CHAPTER 6 — THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE COMPANY

The morning after Aria's birth, Ethan received a phone call that changed the direction of the war.
It came at 6:03 a.m.
He was sitting beside Olivia's hospital bed, watching his newborn daughter sleep.
Aria's tiny fingers were curled around the edge of her blanket.
Olivia was asleep.
For the first time in months, Ethan allowed himself to feel something other than fear.
Peace.
Then his phone vibrated.
He looked at the screen.
Helen Martin.
He answered immediately.
“Hello?”
Her voice was tense.
“Ethan, don't go to Hale International.”
He frowned.
“Why?”
“Because they're waiting for you.”
“Who?”
“Everyone.”
Ethan stood.
“What happened?”
“The board called an emergency meeting.”
“When?”
“Forty minutes ago.”
“Why?”
Helen took a breath.
“They're accusing you of embezzling company funds.”
Ethan's face hardened.
“What?”
“Ten million dollars.”
Silence.
“The exact amount you were investigating.”
“Yes.”
“Who made the accusation?”
Helen's voice dropped.
“Your father.”
Ethan looked toward Olivia.
She was awake now.
“What is it?” she whispered.
Ethan covered the phone.
“They're accusing me of stealing the money.”
Olivia sat up.
“They're trying to frame you.”
“I know.”
He returned to the call.
“What evidence do they have?”
“Bank transfers.”
“Forged?”
“Apparently.”
“Signatures?”
“Yes.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Of course.”
Helen continued.
“They also have emails.”
“Emails?”
“Instructions supposedly sent from you authorizing the transfers.”
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“I never sent them.”
“I know.”
“Can you prove it?”
“Not yet.”
Ethan looked at Aria.
His daughter slept peacefully.
The world outside her room was already trying to destroy her future.
“How long before the board votes?”
“Two hours.”
“I'll be there.”
Helen immediately said,
“No.”
Ethan looked at the phone.
“Why?”
“Because if you walk into that meeting, they'll arrest you.”
“Then what am I supposed to do?”
“Stay alive.”
Ethan's expression hardened.
“I can't hide while they steal my company.”
Helen was silent.
Then she said,
“It isn't your company anymore.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
“The board has already accepted Richard's emergency proposal.”
“What proposal?”
“To remove you from all executive authority.”
Ethan stared at Olivia.
She had heard enough.
Her face became pale.
“What did they do?”
Ethan lowered the phone.
“They took control.”
Olivia looked at Aria.
“Then we take it back.”
At Hale International Holdings, the boardroom was packed.
Richard sat at the head of the table.
Derek stood beside the screen.
On the wall were financial records.
Transfers.
Bank statements.
Emails.
Everything pointed toward Ethan.
A senior board member spoke.
“The evidence appears substantial.”
Richard nodded.
“It pains me.”
His voice sounded rehearsed.
“My son has been under enormous pressure.”
Derek lowered his eyes.
“He's been unstable since Olivia's accident.”
Another director looked uncomfortable.
“Are you suggesting he stole the money?”
Richard sighed.
“I don't want to believe it.”
He paused.
“But the evidence speaks for itself.”
Derek clicked the remote.
A document appeared.
Ethan's digital signature.
Transfer authorization.
Ten million dollars.
The room became silent.
The chairman looked at Richard.
“Why would Ethan do this?”
Richard's expression was filled with false sadness.
“I don't know.”
He looked toward Derek.
“Perhaps he thought he was entitled to the money.”
Derek added quietly,
“Or perhaps he knew his father would never give him control.”
Several board members exchanged glances.
The chairman cleared his throat.
“Then we need to act.”
Richard nodded.
“I agree.”
He placed a document on the table.
“Effective immediately, I recommend suspending Ethan Hale from all company operations.”
A vote was called.
One by one, hands rose.
Richard watched.
The last vote belonged to the company's chief legal officer.
Mr. Grant.
He raised his hand.
The chairman announced:
“Motion passed.”
Richard leaned back.
For the first time in years, he smiled.
Ethan was out.
But Richard had made one mistake.
He had underestimated Helen Martin.
At 7:21 a.m., Helen received a message.
I need everything.
She looked at the sender.
Ethan.
She replied:
Give me three hours.
Then she opened an encrypted archive.
Inside were decades of financial records.
Records Ethan's mother had collected.
Records Richard had never found.
Helen smiled.
“Let's see how good your evidence really is.”
At the hospital, Olivia held Aria against her chest.
Ethan stood by the window.
He had barely slept.
“We need a lawyer.”
“I know.”
“A good one.”
“I know someone.”
“Who?”
“Samuel Whitmore.”
Olivia looked at him.
“The attorney who disappeared?”
“Yes.”
“You think he's alive?”
“I think my mother knew where he was.”
Ethan took out the key.
The same key Margaret had given him.
Olivia stared at it.
“Where does that lead?”
“I don't know.”
“Then find out.”
Ethan nodded.
Before he could move, someone knocked.
A nurse entered.
“Mr. Hale?”
“Yes?”
“There is a man here asking to see you.”
“Who?”
“He says his name is Samuel Whitmore.”
Ethan froze.
Olivia stared at him.
“Send him in.”
The nurse left.
Thirty seconds later, an elderly man entered.
White hair.
Dark suit.
Walking cane.
Ethan immediately recognized him.
“Samuel?”
The man smiled.
“You look just like your mother.”
Ethan stepped toward him.
“You're alive.”
“Barely.”
Ethan's voice tightened.
“Why did you disappear?”
Samuel looked toward Olivia.
“Because your father made me disappear.”
Samuel sat beside the window.
He looked at Aria.
“She is beautiful.”
Olivia smiled.
“Thank you.”
Samuel's eyes became serious.
“She's also in danger.”
Ethan nodded.
“I know.”
Samuel looked at him.
“Do you have the original trust?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Safe.”
“Good.”
Samuel leaned forward.
“Then your father has not won.”
Ethan frowned.
“He took control of the company this morning.”
“I know.”
“He framed me.”
“I know.”
“How?”
Samuel smiled.
“Because I wrote the original trust.”
Ethan froze.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“My mother didn't create it?”
“No.”
“Then my grandfather?”
Samuel shook his head.
“Your great-grandfather.”
Ethan stared.
“How far back does this go?”
Samuel looked at Aria.
“Four generations.”
He opened his briefcase.
Inside was an old leather-bound book.
“The Hale family fortune was established by your great-grandfather, Jonathan Hale.”
Samuel placed the book on the table.
“He believed that no single person should control everything.”
Ethan opened it.
“He created the trust.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did Richard control the company?”
“Because the trust allowed temporary management.”
“Until?”
“Until the birth of the first legitimate descendant of the designated bloodline.”
Ethan looked at Aria.
“Her.”
Samuel nodded.
“Your daughter is the trigger.”
Olivia asked,
“What happens when the trust activates?”
Samuel looked at Ethan.
“Richard loses control.”
“And Aria gains it?”
“Not directly.”
Samuel turned a page.
“A trustee will manage the assets until she reaches adulthood.”
Ethan exhaled.
“Then Richard can't touch the company.”
“Not legally.”
“But he can destroy it.”
Samuel nodded.
“That is exactly what he's trying to do.”
Ethan looked at the financial records.
“So the ten million was planted.”
“Yes.”
“How do we prove it?”
Samuel looked at him.
“Don't prove that you didn't steal the money.”
Ethan frowned.
“Then what?”
“Prove where the money actually went.”
Helen entered the room.
She was carrying three boxes.
“I found it.”
Ethan stood.
“What?”
Helen placed the boxes on the table.
“Everything.”
She opened the first.
Bank statements.
The second.
Server logs.
The third.
Original accounting records.
She looked at Ethan.
“The ten million never left Hale International.”
Ethan stared.
“What?”
“It was transferred internally.”
“To Blackridge?”
“No.”
Helen smiled.
“To an account controlled by your father.”
Ethan's heart pounded.
“Can you prove it?”
“I can prove more than that.”
She opened another folder.
“Your father's personal account received twelve million dollars.”
“When?”
“Six weeks ago.”
Ethan stared.
“Six weeks?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Helen placed a final document on the table.
A contract.
Signed by Richard.
It was a purchase agreement.
He had been secretly buying shares of Hale International through another company.
The name of that company was:
Blackridge Consulting.
Ethan looked at Samuel.
“So Blackridge isn't just a laundering company.”
“No.”
Samuel's expression became grim.
“It is the vehicle Richard has been using to purchase the company from itself.”
Ethan finally understood.
Richard had been creating debt.
Moving assets.
Buying shares through shell companies.
Destroying the company's value.
Then planning to acquire the remaining shares at a fraction of their real worth.
He wasn't stealing the empire.
He was engineering its collapse so he could buy it.
Olivia whispered,
“He was going to own it without the trust.”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked at Aria.
“And once she was born…”
Samuel nodded.
“He needed Ethan to sign away his rights.”
A knock sounded.
Everyone froze.
The door opened.
Derek stood there.
He looked exhausted.
His tie was loose.
His face was pale.
He closed the door behind him.
“I need to talk to Ethan.”
Ethan stared.
“Why?”
Derek looked at Samuel.
Then Helen.
Then Olivia.
Finally, at Aria.
“I know what Dad is doing.”
Silence.
Ethan stepped forward.
“You helped him.”
“I know.”
“You pushed Olivia.”
“I know.”
“You lied to me.”
“I know.”
Ethan's voice hardened.
“Then why are you here?”
Derek's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I realized something.”
“What?”
“He'll do the same thing to me.”
Ethan said nothing.
Derek reached into his pocket.
He removed a flash drive.
“Everything is on here.”
Ethan didn't take it.
“What is it?”
“Dad's private accounting system.”
Helen stepped forward.
“Where did you get this?”
“His office.”
“Why give it to us?”
Derek looked at Ethan.
“Because I don't want to become him.”
Ethan stared at his brother.
For the first time, Derek looked genuinely afraid.
“What changed?”
Derek swallowed.
“Aria.”
He looked at the baby.
“When I saw her…”
His voice broke.
“I realized what kind of man I was becoming.”
Ethan remained silent.
Derek continued.
“I kept telling myself I was only helping Dad.”
“But every time someone got hurt, I told myself it wasn't my fault.”
He looked at Olivia.
“I was wrong.”
Olivia said nothing.
Derek lowered his head.
“I'm sorry.”
The apology hung in the room.
Olivia didn't forgive him.
Not yet.
But she didn't look away.
Ethan finally took the flash drive.
“What's on it?”
“Everything.”
“Enough to destroy him?”
Derek nodded.
“Enough to put him away.”
They opened the files.
The first folder contained financial records.
The second contained private messages.
The third contained photographs.
Then Ethan found a video.
He clicked it.
Richard appeared on screen.
Talking to a banker.
“Once Ethan signs, the trust becomes irrelevant.”
The banker asked,
“And the child?”
Richard smiled.
“Children don't control corporations.”
The banker hesitated.
“What if the trust activates?”
Richard leaned forward.
“Then it becomes a legal problem.”
“And how will you solve it?”
Richard looked directly into the camera.
“I already have.”
The video ended.
Ethan stared at the screen.
“What does that mean?”
Derek looked away.
Ethan turned.
“Derek.”
Derek said nothing.
“Tell me.”
Derek's face was pale.
“Dad hired a doctor.”
Olivia's expression changed.
“For what?”
Derek swallowed.
“To declare Aria medically incapable of inheriting.”
Silence.
Ethan's blood ran cold.
“What?”
“He planned to create a medical record.”
“To say she couldn't manage the trust.”
“She wouldn't need to manage it,” Ethan said.
Derek shook his head.
“The trustee would be replaced.”
“By whom?”
Derek looked at Ethan.
“Dad.”
Ethan stood.
“No.”
Samuel grabbed his arm.
“Don't react emotionally.”
“He was going to manipulate my daughter's medical records.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he needs control.”
Ethan looked at Aria.
She slept peacefully.
Too young to know that powerful men were already fighting over her future.
Olivia stood beside Ethan.
“We protect her.”
Ethan nodded.
“We protect her.”
Helen closed the laptop.
“Then we need to move.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere Richard can't reach.”
Samuel shook his head.
“There is nowhere he can't reach.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Then what do we do?”
Samuel smiled.
“We stop running.”
Three hours later, Ethan entered the headquarters of Hale International.
This time, he didn't come alone.
Helen was beside him.
Samuel followed.
Behind them were three federal investigators.
And at the center of it all was Ethan.
The boardroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Richard stood.
“What are you doing here?”
Ethan placed a folder on the table.
“Taking back what you stole.”
Richard laughed.
“You've been suspended.”
“Legally.”
Richard's smile disappeared.
“Leave.”
“No.”
Ethan looked around the room.
“Before we begin, I'd like everyone to see something.”
He connected the flash drive.
The screen came alive.
Richard's private recordings appeared.
The board watched.
No one spoke.
The first video ended.
Then the second.
Then the third.
By the fourth, several directors were visibly shaken.
Richard's face had turned white.
“Where did you get those?”
Ethan looked at Derek.
Richard followed his gaze.
His face changed.
“You.”
Derek stood.
“I’m sorry, Dad.”
Richard stared at him.
“You ungrateful little—”
“Enough.”
Ethan's voice cut through the room.
He placed another document on the table.
“The original trust has activated.”
Richard froze.
“What?”
“My daughter was born.”
Samuel stepped forward.
“The trust is now legally enforceable.”
Richard looked at him.
“You.”
Samuel nodded.
“Hello, Richard.”
Richard's face collapsed.
For the first time, the man who had controlled everyone in the room looked powerless.
Ethan continued.
“You no longer control Hale International.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“You think a piece of paper can stop me?”
“No.”
Ethan looked directly into his eyes.
“The evidence can.”
Federal investigators stepped forward.
One placed a document in front of Richard.
“Mr. Hale, you're being investigated for financial fraud, conspiracy, falsification of corporate records, and attempted interference with a protected trust.”
Richard stared at Ethan.
“You're destroying your own family.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
He looked toward the door.
Olivia stood there holding Aria.
Ethan smiled.
“I'm saving it.”
Richard stared at the baby.
His face filled with hatred.
Then something unexpected happened.
Derek stepped between Richard and Aria.
“You're never getting near her.”
Richard looked at his younger son.
“You'll regret this.”
Derek shook his head.
“I already regret everything.”
The investigators escorted Richard away.
As he passed Ethan, he stopped.
“You think you've won.”
Ethan didn't answer.
Richard leaned closer.
“You haven't seen the last of me.”
Ethan looked him directly in the eye.
“Maybe.”
Then he stepped aside.
“But you have seen the last of me running.”
Richard was taken away.
The boardroom doors closed.
Silence returned.
Ethan looked at Olivia.
She smiled.
Aria opened her tiny eyes.
Ethan walked toward them.
For the first time, the future didn't look like a threat.
It looked like something worth fighting for.
But as they left the building, Ethan noticed one final message on his phone.
An anonymous text.
RICHARD WAS NEVER THE HIGHEST PERSON IN THE CHAIN.
Ethan stopped walking.
Another message appeared.
YOU JUST REMOVED THE WRONG MAN.
Then a third.
ASK WHO REALLY OWNS BLACKRIDGE.
Ethan looked at Samuel.
Samuel's expression changed.
“That's impossible.”
“What?”
Samuel stared at the message.
“Blackridge has another owner.”
“Who?”
Samuel slowly looked toward the city skyline.
“I thought he was dead.”
Ethan's stomach tightened.
“Who?”
Samuel whispered one name.
“Jonathan Hale.”
Ethan froze.
His great-grandfather.
The man who had supposedly died thirty-five years ago.
The man who had created the trust.
The man whose fortune had started everything.
Ethan looked at Aria.
Then toward the distant skyline.
The war wasn't over.
Richard had been only one piece.
And somewhere in the shadows, someone who had supposedly been dead for decades was still moving the pieces.
May you like
The Hale empire had just survived its first battle.
But the real enemy had finally revealed himself.
