CHAPTER 9 — THE WOMAN ADRIAN HID

Claire Bennett had learned something about secrets.

The biggest ones were never hidden because they were impossible to discover.

They were hidden because the truth would destroy too many people at once.

And standing in her childhood library, surrounded by the ghosts of her family’s past, Claire finally understood something.

Her marriage was never just about Adrian.

It was about everything that came before him.

Everything Victoria Hale had buried.

Everything her parents had tried to expose.

Everything Adrian had spent his entire life running from.

And now there was another name.

A name that made Adrian go silent.

Elena Hale.

Claire looked at the phone in her hand.

“Adrian.”

No answer.

Only silence.

That silence hurt more than a confession.

Because Adrian’s silence had always been his greatest weakness.

He thought silence protected people.

But Claire had learned something else.

Silence protected the person keeping the secret.

“Who is Elena Hale?”

Still nothing.

Claire’s expression changed.

“Adrian.”

Finally, his voice came.

Quiet.

“Claire…”

“No.”

She looked at Damian.

Then Victoria.

Then back at the phone.

“I am done discovering pieces of my own life from strangers.”

A pause.

“You owe me the truth.”

Adrian breathed out slowly.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

“I can’t.”

The answer immediately made her angry.

“You can’t?”

“Claire, listen to me.”

“No.”

Her voice became sharper.

“You don’t get to decide what I can handle.”

The room became silent.

Even Damian stopped smiling.

Because Claire was no longer the woman standing in the bridal suite.

She was not confused anymore.

She was not shocked.

She was angry.

A calm kind of anger.

The kind that came after too many betrayals.

“What is Elena Hale?”

Adrian did not answer.

So Claire asked again.

“Who is she?”

Finally, he whispered:

“My sister.”

The word changed everything.

Claire looked at Victoria.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another person erased.

“You have a sister too?”

Adrian’s voice was heavy.

“Yes.”

Damian smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Claire ignored him.

“How many people has your family erased?”

Nobody answered.

That was answer enough.

Adrian continued.

“Elena was born two years after Damian.”

Claire frowned.

“Another child?”

“Yes.”

“And everyone believed she died too?”

“No.”

The answer surprised her.

“No?”

“She disappeared.”

Claire felt a chill.

“Why?”

Adrian’s voice changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“Because Elena was the only person who knew what happened that night.”

The night of the fire.

Claire understood.

“She was there.”

“Yes.”

“Inside the house?”

“Yes.”

Claire looked at Damian.

“You knew.”

Damian nodded.

“She was there.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Damian smiled.

“Because I wanted Adrian to tell you.”

Claire looked back at the phone.

“Why?”

“Because he is the one who has spent twenty years protecting her.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

Adrian.

Protecting another secret.

Another person.

Another lie.

“Where is she now?”

Silence.

Then Adrian said:

“I don’t know.”

Damian laughed.

“You always say that.”

Adrian’s voice hardened.

“Because it’s true.”

“Is it?”

The two brothers stared at each other.

Claire watched them.

The resemblance was impossible to ignore.

Same eyes.

Same family.

Different scars.

Damian looked like the version of Adrian who had given up on forgiveness.

Adrian looked like the version who was still searching for it.

“What happened to Elena?”

Claire asked.

Adrian looked away.

“She disappeared the same night your parents died.”

Claire’s heart sank.

“Why?”

“Because she saw something.”

“What?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“I don’t know.”

Again.

That phrase.

Claire almost laughed.

“You don’t know anything.”

The words hurt him.

Because they were true.

“I know enough to know she was in danger.”

“From who?”

Silence.

Claire looked at Victoria.

Then Damian.

Then Adrian.

And suddenly she understood.

The reason nobody answered.

Because the answer was bigger than any one person.

“From all of you.”

Nobody spoke.

Claire nodded slowly.

“That’s what this is.”

She looked around the room.

“A family destroying itself to hide one mistake.”

Victoria’s expression changed.

“You are being emotional.”

Claire looked at her.

“No.”

Her voice was cold.

“I’m being logical.”

She stepped toward Victoria.

“You raised children who learned that secrets were more important than people.”

She turned toward Damian.

“You spent twenty years wanting revenge instead of justice.”

Then Adrian.

“And you loved me while lying to me.”

The words hit him.

Hard.

Because they were the ones he feared most.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Disappointment.

Claire looked at Adrian’s phone.

“I need to know one thing.”

“What?”

“Did you marry me because you loved me?”

Silence.

A long one.

Then:

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

The answer hurt because she believed him.

That was the worst part.

She believed he loved her.

And he still betrayed her.

“Then why?”

Adrian’s voice became almost broken.

“Because I thought if I stayed close to you, I could protect you.”

“From what?”

“My family.”

Claire looked at Damian.

“And now?”

Adrian answered quietly:

“Now I think I was the person you needed protection from.”

The honesty stunned her.

For the first time since the wedding night…

Adrian was not defending himself.

He was admitting what he had done.

Before Claire could respond, Damian stepped forward.

“You still don’t see it.”

Claire looked at him.

“See what?”

Damian looked at Adrian.

“My brother is telling you the truth.”

A pause.

“But not all of it.”

Adrian’s face changed.

“Damian.”

“No.”

Damian looked at Claire.

“She deserves to know.”

A cold feeling moved through Claire.

“What?”

Damian smiled.

“The fire was not an accident.”

Claire already knew that.

“But you think Adrian was just a witness.”

He stepped closer.

“He wasn’t.”

Claire looked at Adrian.

“Adrian?”

He said nothing.

Damian continued.

“Your husband was the reason your father trusted him.”

Claire frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means your father thought Adrian was trying to help him.”

A pause.

“But Adrian had already made a choice.”

Claire’s heart began beating faster.

“What choice?”

Damian looked directly at her.

“The night of the fire…”

His voice lowered.

“Adrian chose Victoria over your family.”

Claire turned toward Adrian.

“No.”

Adrian looked devastated.

“Claire…”

“Is it true?”

He could not answer.

And that was the answer.

Claire stepped backward.

Because suddenly the man who had saved her from the flames…

Was also the man who had helped create them.

Damian walked toward the door.

“You wanted the truth.”

Claire stared.

“Where are you going?”

“To find Elena.”

“Why?”

Damian smiled.

“Because when she comes back…”

A pause.

“She will tell you what Adrian refuses to.”

The door closed behind him.

Leaving Claire alone with Adrian.

And a truth she was not ready to hear.

Adrian looked at her.

“Claire.”

She did not answer.

“Please.”

Slowly, she turned.

Her eyes were different now.

The woman who had loved him was still there.

But she was buried beneath betrayal.

“Tell me one thing.”

Adrian waited.

“Did you know my parents would die that night?”

The question destroyed him.

Because there was only one answer.

One answer that would decide whether there was anything left between them.

Adrian whispered:

“No.”

Claire held her breath.

Then he continued:

“But I knew Victoria was capable of making it happen.”

The room went silent.

And Claire finally understood.

Adrian Hale was not the villain she imagined.

He was something far more dangerous.

May you like

He was a man who saw the darkness coming…

And did nothing to stop it.
