Chapter 17 - The Fight To Save Maisie

The next morning, Maisie disappeared again.
This time there was no warning.
No note.
No message.
Just an empty bedroom.
The window was open.
Her favorite stuffed rabbit was left on the bed.
Natalie felt like she couldn’t breathe.
Not again.
Not after everything.
Graham searched the house.
“Maisie!”
His voice broke.
Detective Reyes arrived within minutes.
The entire city was placed on alert.
But this time, Graham was different.
He was not the man who waited for explanations.
He moved.
He fought.
He demanded answers.
Because he finally understood what Maisie had been telling him.
A child does not need perfect parents.
A child needs parents who listen.
Then Natalie found something.
A drawing.
Hidden under Maisie’s pillow.
A drawing she had made before disappearing.
It showed three people.
Natalie.
Graham.
And Maisie.
But behind them was a dark figure.
A man.
Beside the figure were two words.
“Uncle Daniel.”
Everyone froze.
Graham looked at the drawing.
“Daniel was never her uncle.”
Natalie looked at him.
“Maybe he wanted her to think he was.”
Detective Reyes immediately checked security footage.
A black vehicle had been recorded near the house.
The owner?
Daniel Whitmore.
The chase began.
Police tracked the vehicle to an abandoned warehouse.
The same warehouse where Graham met Marcus.
Inside, they found evidence.
Files.
Photographs.
Recordings.
And a small chair.
Natalie’s heart stopped.
“Maisie was here.”
Then they heard something.
A voice.
A child.
“Daddy?”
Graham ran.
“Maisie!”
Behind a locked door was his daughter.
Alive.
Terrified.
But standing.
He broke the lock.
And grabbed her.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Maisie whispered:
“Daddy…”
“Yes?”
“I knew you would come this time.”
Graham closed his eyes.
Because that sentence was both forgiveness and pain.
But before they could leave…
Daniel appeared.
May you like
Standing at the end of the hallway.
Smiling.
