CHAPTER 10 — THE TRUTH ADRIAN BURIED

Claire Bennett did not cry.
That surprised even herself.
For years, she had imagined the moment she would discover the truth about her parents.
She had imagined anger.
Pain.
Tears.
A complete collapse.
But standing in the library where her father once worked, listening to Adrian admit the one thing she had feared most, Claire felt something else.
A strange emptiness.
Because grief was easier when you knew who to blame.
But this…
This was complicated.
Adrian Hale had not been the person who lit the match.
He had not been the person who planned the fire.
But he had known Victoria was dangerous.
And he had stayed silent.
Sometimes silence was not innocence.
Sometimes silence was a decision.
Claire looked at him.
“You knew.”
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
“You knew she was capable of hurting them.”
“Yes.”
“And you did nothing.”
The words were quiet.
But they cut deeper than anger.
Adrian swallowed.
“I was seventeen.”
Claire shook her head.
“I know.”
“I was scared.”
“I know.”
“I thought I could control the situation.”
She looked at him.
“And you couldn’t.”
“No.”
The honesty hurt.
Because there was no excuse.
No defense.
Only regret.
Victoria stood near the fireplace.
Watching.
Studying.
Like she was waiting for the moment Claire finally broke.
But Claire did not break.
She became clearer.
“Tell me everything.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Claire…”
“Everything.”
Her voice became stronger.
“No more protecting me.”
A pause.
“No more deciding what I can handle.”
She looked directly into his eyes.
“If you truly love me, then stop lying.”
The words affected him.
Because that was the one thing he could not ignore.
Love.
The thing he had spent years trying to control.
The thing his mother taught him was weakness.
Adrian finally nodded.
“Okay.”
Victoria immediately stepped forward.
“Adrian.”
He looked at his mother.
“No.”
The word surprised everyone.
Even him.
For the first time, Adrian Hale openly defied Victoria.
“You had control over my entire life.”
His voice shook slightly.
“But you do not control this anymore.”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“You think honesty makes you stronger?”
“No.”
Adrian looked at Claire.
“I think hiding made me weak.”
The room went silent.
Claire noticed something.
This was the first time she had seen Adrian choose.
Not react.
Not obey.
Choose.
And maybe that was the person she had been searching for all along.
Not the perfect husband.
Not the powerful Hale heir.
Just Adrian.
The man beneath everything.
He took a breath.
“The night your parents died started months before the fire.”
Claire listened.
“Your father had discovered Victoria was using Hale companies to hide illegal financial operations.”
Victoria’s face remained calm.
But Claire noticed.
A small change.
“She was moving money.”
Adrian continued.
“Manipulating accounts.”
“Destroying records.”
“Using people as shields.”
Claire looked at Victoria.
“And my father found out.”
“Yes.”
“What did he do?”
“He confronted her.”
“And she threatened him.”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked down.
“But your father had something Victoria wanted.”
“What?”
“A copy of every transaction.”
Claire understood.
Proof.
“She needed it destroyed.”
“Yes.”
“And that is why she went to my parents’ house.”
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.”
The room became colder.
Claire looked at Victoria.
“Did you kill them?”
Victoria did not answer immediately.
That was terrifying.
Finally, she said:
“I did not intend for them to die.”
Claire almost laughed.
“People always say that after someone dies.”
Victoria looked at her.
“Your parents made choices.”
“My parents tried to expose you.”
“Yes.”
“And you punished them.”
Victoria’s face hardened.
“I protected my family.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
She stepped closer.
“You protected yourself.”
For the first time, Victoria looked angry.
Not because Claire insulted her.
Because Claire understood her.
Adrian continued.
“I found out about the fire after it started.”
Claire turned.
“You said you were there.”
“I was.”
“Before?”
“No.”
He paused.
“I arrived after.”
Claire looked confused.
“Then how did you know Victoria was involved?”
“Because I found her there.”
Silence.
“She was standing outside the house.”
Claire stared at Victoria.
“You were there.”
Victoria said nothing.
“You watched.”
Still nothing.
Claire’s voice became colder.
“You watched my family burn.”
Victoria finally spoke.
“I was trying to recover the documents.”
The answer was so emotionless that Claire felt sick.
“People were inside.”
“Yes.”
“My parents.”
“Yes.”
“And you searched for papers.”
Victoria looked away.
“They were more dangerous alive.”
The sentence destroyed any remaining illusion Claire had.
Victoria Hale was not a misunderstood woman.
She was someone who believed people were obstacles.
Adrian looked ashamed.
“I saw her.”
Claire looked at him.
“And you let her leave.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The truth was unbearable.
“Why?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of her?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And because I was a coward.”
Claire looked at him.
The word mattered.
Because Adrian finally said it himself.
Not because she forced him.
Not because Damian accused him.
He admitted it.
“I thought I could fix it later.”
He continued.
“I thought I could find proof.”
“I thought I could protect you.”
“But I was seventeen.”
His voice cracked.
“And by the time I understood what happened…”
He looked at Claire.
“It was too late.”
Claire looked away.
The room felt impossible.
Her husband had saved her life.
Her husband had failed her family.
Her husband had spent years trying to undo a mistake he helped create.
There was no simple answer.
No easy forgiveness.
Then Victoria spoke.
“Now you understand why Adrian married you.”
Claire turned.
Victoria continued.
“He needed redemption.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Mother.”
“No.”
Victoria looked at Claire.
“You were never just a wife.”
Claire felt anger rise.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it is true.”
Victoria walked closer.
“You were his chance to correct the past.”
Claire looked at Adrian.
“Did you marry me because you wanted forgiveness?”
The question hurt him.
“No.”
“Then why?”
Adrian looked at her.
And for once…
There was no calculation.
No fear.
No plan.
“Because I loved you before I believed I deserved to.”
Claire looked away.
The answer was dangerous.
Because part of her wanted to believe it.
Then suddenly—
A loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone turned.
Victoria’s face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Adrian immediately moved.
“What was that?”
No answer.
Another crash.
Then a voice echoed through the house.
A woman’s voice.
Weak.
Distressed.
“Claire…”
Claire froze.
Because she knew that voice.
She had heard it only in dreams.
Only in old memories.
Only in the parts of childhood she thought were gone forever.
“My daughter…”
The voice trembled.
“Please…”
Claire stopped breathing.
Victoria whispered:
“No.”
Adrian looked shocked.
“Impossible.”
Claire slowly looked toward the staircase.
Because standing at the top of it…
Was a woman she had buried twenty years ago.
A woman older.
Changed.
Broken.
But alive.
Her mother.
The woman everyone said had died.
The woman who disappeared.
The woman who held the truth.
Claire whispered:
“Mom?”
The woman stared at her.
Tears filled her eyes.
Then she said the words that shattered everything again.
“Claire…”
A pause.
“I’m sorry.”
She looked at Adrian.
Then at Victoria.
“I failed to stop them.”
Claire felt her heart stop.
“Stop who?”
Her mother stepped down one stair.
And whispered:
“The people who were really responsible for your father’s death.”
Silence.
“Because Victoria Hale was not the only monster in this story.”
A pause.
“The worst one is still alive.”
Everyone froze.
Then her mother said the name.
“Charles Bennett.”
Claire’s world collapsed.
Because the monster she had spent her life searching for…
May you like
Was not a Hale.
It was her own father.
