Chapter 5 - The House In The Woods
The cabin stood alone among the trees.
Cold.
Silent.
Hidden.
Police surrounded the property before sunrise.
Natalie sat in the car, staring at the building.
Every instinct told her Maisie was inside.
Detective Reyes stopped beside her.
“You need to stay back.”
Natalie nodded.
But both of them knew she wouldn’t.
Because this was no longer just an investigation.
This was a promise.
The door opened slowly.
A figure appeared.
Vivian.
Her clothes were different.
Her perfect wedding appearance was gone.
For the first time, Natalie saw something underneath.
Panic.
Vivian raised her hands.
“I didn’t hurt her.”
Nobody moved.
“Where is Maisie?”
Vivian looked toward the cabin.
“She’s inside.”
Natalie rushed forward.
Detective Reyes stopped her.
“Wait.”
But Vivian suddenly smiled.
A strange, empty smile.
“You all think I’m the villain.”
Nobody answered.
“You don’t know what she told me.”
Natalie felt a chill.
“What did Maisie tell you?”
Vivian looked toward the cabin.
“She told me she hated me.”
The detective frowned.
“She’s seven.”
Vivian laughed softly.
“That’s what makes children dangerous.”
Natalie felt anger rise.
“She is a child.”
Vivian looked at her.
“No.”
Her voice became cold.
“She is the reason everything fell apart.”
Inside the cabin, a small sound came from upstairs.
A door opening.
Everyone turned.
Then Maisie appeared.
Her face was pale.
But she was standing.
She was alive.
Natalie ran toward her.
The little girl collapsed into her arms.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Maisie whispered something.
Something that changed everything.
“She didn’t take me because she hated me.”
Natalie held her tighter.
“Why then?”
Maisie looked toward Vivian.
“She wanted me to disappear.”
The cabin became silent.
Because everyone finally understood.
