CHAPTER 12 — THE BLOODLINE THEY TRIED TO ERASE

The words on the screens remained for only three seconds.
Then every monitor went black.
The safehouse fell into darkness.
Aria's crying echoed from the nursery.
Olivia froze.
Ethan was already moving.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
“Olivia—”
“I'm coming with you.”
There was something different in her voice.
Not fear.
Not panic.
Determination.
Ethan looked at her for a moment.
Then nodded.
“Together.”
They reached the nursery.
Aria was awake, her tiny fists clenched as she cried.
Olivia rushed to the crib.
“Mommy's here.”
She lifted her daughter.
The crying slowly stopped.
Ethan stood at the doorway, watching.
Then the emergency lights flickered on.
Samuel appeared at the end of the hallway.
His face was grim.
“We've been breached.”
“How?”
“Someone bypassed the exterior security.”
“How many?”
“Unknown.”
Ethan looked at Olivia.
“Take Aria to the basement.”
“What about you?”
“I'll hold them.”
Olivia shook her head.
“No.”
“Olivia.”
“You're not leaving me.”
Ethan stared at her.
She tightened her arms around Aria.
“Not after everything.”
He finally nodded.
“Then we stay together.”
The first window shattered.
A security guard dropped behind the kitchen counter.
Daniel returned fire.
“Back door!”
Two men rushed through.
Daniel stopped them.
But more footsteps followed.
Ethan pulled Olivia into the safe corridor.
Samuel ran beside them.
“There's another exit beneath the library.”
“How far?”
“Thirty yards.”
They moved.
Then a voice came through the speakers.
Calm.
Almost amused.
“Running again, Ethan?”
Ethan stopped.
Victor.
“You've always been good at running.”
Ethan shouted,
“Show yourself!”
A camera turned toward him.
Victor appeared on the screen.
“You found your mother's recording.”
“Yes.”
“You found Olivia's records.”
“Yes.”
“And now you know about Charles.”
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
“Where is he?”
Victor smiled.
“You're asking the wrong question.”
“What question should I ask?”
“Why did your mother hide Olivia?”
Ethan froze.
Victor continued.
“Why did Evelyn Cross give up her daughter?”
Olivia stared at the screen.
Victor looked directly at her.
“Why did your mother allow you to believe she was dead?”
Olivia's face tightened.
“Tell me.”
Victor smiled.
“Because she knew what Charles would do if he discovered you existed.”
Olivia whispered,
“What?”
Victor's expression became cold.
“Your grandfather doesn't want the Cross bloodline to survive.”
The screen went black.
Olivia looked at Ethan.
“What does he mean?”
Ethan shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Samuel stepped forward.
“I do.”
They all turned.
Samuel looked exhausted.
“Charles Cross wasn't simply the founder of the Cross fortune.”
He paused.
“He was obsessed with bloodlines.”
Olivia stared.
“Why?”
“He believed wealth should never leave the family.”
“So?”
“He created a private registry.”
“A registry?”
“Every descendant.”
“Every marriage.”
“Every child.”
“Every genetic connection.”
Olivia looked down at Aria.
Samuel nodded.
“That's why they monitored you.”
“Because I was a Cross?”
“Yes.”
“And Aria?”
“She is the first child born from both bloodlines in generations.”
Ethan's face hardened.
“Which makes her valuable.”
“Extremely.”
Olivia's eyes filled with anger.
“She isn't valuable.”
“She is our daughter.”
Samuel nodded.
“I know.”
The library door opened.
They hurried inside.
Samuel pulled a book from the shelf.
A hidden staircase appeared.
They descended.
At the bottom was an old tunnel.
Ethan looked at Samuel.
“Where does this lead?”
“To the original Cross property.”
“You said it was destroyed.”
“The estate above ground was.”
“And below?”
Samuel nodded.
“The tunnels survived.”
They continued.
After several minutes, Ethan noticed old markings on the wall.
A letter.
C
Then another.
O
Then another.
L
Olivia frowned.
“What does that spell?”
Samuel stopped.
“COLLECTION.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Collection of what?”
Samuel pointed ahead.
A massive door stood at the end of the tunnel.
On it was an inscription.
ONLY THE BLOOD OF THE LAST DAUGHTER MAY ENTER.
Olivia stared.
“Last daughter?”
Samuel nodded.
“You.”
She looked at Aria.
“And now her.”
Ethan inserted the brass key.
Nothing happened.
Samuel shook his head.
“It's not the key.”
Olivia stepped forward.
She placed her hand against the door.
A faint light appeared.
Then the lock opened.
Everyone froze.
The door slowly moved.
Inside was a room filled with portraits.
Dozens.
Generations of Cross descendants.
Olivia walked forward.
She recognized Evelyn.
Then another woman.
Then another.
Finally, she saw a portrait of herself.
Taken when she was three.
Olivia stopped breathing.
“She knew.”
Ethan stood beside her.
“Your mother knew where you were.”
Olivia touched the portrait.
“Why did she leave me?”
A voice answered.
“Because I ordered her to.”
Everyone turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Tall.
Gray hair.
A cane in his hand.
His eyes were cold.
Charles Cross.
Olivia stared at him.
“My grandfather.”
Charles smiled.
“Hello, Olivia.”
Ethan stepped between them.
“You're Charles.”
“Yes.”
“You ordered Evelyn to abandon her daughter.”
“Yes.”
“You ordered my mother to disappear.”
Charles's eyes narrowed.
“Yes.”
“You created Blackridge.”
Charles smiled.
“Jonathan created Blackridge.”
“You controlled it.”
“I guided it.”
“You killed people.”
Charles's smile vanished.
“I removed threats.”
Ethan clenched his fists.
Olivia stepped forward.
“Why?”
Charles looked at her.
“Because your mother betrayed the family.”
“I was three years old.”
“You were an heir.”
“To what?”
“Everything.”
Olivia shook her head.
“I never wanted any of this.”
“I know.”
Charles smiled.
“That's why you were perfect.”
Olivia frowned.
“What?”
“You were innocent.”
He walked closer.
“You didn't understand money.”
“You didn't understand power.”
“You didn't understand the family.”
“You simply grew up.”
Charles looked at Aria.
“And then you gave birth to the perfect heir.”
Ethan's voice became dangerous.
“Don't look at my daughter.”
Charles ignored him.
“Aria carries the strongest remaining Cross genetic markers.”
Olivia stared.
“How do you know?”
“Because I've been watching her since before she was born.”
Ethan's anger erupted.
“You monitored my wife?”
“Yes.”
“My pregnancy?”
“Yes.”
“My daughter?”
“Yes.”
Ethan moved forward.
Charles's security men immediately raised their weapons.
Olivia grabbed Ethan's arm.
“Don't.”
Charles smiled.
“You see?”
He looked at Olivia.
“Even now, you're protecting him.”
“Because he's my husband.”
“No.”
Charles shook his head.
“Because you were trained to protect the weak.”
Olivia's expression changed.
“What?”
Charles stepped closer.
“Your mother didn't abandon you.”
“She trained you.”
“To do what?”
“To become the final trustee.”
Silence.
Samuel closed his eyes.
Ethan stared at Charles.
“You're lying.”
Charles smiled.
“Ask Samuel.”
Everyone turned.
Samuel remained silent.
Olivia's voice trembled.
“Is it true?”
Samuel nodded.
“Yes.”
Olivia stepped backward.
“No.”
“Your mother prepared you.”
“She taught you compassion.”
“She taught you restraint.”
“She taught you never to chase wealth.”
Olivia stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because she knew you would eventually inherit the Cross trust.”
Olivia shook her head.
“I never knew.”
“You weren't supposed to.”
Charles smiled.
“That was the point.”
A loud alarm sounded.
Charles looked toward the ceiling.
“Someone has breached the upper level.”
Ethan looked at him.
“Victor?”
Charles nodded.
“He has become impatient.”
“What does he want?”
“Your daughter.”
Ethan pulled Olivia behind him.
“He isn't getting her.”
Charles smiled.
“You still don't understand.”
“What?”
“Victor doesn't work for me anymore.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
“He stopped listening years ago.”
“Then who controls him?”
Charles looked toward the ceiling.
“No one.”
He paused.
“Victor believes he controls himself.”
“But he doesn't.”
“Who does?”
Charles looked directly at Olivia.
“You.”
Olivia stared.
“What?”
Charles smiled.
“Your mother designed the system so that the final Cross trustee could command every Blackridge asset.”
“Every account.”
“Every company.”
“Every operative.”
Olivia's face went pale.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you were the only one Charles couldn't corrupt.”
He paused.
“And because you would never choose power.”
The ceiling exploded.
Dust filled the room.
Security rushed in.
Victor's men entered.
Charles's guards fired.
Chaos erupted.
Ethan grabbed Olivia.
“Go!”
They ran through the portrait room.
Aria cried.
Olivia held her close.
Ethan fired toward the attackers.
“Left!”
They turned.
A hidden door opened.
Samuel followed.
They entered a narrow chamber.
The door closed.
Silence.
Olivia was breathing hard.
Ethan looked at her.
“You okay?”
She nodded.
Then she looked at Aria.
“Yes.”
Samuel appeared.
“There's one place Victor can't reach.”
“Where?”
“Your mother's sanctuary.”
Ethan frowned.
“Where is it?”
Samuel looked at Olivia.
“You know.”
Olivia shook her head.
“I've never been here.”
Samuel pointed toward the portrait of her mother.
Evelyn.
“Look at her hand.”
Olivia examined the portrait.
Evelyn was holding a small object.
A key.
But not the brass key.
A silver key.
Olivia touched the painting.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a letter.
Her name was written on it.
OLIVIA.
She opened it.
Her mother's handwriting appeared.
My daughter,
If you are reading this, then Charles has found you.
Olivia began to cry.
I am sorry.
I wanted to come home.
I wanted to hold you.
But I knew that if I returned, Charles would use you against me.
Olivia pressed the letter against her chest.
The next line made her stop.
Your father believes blood gives him ownership.
He is wrong.
Blood gives us responsibility.
Nothing more.
Olivia continued reading.
I created the final trust for you.
Not because you are a Cross.
Because you are kind.
And kindness is the one thing power cannot manufacture.
Olivia's tears fell onto the paper.
Then she reached the final paragraph.
If Aria is ever born, protect her.
If the Hale family comes for her, protect her.
If the Cross family comes for her, protect her.
If the world comes for her, stand between her and it.
Olivia whispered,
“Mom…”
The letter continued.
And if one day you must choose between the empire and your daughter, burn the empire.
Olivia closed her eyes.
Ethan took her hand.
She looked at him.
“I know what to do.”
They emerged from the chamber.
Charles was waiting.
He looked at Olivia.
“You found the letter.”
“Yes.”
“You know what it means.”
“Yes.”
“Then activate the trust.”
Olivia stared.
“Why?”
“Because I need control.”
“No.”
Charles's expression darkened.
“You don't understand what you're refusing.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“You could own everything.”
“I don't want it.”
“You could control the Cross empire.”
“I don't want it.”
“You could destroy your enemies.”
Olivia looked at Ethan.
Then at Aria.
“I want my family.”
Charles laughed.
“You are wasting your birthright.”
Olivia shook her head.
“No.”
She held up the letter.
“This is my birthright.”
Charles stared.
“What?”
“Choosing what kind of person I become.”
Victor entered the chamber.
His face was furious.
“Enough.”
Charles turned.
“You.”
Victor raised his weapon.
“You've controlled me long enough.”
Charles smiled.
“You think you are free?”
Victor fired.
Charles fell.
Ethan grabbed Olivia.
“Get down!”
Victor stood over Charles.
“I spent my entire life believing you were protecting me.”
Charles coughed.
“You were useful.”
Victor's face twisted.
“You destroyed my family.”
“No.”
Charles smiled.
“Your family destroyed itself.”
Victor raised the weapon.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Don't.”
Victor turned.
“You.”
Ethan stared at him.
“Your fight is with Charles.”
Victor laughed.
“My fight is with everyone.”
He pointed toward Aria.
“She is the last piece.”
Ethan moved between them.
“You'll never get her.”
Victor raised the weapon.
Then Olivia stepped forward.
“No.”
Victor looked at her.
Olivia's voice was calm.
“You want the Cross trust?”
“Yes.”
“You want Blackridge?”
“Yes.”
“You want the empire?”
“Yes.”
“Then take it.”
Victor froze.
Ethan stared at Olivia.
She continued.
“I'll give you everything.”
Victor smiled.
“Smart.”
Olivia raised the silver key.
“But there is one condition.”
“What?”
“You release everyone.”
Victor frowned.
“Everyone?”
“Every person trapped in Blackridge.”
“Every account.”
“Every prisoner.”
“Every document.”
“Every secret.”
Victor laughed.
“You think you can negotiate with me?”
Olivia looked directly into his eyes.
“I know I can.”
“How?”
She held up the silver key.
“Because I'm the final trustee.”
Victor's smile disappeared.
The room went silent.
Olivia turned toward the hidden console.
She inserted the key.
The system activated.
Every light in the chamber came alive.
Across the world, Blackridge systems unlocked.
Accounts opened.
Records released.
Names appeared.
Prisoners were identified.
Hidden properties were exposed.
Secret companies were frozen.
The entire network began collapsing.
Victor stared at the screens.
“No.”
Olivia pressed one final button.
TERMINATE BLACKRIDGE.
The system asked:
CONFIRM?
Olivia looked at Ethan.
He nodded.
She pressed:
YES.
Every Blackridge server shut down.
The empire disappeared in seconds.
Victor stood motionless.
“You destroyed everything.”
Olivia shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at Aria.
“I destroyed what was hurting people.”
Police sirens echoed above.
Charles was arrested.
Victor was arrested.
Richard was transferred into federal custody.
The Hale and Cross empires entered liquidation and restitution proceedings.
Millions of dollars were returned to victims.
Properties were restored.
Companies were restructured.
And for the first time in generations, the two families had no empire to fight over.
Only people.
Three months later, Olivia stood outside the old Hale estate.
The iron gates were open.
Not guarded.
Not threatening.
Open.
Ethan stood beside her.
Aria slept in his arms.
The old staircase remained inside the house.
But Olivia no longer feared it.
She walked toward it.
Placed her hand on the railing.
Then smiled.
“This house doesn't belong to them anymore.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Who does it belong to?”
Olivia looked toward the garden.
Children were playing.
Families were arriving.
Former employees.
Victims.
People who had nowhere else to go.
The estate had become a refuge.
A sanctuary.
Olivia smiled.
“Everyone.”
Ethan pulled her close.
And for the first time, the house felt warm.
But that peace lasted only until a black envelope arrived.
No name.
No address.
Inside was a single photograph.
Olivia's mother.
Standing beside another woman.
The woman looked exactly like Olivia.
But older.
Much older.
On the back of the photograph were five words:
YOUR MOTHER HAD ANOTHER DAUGHTER.
Ethan stared.
Olivia's hands began trembling.
“Another daughter?”
Then another photograph fell from the envelope.
This time, it showed a little girl.
Three years old.
Standing beside Evelyn Cross.
And written beneath the child's photograph was one name:
ARIA'S SISTER.
Olivia looked at Ethan.
Neither spoke.
Because the war had supposedly ended.
The empires were gone.
Blackridge had been destroyed.
Victor was imprisoned.
Charles was arrested.
Richard had lost everything.
Yet someone had just revealed a secret that could change the entire meaning of Olivia's life.
Her mother had not had one daughter.
May you like
She had two.
And the second daughter was still alive.
