CHAPTER 8 — THE NIGHT THE HOUSE BURNED

Claire Bennett stood frozen in the middle of the library.
The phone remained against her ear.
But Adrian was no longer speaking.
Neither was she.
The silence between them felt heavier than any confession.
Because sometimes the truth did not arrive like an explosion.
Sometimes it arrived like a whisper.
A small sentence.
A single sentence that changed everything.
I was also the reason your parents never came home that night.
Claire closed her eyes.
Trying to force her mind to understand.
Trying to separate the man she knew from the seventeen-year-old boy Adrian had just described.
But every image collided.
Adrian holding her hand at the altar.
Adrian placing the ring on her finger.
Adrian standing beside her family.
Adrian hiding the truth.
Adrian saving her.
Adrian destroying her life.
How could one person be both?
“How?”
Her voice finally came out.
Barely audible.
“How were you there?”
Adrian did not answer immediately.
Claire heard him breathing.
Slow.
Heavy.
Like every word was something he had spent years trying to bury.
“I was seventeen.”
She waited.
“My father had died six months earlier.”
Claire remembered.
Adrian had told her his father’s death changed his family forever.
She never knew why.
“I was angry.”
His voice was quiet.
“Confused.”
“Victoria had disappeared from my life in a way I didn’t understand.”
Claire looked toward the window.
Victoria was still standing there.
Listening.
Watching.
But for the first time…
Claire noticed something.
Victoria was not interrupting.
She was letting Adrian speak.
That frightened Claire more than anything.
Because if Victoria wanted the truth revealed…
Then what was she trying to accomplish?
Adrian continued.
“The night of the fire, I followed my father’s old records.”
Claire frowned.
“Why?”
“Because I found documents.”
“What documents?”
Adrian paused.
“Documents about your family.”
Claire’s fingers tightened around the phone.
“About my parents?”
“Yes.”
“What did they say?”
“That my father and your father had been working together.”
Claire looked at Victoria.
The older woman remained silent.
“I thought your family was involved in my father’s death.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
Adrian’s voice became filled with regret.
“I was seventeen.”
The reminder sounded like an apology.
“I believed everything Victoria told me.”
Claire felt sick.
Because she knew that sentence.
Everyone in the Hale family had lived under Victoria’s version of reality.
“I went to your house.”
Claire swallowed.
“My house?”
“Yes.”
“That night?”
“Yes.”
The room felt colder.
“I went there because I wanted answers.”
Adrian stopped.
Claire waited.
“And what happened?”
A long silence.
Then:
“I saw your father arguing with Victoria.”
Claire looked at the woman standing across from her.
Victoria’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Claire saw it.
A memory.
Pain.
“He was alive?”
Adrian answered softly.
“Yes.”
Claire stepped back.
Her father.
Alive.
On the night she believed he died.
“What were they arguing about?”
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
His voice became tense.
“I was outside.”
“Listening?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“I heard your father say something.”
Claire held her breath.
“He said, ‘If Claire finds out what you did, she will never forgive you.’”
The sentence hit her.
Her name.
Again.
Everything came back to her.
“Then what?”
Adrian continued.
“Victoria saw me.”
Claire looked at her.
“She knew you were there.”
“Yes.”
“And she did what?”
Adrian was silent.
Too silent.
Claire’s heart sank.
“What did she do?”
“She told me to leave.”
“That’s it?”
“No.”
His voice became lower.
“She told me if I stayed, I would lose everything.”
Claire frowned.
“She threatened you.”
“Yes.”
“With what?”
Adrian did not answer.
Victoria spoke.
“She threatened him with the truth.”
Claire looked at her.
“You mean you.”
Victoria ignored her.
Adrian continued.
“I should have left.”
The regret in his voice was obvious.
“But I didn’t.”
Claire waited.
“Why?”
“Because I heard you.”
A pause.
“You?”
“I heard you crying.”
Claire froze.
“I was trapped inside?”
“Yes.”
The image formed in her mind.
A burning house.
Smoke.
A seventeen-year-old Adrian outside.
Her younger self inside.
Alone.
“I ran in.”
Claire looked down.
“You saved me.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you say you were the reason they never came home?”
Adrian was silent.
And Claire knew.
The worst part was coming.
“Adrian.”
His voice broke slightly.
“I found your parents.”
“Alive?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
Claire’s breath stopped.
“They were alive when I entered the house.”
The world tilted.
“Then why?”
“I tried to get them out.”
“Did you?”
Silence.
“Adrian.”
“I got you out first.”
Claire stared.
“Because you were closest.”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
His voice became almost impossible to hear.
“The fire spread.”
“No.”
“I went back.”
“No.”
“I went back twice.”
Claire felt tears forming.
Not from sadness.
From shock.
“And?”
“I couldn’t reach them.”
The library became silent.
Claire looked at Victoria.
The woman was staring at the floor.
Not triumphant.
Not cold.
Broken.
“Who started the fire?”
Adrian did not answer.
Claire already knew.
“Adrian.”
His voice lowered.
“I don’t know.”
The answer shocked her.
“What?”
“I never found out.”
“Then why are you responsible?”
Another long silence.
Then:
“Because I was the one who gave Victoria the documents.”
Claire froze.
“What documents?”
“The documents that proved your parents were investigating her.”
Claire understood.
Adrian had not started the fire.
But he had given Victoria the information.
He had unknowingly exposed them.
He had led her there.
The realization hurt differently.
Not because he was a monster.
Because he was a child manipulated into helping one.
“You were used.”
Adrian whispered:
“Yes.”
Claire looked at Victoria.
“And you knew.”
Victoria did not deny it.
“I knew Adrian would come.”
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“You sent him.”
“No.”
“But you knew he would find my parents.”
“Yes.”
The honesty was terrifying.
Claire stepped toward her.
“You used a seventeen-year-old boy to destroy my family.”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“I used him to protect mine.”
“That is not an excuse.”
“No.”
Victoria looked at Claire.
“It is a fact.”
The coldness of the answer made Claire realize something.
Victoria did not think she was evil.
That was the most dangerous part.
She believed everything she did was necessary.
A sound interrupted them.
Footsteps.
Someone outside the library.
Victoria immediately turned.
Her face changed.
“What?”
Claire noticed.
“What is it?”
Victoria did not answer.
Then the front door downstairs opened.
A man’s voice echoed through the house.
“Mother.”
Everyone froze.
Adrian’s voice came through the phone.
“Claire…”
Fear returned.
“Get away from her.”
Claire looked toward the hallway.
A man slowly appeared at the end of it.
Tall.
Dark coat.
Cold expression.
A face that carried pieces of Adrian.
But without the hesitation.
Without the guilt.
Without the humanity.
Damian Hale.
He looked directly at Claire.
Then smiled.
“Finally.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“Damian.”
He ignored her.
His eyes remained on Claire.
“You know the truth now.”
Claire did not move.
“What do you want?”
Damian smiled.
“The same thing I wanted twenty years ago.”
He walked closer.
“To expose the Hale family.”
A pause.
“And destroy the person who ruined all of us.”
His eyes moved toward Adrian’s photograph on Claire’s phone.
“My brother.”
Claire looked at him.
“You said Adrian killed my mother.”
Damian nodded.
“Yes.”
“But Adrian says he tried to save us.”
Damian smiled.
“And that is why he is dangerous.”
Claire frowned.
“Why?”
“Because Adrian always tells half the truth.”
The words landed.
Because Claire knew.
Adrian had hidden things.
Important things.
Damian stepped closer.
“You think he saved you?”
A pause.
“He did.”
Damian nodded.
“But you don’t know what happened after.”
Claire felt a chill.
“What happened after?”
Damian looked at Victoria.
Then back at Claire.
“The night your parents died…”
His voice lowered.
“Adrian did not leave that house alone.”
Silence.
Claire’s heart stopped.
“What are you saying?”
Damian smiled.
“I’m saying there was another person inside.”
A pause.
“And that person is the reason your mother disappeared.”
Claire stared.
“Who?”
Damian answered:
“The person Adrian has protected his entire life.”
Claire looked at Adrian’s photograph.
Then at Victoria.
Then at Damian.
And for the first time…
She wondered if the biggest secret was not what Adrian had done.
But who he had been protecting.
Damian whispered:
“Ask your husband about Elena Hale.”
Claire froze.
Because she had never heard that name before.
May you like
And Adrian’s silence on the phone told her one thing.
He knew exactly who Elena Hale was.
