CHAPTER 8 — THE PRISONER WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

The prison was surrounded by fog when Ethan arrived.

Gray walls rose behind layers of razor wire.

Floodlights cut through the darkness.

Every entrance was guarded.

Every movement was recorded.

And somewhere inside that fortress sat the man Ethan had spent most of his life trying to escape.

Richard Hale.

His father.

His enemy.

And, for the moment, the only person who might know how to stop Victor Cross.

Ethan stepped out of the car.

Olivia remained inside with Aria.

Samuel stood beside him.

“You don't have to do this alone,” Samuel said.

Ethan looked at the prison.

“Yes, I do.”

Samuel shook his head.

“No.”

Ethan turned.

“Why?”

“Because Richard will use every weakness you have.”

Ethan's expression hardened.

“Then I'll give him none.”

Samuel placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Remember why you're here.”

Ethan looked toward the car.

Through the tinted window, he could see Olivia holding Aria.

“For my daughter.”

“Exactly.”

The interrogation room smelled of cold steel and disinfectant.

Richard sat behind the table.

His hands were cuffed.

His expensive suit was gone.

His hair was disheveled.

But his eyes were unchanged.

Cold.

Calculating.

When Ethan entered, Richard smiled.

“I knew you'd come.”

Ethan sat opposite him.

“You have seventy-two hours.”

Richard's smile faded.

“Who told you?”

“Victor.”

Richard's face changed.

Only for a second.

But Ethan noticed.

“You know him.”

Richard leaned back.

“I know many people.”

“Victor Cross.”

Silence.

Ethan leaned forward.

“You know exactly who he is.”

Richard looked at the wall.

Then at Ethan.

“You shouldn't have come here.”

“I need the master key.”

Richard laughed.

“Of course you do.”

“Where is it?”

“Safe.”

“Where?”

Richard stared at him.

“Why should I help you?”

“Because Victor is going to destroy everything.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

“Victor isn't going to destroy everything.”

He leaned forward.

“He's going to take everything.”

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“That includes Aria.”

Richard's expression changed.

“Is she safe?”

The question surprised Ethan.

“You care?”

Richard looked away.

“Answer me.”

“For now.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“Then you have very little time.”

Ethan placed the altered trust document on the table.

“Victor changed the beneficiary.”

Richard studied it.

“He couldn't have.”

“He did.”

“No.”

“You said Blackridge couldn't be accessed without the master key.”

“It can't.”

“Then how did he change it?”

Richard looked at the document again.

“This isn't the original.”

“We know.”

“This is a mirror.”

“What?”

“A digital mirror.”

Richard tapped the page.

“Someone created a duplicate trust system.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why?”

“To create a legal conflict.”

“So Aria's inheritance gets frozen.”

“Yes.”

“Then Victor wins.”

“Not immediately.”

Richard looked at him.

“He still needs the original master key.”

“Where is it?”

Richard smiled.

“You're asking the wrong question.”

“What question should I ask?”

“Who has it?”

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

Richard's voice became quiet.

“Your mother.”

Ethan froze.

“She died twenty-three years ago.”

Richard shook his head.

“Not the key.”

He looked directly into Ethan's eyes.

“The person she gave it to.”

Ethan's heart began pounding.

“Who?”

Richard didn't answer.

“Tell me.”

Richard leaned back.

“Your mother trusted one person more than anyone.”

Ethan whispered,

“Daniel?”

“No.”

“Samuel?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Richard smiled.

“Evelyn Cross.”

Ethan's mind raced.

Evelyn.

The accountant.

The woman who had survived Richard's network.

The woman who knew about his mother's investigation.

The woman who had sent him toward the truth.

“Why would my mother give her the key?”

“Because Evelyn was the only person Richard couldn't control.”

Ethan stood.

“Where is she?”

Richard laughed.

“You're still thinking like a Hale.”

“What does that mean?”

“You think every secret has a location.”

He leaned forward.

“Some secrets have a person.”

Ethan stared.

“What are you saying?”

Richard's voice dropped.

“Evelyn isn't hiding the key.”

“She is the key.”

Outside the prison, Ethan called Samuel.

“Find Evelyn.”

Samuel went silent.

“Why?”

“She has the master key.”

“You're sure?”

“Richard says she does.”

“Richard lies.”

“I know.”

“Then why believe him?”

“Because he was afraid when I said Victor's name.”

Samuel paused.

“That changes things.”

“Find her.”

“I'll try.”

“Not try.”

Ethan's voice hardened.

“Find her.”

Evelyn Cross was gone.

Her house was empty.

The doors were unlocked.

The kitchen table still had a cup of tea sitting on it.

Fresh.

Steam rising.

Samuel walked through the rooms.

“She left minutes ago.”

Ethan looked around.

“How do you know?”

“The tea.”

Ethan noticed something.

A photograph on the wall had been removed.

He touched the empty space.

“What was here?”

Samuel stared.

“Her brother.”

“Victor?”

“Yes.”

Ethan turned.

“You said Victor was supposed to be dead.”

“I thought he was.”

“When did you last see him?”

“Twenty-three years ago.”

“Before my mother's death?”

“Yes.”

Ethan looked at the empty frame.

“Then he knew her.”

Samuel nodded.

“More than knew her.”

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Samuel hesitated.

“Victor was your mother's legal advisor before I was.”

Ethan stared.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I didn't know he survived.”

Ethan's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

A woman's voice.

“Ethan.”

“Evelyn?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“I don't have much time.”

“Where?”

“Don't come looking for me.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor is watching you.”

Ethan looked around.

“Where are you?”

She ignored the question.

“Your mother trusted me.”

“I know.”

“She gave me something.”

“The master key?”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

Ethan's heart raced.

“Where is it?”

“Not with me.”

“Then where?”

“I hid it.”

“Where?”

Evelyn's voice trembled.

“Somewhere only Aria can open.”

Ethan froze.

“What does that mean?”

“Your mother planned for this.”

“She knew Victor would come.”

“She knew Richard would try to take the empire.”

“And she knew one day you'd have a daughter.”

Ethan whispered,

“Where did she hide it?”

Evelyn answered:

“Under the first house your mother ever bought.”

The call ended.

Ethan immediately called Samuel.

“Find my mother's first property.”

Samuel hesitated.

“Ethan…”

“What?”

“We already did.”

“What?”

“It's gone.”

Ethan froze.

“What do you mean?”

“The property was demolished twelve years ago.”

Ethan's heart sank.

“Then where is the key?”

Samuel's voice became quiet.

“There is one thing left.”

“What?”

“The foundation.”

They drove through the night.

The property sat at the edge of an industrial district.

Nothing remained except broken concrete and weeds.

Ethan walked across the ruins.

He remembered the house.

His mother had bought it before she married Richard.

He had been a child.

There was a swing in the backyard.

A maple tree.

A small garden.

A place where she used to read to him.

Now there was nothing.

Ethan crouched.

His fingers brushed the dirt.

Then he noticed something.

A stone.

Different from the others.

He moved it.

Underneath was a metal plate.

Samuel knelt beside him.

“This is old.”

Ethan wiped the dirt away.

There was a symbol engraved into the metal.

A circle.

Inside it:

A.H.

Aria Hale.

Ethan stared.

“She knew.”

Samuel nodded.

“She expected Aria.”

They removed the plate.

Underneath was a small steel box.

Locked.

Ethan tried to open it.

Nothing.

Samuel examined the mechanism.

“This isn't a normal lock.”

“What is it?”

“Biometric.”

Ethan frowned.

“Whose?”

A voice answered behind them.

“Your daughter's.”

Ethan spun around.

Derek stood in the darkness.

Ethan's hand immediately moved toward his weapon.

“Derek?”

“I came to help.”

“Why?”

“Because I know where Aria's birth records are.”

Ethan lowered his hand.

“How?”

“Dad kept copies.”

“Where?”

“In his private vault.”

Samuel looked at him.

“Can you access it?”

Derek nodded.

“I know the code.”

Ethan stared at him.

“You've been keeping secrets.”

“I was afraid.”

“You're always afraid.”

Derek looked down.

“I know.”

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small device.

“I can unlock the vault.”

Ethan looked at the steel box.

“And this?”

Derek shook his head.

“That isn't for the vault.”

“What is it?”

Derek examined the box.

“It's a genetic lock.”

Ethan's heart sank.

“So only Aria can open it.”

“Yes.”

“She isn't here.”

Derek smiled faintly.

“Actually…”

A car door slammed behind them.

Olivia stepped out.

She was holding Aria.

Ethan's eyes widened.

“What are you doing here?”

Olivia walked toward him.

“You told me to stay safe.”

“I did.”

“So I brought security.”

She looked at the box.

“Is that it?”

“Yes.”

Olivia looked at Aria.

Then at Ethan.

“How do we open it?”

Ethan looked at the baby.

“I don't know.”

They returned to the secure house.

A specialist was called.

But no one could explain the lock.

Finally, Samuel remembered something.

“Your mother wasn't only a lawyer.”

“What?”

“She studied genetics.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why?”

“Because your grandfather believed the trust should only respond to the true bloodline.”

“So the lock recognizes blood.”

“Yes.”

Ethan looked at Aria.

“Can it be opened safely?”

The specialist nodded.

“It requires a small genetic sample.”

Olivia held Aria tighter.

“From her?”

“Yes.”

“We're not hurting her.”

“No.”

He showed them the device.

“A tiny swab.”

Olivia agreed.

Minutes later, the device scanned Aria's DNA.

The steel box clicked.

Everyone froze.

The lid opened.

Inside was a single object.

A brass key.

Old.

Heavy.

Engraved with the Hale family crest.

Underneath it was a letter.

Ethan opened it.

His mother's handwriting.

His hands began trembling.

Ethan,

If you're reading this, Aria has been born.

He swallowed.

Olivia moved closer.

The letter continued.

That means everything I feared has happened.

Richard found Blackridge.

Victor survived.

And the trust is finally active.

Ethan looked at Samuel.

Then continued.

The key does not open a vault.

It opens a person.

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

He read on.

The master key identifies the true trustee.

And the trustee is not you.

It is Olivia.

Olivia froze.

“What?”

Ethan stared at her.

The letter continued.

I chose Olivia because she has no interest in power.

She will protect Aria because she loves her, not because she wants the empire.

Olivia's eyes filled with tears.

Ethan continued reading.

If Richard comes for Aria, Olivia must activate the trust.

If Victor comes, she must destroy the Blackridge network.

And if both men come…

The next sentence was underlined.

Trust no Hale.

Ethan slowly lowered the letter.

Olivia stared at him.

“Your mother told you not to trust your own family.”

Ethan looked at Derek.

Derek looked away.

Then the house alarm exploded into life.

Red lights flashed.

Security personnel shouted.

“Movement at the north gate!”

Ethan grabbed his weapon.

“Who?”

The guard looked at the monitor.

“Multiple vehicles.”

“How many?”

“Six.”

A second guard shouted,

“They're cutting the power!”

The house went dark.

Olivia grabbed Aria.

Ethan moved in front of them.

Then every security monitor flickered on.

Victor Cross appeared on the screens.

He smiled.

“Good evening.”

Ethan stared.

Victor continued.

“I knew you'd find the key.”

Ethan's blood ran cold.

“How?”

“Because your mother always left clues.”

He leaned closer to the camera.

“She wanted you to follow them.”

“Why?”

“To lead you to me.”

Ethan looked at the key.

Victor smiled.

“Bring it.”

“No.”

“Then I'll come take it.”

“You'll never get near my daughter.”

Victor's expression became cold.

“You still don't understand.”

He paused.

“I don't need to touch Aria.”

The screen changed.

A live video appeared.

Ethan saw the hospital.

Then another camera.

The Hale International headquarters.

Then the prison.

Then the streets around them.

Victor had access to everything.

“I own the cameras.”

“I own the servers.”

“I own the people.”

He smiled.

“And soon, I'll own the trust.”

Ethan stepped closer to the screen.

“You're wrong.”

Victor laughed.

“Am I?”

Ethan held up the brass key.

“My mother left this for us.”

Victor's face changed.

For the first time, fear appeared in his eyes.

Ethan noticed.

“You're afraid.”

Victor's smile disappeared.

“No.”

“You are.”

Ethan held the key tighter.

“Because whatever this opens…”

He stared directly into the camera.

“…you don't have it.”

Victor stared back.

Then he said something that made Ethan's blood freeze.

“I don't need the key.”

“I need Olivia.”

The screen went black.

A second later, the front door exploded inward.

Men stormed the house.

Ethan grabbed Olivia.

“Run!”

They raced toward the underground passage.

Derek stayed behind.

Ethan turned.

“Derek!”

Derek looked at him.

“Go!”

“You're coming with us.”

“No.”

He pulled the door shut.

“I owe you this.”

Gunfire erupted behind them.

Olivia screamed.

Ethan dragged her into the tunnel.

They ran.

At the end of the passage was a steel door.

Ethan opened it.

They emerged into the forest.

Samuel was waiting.

“Where's Derek?”

Ethan turned.

He heard another explosion.

The house disappeared behind smoke.

Ethan's face went pale.

“Derek.”

Olivia grabbed his arm.

“You can't go back.”

“He's my brother.”

“He chose to stay.”

Ethan looked toward the burning house.

For years, Derek had been the symbol of everything Ethan hated.

The brother who had hurt Olivia.

The son who had obeyed Richard.

The man who had helped destroy their lives.

Yet tonight, Derek had stood between them and the people coming to kill them.

Ethan whispered,

“Hold on.”

Then his phone vibrated.

A message.

From Derek.

I'm alive.

Ethan exhaled.

Another message appeared.

But Victor has Olivia's location.

Ethan's heart stopped.

He looked at Olivia.

She was holding Aria.

Then the final message appeared.

HE'S COMING FOR HER NEXT.

Ethan's expression hardened.

He looked at the dark forest.

Victor had declared war.

The master key was in their hands.

The trust was active.

Richard was imprisoned.

Derek had finally chosen a side.

And Olivia was now the only person capable of activating the final protection left by Ethan's mother.

But there was something Ethan still didn't know.

The key was not merely a key.

It was evidence.

And whoever controlled it could expose every person connected to Blackridge.

Including someone Ethan trusted.

Someone who had been standing beside him since the beginning.

Someone who had already betrayed him once.

As the first light of dawn appeared beyond the trees, Samuel looked at Ethan and whispered:

“There's one name your mother never put in any file.”

Ethan turned.

“Whose?”

Samuel looked toward Olivia.

Then toward Aria.

And finally whispered:

“Mine.”

Ethan's face went blank.

Samuel's eyes filled with regret.

“I lied to you.”

The forest fell silent.

May you like

And Ethan realized that the greatest betrayal might not be coming from Richard or Victor at all.

It might have been beside him from the beginning.
