looked at Ethan.
For the first time in their entire marriage, she knew there was a choice he might not be able to make for her.
She had spent years fighting beside him.
Now someone was asking her to walk into danger alone.
And somewhere beneath London, a woman who shared her blood was waiting.
Not for rescue.
For a confession.
Because the secret Anna carried could destroy the last piece of the Hale family history.
And this time, the truth wasn't buried in an archive.
May you like
It was alive.
And waiting for Olivia.
