CHAPTER 10 — THE HOUSE BENEATH THE CITY

The first thing Ethan felt was silence.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Silence.

The kind that comes before a storm.

Olivia sat across from him in the armored vehicle, staring at the empty baby blanket she had refused to let go of.

Aria was gone.

Every few seconds, Olivia pressed the blanket against her chest as though the familiar scent might somehow bring their daughter back.

Ethan watched her.

He wanted to promise everything would be fine.

But he had learned the hard way that promises meant nothing when powerful people were determined to destroy you.

So he said only one thing.

“We're bringing her home.”

Olivia looked at him.

“You swear?”

Ethan took her hand.

“I swear.”

Across from them, Samuel sat with his head lowered.

Daniel was driving.

The city passed outside the darkened windows.

Samuel finally spoke.

“The Cross estate is beneath the old financial district.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Why didn't anyone know about it?”

“Because there was never supposed to be an estate.”

“What is it?”

“A private underground complex.”

“How deep?”

“Seven levels.”

Ethan frowned.

“Seven?”

“Yes.”

“What is down there?”

Samuel hesitated.

“Archives.”

“More archives?”

“Not like the Hale archive.”

“What then?”

Samuel looked at Olivia.

“People.”

Olivia's expression changed.

“What do you mean?”

“Victor didn't build the complex only to store documents.”

Samuel's voice became quieter.

“He built it to hide people.”

The armored vehicle stopped beneath an abandoned parking structure.

Daniel killed the engine.

“We're here.”

Ethan looked around.

Nothing.

Concrete pillars.

Broken lights.

Empty parking spaces.

Samuel stepped out.

“Follow me.”

They crossed the garage.

Samuel stopped beside a concrete wall.

He pressed his palm against a section of metal.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

A hidden panel opened.

Olivia stared.

“How did you know that was there?”

“I helped design the original system.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You worked with Victor.”

“Once.”

“You keep saying that.”

Samuel's face tightened.

“Because I keep remembering things I wish I could forget.”

The door opened.

Beyond it was darkness.

They entered.

The door closed behind them.

Lights slowly came alive.

A long underground corridor stretched ahead.

Steel walls.

Security cameras.

Heavy doors.

The deeper they walked, the colder it became.

Then Ethan noticed something.

Names.

Hundreds of names were engraved into the walls.

“What are those?”

Samuel stopped.

“People who disappeared.”

Ethan's stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“They knew too much.”

Olivia looked at him.

“You're telling me Victor imprisoned people down here?”

“Some were imprisoned.”

“Some?”

Samuel nodded.

“Others were paid.”

“For what?”

“To disappear.”

They reached the first security checkpoint.

Daniel opened a panel.

“I need a code.”

Samuel gave him six numbers.

The lock opened.

They moved forward.

At the second door, Samuel stopped.

“This is where I turn back.”

Ethan stared.

“No.”

“I can't go farther.”

“Why?”

Samuel looked at the door.

“Because this is where I betrayed your mother.”

Ethan's expression hardened.

“What did you do?”

Samuel took a breath.

“She came here.”

“When?”

“Three weeks before she died.”

“Why?”

“She had discovered the Cross family records.”

“What did she want?”

“To return the original assets.”

Ethan frowned.

“Return them to Victor?”

“No.”

“To the victims.”

Ethan stared.

“She wanted to dismantle the empire.”

Samuel nodded.

“Piece by piece.”

“Then why didn't she?”

“Because she discovered something.”

“What?”

“Jonathan had already transferred the assets.”

“To where?”

Samuel looked at him.

“To you.”

Ethan froze.

“Me?”

“Your mother knew that one day you would become the legal owner.”

“And she protected the assets until I was old enough.”

“Yes.”

“But why did she need Victor?”

“She didn't.”

Samuel looked down.

“Victor needed her.”

A sound echoed from the corridor.

Everyone froze.

Footsteps.

Approaching.

Daniel raised his weapon.

Ethan pulled Olivia behind him.

The footsteps stopped.

A man appeared from the darkness.

Old.

Thin.

Wearing a prison uniform.

Ethan recognized him.

“Dad?”

Richard Hale stood before them.

His face was bruised.

His clothes were torn.

He looked nothing like the powerful man who had once ruled Hale International.

Ethan stared.

“How did you get here?”

Richard looked at Samuel.

“Your friend brought me.”

Samuel shook his head.

“I didn't.”

Richard smiled bitterly.

“Then Victor did.”

Olivia stepped forward.

“Where is Aria?”

Richard's expression changed.

“She is alive.”

“Where?”

“Level Seven.”

Ethan moved toward him.

“Take me there.”

Richard shook his head.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

“No.”

Richard grabbed Ethan's arm.

“Victor doesn't want money.”

Ethan pulled free.

“I know.”

Richard stared.

“He wants the Cross bloodline.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why?”

Richard looked toward Olivia.

“Because your daughter is the last person who can legally unlock the original Cross trust.”

Ethan's face hardened.

“We know.”

“No.”

Richard shook his head.

“You don't.”

He stepped closer.

“Your daughter isn't simply the heir.”

“She is the legal owner of everything.”

Ethan stared.

Richard continued.

“Everything Jonathan stole.”

“Everything Blackridge hid.”

“Everything Victor wants.”

“All of it belongs to Aria.”

Olivia's voice trembled.

“Why?”

“Because your mother changed the trust.”

“When?”

“The night she died.”

Ethan's heart stopped.

“What did she change?”

Richard looked away.

“She removed the Hale family.”

Silence.

“She made Aria the sole beneficiary.”

Ethan stared.

“But Aria wasn't born yet.”

Richard nodded.

“Exactly.”

A memory struck Ethan.

His mother's voice.

A childhood memory.

She had once told him:

“The person who comes after you may be the one who saves everything.”

He had never understood.

Now he did.

His mother had known.

She had known there would be a child.

She had known the trust would activate.

She had known Richard would try to destroy it.

And she had known Victor would eventually return.

Ethan looked at Richard.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew all these years.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe my mother died because of an accident.”

Richard's eyes filled with something Ethan had never seen before.

Shame.

“She didn't.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

Richard whispered,

“She was murdered.”

Olivia covered her mouth.

Ethan couldn't breathe.

“By who?”

Richard looked at him.

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“No.”

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I saw the car.”

“What happened?”

“It wasn't a crash.”

Ethan's heart pounded.

“What was it?”

“A setup.”

“Who?”

Richard whispered,

“Victor.”

The corridor suddenly shook.

An explosion.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Daniel shouted,

“Move!”

Richard grabbed Ethan.

“Victor knows we're here.”

“How?”

Richard smiled bitterly.

“Because he wanted you to come.”

Ethan froze.

“This was a trap.”

“Yes.”

“Then where is Aria?”

Richard looked toward the elevator.

“Waiting.”

They rushed toward the elevator.

Richard entered a code.

The doors opened.

Level numbers appeared.

Then:

7

The elevator descended.

No one spoke.

Olivia held the baby blanket.

Ethan stared at the numbers.

Seven.

Six.

Five.

He felt his heart pounding harder with every floor.

When the elevator stopped, the doors opened.

A vast chamber stretched before them.

At the center was a glass enclosure.

Inside was Aria.

Alive.

Awake.

Crying softly.

Olivia screamed.

“ARIA!”

She ran toward the glass.

Ethan followed.

A steel barrier prevented them from reaching her.

Victor's voice filled the room.

“Beautiful, isn't she?”

Ethan turned.

Victor stood on a balcony above them.

Dressed in a black suit.

Calm.

Smiling.

“You took my daughter.”

Victor nodded.

“And now she's going to give me back what was stolen.”

Ethan shouted,

“Let her go!”

Victor laughed.

“You still think this is about revenge.”

He walked to the railing.

“This is about restitution.”

Ethan stared.

“You murdered my mother.”

Victor's face became cold.

“She betrayed me.”

“She chose my father.”

“No.”

Victor's voice cracked.

“She chose the Hale name.”

He looked at Olivia.

“And then she chose you.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“She chose her family.”

Victor shook his head.

“She chose a lie.”

The glass enclosure opened.

Olivia rushed inside.

She grabbed Aria.

The baby immediately stopped crying.

Olivia pressed her against her chest.

“My baby.”

Ethan entered behind her.

For a moment, nothing else mattered.

Aria was alive.

Warm.

Safe.

Ethan kissed her forehead.

Then he heard Victor.

“You have ten minutes.”

Ethan looked up.

“For what?”

“To decide.”

Victor pointed toward a large screen.

Two documents appeared.

The first:

HALE FAMILY TRUST

The second:

CROSS FAMILY TRUST

Victor continued.

“Your daughter can activate one.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why only one?”

“Because the original agreement contains a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Which family inherits the assets.”

Olivia looked at Ethan.

Ethan stared at the screen.

The Hale trust controlled the empire.

The Cross trust represented the original stolen fortune.

One choice would preserve the Hale empire.

The other would return everything to the Cross family.

Victor smiled.

“Choose.”

Ethan shook his head.

“This isn't a choice.”

“It is.”

“No.”

He pointed at the documents.

“You said Aria owns everything.”

“She does.”

“Then she decides.”

Victor smiled.

“She is an infant.”

“She has legal authority.”

Victor laughed.

“Not until she reaches adulthood.”

Ethan looked at Richard.

“Then the trustee decides.”

Richard's expression changed.

Victor smiled.

“Exactly.”

He looked at Olivia.

“The trustee.”

Olivia froze.

Victor nodded.

“Your wife.”

Ethan understood.

Victor hadn't kidnapped Aria to force Ethan.

He had kidnapped Aria to force Olivia.

The woman who had no desire for wealth.

The woman Ethan's mother had chosen precisely because she couldn't be corrupted.

Victor wanted her to choose.

Hale.

Or Cross.

Power.

Or justice.

Family.

Or truth.

Olivia stared at the documents.

Victor spoke softly.

“Choose the Cross trust, and everything Jonathan stole returns to my family.”

“And the Hale empire collapses.”

“Choose the Hale trust…”

He smiled.

“And you become exactly like the people you hate.”

Olivia looked at Ethan.

Tears filled her eyes.

“What do we do?”

Ethan walked toward her.

“You don't choose.”

Victor frowned.

“What?”

Ethan looked at the screen.

“We reject the entire system.”

Victor laughed.

“You can't.”

“We can.”

“How?”

Ethan pointed toward the archive.

“The truth.”

He turned toward Samuel.

“Do you have access to the original ledger?”

Samuel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then release it.”

Samuel froze.

“All of it?”

“All of it.”

Richard stared.

“You'll destroy the empire.”

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.”

Olivia looked at him.

Ethan took her hand.

“An empire built on stolen lives doesn't deserve to survive.”

Victor's smile disappeared.

“You would destroy your own family fortune?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

Ethan looked at Aria.

“For her.”

Samuel opened the archive system.

The Black Ledger appeared.

Thousands of names.

Payments.

Contracts.

Secret agreements.

Illegal transfers.

Every hidden transaction.

Samuel hesitated.

Ethan said,

“Release it.”

Samuel pressed the key.

The files began uploading.

One server.

Then another.

Then thousands.

Across the world, journalists received encrypted packages.

Federal agencies received copies.

Courts received evidence.

Investigators received financial records.

The Black Ledger was no longer hidden.

It was public.

Victor stared at the screen.

“No.”

Ethan watched him.

“You wanted the truth.”

Victor shook his head.

“You don't understand what you've done.”

Ethan nodded.

“I do.”

The screen filled with headlines.

HIDDEN BILLIONS EXPOSED

BLACKRIDGE NETWORK REVEALED

HALE AND CROSS FAMILY FINANCIAL EMPIRE UNDER INVESTIGATION

Victor turned toward the exit.

Security officers appeared.

He stopped.

They weren't his men.

Federal agents surrounded the balcony.

Victor looked at Ethan.

“You think this ends here?”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Aria.

“It begins here.”

Victor was arrested.

Richard was taken into custody again.

But before he left, he looked at Ethan.

“You did what your mother couldn't.”

Ethan stared.

“What?”

“You chose the truth over the fortune.”

Richard lowered his head.

“I'm sorry.”

Ethan said nothing.

Richard was escorted away.

Hours later, Ethan and Olivia emerged from the underground complex.

The sun was rising.

Aria slept peacefully in Olivia's arms.

Samuel stood beside them.

Ethan looked at him.

“You're not forgiven.”

“I know.”

“But you helped us tonight.”

Samuel nodded.

“I owed your mother that.”

Ethan looked toward the city.

“What happens now?”

Samuel smiled sadly.

“The empire falls.”

Olivia looked at Ethan.

“And us?”

Ethan smiled.

“We rebuild.”

But before they could leave, Samuel's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at Ethan.

“The Black Ledger contains one final name.”

“Whose?”

Samuel swallowed.

“Your mother.”

Ethan froze.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“She received payments from Blackridge.”

Olivia frowned.

“My mother would never.”

Samuel shook his head.

“I know.”

“Then why is her name there?”

Samuel looked at the document.

“I don't know.”

Ethan took the phone.

At the bottom of the record was a transaction.

OLIVIA HALE — $50,000,000

Date:

Three days before her death.

Ethan stared.

His mother's name.

Fifty million dollars.

Blackridge.

Three days before she died.

Olivia whispered,

“She didn't take that money.”

Ethan looked at Samuel.

“Then who did?”

Samuel's face became pale.

The answer appeared beneath the transaction.

RECIPIENT: UNKNOWN TRUST ACCOUNT

Ethan's blood ran cold.

Someone had moved fifty million dollars through his mother's name.

Someone had done it three days before her death.

And if the transaction was real, then his mother's murder wasn't the end of the conspiracy.

It was the beginning.

Ethan looked at Olivia.

“We're not finished.”

She nodded.

Aria stirred in her arms.

Ethan gently touched his daughter's cheek.

“No.”

He whispered.

“Not until we know the truth.”

Far beneath the city, the abandoned Cross complex remained silent.

But on one forgotten monitor, a red light blinked.

A file opened automatically.

PROJECT OLIVIA

Then another line appeared.

PHASE TWO: ACTIVE

And beneath it:

SUBJECT: ARIA HALE

The screen went black.

May you like

The war had changed.

But it wasn't over.
