Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind Vivian’s Smile

The police arrived twenty minutes later.
The wedding became something completely different.
The flowers remained.
The music stopped.
The guests whispered.
The perfect ceremony turned into a crime scene.
Graham stood near the entrance, pale and confused.
He looked like a man watching his entire future collapse.
“My daughter wouldn’t just leave.”
Detective Olivia Reyes looked at him carefully.
“Children usually don’t disappear without a reason.”
Graham looked away.
Natalie noticed.
That tiny movement.
The hesitation.
The guilt.
She remembered every moment when Maisie had tried to speak.
Every time Graham explained it away.
Detective Reyes asked questions.
“When was the last time you saw Maisie?”
Graham answered.
“This morning.”
“Where?”
“At home.”
“Was Vivian with her?”
“Yes.”
The detective wrote something down.
Natalie watched Graham.
He noticed.
“What?”
She shook her head.
“Nothing.”
But it wasn’t nothing.
Because Graham had answered too quickly.
As if he had prepared the answer.
Later that afternoon, police searched the venue.
They found Vivian’s phone near the parking area.
The screen was cracked.
There was one unfinished message.
A message never sent.
To an unknown number.
“I can’t do this anymore. She knows.”
Natalie stared at the words.
Her stomach tightened.
“She knows what?”
Nobody answered.
Graham took a step back.
“That doesn’t prove anything.”
Detective Reyes looked at him.
“Mr. Whitmore, nobody said it did.”
But everyone understood.
Something had been hidden.
That evening, Natalie went through old memories.
Photos.
Messages.
Videos.
Anything involving Maisie and Vivian.
At first, she found nothing.
Vivian looked perfect.
Beautiful.
Patient.
Kind.
The kind of woman everyone trusted.
Then Natalie found a video.
It was from three months earlier.
A birthday party.
Maisie was laughing while opening presents.
Vivian stood behind her.
Smiling.
But when Maisie looked away…
The smile disappeared.
For less than two seconds.
Her face became cold.
Natalie replayed it.
Again.
And again.
She noticed something.
The way Vivian watched Maisie.
Not like a stepmother watching a child.
Like someone watching a problem.
The next morning, Detective Reyes called.
“We found something.”
Natalie drove immediately.
At the police station, Reyes placed a file on the table.
“Vivian Cross.”
Inside were newspaper articles.
Old photographs.
Previous complaints.
Nothing criminal.
But enough to raise questions.
“She was engaged once before,” Reyes said.
Natalie looked at the photo.
“Who was the man?”
Reyes hesitated.
“His name was Daniel Cross.”
“What happened?”
“He disappeared.”
Natalie looked up.
“Disappeared?”
“Seven years ago.”
The room went silent.
The same year Maisie was born.
Natalie felt something change.
A missing man.
A frightened child.
May you like
A woman who was about to marry into a family.
And now Vivian was gone too.
