CHAPTER 17 — THE MAN BEHIND THE FIRE

The recording ended.
But nobody moved.
The final sentence remained in the air.
Heavy.
Impossible.
Cruel.
The person who wanted my daughter dead was Adrian Hale.
Claire stared at the device on the floor.
She did not hear the fire anymore.
She did not hear the collapsing walls.
She did not hear anyone breathing.
All she heard was her father’s voice.
The voice she had spent twenty years missing.
The voice that had just accused the man standing beside her.
Her husband.
Adrian.
Slowly, Claire turned.
He looked completely destroyed.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Destroyed.
“Say something.”
Her voice was quiet.
Adrian opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That hurt more than any explanation.
Because Claire had learned something about Adrian Hale.
When he wanted to manipulate.
When he wanted to hide.
When he wanted control.
He always had words.
But now…
He had none.
“Adrian.”
He finally looked at her.
“Claire…”
“No.”
She stepped back.
“Do not say my name like that.”
His expression broke.
“Because I don’t know what it means anymore.”
The flames continued spreading around them.
But the real damage had already happened.
“Did you try to kill me?”
Adrian shook his head immediately.
“No.”
The answer was fast.
Desperate.
Claire looked at him.
“Then why would my father say that?”
“I don’t know.”
The words came out.
But this time, even Adrian hated hearing them.
Claire laughed softly.
“You don’t know.”
A tear finally escaped.
Not because she believed him.
Because she wanted to.
And that was worse.
“You expect me to believe you after everything?”
“No.”
Adrian’s answer surprised her.
“I don’t.”
The honesty stopped her.
“I know what it looks like.”
He looked at the recording device.
“I know what I have done.”
A pause.
“But I did not try to kill you.”
Claire stared.
“Then tell me what happened.”
Adrian looked at Victoria.
Then Richard.
Then Elizabeth.
Everyone.
“All of you knew something.”
Nobody answered.
“Someone explain.”
Richard stepped forward.
“You are making an emotional mistake.”
Claire turned toward him.
“Not now.”
His expression hardened.
“You need to understand the difference between truth and manipulation.”
She looked at him.
“Funny.”
A bitter smile appeared.
“Because you have spent your entire life manipulating everyone.”
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“You are angry.”
“Yes.”
“Anger makes people careless.”
Claire stepped closer.
“No.”
Her voice became stronger.
“Secrets make people powerless.”
Silence.
“And I am done being powerless.”
For the first time…
Richard looked uncertain.
Claire noticed.
She had found another weakness.
Fear.
Not of losing money.
Not of losing power.
Fear of losing control of the story.
“Adrian.”
She looked at him.
“Tell me about the night of the fire.”
Adrian swallowed.
“I already told you.”
“No.”
She pointed at the recording.
“You told me what you remembered.”
A pause.
“Now tell me what you forgot.”
That sentence hit him.
Because everyone forgot something.
Especially people who survived trauma.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Then spoke.
“I was seventeen.”
The room became quiet.
“I arrived at your house because I thought your father had answers about my family.”
Claire listened.
“I saw Richard’s car outside.”
Richard’s expression changed.
“You never told me that.”
Adrian looked at him.
“I never trusted you.”
A small silence.
Claire noticed.
Interesting.
Adrian continued.
“I entered the house.”
“Your father was alive.”
Claire held her breath.
“He was injured.”
“How?”
“He had been attacked.”
“By who?”
Adrian looked down.
“I don’t know.”
Claire studied him.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it is true.”
A pause.
“But I know what happened next.”
He looked at the recording device.
“Someone started the fire.”
Claire waited.
“And?”
“I found you.”
Her expression softened slightly.
“You saved me.”
“Yes.”
“What happened after?”
Adrian’s face changed.
“I heard your father.”
Claire froze.
“He was calling my name.”
“Why?”
“He gave me something.”
“The key?”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“Something else.”
“What?”
“A warning.”
He looked at Claire.
“He said, ‘Do not let her find Claire.’”
Claire felt cold.
“Who?”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“Your mother.”
Elizabeth froze.
“No.”
Claire looked at her.
Again.
Another impossible piece.
Adrian continued.
“I thought he meant Victoria.”
“But?”
“But later I realized he was afraid of Elizabeth.”
Claire looked at her mother.
Elizabeth looked devastated.
“Why?”
Adrian answered:
“Because she knew where the evidence was.”
Silence.
Claire looked at Elizabeth.
“Did you?”
Elizabeth’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
The answer came quietly.
Everyone froze.
Claire whispered:
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Stop saying that.”
Elizabeth looked broken.
“I know.”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“You don’t.”
She looked around.
“Everyone here thinks protection means taking away my choices.”
A pause.
“It doesn’t.”
Nobody spoke.
Claire looked back at Adrian.
“So my father believed you were a threat.”
“Yes.”
“And you believed my mother was.”
“Yes.”
“And everyone was hiding different parts of the truth.”
“Yes.”
She nodded slowly.
“Then the question is simple.”
Everyone waited.
“Who actually started the fire?”
Silence.
Then the recording device suddenly activated again.
Nobody touched it.
Charles Bennett’s voice returned.
This time…
More urgent.
“If this recording is playing, then the first message has been discovered.”
Claire looked at the device.
Her father continued.
“Adrian was never the one who started the fire.”
Everyone froze.
Claire slowly looked at Adrian.
The recording continued.
“But he was manipulated into believing he was responsible.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
The pain on his face was immediate.
Charles continued.
“The person who caused the fire wanted everyone to blame Adrian.”
A pause.
“Because a guilty man is easier to control.”
Claire felt a chill.
“Who?”
The recording crackled.
Then Charles said:
“The person who controlled this entire family war…”
A pause.
“Was the person closest to me.”
Everyone looked at Elizabeth.
Her face went pale.
“No.”
Charles continued.
“My wife.”
Claire stopped breathing.
The recording ended.
The fire continued.
Nobody spoke.
Because the truth had changed again.
The person who destroyed the Bennett family was not Adrian.
Not Victoria.
Not Richard.
But the woman Claire had just found.
Her mother.
Elizabeth Bennett.
Claire stared at her.
“Mom.”
Elizabeth’s eyes filled with tears.
“I can explain.”
Claire shook her head slowly.
“No.”
A pause.
“I think I finally understand.”
She looked at everyone.
“All of you were protecting someone.”
Her eyes returned to Elizabeth.
“But you were protecting yourself.”
Elizabeth collapsed into a chair.
“I never wanted anyone to die.”
Claire’s voice was cold.
“But someone did.”
A sudden explosion came from downstairs.
The entire house shook.
Adrian grabbed Claire.
They fell away from the collapsing ceiling.
When the dust cleared…
The evidence container was gone.
Everyone looked around.
Impossible.
Someone had taken it.
During the chaos.
Richard immediately looked toward the exit.
Then smiled.
“Interesting.”
Claire noticed.
“You know who took it.”
Richard said nothing.
Adrian stood.
His face changed.
“No.”
Claire looked at him.
“What?”
Adrian stared at the open doorway.
A shadow disappeared into the night.
And he whispered the name.
“Elena.”
Everyone froze.
Claire looked at him.
“Your sister?”
Adrian nodded.
But his expression was not anger.
It was fear.
Because Elena had not stolen the evidence.
She had taken it to reveal something.
Something she had been hiding for twenty years.
Adrian whispered:
“She was the one person my father trusted.”
A pause.
“And the one person I never should have found.”
Claire stared into the darkness.
Because the final piece of the puzzle had moved.
And it was no longer in the hands of the enemy.
May you like
It was in the hands of the person who knew the truth from the beginning.
Elena Hale.
