CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

Claire Bennett did not sleep that night.

Not because she was afraid of the dark.

Not because she was alone in a luxurious bridal suite overlooking one of the most expensive cities in the world.

She stayed awake because one name kept repeating inside her mind.

Victoria Hale.

The woman who was supposed to be dead.

Claire sat near the window as the first light of morning touched the skyline.

Her wedding dress was still hanging beside the bed.

The same dress that had represented a new beginning twelve hours ago.

Now it looked like a costume.

A performance.

A carefully designed illusion.

She had spent months believing she knew Adrian Hale.

She knew his favorite coffee.

She knew the song he always played when he was working late.

She knew the scar on his left hand from the accident he had when he was a teenager.

She knew the way he looked at her when he thought she was not watching.

But apparently…

She did not know the most important thing.

She did not know the monster hiding behind the perfect husband.

The bedroom door opened quietly.

Claire did not turn around.

She already knew it was Adrian.

“You’re awake.”

His voice was different in the morning.

Less commanding.

More human.

Claire slowly looked at him.

He had changed into a dark shirt and trousers.

No suit.

No wedding mask.

Just Adrian.

Or the closest version of him she had seen since the ceremony ended.

“Did you sleep?”

He asked.

Claire almost laughed.

“Did you?”

A pause.

Adrian looked away.

That answer was enough.

He had not slept either.

“You saw the name.”

It was not a question.

Claire stood.

“Yes.”

“And you’re angry.”

“No.”

That surprised him.

Claire walked toward the table where the folder remained.

“I’m not angry.”

She picked it up.

“I’m trying to understand.”

Adrian watched her carefully.

“Understand what?”

“Why my husband needed his dead mother’s approval to control his wife.”

His jaw tightened.

There it was again.

That reaction.

The small crack in the perfect image.

Claire noticed everything.

“I want the truth, Adrian.”

“You have the truth.”

“No.”

She placed the folder down.

“I have a list of rules.”

Her eyes met his.

“I have a whip on my wedding night.”

She stepped closer.

“And I have the name of a woman who supposedly died five years ago.”

A long silence filled the room.

Finally, Adrian sat down.

For the first time since last night…

He looked exhausted.

Not powerful.

Not intimidating.

Exhausted.

“My mother isn’t dead.”

Claire felt the words before she understood them.

The room seemed to become smaller.

“What?”

Adrian looked at the floor.

“She disappeared.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“I know.”

“Everyone believes she died.”

“Yes.”

“Your family held a funeral.”

“Yes.”

“Your father buried an empty coffin?”

Adrian looked up.

“Yes.”

Claire stared at him.

“Why?”

His answer came quietly.

“Because that was what she wanted.”

A cold feeling moved through Claire.

“Your mother wanted everyone to believe she was dead?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Adrian stood.

“Because Victoria Hale does not disappear.”

He walked toward the window.

“She prepares.”

Claire watched him.

“Prepare for what?”

Adrian did not answer immediately.

Outside, the city continued moving.

Cars.

People.

Life.

Completely unaware that inside this hotel room, a marriage had already become something else.

“My mother believed people were weak because they allowed emotions to control them.”

Claire remained silent.

“She believed love was a weakness.”

Adrian continued.

“She said affection made people vulnerable.”

His voice became quieter.

“She taught me that the person who cares less has the power.”

Claire felt something change.

For the first time, she was not looking at Adrian as an enemy.

She was looking at a man who had been damaged.

But damage did not excuse cruelty.

“You’re telling me your mother taught you how to hurt people?”

Adrian turned around.

“No.”

A pause.

“She taught me how to survive.”

Claire studied him.

“And you decided I needed to survive you?”

His expression changed.

A flash of guilt.

Only a second.

But it was there.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

Claire looked at the whip sitting on the table.

“That is a strange way of showing love.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked like he wanted to say something.

Something honest.

Something real.

But then the wall returned.

“The rules stay.”

Claire immediately noticed.

Not an apology.

Not regret.

A condition.

“The rules stay?”

“Yes.”

“Even after everything?”

“Yes.”

Claire nodded slowly.

She understood now.

Adrian was not ready to change.

Not yet.

“So this was all planned.”

Adrian said nothing.

“The wedding.”

Silence.

“The perfect husband act.”

Silence.

“The rules.”

Silence.

Claire stepped closer.

“Was marrying me part of your mother’s plan too?”

That question finally broke something.

Adrian looked at her.

And Claire saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Don’t ask questions you don’t want answered.”

The words were quiet.

But they carried a warning.

Claire smiled slightly.

Because now she knew.

She had found the real secret.

Not the rules.

Not the whip.

Not Victoria Hale.

The real secret was that Adrian Hale was afraid.

And powerful people only feared one thing.

Losing control.

“I’m going to find her.”

Adrian’s face changed instantly.

“No.”

The speed of his response confirmed everything.

Claire tilted her head.

“Why?”

“Because you don’t know what you’re looking for.”

“Then tell me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because once Victoria Hale enters your life…”

He stopped.

Claire waited.

“What?”

Adrian looked directly at her.

“You never get your old life back.”

The words should have frightened her.

Maybe they would have frightened another woman.

But Claire Bennett had never been someone who walked away from the truth.

Not when her instincts told her something was wrong.

Not when someone tried to hide information from her.

And especially not when that person was her own husband.

“I think,” Claire said softly,

“you’re forgetting something.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I’m your wife.”

He said nothing.

“I’m not your prisoner.”

A flicker of anger crossed his face.

Then disappeared.

Because he knew she was right.

Claire picked up her phone.

She opened her contacts.

Adrian watched.

“Who are you calling?”

“The one person who can answer my questions.”

His expression darkened.

“Who?”

Claire pressed the call button.

“Someone who knew Victoria Hale before she disappeared.”

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then a voice answered.

A voice Claire had never heard before.

But Adrian recognized immediately.

Because the color drained from his face.

“Hello, Claire.”

The voice was calm.

Older.

Controlled.

“You don’t know me yet.”

Claire looked at Adrian.

He looked terrified.

“But I know exactly who you are.”

The woman continued.

“And I know why Adrian married you.”

Claire’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“Who is this?”

A pause.

Then the answer came.

“My name is Eleanor Vale.”

Adrian whispered one word.

“No…”

Claire heard it.

And that was when she realized.

The woman on the phone was not just someone connected to Victoria Hale.

She was someone Adrian had spent years trying to escape.

“I was Victoria’s closest friend.”

Eleanor said.

“And Claire…”

Her voice lowered.

“Your husband did not choose you by accident.”

The room went silent.

“Your marriage was planned long before you met him.”

Claire looked at Adrian.

And for the first time since their wedding began…

She wondered if she had ever truly chosen Adrian Hale.

Or if someone else had chosen him for her.

The call continued.

But before Eleanor could explain everything…

The hotel room lights suddenly went out.

The phone signal disappeared.

And Adrian’s face turned completely pale.

May you like

Because he knew exactly what had happened.

Victoria Hale had found them.
