CHAPTER 5 — THE SECRET BURIED WITH HER PARENTS

Claire Bennett did not speak for almost a full minute.

She simply stood there.

Looking at Adrian.

Waiting for him to take back the words.

Waiting for him to say he had misunderstood.

Waiting for anything that would make the world feel normal again.

But Adrian Hale did not move.

Because he knew.

He knew there was no way to explain this without destroying what remained between them.

“My parents…”

Claire’s voice was quiet.

“My parents died twenty years ago.”

Adrian nodded slightly.

“I know.”

“You knew how they died.”

Silence.

Claire felt her chest tighten.

“You knew.”

Adrian looked away.

“I knew what I was told.”

She stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I never had the full truth.”

Claire let out a short, bitter laugh.

“That is becoming your favorite sentence.”

Adrian accepted the accusation.

Because she was right.

Every answer he gave created another question.

Every truth revealed another lie.

Claire walked toward the table and picked up the folder again.

The rules.

The marriage contract.

The symbol of everything Adrian had tried to control.

She looked at the pages.

Then she looked back at him.

“Was I ever supposed to know?”

Adrian did not answer.

That was enough.

“No.”

His silence was confirmation.

Claire nodded slowly.

“So what was the plan?”

Adrian remained quiet.

“Marry me.”

Silence.

“Keep me close.”

Silence.

“Use my family’s name.”

Silence.

“Wait until I discovered whatever secret you needed.”

Silence.

Claire’s expression hardened.

“And after that?”

Adrian finally spoke.

“There was never supposed to be an after.”

The answer was worse than she expected.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian walked toward the window.

“It means Victoria believed emotions were dangerous.”

Claire folded her arms.

“She believed that.”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

A long pause.

“I believed her.”

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

Because Claire realized something.

Adrian was not pretending to be controlled.

He had been controlled for so long that he no longer knew where his own thoughts ended and his mother’s began.

But again…

Understanding was not forgiveness.

“You married me knowing this?”

“Yes.”

“And you still let me love you?”

His face changed.

A flicker of guilt.

“I tried not to.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

“I tried to keep distance.”

She shook her head.

“You were impossible to read.”

“I know.”

“You spent two years making me believe you were different.”

“I wanted to be.”

The words were quiet.

Almost painful.

Claire looked away.

Because that was the most dangerous thing about Adrian.

Not that he was cruel.

Not that he was cold.

It was that sometimes…

He sounded like he hated the person he had become.

And part of her wanted to believe there was still someone worth saving.

But then she remembered the locked door.

The rules.

The whip.

And she reminded herself.

Broken people could still break others.

“Tell me about my parents.”

Adrian looked surprised.

“What?”

“If this secret involves them, tell me.”

“I can’t.”

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“You can’t?”

“Not because I don’t want to.”

“Then why?”

“Because I don’t know everything.”

She studied him.

“Who does?”

Adrian did not answer.

Claire stepped closer.

“Who knows?”

His silence changed.

This time it was different.

It was hesitation.

Fear.

Finally, he said:

“My mother.”

Claire nodded.

Of course.

Victoria.

Everything always returned to Victoria.

“She knows everything.”

“Yes.”

“And she has been alive this entire time.”

“Yes.”

“Watching?”

“Yes.”

“Waiting?”

“Yes.”

Claire turned toward the window.

The city lights blurred slightly.

Her entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.

Her childhood.

Her family.

Her marriage.

Everything connected.

Then something occurred to her.

A memory.

A small one.

Something she had forgotten.

A conversation from when she was sixteen.

Her father had been arguing with someone on the phone.

She remembered his voice.

Angry.

Afraid.

And one sentence.

“You promised me this would end after Claire grew up.”

At the time, she thought it was about business.

Now…

She was not so sure.

Claire turned back.

“My father knew Victoria.”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“But your mother knew him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Adrian looked uncomfortable.

“Because your father helped my mother disappear.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

“After my father died, Victoria needed someone she trusted.”

“And she trusted my father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Adrian hesitated.

“Because your father owed her.”

Claire’s voice dropped.

“Owed her what?”

Adrian looked at her.

“The truth.”

The answer made no sense.

And somehow…

It made perfect sense.

“What truth?”

Before Adrian could answer, a sound came from downstairs.

A loud crash.

Then another.

Both of them turned.

Adrian immediately moved toward the door.

Claire noticed.

“What is it?”

His expression had changed.

The fear was gone.

Replaced by something else.

Concern.

“Someone broke into the hotel.”

Claire followed him.

“Security?”

“Disabled.”

“By who?”

Adrian looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

That answer frightened her more than anything else.

Because Adrian Hale always knew.

He knew threats.

He knew enemies.

He knew how to control situations.

But right now…

He was uncertain.

They stepped into the hallway.

The luxury hotel looked completely different.

The music from the wedding was gone.

The decorations remained.

White roses.

Golden lights.

Elegant tables.

But now there were security guards running.

Guests whispering.

Phones recording.

Chaos.

A hotel manager rushed toward Adrian.

“Mr. Hale.”

“What happened?”

The manager looked nervous.

“We found someone in your private suite downstairs.”

Adrian’s face changed.

“My private suite?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

The manager swallowed.

“She left this.”

He handed Adrian a small envelope.

Claire watched as Adrian opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Old.

Faded.

His hands tightened around it.

Claire saw his expression.

And knew immediately.

The photo mattered.

“What is it?”

Adrian did not answer.

“Adrian.”

Slowly, he turned the picture around.

Claire looked.

And felt the air leave her body.

The photograph showed three people.

A younger Victoria Hale.

A younger version of her father.

And…

Her mother.

Alive.

Standing beside them.

Claire’s fingers went cold.

“No…”

She took the photograph.

“No.”

Because there was something written on the back.

A message.

Only four words.

But those four words destroyed everything she believed about her family.

YOUR MOTHER NEVER DIED.

Claire looked up.

Her voice barely came out.

“Adrian…”

He already knew.

Because he had seen the same thing.

And the truth he had spent years hiding was finally standing in front of him.

Claire Bennett’s parents were not victims of an accident.

They had disappeared.

And someone had spent twenty years making sure she never found out.

A phone rang.

Everyone in the hallway froze.

The sound came from the abandoned private suite.

Adrian slowly walked toward it.

Claire followed.

Inside the room, an old black phone sat on the table.

A phone that had not been there before.

Adrian picked it up.

No one spoke.

Then a familiar voice came through the receiver.

Victoria Hale.

“Hello, Adrian.”

His face went pale.

“You found the photograph.”

Claire stepped closer.

Victoria continued.

“Good.”

A pause.

“Now Claire knows enough to ask the right questions.”

Claire grabbed the phone.

“Where is my mother?”

Silence.

Then Victoria laughed softly.

Not cruelly.

Almost sadly.

“You really do have your father’s courage.”

Claire tightened her grip.

“Answer me.”

Victoria’s voice became colder.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Then you need to find the woman who started all of this.”

Claire waited.

“Who?”

Victoria answered:

“Your mother.”

A pause.

“Because she is the reason your parents died.”

The line went dead.

And Claire Bennett realized the biggest secret of her life had just been revealed.

May you like

Her mother was alive.

But she might also be the person responsible for everything she had lost.
